- Many people are confused on what socialization means. It does NOT mean let every person touch your dog or let YOUR dog meet EVERY dog! In this video lesson I address how I socialize a young dog in public. This is a very valuable lesson for anyone with a dog that needs to g et them used to the real world.

Ziggy is a good boi. He frequently checks with his owner while walking.
Seems like a good balanced dog trainer. One thing I do with my dog, who is nervous around traffic, is if I see him getting more and more nervous while we're waiting to cross a busy cross walk or waiting for the bus, is I take him to a little patch of grass or bush and say "go sniff" amd he's completely absorbed in sniffing even with loud trucks. I always give him ample time to sniff when I take him out cuz it's his favorite thing and it gives his brain that little dopamine boost which relieves stress. He's a rescue so loud noises and sudden movements outside scare him.
I take my pit/lab big boy into home depot when I shop there. He is well behaved. While this is a new experience for him, he also gets the opportunity to display his manners, and gently get corrected. I notice he looks to me for guiding him, and he trusts that I will help when make the right decision if he is unsure. This was not always the case as I got him at 2.5 years old from the shelter, and he was a "spaz". When you are calm, consistent and confident, the dog picks up on it and channels those behaviors. At least this has been my experience. AND - big shout out to Robert and his videos! They are excellent and I recommend them to other dog owners.

Hey man, I just wanted to say that on my morning walk we encountered a fenced dog. I saw him first and turned around. Then I was thinking "wtf am i doing? Is my wife going to avoid every dog when she's by herself? Etc.." I turned right back around and we walked by without going nuts. Took a couple corrections but because I watch your content, I told myself to turn around and deal with it. Thanks 🤘😎
He has respect for his owner. During the walk the dog kept looking up at him to make sure he was pleasing his human. What a good boy. His owner must have good energy and follows through when he tells his dog a command.
Amazing video Robert. I have used and recommended your videos and online training to so many people. I have a 5 YO reactive Pitbull that I rescued last year. Your videos helped me guide him into becoming a more confident dog that is now more neutral than reactive while passing dogs in public. I never thought we'd be able to help him until I came across your channel!!

OMG I love this video sooo much! My dog is just over a year and being in public is a challenge, he is very unsure of strangers. Doing this is hard because of the reactivity so I'm needing to do this type of exercise more although it's hard to scale it back enough so he doesn't react and gives me a good level to work up from

Living in the middle of Berlin i found it helpful to introduce my insecure 6 months old male Dutchy together with my female 8 years old Dutchy and taking him each second time alone.
Also i trained them both weekly in public places (on the lead) in basic commands and (unprofessional) tracking. This helped a lot to reduce the stress for both, the dogs and me...
Now since my female left us, my male totally copies all the behavior of my female what is absolutely fascinating to me

@klugschieterin Und funktioniert es gut bisher? Ich hab ein 9 Monate altes Weibchen, gut sozialisiert mit Hunden und Katzen (haben 5 Hunde und 7 Katzen). Hab die Kleine seit sie ca. 6-7 Wochen alt ist (von der Strasse geholt). Lebe allerdings in den Philippinen. Ist aetzend hier Gassi und Sozialisierung zu ueben, keine Gehwege, keine Parks, Leute entweder alle Angst vor Hunden oder penetrant und machen ihr angst. Viel hektik und Verkehr und Laerm ausserhalb der subdivision.
Ich schaue gerade verzweifelt nach Videos die auf sozialisierung von nicht mehr ganz so jungen Hunden eingehen. Meist halt leider idealere Wohnsituationen/Umstaende als ich sie hier habe usw.
Vieles kann ich hier nicht nachstellen. Wie z.B. langsam einen Menschen nach dem anderen naeher bringen. Meine Freunde und Kollegen wohnen alle weit weg und haben kaum Zeit.

I am enjoying watching all your content , I find it very helpful and can relate to your clients in many ways . I have a reactive but smart dog who I don’t know how to manage and I am learning it’s been difficult these past years because I don’t want to give up on her because it’s not her fault . I’ve done on-boarding spend thousands of dollars I didn’t have only to find out this an owner thing .

Thank you for this video! It definitely give me help...I have no socialised Puppy and I was told by some people in canine training don't let him sniff anything, entretain dogs or people. But he became frustrated. But if I give him much freedom, he is blind towards me. So I started to do middle way like in video!👌🏻❤️

Real world in India is quite different...we have to deal with local strays who are all over. It's a very tricky situation. If you are friendly with the local strays, my dog learns to appreciate them. If in a new locality he wants to return the gesture it backfires as new stray dogs will never accept his presence peacefully. With younger dogs it is manageable but with older dogs it can get so stressful as new younger dogs show up in the neighborhood and they are almost always part of extremely territorial packs...

