  • I needed to remove and sort my engine, so I single handed swapped in a temporary engine, and found that using an exercise band made the job far easier than I could have hoped.

Great Video Ryan. The ups and downs of restoring these Bikes/Projects and congrats on the Bungee lash up, worked a treat.

Motorcycle’s who’s have one heh , been watching this channel for around 16 months and learning through your experiences, love the exercise band idea to help lift the engine , my concern with Flints engine crack is that it’s near to the mounting point so maybe a little tricky but I don’t doubt you’ll overcome that , oh and the head stock for Syd looks brilliant , keep up the good work 👍👍

Thank you. I appreciate that you take the time to give me feedback. I hope the crack wont become more serious, but there is only one way to find out. Cheers.

Take off the rocker cover and check cam chain tension, adjust it by putting the bike in first gear and get someone to pull up on the rear wheel whilst you adjust the tensioner this takes all the slack out of the front run of the chain. You hopefully will see the tensioner take up the slack in the rear run of the chain. While you have the top off also adjust the valve clearances.
On the right hand engine cover there is a slotted round cover. This gives access to the balancer shaft chain adjuster again I would get someone to pull up on the rear wheel whilst you release and tighten the adjusting nut.

Hi Andy, I did check the balancer shaft chain and it was fine, I will double check the cam chain, but I'm pretty sure it was adjusted when I was last in the head. Eitherway, I'll be 100% sure before I go further into the engine. Ryan

I've had really good luck with JB Weld on bike engines Ryan. I think you'll be fine with it. At present I have a broken cooling fin on ny Enfield Bullet held on with JB. Easily stands up to the heat and vibration. That small repair you have to make should be fine.

Thank you. Sorry just seen your comment. Well I've just uploaded the result of the JB Weld, so it should be visible very soon.

another great video Ryan, thank you. don't give up on the scrambler engine, I mean you have resurrected it from the dead which is good going, so I'm sure you can get it back to full health. question - was your son's cinema visit as a reward for the excellent supervision skills? I bet he wants to be a project manager when he grows up

Thanks Tim, I've put in place a plan to get to the bottom of the Scambler engines issues. My Son's cinema visit was a reward for not supervising me for the previous 2 hours.. :)

The JB weld should be ok Ryan ,you prepared it well, maybe the rattle on the other engine is just the camchain ir something simple 👍

Thanks Derek, i am suspecting its maybe related to the balance shaft, but that could be completely wrong. Hope we will all find outsoon.

Hi Ryan. I keep thinking that the breather tube is to short. It should reach the bottom of the engine.

Hi Ed, Thank you. I have a long length of the hose still left over, so I may change that at some point.

Hi Ryan, I'm just about to fire up my 400ne!
It's a stressful thought that it may be a rattling piece of steel and aluminium!
It is always a risk buying a non runner but hopefully, it's something easily fixable.
    All the best David.

Its worth saving Flints top case as its a CCC case which means all the big end bearings on the crank case are the same size, Sid's engine I don't think its anything major as there seems to be no untoward noises like big ends but I do have some thoughts as to what it very well could be

A lovely bit of engineering on the yokes, you must be chuffed to bits.
With that crack in the engine, now I have seen the extent, personally I would get it welded.
The JB weld might hold for a short while but the engine forms part of the frame, it is a stress member and the crack runs adjacent to the frame fixing point.
There is a good chance that using the bike like that will cause the crack to creep even further.
    I hope I am wrong!

dont give up on the scrambler engine yet,, back to basic's the plugs, ignition, timing, carbs if still runs like bag of spanners then strip it,, interesting video, loads people recon JB good stuff never used myself,,

Thanks Si, I'm certainly not about to give up on the scrambler engine without getting to the bottom of the problem. It doesn't really come over well on the video, but it felt like a vibration within the case. so I think it's something physical not just bad running.
