- Young professionals in South Africa often struggle to make ends meet due to the societal pressure to share their income with their families. Edith Kimani speaks with young people in Johannesburg about the pressure on them to share their earnings with their families.

The issue is not parents. Unemoloyed Siblings with many babies are the problem. They expect the uncles to be father figures for their children.
Eish 100%. Its a given that parents will age and thus need some assistance financially and other wise. That is not a problem, the problem is siblings, cousins and their children!
Mean time you don’t even have kids of your own cause guess what? You are not financially ready for them.

I'm 46 and married with children. My children are not my retirement plan. It's Dad's job to take care of himself and Mom. Take care of you for me and I'll take care of me and Mom for you..........But if one of them becomes super successful and wants to facilitate a more relaxed lifestyle for the old man, I'm open to the idea 😂
Some black Americans go thru the same thing... But not on the same scale as our African brothers and sisters.
I'm a 48 year old African American man with two daughters. I have several friends from Africa and the Caribbean. They laughed at me when I first told them about getting "kicked-out". The main thing most/not all our parent/parents do over here is when you turn 18 they kick you out of the house, literally. Again, this happens over here to most of us at 18 BUT not all of us. We never have to give/owe money back to our parents. I've never heard of this type of thing until this very video.
This is happening everywhere to anyone who doesn't have enough money to save because of employment in America

But there are some people who will birth a whole bunch of kids, kids that they know full well that they themselves can't support in every sense of the word not only financially and although they are the ones who birthed those children there's this sense of entitlement and assumption that there's some relative somewhere e.g. A sibling, cousin, aunt, uncle etc. who has more means than me so this relative WILL provide for my children whether it's providing shelter, paying for education, facilitating the acquisition of jobs etc. .... All this responsibility on a relative to look after kids they didn't birth simply because they are related by blood to those children's parent ... In turn this perpetuates dependency

Kaluba Mwenda yours is a basic deductive thinking. The reality is the social support system in africa should be improved. Everybody reaches an underproductive age. Even in Europe, the difference is in Europe the govt. steps in. In Africa they are let to fend for themselves thats why they depend on those who are better off, be it abroad or back home.

As far as I am concerned, parents should not expect any payback from their children. I understand that a child has to assist his family but there must be some limits. Assisting your family should not imply that this assistance is required and expected from you. How can we build generational wealth if we can not invest, if all our salary is spent assisting people ? As a first child, you can assist your parents by contributing towards the fees of your younger ones so that they can eventually become independent too. A whole family can not rely on a single individual for assistance.. Please parents stop expecting too much from your children they have their own families to build. A grateful child will assist his parents as he should but this should not become a burden.
This is one of the many things that’s driving many young people to depression when your whole family depends on you to get them out of poverty because they actually expect you to get a job after completing school and when that doesn’t happen we feel like we have let our families down after sacrificing a lot to put us through school but I think it’s unfair to pressurize young people it’s killing us silently
My dad taught me one thing; black tax is designed and for poor black families. Like he said:" its a parents job to take their kid to school and house them. Their kids don't own them shit, for taking care them"

Respectively, my 2 cents - (my thoughts). Budget what you have and stay firm. Just an example: 10% save, 10% tax, 60% bills, living expenses and 20% invest in your own retirement. It will take a year of trial and error to work out the percentages but if you and your parents work together and trust The Most High it will work. Peace.

Oh my Gosh? Don't do it. My kids are 20 and 17... I live in Europe, and I never expect nothing from my kids. Infact I supplement what they get for the moment, and only because I can afford it. 🙌🏽Let the kids improve their lives in their youth.!!! I never heard of this before we don't do this in America, but I noticed my friends from Africa being stressed ALOT from family members back home calling for money every month
I never knew this was a thing. Are the parents not able to work any longer? Helping parents is an honor but to be forced with a set amount seems so wrong and a very large burden. Can't these parents come together with other parents to support each other? Many questions.
South Africa has the infrastructure to build major manufacturing industries to export finished products to the rest of the continent via the free trade area. Poverty in South Africa should be minimal at best.
Muchie Considering the majority of the wealth in SA is in the hands of Europeans and the Africans haven't been free long enough for the issue to solely fall on their shoulders. The reality is the problem is not corruption the issue is those that became wealthy from a legacy of robbing and murdering indigenous people are taking more from the country than they are putting back into the country SA has a parasite problem not an corruption problem.

They are bought by the elite whites that have all of the wealth, and instead of creating policies that will heavily tax whites for their ill gotten gains, requiring them to invest maybe 10% of their net-worth to set up new business, or putting together a law that says the white owned banks must run programs that educate blacks on how capitalism works, how to build credit and how to run a small business and then giving them capital to set up new black owned businesses. The corrupt black politicians are instead taking bribery / "political donations" from the rich white elites to ensure things remain the way they are. That is corruption - plain and simple.
It's almost like parentifying children. You have to plan financially for your family. It's unfortunate but it happens.
this is a very important conversation that goes beyond cultural appropriation but also incorporates religious and spiritual elements. Above all, it's about 'what you believe' a relationship between you and the money, you and your family and the extent to which you perceive 'responsibility' in relation to 'burden'. Another important conversation should be 'how do we empower' those whom we feel we have to continuously take care of? What are the practical ways to combat this?
I personally feel like it's a vicious cycle that will never be eradicated if black families keep on depending on their employed relatives. The sad reality is that some people are employed but still demand it because "they once helped out", alternatively the cycle will not be erdicated as some relatives are naturally improvident and that takes strain on someone who tries to create independence for themselves.

