There are always personal factors that need to be considered. In a perfect world, you want to get breastfeeding going well, and then add in pumping around 4-5 weeks, but length of maternity leave, demands of your job, etc can really impact this. You don't want to create an oversupply by pumping all the time early on, but you do want to pump if you do need the milk. Most people don't need a big stash to go back to work, just enough for the first day or two, and some extra in case of emergencies.
