The best long jump contest ever, we will never see something like that again. Lewis 4 jumps over 8.80m... Powell 8.95m and a 9m foul... The BEST EVER LONG JUMP CONTEST.
They did some research on the big improvement and found that the runway was way more elastic than it should have been, therefore giving a speed advantage. It wasn't prohibited back then though so it was legal. It wouldn't be today though.
@@zealousideal_code416 the tracks and shoes are still better today though so it doesn't really matter, besides, these were the ones who excelled so spectacularly in the history of track and field this day
I remember this event -- I couldn't watch it because I was at school, I came home that day and my dad had watched it and he told me "Carl Lewis jumped 8.91 -- and didn't win!". I was like, "wtf are you talking about??", lol
He was my long jump coach for a long time. To people who believe he is stuck up because he has a world record, no he is a great man. He cared for me. Now I will be 13 and I have never seen him do his jump. He is my inspiration, forever in my mind and his words of wisdom may rest in my head forever.
I pulled a Mike Powell (his first jump) in a USATF Region 13 Championship in triple jump. I could have been a legit 42' in the competition. Thanks for the video, I have seen this countless times.
Truly an amazing contest. Don't know if there has ever been another contest like this where two giants of the sport were effectively trading world records.
Definitely one of the best vids on youtube! Long jump is a badass event, and if you can jump almost 30 feet you are a damn incredible athlete. Speed and explosion. And technique!
100% agreed. One of the greatest duels in sports history. The video is truly special as well. One of the first UA-cam videos I ever saw, back in early 2007. The low resolution, the early 90s music, everything about it is perfect. It was also a special venue. Tokyo in 1991 seems magic. It was the last year of the Japanese asset price bubble (1986 -1991) It just seems like a different world. I was born in 1994, and East-Asia in the late 80s and early 90s seems so fascinating and special to me. I wish I could have been a spectator that night.
Great competition, Lewis was simply the best ever, more longer jumps than anyone with a almost over 30 ft in Indy. Powell was great too, he just had one great jump.
It is a petty that the music doesn't leaver to hear the voice of the commentator in some parts of the video. And more concretely, when Powell beat the world record.
Powell has now had this world record longer than Beamon held his. Is that incredible or what ? Beamon '68 to '91 , 23 years........Powell '91 to present day , 24 years and counting. Is anyone getting close ? I haven't been following the long jump closely for quite some time.
i bet an NBA player could do it if he trained hard enough. someone like vince carter in his prime, fast as hell and could jump out the gym. maybe nate robinson - fly through the air like a cannon ball. it would be close though. beamon's record exceeded the previous record by two *feet*. about 9 meters is probably the human limit. powell did it on his foul. lewis supposedly did it in the early 80s, also foul.
Wow - this is definitely the most enduring memory of athletics I have from my childhood. I remember the excitement and tesion of this event as it happened. Each jump just got better and better - competition at it's best which makes athletics unbeatable as a sport. Well done Carl and Mike for providing the best duel in atheltics ever!
I remember watching it in 1991. Couldn't believe what I saw, best, most epic long jump competition ever seen. Next year it will be 30y, that world record is already valid way longer than Bob Beamons. Such a battle. I personally never liked Carl Lewis' personality, so I am glad that another guy broke the record from 1968!
this is probably one of the most inspiring videos ive ever seen. just because of the fact that these guys worked as hard as they could, all the blood sweat and tears they put into this, and because they did this solely with their hearts.
It is a great pleasure to watch two outstanding athletes in their top form competing and preforming these remarkable achievements. That was truly an extraordinary evening in long jump history.
Personally, I think that this amazing string of jumps made by Lewis was largely overshadowed by Powell's "one-in-a-lifetime" jump. At 31 years old, you gotta be a superhuman to perform several near world records in a such a short period of time and under such an extreme pressure. The perspective that you have to beat a world record in order to win is all means a tremendous task. Carl Lewis is the best track and field athlete of all time.
Yea, but Mike Powell still has the world record and the longest jump wins. Carl lewis is the greatest athlete ever, Mike powell is the man who jumped longest in history
This guys may be lying, but Mike Powell actually does personal coaching. I have a friend who receives lessons from him, and Powell actually visited our school today and I was lucky enough to meet him. Very nice guy.
Michael Powell's outstanding WR already has held for a long time, sir - 21-and a-half-years, to be precise! I have a great deal of respect for the British long jumper - Mr Greg Rutherford - but the fact remains that when he won the Olympic Long Jump title (in London, 2012) he did not jump anywhere near as far as Mike Powell had jumped (at the World Championships in Tokyo) many years previously. What a remarkable athlete Mr Powell was in his prime!
Yah, this was a wonderful competition between the 2 of them, perhaps the greatest moment ever in the world championships. Remember as a 13 year old taking a day off school to watch this. Dont think my Dad had a clue as to why I was still babbling incoherently and full of energy trying to explain to him what happened when he came home from work. Wonderful.
I ran the 400 and 800 in high school, but I personally loved watching the long jump. Great combination of finesse, speed, and power, all into one event. I wish I could have been here to watch this.
wow you middle schoolers are really good for your age. my best in middle school was 17ft as an 8th grader. i just finished my freshman year in high school with a PB of 19'10''. you improve so much in high school
@2ndAveLine Your analysis is spot on. Incredible competition that was. Who can go past 9 metres? Maybe Usain Bolt when he gets bored with beating everyone in the sprints....
Miss this kind of stuff. Best jump was 7.01m back in high school, my senior year. Made it to states that year, and lost to a guy that jumped 7.73m. That guy was amazing. These guys are real athletes. Respect.
I was a member of "Track and Field Club" in my 8 th grade in Koyo Junior High School. I changed to this club from Basketball Club. I enjoyed a lot with my twin sister Tomomi who changed from Basketball Club also.
he is my hero. the long jump is my event, like its the thing i want to do with my life. seeing him just... float through the air is so awe inspiring. he is THE greatest athlete of his generation.
@RookieN08 Yes. Many jumpers practice jumping with different exercises (especially bounding exercises). I'd say speed and weight training are key- in addition to practicing your approach steps.
Incredible performance by Lewis, best six jump series in history. I just cannot believe that four times in the ROW he jumped 8.83 or better!!! But Powell jumped further (then anyone had ever jumped before), and thats what you need to win.
@Ramwhad - red flags are for when the long jumper oversteps the board on takeoff - like in Powell's first jump on this video. you see the board has clay/plasticine strip at the front of it so they can see if the guy's toe leaves an imprint on it. No restrictions on running speed, it's all about speed + technique hence why Lewis was so good
I remember an interview with Mike Powell in 2014 when he was asked about his world record lasting 23 years. He said "I didn't think it would last 23 minutes. The way Carl was jumping I expected him to beat it in the last round."
The best long jump contest ever, we will never see something like that again.
Lewis 4 jumps over 8.80m... Powell 8.95m and a 9m foul...
The BEST EVER LONG JUMP CONTEST.
Carl's attempts : 8.68 X 8.83w 8.91w 8.87 8.84
Yes, absolutely unbelievable and the best track&field contest ever !