It's hard to belive Robert but over a number of years you are delivering interesting materials and there is always somthing in them that I can learn. After reading many books, watching other trainers, training in the club etc. I had a feeling that I'll hardly learn something more from UA-cam channels. And every now and again you proof me wrong. Your work is invaluable. Never been to USA but if I come to visit, chance to shake your hand and a chat will be top priority!

I noticed this before I watched any video on it with my dog. Too much freedom made him a crackhead 😂 Now I heel him 70% of the walk with 30% smell, pee, walk loose. He is much calmer and I think he enjoys his walks more and doesnt get OCD and has to smell everything
The technique of your camera person is very good... I would like to see exactly how he does this without tripping over something...

Socializing has become more enjoyable. Nervo Vet Syrup seems to improve my pet's interactions with other animals and people.
From what I see, I think the owner has already done a good job with his dog before this training session (if this is the first meeting).
I like it when the owner takes responsibility, get him/herself educated to better communicate with his/her dog, creating a strong bond and foundation. It will be much easier once the dog grows older.

You don't want to start in a crazy environment. You work your way up to it. Everytime you get to a new environment you almost have to start over.

My boarder collie - 18 months)- walks very much like this dog. She always tries to walk just in front of me - not beside me. I do the same correction - stop ask her to come back to heel position - which she does… but then quickly moves ahead again. Then the same procedure. After 7 months, while her reactivity has improved 90% ❤️ I am still having to do the ‘stop’ and ask her to come back to heel position on every walk - two times a day. Very much like the dog in the video.
Suggestions on how we can move forward from this.

Sally, be glad you don't have a German Shepherd! (In my experience over the last 3 years!) I gave up on heel, actually.
Also, Robert, THANK YOU for this specific video (in addition to your others). When I got my fearful terrified 10 month-old GSD (who had been hit with towels and spatulas!) almost 3 years ago I watched videos by another trainer who is excellent too, BUT it caused me to start using a prong (carefully of course) since my Shepherd is a pulling machine on a flat collar.
When I used the prong for walks, as I did, for the first two years (prior to seeing your and Joel Beckman's videos which do NOT use prongs), fortunately I almost never ever needed to make an actual POP correction after the first walk or two (just wearing it made him not pull), EXCEPT that my dog goes NUTS when he sees another dog and just in the act of keeping him from going at the other dog he caused himself to feel tension and tightness from the prong while looking at a dog that he was either scared of (or wants to desperately play with?)... and, sadly, I did give him corrections to try attempt to stop him from going crazy toward the other dog.
Now I know to keep the leash loose ALWAYS and just redirect his attention to us moving forward and out of there.
The three times I tried to make him heel or sit with a tense leash in response to him freaking out about another dog, were the only three times my sweet friendly dog has ever smashed his teeth into my legs while redirecting.
The time I made him sit with HIS BACK TO THE OTHER DOG (like a complete dummy!) he actually bit me on the leg.
I hope he didn't learn to associate prong pain with seeing other dogs like Joel Beckman has seen. I hope I didn't mess him up!
(Sadly I also used a shocker ONE TIME in my yard when he was freaking out at a dog walking by, at the lowest setting he could feel).
My intuition made me stop using that device on my good buddy right quick.
This video and also the one I just watched with the leash reactive black GSD puppy is SO helpful for pointing out how important it is for us to be creating an environment for the dog to have a relaxed experience where he learns that everything is okay and safe, AS OPPOSED TO him being forced to heel (or whatever).
If I don't finally join your site after this video I must be absolutely insane and a glutton for punishment. ;)

At home I have great engagement with my dog. On walks I have ZERO. He is just going ahead, no matter how many stops and reversals I do he doesn't learn to engage. And you'd be amazed how hard he will pull me with a Gentle Leader.

Just found yor videos & learning about prong collars-such great info where do I get the prong collar you talk about using? I have a 2 1/2 yro goldendoodle - walks are tough at times- he like to pull & is distracted by other dogs.

Great video as always! Question, do you prefer longer leashes on walks or shorter? I have a 4 ft leash when going on walks should I switch to a longer one and what are the benefits?
I prefer 4 ft for walking but 6’ for training?

My dog doesn’t smell on a walk. Just has his head on a swivel. Reacts the same way to noises we hear everyday on walks.
Hi Robert, I have followed your guidance ever since i got my Giant Schnauzer as a puppy and he's been great. I have to admit however that I have been lazy and allow him to pull to the end of his leash and smell everything. He's now 3 years old. Is there still time for me to get back to basics and start over with his leash discipline?

Mr Robert, what is your opinion on training the dog to sit every time you stop moving when he’s at a heal? I’ve trained our rotty to sit any time I stop, and before he comes in or out of any door before I give him the go ahead because he’s so big that he would knock my kids over in tight spaces. Like you’ve said in the past, I’ve trained him to not know how big and strong he really is.

