139: PNSO Nanotyrannus (Logan 2021) Review

  • Likely to be one of PNSO’s most controversial choices, this is the oft-disputed Nanotyrannus.
    Given its small status, this is an appropriately small figure… I might even say TINY! But even at its small size, there’s no skimping on detail, colouration, and of course that mandatory articulated jaw. It really fits well in terms of quality and aesthetics with the other PNSOs.
    Whether you regard Nanotyrannus as a valid genus or a juvenile T rex, this is a miniature that can be enjoyed equally well, and if you’d like a little miniature to balance out what I’m sure will be an overwhelming show of muscle in your tyrannosaurid display, this might be the one for you!
    Dr Thomas Carr's article Nanotyrannus isn't real really
    tyrannosauroide...

      You can't begin to comprehend how happy I was to have them side by side. When I opened him up, my first thought was "This is tiny and people aren't going to like that!". But in the context of Wilson... the size difference while still having that detail... it's an amazing feeling! I think this is going to polarize many fans, but PNSO made a great decision.

    If Nanotyrannus were to be valid, I would think of it mostly as a scavenger in its ecosystem, going from carrion to carrion to feed on the dead animal.

    • @DinosDragons

      Whether Nanotyrannus was a juvenile T Rex or not, I think the current thinking is that T Rex practised niche partitioning even among its different growth stages. So both Nanotyrannus and juvenile T Rex could very well be scavengers 😁

    pnso used "nanotyrannus" as a nickname for a tyrannosaurs life stage I think, the figure has big eyes and almost the same color as the adults, which lead to think it's a young animal

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      I'm think PNSO played it very well 😁 They cater to people who still believe the Nanotyrannus is valid, but they paint it in such a way that if you want to take is a juvenile you can. Certainly there will be a lot of people who would do just that, such as me as you can see. The family scene is really a nice one I must say! 😁

    aw, the Forrest Gump reference; again, your references (unwittingly or not) include good names for PNSO's dinosaurs! I'd love a dopey-eyed, greenish, chubby Utahraptor or Dakotaraptor that'd run through the nation with the name of Forrest.

    PNSO could've made a new Gorgosaurus, Bistahieversor, Xiongguanlong, or any other tyrannosauroid, but nah, they had to go for the most controversial one of them all. Still, stellar work from them (as usual), and same goes for this review (again, as usual). Plus, the debate continues, its validity may well go either way. That said, I'm skipping this one.

      A lot of people are praising PNSO but it seems to be that they're still pretty hit and miss. The tarbosaurus comes to mind as a pretty botched example.

      @@neo-filthyfrank1347 I actually like the Tarbosaurus, but yeah you're not wrong. The bobble-headed Corythosaurus, horned Torvosaurus, lizardy Microraptor, and Sauropelta with that strange armor arrangement come to mind. Still, even at their worst, they're leagues ahead of most of the competition.

    • @neo-filthyfrank1347

      @@swaggasaurus_rex Why do you like the tarbosaurus? That to me stands out as one of the key examples of a PNSO misstep. The proportions are almost comically ugly with that tiny head and huge body and legs. Looks completely fat and disproportionate. Definitely doesn't seem scientifically accurate, and certainly not aesthetic.
      Anyway another (but far more mild) example is the carnotaurus. Now I actually think it's one of the best carnotaurus' out there but I was a little disappointed in seeing it, especially when compared with how good the company can be. It just seemed to be textured in a rather rough and lumpy sort of way that seemed to wash out the animal's form and elegance. So I'd consider that an instance of it losing out to another company, in this case the collecta carnotaurus.

      Hopefully once the Bloody Mary fossil is analyzed properly, we'll have some further clue. I do know that there are many friends in China who are still not convinced of the invalidation of Nanotyrannus, which _may_ be a reason why it's still named as such. Personally I'm happy to take this as a juvenile T Rex.
      I'm sure they'll eventually get to some other tyrannosauroids. I'm particularly keen on Gorgosaurus and Daspletosaurus myself, as well as some more primitive ones (as long as there is decent material).

    • @swaggasaurus_rex
      @swaggasaurus_rex 3 роки тому

      @@neo-filthyfrank1347 Well I don't have the Tarbosaurus, so I can only go off what I've seen. It may be a bit too bulky as other people have pointed out, and its feet look a little too big, but it doesn't bother me too much. It took me some time to get used to, but now it really doesn't seem too bad. It's really just the proportions of the actual animal itself with the relatively compact torso, miniscule arms and large head that makes it look a little strange, I think. Besides, historically we've been really tight-fisted with soft tissue in reconstructions of dinosaurs, and we'll never really know how fat they could've been (unless we find a mummy). For me, the problem is that it looks disproportionately massive compared to the T.rex which was a much more powerfully built animal. It just makes me wish the T.rex was just a little more bulky. Either way, its PNSO, even if it's not accurate, it still looks so pleasing, and just looks like such a powerful monster. Plus, it's Tarbosaurus (my second favorite dinosaur, after the king), I've been wanting a good one for so long, so the potential problems with it don't bother me as much as other people.
      I do, however, have the Carnotaurus, so I can more confidently speak about that. It does have a fairly rough texture with some rather large scales, but Carnotaurus was a fairly rough skinned animal in life, so it doesn't seem so bad compared to if it was a tyrannosaur or such. My only problem with it is that I wish it had a deeper tailbase, but that doesn't really bother me. I think the Carnotaurus is a really splendid figure otherwise, and it really reminds me of the old Stephen Czerkas model.

    I like the direction this video went.
    I have my own thoughts on the Andrea female rex as far as the way too stressed leg joints(the original black and white skeletal image showed a much more acceptable progression of foot to torso geometry)but, I’ll probably pick up this Nano as well as the Andrea to create a family diorama.
    It is a small figure, but looks very well done.

