I've never seen Jordan Peterson so young before...He's one of those people I assumed was always old.
Me too!!!
If you call 55 old.
Ach he's not really old. He's middle aged

As a Buddhist, I want to clarify that in essence, the story Dr. Peterson is saying here is correct. But bear in mind that 'Angels, gods' mentioned here are just his way of representing or how it was represented in the translation he read about Buddhism. Our literature never says gods sent these visions of an old man, funeral etc for Buddha to see. Rather, he was traveling to a park for amusement in 4 different events and on the way saw these on the street. (Saw a funeral, saw a sick person, old person and a monk/hermit) and asked about these from his companion/mate.
Your version is the story that I know.
Depends which type of Buddhism
@@alexbailey3456 These storys comes from the Sutras, the canonical texts. All buddhist schools accept this.
He gets a lot of important things completely wrong. I think that’s really lazy of him. In buddhism the symbolism is very important. He clearly hasn’t deep dived into buddhism

Jordan 'Cash' Peterson. One of my all time favorite teachers, in his prime!
I never heard the buddhas father was told by an angel. It was simply a highly respected spiritual man named sage Asita, and he stated that the son will become a great spiritual leader and teach the world
Sage stated the son will become a greatest spiritual leader Or Greatest King, that's why his father wanted him to become a King
@@devpatel8453 there were a 7 sages who said these 2 option , but sage Kaundinya stated he will definately become spriritual leader not the king and don't even dare you stop him to do so
You have to remember that Peterson has always interpreted everything through a lens of economically and socially political conservatism, with an emphasis on traditional Christian values, and a heavy dose of Jungian mysticism as the glue that ties it all together.
As a result everything Peterson sees and says gets heavily distorted by that political/religious/mystical lens. Distorting the story of the origins of Siddhartha Gautama to replace the ascetic sage Asita with an angel is really typical of how Peterson's ability to reliably understand the world gets distorted by his worldview.
Jordan has never been one to let facts get in the way of his versions of the truth.
Because he wasn't "told by an angel". The story is his advisors, (whom love to make predictions, just like Nebuchadnezzar's did) prophesized it. And it was a great ruler or a great spiritual leader, not a "profane" anything. If you look and what we know of Siddhartha Gautama, (a life about 500 prior to Jesus') the 2 myths and prophecies surrounding them, the 2 comparatively, are VERY similar.

he's way off on a lot of finer points though, biographical and conceptual... 'gods' etc... and the conclusion is shaky too - it's love and compassion that motivate the Buddha to become a teacher, not the idea that you cannot become enlightened while there's someone poor laying in a ditch (because you certainly can)

I felt like this when my kids were young and the news came on
@jarviafoxter8325 Yes, he is a great orator. He was studying literature before he switched to psychology, which lets him extrapolate layers of meaning in religiousness texts. As a Christian I love what he has done with his research on the Bible. I can only imagine how a Buddhist would want to see him do the same thing with their texts. Sadly, he stated he wants to finish doing all the books in the Bible like he did on his biblical series of lectures before he dies, but he is not sure if he will have the time to complete it because it takes him years of thought and research. So I don’t think we’ll see much of his analysis of other religions.

is a great text that pulls the essentials out of Buddha's teaching.
@@eazymethod01 just a minor clarification for the benefit of others: the canon was not just Buddha's words (passed down by oral tradition for hundreds of years), but also commentaries and sub-commentaries
@@BrianKrahmer Correct, much of it is repeated and restated based on the audience of each lesson, so the text I'm referring to is a wonderful collection of the essentials, since the canon is about 5 times larger than the combined old and new testaments.
@@eazymethod01 ah, sorry, i didn't realize you were making a direct book reference. thanks for the clarification