Question: What does it mean if the dog touches/licks your hand every now and then while walking next to you? My 9 months old puppy does it too.
Just curious if that means anything.
Oh and may I know what the reason is that he wears a prong collar? I have the issue with my girl that her head is small compared to her neck, so I will need to make the collar super tight to avoid her slipping out when she gets shocked/panic from sudden sounds or idiots approaching her. That could be potentially dangerous due to traffic (here in the Philippines its horrible traffic everywhere). Is that where a prong collar makes sense?
I just try to socialize her (not socialized with humans at all (due to circumstances), only with our other dogs and cats).
my dog just pull on the leash when we are in a place with many people and I don't know where he want to go but he just pulls me and are so stressed 😩 and when people come close he just want to jump on them and when he sees kids he has started to do noise like my dog cries. but all the time when iam outside he likes to pull me to that place with many people so I don't know if he hates it o loves it? please help me I have health issues and this is making me crazy! Here in the UK a paid dog Walker was killed walking 8 dogs, a cockerpoo, 2 dauchounds, 1 collie, 1 Leonburger and breeds not released yet, but police did say that none of the dogs were on the banned breeds list. One of the dogs first bit a passerby going for her dog which she lifted above her head, she had to go to hospital with her injuries. After this attack the 28 year old dog Walker was killed by the dogs, which are family pets from different households. The leads were caught around her, the dogs tangled and some or all of the dogs mauled her death. The police have all the dogs being assessed while investigations go on. It’s such an awful way for the Women to loose her life, for her family, and also for the pet owners who paid a dog Walker and haven’t seen their pets since, they may never see them if pts, which is very possible.
I know this is rare, a dog Walker attacked by dogs, but dog attacks and killings my dogs is increasing loads. After Covid when lots bought pets and not socialised, amongst other issues.
It’s frightening cause your not allowed to carry anything to protect yourself, sprays etc. Can you please make a video explaining what to do if a powerful dog is going to attack you. Or how to get a dog off someone if you witness this, how can you help

How long can an 8 week old puppy walk for? Should you be carrying them everywhere at that point?
8 weeks is the getting to know you phase. This is your house, this is where you potty, this is your food bowl, this is your crate, etc. They are very, very much still a baby. You can play around with sit and down, but way too soon for a leash walk.
Rule of thumb is 5 mins per month of age. So at 8 weeks he can walk about 10 mins at a time.
No public walks at 8 weeks old, they are not fully vaccinated and can pick up disease that other dogs may have spread. Have puppy imprint on you by following you around the house, going out to potty, treat with a portion of their daily kibble. Too young to put on a leash. I watched someone bring their puppy around their neighborhood in a wagon prior to 12 weeks do they could see people , children, meet the neighbors. Thought that was a great idea.
Robert - question. With this dog being fearful, how would you handle it going into fight mode if a dog or person behaved like an ass?
Let’s socialize all protection dog breeds and make them polite and nice. Let’s socialize all solders and make rainbow uniforms. Make love not war and when war comes just make love

@@RobertCabralDogs Idea is destroying the Malinoa breed. Just like already destroyed breeds GSD and Doberman pincher. One should not buy a Malinoa to take it to coffee shops, malls and dog parks. Get completely different breed for social activities. You know exactly what my point is.
I served with dogs and these dogs are anything but socialized.
My dog is not just a pet. His job is to protect my family and my house. I don’t take him to dog parks and malls because he has a job to do. He’s born antisocial from antisocial service dogs. That’s his true nature. He also don’t know how to ride the skateboard or bicycle like an instagram malinoa.
@@3500ton i hate to disagree with you, because I think you're coming form a good place. I think many well bred, well socialized, well trained malinois are capable of protection. Most people are not capable of doing it with their dogs so I would agree on that, but talking with Steve Stoops, the expert, he will tell you the same. Even talking with people like Peter Scherk, his dogs are sport dogs and very very social.
So my dog does pee like 15 times on every walk. Should I put a stop to that? Is that too much freedom?
I honestly think this dog would become more confident with +r instead of a prong and barely any praise or pets. Also, the dog could be more comfortable in their surroundings just by sniffing more. I consider myself a balanced owner. Prongs definitely have their place, but this isn't really what is best for this dog. Seems like the dog would respond better with treats, toys, or more upbeat praise, depending on what the dog values as a reward.

Because ANY Malinois, by THAT age, should be well behaved. They must be, before socializing them in public.
If you have an untrained Malinois (or ANY dog) THAT age, taking them out in public is the worst thing to do.
Personally...I began socializing my last Mal immediately at 8 weeks (with a vest that said "Please don't pet me... I'm in training".
My current Malinois, I got at 6 months, and did the same with, despite her having zero training. But that was only because her demeanor was one that I could; and whoever owned her before had totally destroyed her self confidence.