"It's 8,87! Not Enough!" Often you hear that in a long jump competition..
Melvin Sikström I think you will never hear that again...
I remember this event -- I couldn't watch it because I was at school, I came home that day and my dad had watched it and he told me "Carl Lewis jumped 8.91 -- and didn't win!". I was like, "wtf are you talking about??", lol
i watched this live. honestly one of the most dramatic sporting events i've ever seen. i was enraptured.
Exactly. I'm flabbergasted every time I hear that. I think it's even more insane than Tyson Gay's 9.71 second place in 2009.
This song, along with the golden tint and slow-motion, fits the video perfectly
He was my long jump coach for a long time. To people who believe he is stuck up because he has a world record, no he is a great man. He cared for me. Now I will be 13 and I have never seen him do his jump. He is my inspiration, forever in my mind and his words of wisdom may rest in my head forever.
unreal tournament still record not beated like high jump.... since 1991 and 1992 unbelievable!
I remeber watching this live, thanks for posting as so I can re live !!
This is a masterpiece. CHOICE OF SONG IS GENIUS

Thanks for the video, I have seen this countless times.
long jump and high jump records havent be broke
for 25 years
next year 30 years
"8:87 - it's not enough".....you don't hear that in the Long Jump very often.
There have only been two new world long jump records set in 45, yes 45 years, Bob Beamon 1968, and Mike Powell 1991. Amazing!
Now in 53 years!
phenomenal from both athletes. legends.
electric atmosphere. legendary.

Great competition, Lewis was simply the best ever, more longer jumps than anyone with a almost over 30 ft in Indy. Powell was great too, he just had one great jump.

hands down the single best LJ competition EVER. Lewis' series was phenomenal and Powell went beyond 8.9 twice...once marginally illegal.. amazing.
inspirational... Powell jumps like his life depends on it