All those young people in this video seem to be very smart. We need them in leadership positions in order make changes regarding their issues, and the issues of their country. Also, are there ways to help the family become self sufficient, possibly help their family start a small business to generate other income so the burden won’t be on one person taking care of the whole family. And can the family be educated about the economy issues because if that person is no long alive how will the family survive.
Isn't this what Africans and people from other countries have always done? In the past, the people that succeeded were always the ones that shared what they had with everyone else: i.e. their parents and their extended family. This was done in the knowledge that they would do the same for you if it was the other way around? I see this generosity as an integral part of African culture. However, like everything else, the problem is it can be abused by the people who expect you to give them money because you are doing so well.
Its time we all learn to say NO. the sense of entitlement of the black families is too much
The way I see it as a young black South African. On national TV and radio is commercials on Funeral Services and Life Cover Policies, which are ads that fund the broadcaster SABC. Africa's biggest. Because many of us are dying, there is always a good culture and investment in that. Instead, let's focus more on the living, as we honour our ancestors. Learn the formalities which these success "death economies" and do something similar. Such as a pool for social development, by a community. Not only from private or government subsidies, but a black economy. It's a burden on graduates such as myself, but the ability to fund a pool where my family would also benefit. Makes more sense
No black Tax is not just for black people in SA but is widely followed in India as well. Basically its not about race or color but it is a culture which a poor family has to follow
"Black Tax" is the one of the worst ideologies / system created by our parents, though you shouldn't blame their way of thinking & manipulation it's due to their lack of financial literacy and the struggle's they've endured through out the years so its best to just sit down with them & explain to them your budget structure and reasons for where your money is going otherwise you will be sucked + I say immediate family only is the best way. Black tax is simple, save money for your family befor you start making kids, save more to offer your kids, fix them into something meaningful when they grow up ,you will still have more to surport them, even when the are married.

Black Tax is an African / cultural and moral responsibility...We as African, we are family oriented and love and support our family no matter what. We see such an act as a blessing as we being told as a child growing up by our Parents..Speaking As an African from LIBERIA and now living in the United States , i have been subjected to this moral integrity/ responsibility for my family,Friends and Relatives because of my position geographically and Educationally. Reaching this far away from home put me in the position of focus point to my entire family. Expectation of supporting the family is very high and nothing i could say or do to lessen that expectation of my responsibilities and support to the family.Saying no to you parents or family, will make you feel like you are neglecting them because of the moral up bringing. I personally see it as a blessing to me to be able to help even with the little that i may have.
My people are so intelligent and they love so hard, what courage they have to tell their story even in America some parents expect you to do the same thing. My mother expected that of me when I was in the army when I got out 29 days later she kicked me out and I was homeless I had to stay with an alcoholic Auntie of hers now my mother is past I don't think that people that have children should put the burden on them they know their selves it's going to be hard for their children and maybe if those parents can split up a payment a small payment so their child can make more money and possibly come back and help them better. I hope it works out I hope to make it there this year to experience to see my people after my ancestors left their 400 years ago some of those people over there look just like me and I've never been there

I'm an African Navy Black and Proud ! never heard about this so called *Black tax !* helping each other is my culture...but It's not a mandatory ! In fact it's all about values , moral and ethics and beyond. In the whole continent we've the good the bad and the ugly traditions.It's 2020 So Let's all clean our back yard and come clean. People keep generalizine and say in Africa as if we live under one roof ! Africa is a second largest continent with 54 countries and every country has variety of tribes , clans and cultural behaviors with a huge differences !

Let's not have too many kids to take care of and expect them to be our retirement plan. Let's have kids but make our own retirement plans, if our kids want to help out, so be it. Spend more time planning retirement, and not Blackmail our kids later
I don't call it a black tax I think it is a right thing to help your family but in meaningful way in Africa we don't have a social system if we have a social system this things will not be an issue in western Europe the have social system so that no one depends on his family but before they build a social system they too depends on there family members to solve this problem we have to build a social system
I agree with you. It's a very loving African thing to do, if it's done in a pure way. It helps us to feel responsible for each other. Obviously, if it is abused, it wont work.

