Good going men , for getting the steiger 325 going , their a great tractor , and those CAT 3406 A model , as all the other comments , those engines pull and lug down , and sound great , and at night time in the cool air i think you get aprox another 50 hp , they come alive , i spent about 8500 hours on these steiger 325 panthers with the CAT 3406 A model . The B model is a great engine also . Good to see the steiger 325 come back to life , love these tractors .
Such great tractors!!!! Brings back the best memories ever, in the mid to late 80's, I spent just about every late afternoon and evening, and every day off from work, helping on my neighbors big farm, in central New Jersey!!! He had a nice used Cougar, in pristine condition, and used it for all major tillage on his roughly 1000 acres, scattered across 20-30 miles or so, in the very diversified central NJ area. I got to spend many hours, early mornings to well after midnight when I had the chance to chisel plow, or pull a disk and roller harrow with that beast. These tractors are so great, so much better in getting in tight small fields, even better than a large two wheel drive tractor could. Nothing looks better than going down a busy two-lane highway than this machine with the fold up disk and roller harrow behind that, going 20 MPH or so. The biggest issue was always you had to watch when you came up to stop sign or traffic light, as these tractors, at least ours, had lousy brakes, so you had to be real careful about planning to stop!!! We always tried to plan the moving of this rig down the main roads, for an early Sunday morning, as most drivers in that area, were very prone to not paying attention to just how much road these beasts with their trailing equipment, ate up the road lanes!!!
So this is Stiger, I apparently live in Doug Stigers old house. I always wondered why people asked me that question. And I randomly decided to look it up and it turns out he made these unique beasts. But he still is able to drive in his late 90’s and he still comes over on occasion to check up on the trees in the yard.
She sounds pretty good. That old girl would look good with a new set of matching shoes all the way around. But I realize that it would take quite a bit of money to do it. I remember when I could buy bias ply 18.4 x 34”tractor tires in the eighties for 3-400 a piece and that was mounted with new tubes and fluid in them. I think that old Steiger is going to clean up nicely! Blessings!
A little hint on priming crack the filter open just a little, now pump the primer or put air pressure on the fuel tank until fuel starts coming out the top of the filter and tighten it back up. It's primed with no air in the system and it will crank a lot easier.
Damn, that Cat sounds awesome. Reminds me of the Claas Xerion 3000s with their Cat 6 cylinder engines (they come with a large stainless exhuast pipe by default, which is a plus).
You think that tractor is loud now, wait till you work it out in the field. Pure music to the ears. I know where there is a stieger bearcat that hasn't run in years. Its a perfect match for my 440 allis. I think the guy is ready to sell it to me. I dont need it, but I sure want it! There are just fun tractors to drive and easy to work on. Great video 👍👍
Excellent video.Well done for getting the st up and running and out of the bushes and doing some repairs already. She looks in pretty good shape exterior wise, just needs a wash and she will look pretty good.Looking forward to the next one.
Nice job bringing the ole Cat back to life! Sounds like a strong runner. I agree that there's no engine like a mechanical 3406 - And having one in a farm tractor makes them so much cooler. The ST325 is a wish-list tractor of mine, for that exact reason.
some of the fuel pumps U can rebuild 😊😊 and some U can't it depends on which 1 it has / I never did see none of those tractors around here 😮😮 OMG 3 24 2O24
You run that a summer with straight pipes I guarantee your ears will ring inside from then on, we had a 3208 cat in a Massey Ferguson 1805 with straights and windows open, just cackles wide open
Cat is a proven motor. Driven a nd pulled with virtually all. But my go to motor of choice is Cummins. In my steiner or logging truck. Pull it down then give it diesel and away you go.
@thesteigerchannel9956 And they are so simple. Wish i would have bought a few old 379s with 6NZs when i bought the one i have!. Years ago i used to run a Stieger Cougar with a 3306 Cat pulling a Rome breaking disc.