BUDDHISM IS AN OFFSHOOT OF JAINISM. Gautam Siddhartha (Buddha) followed the practices of Digambar Jain monks during his 6 years of searching (see MAJJHIMA NIKAYA). He studied under Uddaka Ramaputta who was a teacher of Jainism mentioned also in the Jain scriptures as well. Buddha’s “Middle Way” was basically a protest against Jain monastic practices. Buddha’s uncle Vappa was a Jain according to Buddhist scriptures. Buddha got a lot of his terminology directly from Jainism, such as Nirvana, Samyak, Arhat, Jina, 5 vows, etc. Buddha was born and raised in an area of India where Jainism was strong (foothills of the Himalayas). The list goes on.
Buddha was from the Shakya clan, which was well known to have been NON-VEDIC. Mahavira was not a Hindu, but was himself a follower of Jainism from the 23rd Tirthankar, Parshva (877-777 BC). Jains do not believe in the Vedas or Hindu Scriptures and never have, and Hindus do not read the Jain scriptures. Jains and Hindus have their own separate shrines and always have. Both are separate and always have been. However, both, along with Jainism’s SHRAMANIC cousin Buddhism, are part of Bharat or Indian civilization. They have influenced each other over time, and have learned from one another, just as civilized people normally do.
Well presented "Jordan Peterson" of the story of Buddha, what made him realize that state. Hope many would take further deep dives about the teachings to take the mercurial path for freedom.

Buddhas life stories used to fascinate me since childhood as probably was the case with many others. These intricacies were not known to me.
Buddha and Jesus still remains two of the most enigmatic historical figures of my life till date.
Then I'd advise you to read about Prophet Muhammad as well. A magnetic, beautiful personality. We believe in Jesus as the precursor to Muhammad and I'd advise you to read, if at all, from authentic sources, from people who existed in or around the time of Muhammad instead of people who wrote about him based on their understanding, centuries later. Jabir bin Abdallah, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Salman al-farsi or Salman the Persian are some of the prime examples of people whose narrations are authentic since they were with him his whole life and Ali ibn Abi Talib was Muhammad's successor. Prophet's descendants like Ja'far us Sadiq or Ja'far ibn Muhammad, Ali ibn Husain and Husain ibn Ali are some examples of authentic narrators on his life as well. Do your research, take your time and if you want, if at all, give it a shot.

I dont know, first time reading this, however they are part of shramanic tradition along with another whigh has died out practice called 'Ajivika'.
I dont know of Jainism but I had learnt that Buddha himself was non committal on existence of GOD. He had expressed his desire of never hearing his followers worship him as GOD, this is the reason I read why the famous Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu has prominent eyes at the top of the temple structure but no ears.
Ajivika sect is said to have been much more renunciating than both Jainism & Buddhism.
Also it is very much possible there were other shramanic branches which has died out with history.
Shramanic tradition in its own way has developed Vaishnavism within Hinduism.
Speaking of Hinduism even though it considers Vedas as sacred is quite unlike Vedic ideas and practices, even the name and number of gods are different and the concept of caste system is too.
So Vedic religion is by name only. Probably Zoroastrianism comes closer to claiming Aryanic religion than Hinduism as we know it today.
However, I find the life of Buddha fascinating, even accepting that he is not GOD. In fact I have come to believe that it is not possible for a person born human to be GOD. However, throughout history there could hardly be a parallel to historical figures of 'The Buddha: & 'The Christ' , that is my belief and that comes from my knowledge of human history and major historical personalities I have known so far.
It however does not mean that I am qualified to comment on Buddhism or Christianity, neither does it mean I have a notion of idolism of these historical figures in my mind.
As I said Human beings cannot be GOD , that is still my belief, unless my idea of GOD and somebody elses idea is different. However, I also believe that any life form , human or others have immeasurable possibilities, and situations can enable or force or both to make a person in living form do extraordinary acts therefore it is foolish to assume that some of us in human species could not have done acts of legends , more precisely acts which we believe is possible only by GODS, and yet it is illogical to say that they in human form were GOD themselves, fir example if we look at the larger picture we might realise that in all practicality they are stil not the acts of the creator.