What color tax is it when the parents were giving money to pay for the education. How is the colonial government entitled to a percentage of those young people salary (taxes) but parents who gave time/money are being criticize?
Thank you, their parents raised them, fed them, hustelf for them to make sure they have a future whereas their goverment left them. All of a sudden once they have money they forget about those who made sacrifices for them
The issue of Black Tax is not about helping out relatives. I don't think anyone objects to helping relatives. However, just like the welfare state in many western countries, sometimes Black Tax becomes a reward to people who are doing nothing to improve their lot and creates a culture of dependency. Ask anyone who is delaying their own marriage and having kids because they are busy looking after their siblings' increasing numbers of children from casual relationships!
I don’t see anything wrong with what they called ✌🏾✌🏾 Black Tax. But if you don’t give what you have back to your family you most give it back to another family that’s the fact. FAMILY OVER EVERYTHING.
Look at the terminology used: paying, tax. Looks to me as if the obligations and responsibilities of young South Africans are the same as the rest of us in the diaspora. You are helping your families because they are living in poverty. You don’t “ owe” them. This is not a “bill”. You love your mothers and fathers as they have demonstrated their love for you.
If you're obliged or even emotionally manipulated to pay for something, it's a tax.
We cannot overcome it. Because you have families who are choosing to get pregnant on your budget. I have like 7 kids from distant families who's parents know I will take care of them and I am only 25 years old. The good thing is my mother spotted the issue of 'black tax' long ago and decided to shelter her family from extented relatives. I contribute towards my siblings and other kids not related to me - anonymous donations - Because I want to and my families tells me if I don't have it or if I can't do it, I let them know. I expect nothing from my kids and I will only have the number of kids I can afford. But I must also admit that when I think of kids and how messy life can get as an adult, I see that I have 3 other siblings, I am supporting 2. If something happened to me, I would like them to take care of my kids.

It's entirely brainwashing. It depends on the standards you were raised in, if your parents aren't doing well it's morally right to help them out. It doesn't necessarily mean you should give them a lot of money and leave yourself with nothing. Maybe open a business that will sustain you and your parents or even open a bus in for them if they have no other means of income. It is more complex than that.
This is not clear to me so let me ask a question, when they say black tax do the mean to say that the government impose taxes and distribute the funds to families? Or is this just a classification by individuals having to help family financially...thats said we only have each other family or other wise but imo help if you have the resources to do so if you don't the don't have an expectation from other to help you when you need it, someone has to take responsibility to help the needy it start with us before government.

I feel more negitive sentiment from this conversation would you sit at dinner with your parents and watch them eat scrapes from the steak you are having for yourself or would your share? Imo if you feel that you are were you are because of the help you got from your parents or relatives feeling obligated is natural but you still have free will, choose to help and help your society otherwise don't ask what your government can do for you ask what you can do for each other. My wife and i are from two different western cultures and we both do what we can but she feel more stressed from her mother pn this topic..

well, this is simple: the European societies are extremely;y individualist.. whereas African societies have always been very inclusive sometime to an extreme.. however, for us, family always comes first.. but also the many frustrations!! I know a father who, because he was the most successful of the family, was burden to pay studies all his kids, obviously.. but also all his nieces and nephews!! and of course they had to go to Europe.. so at some point, he had 10 children living in Europe... so imagine school fees, rent, pocket money...
this is not perculiar to south Africa. you have just given it a name but if you are in the position to help some one also to climb up to the top as some one had done to you why not. in Ghana , some people have to literrally fund thier parents businesses with their university stipends so the profit would be used to support them in continuing education. You are so wrong. we also have social system in South Africa. parents who do this do it to get extra money. Our social system is the best in Africa. There are free houses for the poor, free education, free primary health care, free basic service (water, electricity and waste removal) and monthly social grants. Free education includes primary, secondary and higher education. leaners are offered stationery, transport, meals and school uniform. In Pretoria there is even free internet, and other cities are caching up. Many Africans flog to South Africa because they are attracted by our social system.

I see people saying that we should stop making kids that we can't afford, they are completely misinformed. I just finished my engineering degree and i support my mom and siblings. This is all because my mom was denied an opportunity to study by the apartheid government.
I don't get it, why is it called a black tax on a black continent? We don't call croissants white bread because they come from Europe??

The plus side of being African Black Female (especially) is that an employer will give you a job above someone else regardless of your ability or education.

There nothing wrong with black tax...I remember I got my first job I was adviced to stay afloat help where you can it's your family for Gs sake..the struggle they went through to put you through school...the support...making sure you had something to eat...it's also your job to sit down with your family tell to them where your stand and how much you can give

Black Tax is a good thing because black people need to learn to look after their own race no matter what. We need to make sacrifice to help our parents. Learn to give back to your family. Budget properly and you will be able give back. Not because you are educated means u need to drive a big car have a big apartment and leave your family in poverty in the village. There are blessings attached to giving back to our parents. Children who do not give back are wicked. As a parent who gave my pension to my son he has turned his back on me and at my age I still have to be working.

Children do not owe their parents money ,they owe their future children what their parents gave them . That said ,familes sacrifice alot to send their kids to higher education . Sometimes its a extended family commitment . Giving back should be done with a balance and understanding from both sides. Parents have to understand the budget and financial obligations their children have . One solutuon could be that both parties sit down and plan it out and not just parents demanding everytging !