She hasnt givin up on life, were they parked in a pond lol such a BEAST Ya need a bigger cat ... we had a 15 lb tomcat that brought home rats the size of housecats on the farm
Yea I have seen those on the youtube. From what I see most where the Cougar ST 250 or ST 270's with the 3306 Cat swapped for the Scania V8. I think only 2 Panther ST 325's went to Europe area.
@@TheSteigerChannel oh that you know more than me. I just know the steiger is popular work horses. And they do engine swap, but i think there was one dude that swaped out an cat V8. But i note to sure.
👍👍have got a PTA280 cougar 3 Auto with an A model from a 325 panther like you've got there... don't know much on the swap or why they did it when the tractor had 5,000 hrs ..we bought it this way more than 15 year's ago...use it to pull a scraper... works great..also got a series 2 cougar/ 3306 or D333... Rerired that thing... but anyway...👍👍👊
Nice PTA. I always hear people that pull scrapers say they love the PTA's and I can see why. Whoever upgraded the cougar from 280 to 325 had a good eye. I bet that PTA sounds good and pulls hard! . I've only ever seen one series II Steiger. Very interesting!
Pop is RIGHT! A 3406'll hold a low r.p.m. and not heat like the old Macks would. The old Dog 237's operating range was from 12/1300 to 21 with 237 at 12/13 r's and 235 at 2100. The 1st Dog I ever drove has a 6-speed overgear tranny with the lo shift point at 12 to 1300. That was IT! Even splits all the way up and the last one from 35 to 70 m.p.h. No use to try and downshift till 1300. Just had to wait. PULL it! The one in the Pete was a 'B' and it was solid. A C-15 is solid but I'd just as soon have a 'B'. SWEET engine and they can have their Cummins. Not for this old boy. Glad she's going. Waiting on the next!
325 HP 3406? That tune is so mild it ought to last about 4 human lifetimes, 3 if they are health nuts. I've driven a 475 HP 3406 and it wasn't tuned to the nuts, still it was pretty funny with 5 axles in the mountains.
Nice !" sometimes oil overfilled due to coolant from the jacket leaking through cylinder sleeves or rain into the exhaust manifold ? up the guides or rings in a worst case. just wanted to comment so that ppl don't run something like this too long. it the oil gets all milky after 15 mins ya know it's water or coolant.
Yea, after we ran it the oil was at the normal level. Im thinking that all of the oil just drained and sat at the bottom but now when the engine ran the oil went where it was supposed to go. Either that or the previous owner overfill the tractor on purpose because the front main seal leakes oil. Oil was not milky.
Ran at graders &scrapers w/ 3406 & 3408 and 24M w/c18 and dozers W/3408 & 3508’ none of them started as easy as that thing: Everyone was good mosquito control when you started them, used to get 40000 hrs out of them; or more
I can't believe someone would just let a tractor go to pot that way. I would give anything to find one and be able to buy it. No computers or electronics and no emissions crap.
It is similar but not quite. Ford bought the rights to produce the series III PT or PTA model (Not sure which one exactly but it could have been both). To my knowledge they did not produce a ST series Ford model. The ST Steiger is similar to the PT and PTA models but the ST has a wider frame and it is noticeably stubbier looking. It is super identical but not quite the same. 😃
the C model came mechanical or partical electronic i live in southern Ontario i have a friend that has the same tractor yes its loud and it is a pulling beast
Yea I think the ST's wider frame is wonderful. It makes working on it much easier. We can almost stand up fully in the tractor due to more free space, to get around parts in the trans/transfer box area as well as engine bay.
I don't think so. The series III where all ST. the 310's where the Cummins 855 and the 325's where the Cat 3406. Their where also the 270's which had the 3306 Cat. You are confusing it with the series IV. The series IV had KM for Cummins, CM for Cat and SM for Komatsu. Swap out the M for an S for power-shift according to tractor data. I have never seen a series III been called anything other than PT, PTA, and ST. Also its not a Cougar its a Panther.
