Have you ever opened a bag of chips and thoughts, why is there so much empty space? Did I just pay for mostly air with a side of chips? You are not alone! For years, I've thought I was getting ripped off with each delicious bag of chips. Today, I want to find out if that is true and I am starting with the biggest culprit of them all - Doritos!
Disclaimer: At 11:56, the Breakage Rates for the More Chips Bag and the Average Bag are accidentally swapped; the More Chips Bag Breakage Rate is actually 79.8%, and the Average Bag Breakage Rate is 74.9%.

If they were really worried about chip breakage, they would just put them in a box instead. Cheese Its and Pringles do it right.
ua-cam.com/video/x21ihLFZWDQ/v-deo.html

Cheese it’s also are squares and smaller. Pringle’s are oval shapes. And smooth. Doritos aren’t. Doritos are awkward, bumpy triangles. They would break easier , likely
@@donovandouglas6817 I'm sure they would break easier, but the box would save space, use less packaging, allow for less truck loads per shipment, and be biodegradable. All of which would make them better for the environment, cheaper for the manufacturer, and most likely decrease chip breakage (despite not being as durable as cheese its or pringles)
Plastic pouches are cheaper.
@@donovandouglas6817 Here's an idea, triangle-shaped boxes
Doritos (spicy nacho) is my favorite snack food. The standard grocery store-size bag used to be 14oz. Over time, it went down to 11oz. Now it's down to 9oz. They re-branded the 14oz bag as party-size.
Gotta love shrinkflation.
I thought i was the only one who thought that the party size was like half the size they were a couple years back
I actually found that a local off brand dorito bag is fuller than a doritos bag and is also a bit smaller too. Win win win for me and nature😂
And i dont know how they exactly do it🤔
Their chip is probably tougher than a Dorito. Most of brand foods tend to be bulkier than the brand name ones for whatever reason. Just experienced this with off brand Frosted Flakes basically ripping the roof of my mouth when regular Frosted Flakes have never done that
@@zacwoods the texture is indeed a bit different, however not in the expected way probably.
They are actually slightly more brittle, I've actually never found a fully complete chip in any of the bags i think. They always at least lost a part of their triangle shape or they were broken into ,2 or many pieces😭
But they taste way better and are roughly 1/3 cheaper so idm
Doritos should put this link on their chip bags saying why there’s so much air.

I wonder if Dream sponsored him too, never really got an answer on that on "Theory"
learning that Doritos bags are likely full to the brim upon leaving the factory but arrive almost empty and broken just broke me... Only thing worse than this is USPS delivery times. So Doritos needs an Einstein to develop a chip that is less brittle while exposed to nitrogen gas, and become less brittle per a normal doritos once exposed to oxygen...
And made us really want Doritos.
I like the Kirkland Mission Tortilla strips cuz they actually fill the bag up pretty full and don't have a huge issue with breakage because of the shape of the bag. Frito Lay needs to take a tip from Kirkland.
And they taste better then most tortilla chips.

Tip for getting "less" crumbs in your chip bags. Open the bag from the bottom! I worked in grocery store shipping and even there the chips are always oriented the same way. By opening the opposite end the powder and smaller chips with fall back through the big ones. You eat the crumbs naturally with the bigger chips. Results in less loss if you won't eat chip dust. 11:59 isn't it weird that the fewer chips bag faired roughly the same as the more chips bag with less than 3% difference?
Wouldn't that mean that it wasn't the air protecting the chips, but rather the outer layer of chips are protecting the ones at the center from breaking.
Also I've bought diff. brand tortilla chips in chunked up bags, yes with lots of air, but are also filled to the brim with chips. Most of the chips weren't broken. The Doritos tortillas seem especially fragile for some reason
This is why I always poke the top of chip bags to make sure I’m getting as many chips as possible

I would rather a fuller bag of Dorritos split in halves or even thirds, than half a bag of mixed quality. The chips are pretty big and are practically designed to break with the way they curl
They're not gonna be just split in half tho... You'll be eating crumbs
@@snowflake8658 53 secs ago
also if the chips are intact they are harder to eat in one bite and easier to poke to roof of your mouth with.
@@snowflake8658 Exactly. The most traumatic time for the bag is actually when you put them on the shelf or reposition them there and as a store worker let me say that there is a lot of pressure to put as many bags on the shelf as we can (because they come to us in boxes and we can't store partially filled boxes in the back so they gotta go somewhere) or move all of them around quickly when "facing" the isle. If you grab the top so the bottom puffs up like a balloon, you can really manhandle them without breaking anything.
Why? The size if the bag dosent matter
It’s almost like a multi-billion dollar company spent millions of dollars figuring out the best way to pack, transport and sell their product.
And they did a terrible job at it because the vast majority of their chips break in transit...
You can’t fix what was made broken. In order for less broken chips, they‘d have to change the container, for example a pringles-can.
@@FatheredPuma81 well how do you suggest they package it then?

Hey MattPatt. As a former fritolay employee I can actually shed some ever deeper info for ya. At frito lay they tell the merchandisers to pack out the shelf as much as possible. They pack the bags in cases of doritos in cases of 7 bags. In a cardboard box. And stack them up to 6 ft high when they ship them through the trucks. Where most of the chips getting crushed is in the shelfing process when we had to literally pack them so tightly on the shelf 80% of the time the chips get crushed.

YES
I really like this one cuz it shows how sometimes companies act in ways that don't seem like they benefit the consumer but in reality they do.
Except they could do better and they don't. On purpose. Pringles does it right. Recyclable, minimal plastic. Minimal chip damage.
@@chainedscythe2000 you are right, but at the same time consumers don't want Doritos in a can
@@ArtamisBot honestly a triangle shaped doritoes can would be dope asf
@@trumanbadra8003 super expensive Doritos that come stacked on their side like a package of cookies 🍪
Doritos are known to have a cancerous substance
Working for a chip manufacture you really start to notice these things
Please make a video about what food is the most aerodynamic. (Food being any packaged food you want, Oreos, Pop Tarts etc.)
As someone who used to work at a frito lay factory, I can definitely say a lot of thought and effort goes into getting the bags filled just right, for all the products, not just Doritos. It was actually shocking how complicated the whole process was when I started XD
What was the process

Excuse me, but have you heard of Pringles, and their innovative way of stacking chips/crisps/crackers/puffs/fries on top of eachother? Biscuits with filling already use cardboard for protection, so even thin chips/crisps/crackers/puffs/fries companies could use that to deliver neatly-stacked produce to the customers.
Pringles aren't chips. They're crisps.
Pringles packaging works great for Pringles. Specifically Pringles.. But any chip which is not *perfectly* uniform and stackable would suffer from tube packaging. Any variations in shape, size, or texture would cause the chips to break themselves with even mild jostling.
@@Th3BlackLotus American word for crisps is chips.
@@Th3BlackLotus Sorry I'm too Australian to agree with you.
They're Chips.

Matt, Pat my boy I live in Costa Rica 100% of the chips in the packages are broken 😞
This is so true every time I open a dorito bag it's literally half air I really opened a Dorito baG It was like 10 chips in there