      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому

      Yes definitely agree with you. I explored that a little in my Andrea review... it's a bit puzzling that PNSO's own original sequential skeletal shows a less extreme angulation of the ankle joint. Having picked her up however, she's one that I highly recommend if you can afford it. She looks amazing and completely at home wherever you decide to place her!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +1

      I believe there could be a few forces at work.
      An obvious one to me is that many people still don't fully agree with the invalidation of Nanotyrannus, and are open to the possibility of its existence. While some may take the stand of non-existent until proven, others can equally take the stand of existent until proven. For example, despite general consensus that Nanotyrannus was a juvenile, can we say definitively it was the juvenile of T rex? It could as easily be the juvenile of another tyrannosaurid.
      While our exposure may be wholly or mostly to ideas in the Western mainstream, it's important to understand that that isn't representative of the entire world.
      Another reason of course has to do with marketing. When you have a fistful of T Rexes already in a saturated market place, it makes sense to differentiate your product from the rest. So you could be _saying_ "Nanotyrannus" but actually _thinking_ "Juvenile T Rex", with a nod, a wink and crossed fingers. That won't stop collectors who want a representative of either.

      @@DinosDragons I got the CollectA Grevy's Zebra recently and his legs were badly warped 😢
      I tried to fix it using the hot water treatment (first time doing it after looking up how to do it). Even making a cast for him out of the cardboard that he came with to keep his legs straight but I noticed that no matter what I do or how long I keep him in the cast the legs keep slowly bending back to the warped position! (though a tad better then how they started) Any tips for how to fix this?

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  2 роки тому +1

      @@horse14t Yikes I just ordered my own Grevy's Zebra too. Sounds like I might have to deal with this too!
      So, generally the hot water method works, but depending on material and how hot your environment is it will likely warp again, due to the material and the small cross sectional area of these slender limbs. For example, my CollectA baby T rex keeps kissing the ground after a couple weeks depite repeated applications of the treatment.
      Some people say there's a different between hot water, then holding it in place while letting it cool on its own. Others suggest that after the hot water, immediately hold it down in cold water might make it harder.
      One final piece of advice. Go on FaceBook and search for a guy called Jurassic Plastic. He has a UA-cam channel but unfortunately no contact info there. He knows a lot about these types of models and if anyone can help, I think he could.
      Good luck!

      @horse14t 2 роки тому

      @@DinosDragons Ah okay.
      I tried both and I think the hot water - cold water method worked a bit better than leaving him to cool on his own.
      I got mine from MiniZoo and when he came the cardboard between the legs was rotated sideways which is what I think pushed his legs outwards so much. I wander if the amount of time the animal spends warped has any factors? 🤔 Like if you left them for a month in a corrected posture would that make a difference?
      He is standing much straighter at least so it wasn't a complete failure. Just wish I could get the legs to stick at the preferred angle... Wish I knew of some toy restorer in my area to see if they could do anything 🙁
      I'll try contacting Jurassic Plastic though! Thanks!

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому +1

      Lol firstworldproblems is right! However, given the very small size and price, that might be one of the factors that help you to decide. The temptation is PNSO just keeps doing too good a job, and at this small size and still maintaining its professional treatment, it really is hard to resist ifv you'd like a baby, or if you have a rule (like many collectors) of "not another T Rex unless something really unusual!".
      I'm not sure if you're looking at existing offerings of ankylosaurs and hadrosaurs or waiting for somethig new. Given the points I raised in my recent PNSO Anklyosaurus review, you might not want to wait too long.

      The longisrostrine appearance is common in juvenile tyrannosaurids, and when the alioramins were found some strongly believed them to be juveniles. In fact many still consider Alioramus as possibly a juvenile Tarbosaurus.

      I wouldn't be surprised if PNSO was actually _saying_ Nanotyrannus but _thinking_ T Rex juvvie. If they had intended fully for it to be Nanotyrannus they could have gone with a different colour scheme. Even as a T rex juvenile it could have been painted differently since we know in extant animals that babies are often coloured differently (particularly if they were feathered or hairy). However that would then not fit into a reasonable colour spectrum from Baby Aaron to adult Wilson.
      I have a private source from China. That said if you order from official PNSO Amazon store now, most Americans should get it about the same time. In fact a friend even got a couple earlier than I did.

    no matter if "nanotyrannus" is it's own genus or juvenile t rex this figure is perfect...the color and shape is too good to assume it as a juvenile t rex next to wilson and if it's nanotyrannus you can assume that it's like different wild cats which sometimes tend to have very similar if not almost the same pattern and colors although i would prefer it it was skinnier like the skeletals...this seems to fit more subadult proportions than juvenile
    by the way where do you order pnso figures from? they seem to arrive pretty quickly compared to aliexpress that i use

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  3 роки тому

      I think PNSO could even have gone with different colours, since many young offspring are coloured differently, _except_ they'd already painted Aaron the baby T Rex one way, so they couldn't realistically deviate too far from that, only to have it believably return to the adult Wilson coloration.
      I have my own sources from China. That said, since PNSO decided on a worldwide release for their models through Amazon, most people should get them the same time. I have experimented with Amazon for a couple models which arrived almost as early as getting from my private source, and an American friend ordering from Amazon US actually got a model earlier than I did.
      Aliexpress I believe is a different cat. I don't think PNSO has any official source and agreement with Aliexpress sellers to release at the same time, so it's _possible_ they actually receive theirs later than Amazon US. I could be wrong of course, but I don't really bother about these things. What's most important to me is that I get first run, non-counterfeit items.