Brothers and Sisters, Psychedelics have helped me profoundly to not only overcome my 'self' (identity), but to also overcome the vices of humanity. I am aware that there are other ways of achieving this as exemplified by Peterson's telling of the story of buddha (Also, see Eckhart Tolle's story). This is available to all of us and is our default way of being. The natives that lived harmoniously with nature have already given us a glimpse of what an enlightened society can look like. And we can improve upon that still utilizing science/technology (ego) to solve an issue that presents itself to us. Love, forgive, be sincere, be honest -do this with yourself and others and society at large. Let us show the distracted one's that we can overcome ourselves -let us inspire them/eachother. And the section of this JP video that I knew I needed to see (as there is a section in every single one) is the very end where he says "Its tough to be enlightened when there is someone next to you passed out in a ditch." I don't know why. But this is exactly what I have been dealing with here on earth. If I am meant for enlightenment, why does this connection make me stumble with the person in the ditch? Its another saying I remembered JP saying as well : "We are all responsible for each other in more ways than we can ever know" or something along those lines.
"Enlightenment" means nothing and is an empty chase, like all other artificially created objectives. We just crave for stuff to do and that's understandable. Meaning is important to life. But you have to understand that no true/real/ultimate meaning exists. You choose your objective based on what you feel brings you satisfaction and choose a new objective once you have completed the previous one.
In case you would feel satisfied with improving the condition of the weakest / unluckiest, then go for that.

Im Buddhist and hes giving an incorrect account. The Prince was not unable to cope with seeing tragedy. His father wasnt trying to make him 'love life'. His father was trying to hide anything that would activate his spiritual potential. Any suffering would invoke compassion and a quest that would take him away from worldly affairs.
His father was wanting his line to continue. Its the classic example of a father wanting their son to follow them and so bask in glory when their son does their duty of displaying their fathers fruits. But this person was not born to puff up their father. They were born to show their father the real blossoming of the son- not as a sheep but as a king of the inner universe. Not of metals, soil, jewels, harems, soldiers but a king of articulative power and mental development. Buddha is King of Psychology, Peterson has really not explored this at all, very surprising
Peterson’s focus is not on Buddhism, and he gives very little credence to morality outside of Christianity, or at the very least theism. I’m not surprised by this at all.
...maybe you can have worldwide audience of millions, and explain it better? The nuances of Buddhism are secondary to my own personal beliefs, and I appreciate the exposure that JP allows, which allows me to gain an insight into a process that leads to enlightenment. What happens to the angel that visits his father? Does he return for some sort of reckoning?
@@juliusschwencke142 If you're serious about Theravada enlightenment as Gautama had (there are multiple kinds of enlightenment) it can be helpful to gain the wisdom to identify the difference between delusion and concrete reality. The angels in the story are delusion. But even delusion can impart a lesson. The supernatural bits of the story are there to teach lessons.
Blessings to you who walk in the path of universal truth preached by the Buddha..🙏🌹

Wow Dr Peterson was /is a handsome young man !
The last statement is exactly our problem with the internet. We got "enlightened", got this vast amount of information and perspective and it overloaded us. So we act like we don't know who we are and yada yada. I truly feel with the Buddha. Enlightenment is a very different road then just one's self

Remarkable way of telling the story of Buddha, calling the attention for its meaning.
I hope the internet never loses these gems
He speaks and gesticulates EXACTLY like he does today. As if this was yesterday
The Buddha’s insight was the high point of civilisation. It cannot be properly honoured until experienced. A small hint of that can be seen in the Paticcasammupada.
Don’t tell JP that. He has a pretty big hard-on for Christianity.
Yes 💯

Never seen him this young before. He was way ahead of his time even then.
10 mins fluent speaking without a pause. He has a powerful English language system that is sufficient to express the most difficult philosophical ideas. Perhaps the systematic construction, although limited, is more powerful than the free mind unconstrained by the limitation of language, at least sometimes.
you can almost see what he's talking about by looking at his hands
The younger Peterson, such a heart throb!
Where is the rest of this talk? He is doing a nice job so far.
This is one stream of consciousness. Amazing. Love your friends and family.
No it's based on Buddhist knowledge.
Therapist: "Young Jordan Peterson doesn't exist, he can't hurt you"
Young Jourdan Peterson:
old school Peterson...
Young Jordan
I prefer Old Man Jordan
Wow, what a brilliant and insightful guy.
Awesome how he brings the depth psychology aspect to the question of path-centered teaching. There are many approaches to buddhism, quite divergent, but the central thread is the teaching there is a way or path out of our suffering.
Aww this is my go-to mentor Dr Peterson younger than how old I am today. 😊
