You used Minwax Penetrating Stain over Aqua Coat that fills the grain and seals the pores of wood. Let me ask a question: shouldn't you be using a gel stain instead? Gel stain sits on top of the wood.

Idk. The directions didn't specify what stain to use. The stain I used worked fine and looked like a normal, stained piece of wood. I don't know much about this type of stuff.
