  • One of the most bragged about setups Christof has ever assembled. The Skitrab Magico with Skitrab Titan bindings, Skitrab skins, and Scarpa LT boots. This is a setup for someone who wants the best lightweight backcountry setup and won't settle for anything else.

    Great set up.
    I have Trab Skimo skis, amazed that they haven’t fallen apart after a couple of seasons. I am an absolute believer in their construction technique. It seems a no brainier that joining the top and bottom wit h a fibre wrap has to be better than relying on a bit of plastic sidewall.

      This will definitely be my setup for anything long-suffering. I'm sure we'll come up with something miserable to do. And yes, we all hit our jackpots when it comes to spouses.

    Hi Christof, stopped by Skimo while i was in town to check out the Magicos, couldn't resist (paired with Plum R170). My first impression was that the obviously climb very well, but couldn't really test them downhill as everything froze on Tuesday. was wondering if you got to use the Magicos properly and what your impressions were?

    If you have boots with the right fittings you can just step in to the Ski Trab bindings. I think La Sportiva boots have it. I think those boots might have the right fittings as well

    • @cnuila
      @cnuila 3 роки тому

      You are correct! Some sportiva boots have the fittings, but unfortunately La Sportiva boots don’t play well with my feet. The F1 LTs have the master step inserts which aid in stepping into regular tech bindings, but isn’t quite the design that you need to step into the ski trabs.

    How have you been liking the Titan bindings this year? Any issues stepping in on steep/exposed runs? Any places you suggest looking for deals on them or do you have to cough up retail price for the best?

  • @markthomasson5077
    @markthomasson5077 Рік тому

    Getting into the binding. Do you reach down and press the lever by hand, or use a ski pole?
    I guess this system gives more control, so you don’t get the binding snapping down into the plastic just to the side of the metal pit.

    Christof, what made you want to switch from your Fischer boots? (not the a big excuse is needed for new gear). It seems like the whole crew had the Fischer boots last year and now have switched to the Scarpas.

    • @cnuila
      @cnuila 3 роки тому +7

      Coming from an alpine racing and ski instruction background, the Fischer Travers was the first "lightweight" boot that let me ski like I want to ski even in the backcountry, meaning putting a ski on edge and driving forward. So in that regard I love it and think it was a huge breakthrough in touring boots. There were plenty of light boots that "could" be skied hard or drive bigger skis, but you ended up having to wiggle like a noodly skimo racer or just make compromises in your technique. The fit was a love/hate for me. I have a wider forefoot with high volume instep and the travers accommodated that well, but I have a narrow heel and I struggled with heel lockdown in the Fischer constantly. Liner mods, shims, low volume footbeds, it just seemed like there wasn't enough "shape" molded into the boot for me and I would get massive heel lift or it would just swim back there. I skied the F1 which is also enough boot to ski well, and the shape is wide up front but narrow in the heel, but it's definitely a step higher on the weight scale. I thought "man, if they could make the F1 in a weight as light or lighter than the Travers, that would be my dream boot." My prayers were answered and the F1 LT is it. The bonus is I think it skis a little better than the Travers too. A little.
      Now, iIf you ski a Travers and it fits great I DO NOT recommend shelling out dough for a F1 LT just to get something new (although as a gear junkie I will not fault you for that either, lol), but if it's time to upgrade, looking for a little more performance/ better fit, etc. then the F1 LT has my highest recommendation. It's the best 1000-1150gm boot I've ever skied.

    • @cnuila
      @cnuila 3 роки тому +6

      We’re in the lightweight ski touring camp but not the Lycra-clad weight weenie camp so our lightest setups like this one are usually 85mm-ish waisted skis in 167-171cm length, our everyday setups are mid- 90 to 100mm waists in 173-178cm, and our “heavy” or “powder” setups are 106-112mm waist and 177-183cm lengths. I’m 5’10.5” and 170 lbs.

    • @cnuila

      After skiing both, I equate the Blacklights to a Mazda Miata: a great performing light sports car. The Magico.2 however, is a Ferrari. More xpensive (because of higher end materials and more complicated construction), and noticeably higher performing. Also crazy light. Why try new things? Because it’s fun!!!

      @@cypriano8763 you’re absolutely right. It was chintzy and was painful with the carbon cuff. I swapped it out for the Palau Tour Lite Pro EVO, which I thought was the perfect match. The liner in the TLT8 Expedition is overkill in my opinion, and places the weight waaay higher than what a light touring boot should be. Also, the weights Dynafit posts on its website are actually WITHOUT footbeds. A little misleading. My boots in a 26.5 weighed closer to 1050 g out of the box and that’s with the minimal stock liner.
