The gentleman who painted Leftoverture for the band is a friend of mine back in Astoria Oregon, his name is Dave McMacken, he’s done many covers from Zappa to Angel

Shayne West yes as well as Apostrophe and Motels thing for Zappa, also painted movie stuff like Nice Dreams and 1941, he did so much, he owns a store in Astoria called Ratz now, a wonderful old hippie dude with behind the scene stories of amazement

This series about album covers has been very cool. Even better now about good album covers. Hey Pete, an episode with all the gang ranking your favorite lyrics would be fun. Like the kind of lyrics that really made an impact on all of you. You know, we get into the music because we love the rhythm, the guitars, the vocals, etc. But at some point as we mature, we start really paying attention to the lyrics and some speak to us or impact us in different ways. For example, when I paid attention to the lyrics in Diary of a Mad Man by Ozzy... geez kind of floored me. What do you think?

Yes definitely has my favorite line of album covers ever. Roger Dean is probably my favorite artist in general so it makes complete sense. Love the colors and shapes he uses for his work. But even before Roger Dean came into the picture for Yes, I love their first three album covers (the original covers for the first two, I can’t stand the International versions of those). The Yes Album was my first album from them and I’ve always loved it, even if it is a bit odd. Fragile, of course, is fantastic. Close to the Edge, while very basic, is iconic so I’ll give it that. Yessongs has my favorite Roger Dean art of all time; every “page” of it is fantastic. Tales from Topographic Oceans is a cool cover, kinda spacey but also like it’s underwater. Relayer is absolutely beautiful, which is crazy because it’s pretty much all one color. Going for the One and Tormato I’m not super crazy about because I don’t think Hipgnosis was a good fit for Yes covers. Yesshows has a kind of cool cover; I like the background and the bird thing. Drama is another really brilliant one; awesome use of colors and imagery there. And then they drop off a lot with 90125 and definitely with Big Generator. But Union is good and I don’t mind the cover for Talk. And then the Keys to Ascension covers are a real return to form for Roger Dean, with those crazy, weird, and interesting landscapes that I love so much. Unfortunately, the cover for Open Your Eyes is about as boring and uninspired as the music on the album itself. The Ladder’s got a pretty cool cover with Roger changing up the logo and picking some weird shapes for the landscape. I’m not a fan of Magnification’s cover, but I will say that it’s cool to see purple and black as colors for a Yes Album cover. And I love the covers for Fly From Here and Heaven and Earth. Roger Dean just hit a home run with pretty much every Yes cover he worked on, making this one an easy choice for me.

I said it before that BOC's "Cultösaurus Erectus" will always hold a soft spot in my heart for me since it was the first album I bought at 8 years old. Plus it an amazingly underrated album, 'Black Blade', 'Monsters', 'Deadline', 'The Marshall Plan', and 'Unknown Tongue' are superb tunes.

I just have to say Molly Hatchet had great album covers. Best Metal album covers for a non metal band. When I was a young metalhead and I first saw their debut album cover and the bands name I really wanted to hear them.

I agree. The only bad ones are the first eponymous lp and the truly awful "Fighting" which is actually one of the all time worst covers by any band.

Peter Gabriel solo albums have good covers. I personally don't mind the person being on the cover. It creates a connection with them. I have stared at him while listening to his music and enjoy it. I'd put his face on a t-shirt and wear it proudly.
Iron Maiden and DIO have good covers for the most part.
Yes has the most beautiful artwork. People complain about the simplicity of the Close to the Edge cover, but I find it almost mesmerizing. It just draws you in hue by hue.
If you like the psychedelic look, which I don't, the Jimi Hendrix Experience exemplified that look on Are You Experienced and Axis: Bold As Love.

Good stuff....great topic! My 2 cents is DEFINITELY Iron Maiden....remember being a sophomore in HS and seeing the cover of their debut and I was hooked for life....all of there titles are classic.....especially Somewhere in Time which has so much hidden detail. Maiden is also lends itself perfectly to vinyl 👍👍

Tremendous times/ would not trade in ever. My kids would not get it /today. Lol Great episode with you 2 gentlemen/ as usual ! 👍💯

Hey, Pete! That image in the cover of Kansa's album with the guy made of different sea creatures is actually a painting from a very interesting XVI century Italian painter, called Arcimboldo. He has a lot of paintings like that, with human faces made of fruits, vegetables, animals and stuff. You should check some of his art out - it's great!

The obvious answers for me: Iron Maiden and Fish era Marillion. Pink Floyd, Genesis up to and including Duke. Trying to be more original but that's what I keep coming back to. Early Megadeth as well.

The cover art of Fragile was intended to tell a story about an organic spaceship that was departing a fragmented planet. The story continues with the gatefold art on Yessongs. It may be just me, but I think the story is completed on the cover of Tales from Topographic Oceans, where what I think is supposed to be a wing from that same ship is broken and decaying from behind a rock. My favorite run of cover art.

I love about 75 percent of Yes' album covers, especially Roger Dean's but I love some of the other ones too. I like the early band photos on the US version of Yes' debut and all versions of The Yes Album. I think unfortunately some of Roger Dean's more recent Yes covers are getting too cookie cutter but he's done good recent covers for other artists so he hasn't totally lost his touch imo.

Also, the Yes album TALK was designed by Peter Max, who was very influential during the late 1960's. His style highly influenced the YELLOW SUBMARINE film featuring THE BEATLES. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_(Yes_album)
