My dad's favorite bands were Uriah Heap, Deep Purple, UFO, Pink Floyd & Led Zeppelin! He would play them on guitar and laugh saying my 90's bands were junk! I'm just getting into these bands again thanks to you guys, thanks so much! RIP DAD you will always be alive thanks to this music!✌️

Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash, Yes, Genesis, Renaissance, The Strawbs, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and Queen.
Absolutely Pete. Kiss was everything for me between 1975 and 1979. Before that, it was Sweet ( Sweet FA). Judas Priest, of course: the heroes of the second half of the seventies. Black Sabbath and Deep Purple: first half of the Seventies. Plus: Aerosmith, AC DC, UFO, Scorpions, Rush, Ted Nugent, Starz, Rainbow, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Mahogany Rush, BOC, Moxy, Zep, Queen, Angel
1. The Beatles 2. KISS 3. Queen 4. The Commadores 5. The Rolling Stones 6. The Bay City Rollers 7. Styx 8. Wings 9. Cool and the Gang 10. Ricki Lee Jones/Chuck Mangione This list is a STRETCH! I was 10 in 1980 (9 on Jan 1st) I was and still am a HUGE Beatles fan. I had yet to get into Aerosmith or Zeppelin at the time. KISS was my life from 1977-1980. But at the time my older sister was listening to The Commadores and Cool and the Gang. Queen was HUGE at this time. WIngs,Styx were everywhere in 1980. The Bay City Rollers when I was 5 were MASSIVE when I was 5 or 6.
Definitely the top 4....Styx, Queen, Kiss, Kansas... followed by (no particular order and including honorables) Black Sabbath (not so much the last two Ozzy albums), Steely Dan, Supertramp, Rush, Reo Speedwagon, Bob Seger, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Boston, Journey, and a few others.
Being born in 1974; I would have been still only 5 in Jan 1980! 1.kiss 2.Van Halen 3. Black Sabbath 4. Aerosmith 5. Ac/DC 6. Led Zeppelin 7. Jimi Hendrix 8. Bad company 9. Queen 10. Styx I really only listened to kiss, but I remember my older brother and sister playing these bands! Great episode guys!
Great concept chaps and was just as tricky as last week. In came UFO/Queen/Aerosmith & The Who, out went Journey/Survivor/Scorpions & Rush, with a bit of tweaking with the rankings as well. 1. Kiss 2. Thin Lizzy 3. Deep Purple 4. Led Zeppelin 5. ELO 6. Queen 7. UFO 8. The Who 9. Pink Floyd 10. Aerosmith
I was 16 on January 1st 1980. These were my favorites 10. Boston 9. AC/DC 8. Blue Oyster Cult 7. Led Zeppelin 6. The Kinks 5. The Who 4. Aerosmith 3. Foghat 2. ELO 1. Queen
1 The Replacements 2 Neil Young w or w/o and Crazy Horse 3 The Move 5 Marshall Crenshaw 5 Guided by Voices 6 Love with Arthur Lee 7 The Psychedelic Furs 8 Graham Parker and the Rumor 9 Early Costello records 10 Roxy Music 11 The Smiths Most bloated artists of all time: Bon Jovi Radiohead Coldplay Queen Pink Floyd Guns and Roses KISS Lynyrd Skynyrd Rush
@@oppothumbs1 Really like THE REPLACEMENTS, especially their debut "Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash", but that wasn't even released in 1980 but 1981. THE SMITHS didn't even exist back then, love them, too. Really love BON JOVI's first releases 'til "New Jersey" 1988, never understood the haters.
@@mikevillain666 " Really love BON JOVI's first releases 'til "New Jersey" 1988, never understood the haters. " I guess some people just don't like their music, for whatever reason.
My top ten as a 1979 teenager 1. Kiss 2. Queen 3. Status Quo 4. Uriah Heep 5. Deep Purple 6. Rainbow 7. Scorpions 8. Supertramp 9. Van Halen 10. Alice Cooper
I was 15 and a sophomore in high school (Shawnee HS, Medford NJ) on 1/1/1980. Great topic. In no particular order......Led Zeppelin, KISS, Eagles, Who, Boston, Police, Genesis, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Van Halen. Honorable mentions to Sabbath, Priest, Rush, Queen, Aerosmith, Foreigner.
I was a teenager during the 70s so these are the bands I listened to back then 1: Black Sabbath 2: UFO 3: Led Zeppelin 4: Scorpions 5: Aerosmith 6 : Kiss 7: Judas Priest 8: Ted Nugent 9: Deep Purple 10: AC/DC.
I was only 5 1/2 on January 1, 1980... BUT if looked back at that time today, these would be some of my choices. 10. Deep Purple/.Led Zeppelin ( Both Big influences on hard rock/metal, had to pick both ) 9. Aerosmith 8. Judas Priest 7. ZZ Top 6. Rush 5. Alice Cooper Band/Alice Cooper 4. Black Sabbath 3. Van Halen 2. KISS 1. AC/DC honorable mentions: Triumph The Police Motorhead April Wine The Who Thin Lizzy etc etc etc.
Great topic. In 1980, I was listening to ELO, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, AC/DC, The Blues Brothers, Styx, Journey, The Beatles, The Stones, Kenny Loggins (yes, he was big in 1980!) Floyd, Queen and Supertramp. Probably some others, but when I think of 1980 and my albums & 8-tracks, that’s what I had spread out on my floor.
1. Floyd 2. Genesis 3. Tull 4. The Beatles 5. Sabbath 6. Crimson 7. Camel 8. The Who 9. Rush 10. Yes It was really hard to leave out Nektar, Hawkwind, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, Gentle Giant, and a few others.
Hi Pete, Hi Martin. Another brilliant idea guys. I certainly found this hard My top ten is. 1....Deep Purple 2.....Black Sabbath 3.....Led Zeppelin 4.....Genesis, 5.....Free. 6.....Yes 7.... Hawkwind 8.....Uriah Heep 9..... Jethro Tull 10....King Crimson Honourable mentions. Rolling Stones, The Who, Gentle Giant, PFM, Amon Düül, Caravan. I could go on and on 👍 I was so lucky to be in my early teens in 1970...and bought a lot of the first albums when they were released. I have to say thanks again for your channel Pete...it helps me through my week. Looking forward to your next offering. Peace from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
I was 10 on January 1 1980 so I’m approaching this list from the perspective of being around that age and not my grizzled old self. 1. *Supertramp* I adored the four classic albums from 1974-1979 and love them to this day. Saw them at Earls Court in 1983, my second show. Thought I’d never be so happy again. 2. *Electric Light Orchestra* They were so many kids’ introduction to pop music as their songs were so melodic and memorable. I played ‘A New World Record’ and ‘Out of the Blue’ incessantly and always listened out for their new songs on the radio. 3. *The Beatles* I had a phase where they were constantly playing on my W.H. Smith portable cassette player. My love of melody and strong hooks was thanks to them and I fell in love with them as personalities as well. 4. *ABBA* The first group I fell in love with. Featuring Agnetha, the first woman I fell in love with. The first LP I ever owned was their first ‘Greatest Hits’ and remember staring at the album sleeve while lying on the couch listening to it on my parents’ Hitachi music centre. 5. *Queen* Another group that appeals to young listeners. I loved them around this time and like millions was blown away by the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ video when it aired in December 1975. I thought Freddie Mercury was fabulous and even though I didn’t listen to them so much as I got older, I always retained my love for him as a frontman and larger than life character. 6. *The Boomtown Rats* Unfortunately my affection for this band has not lasted to the present day. But aged 9 and 10 I was obsessed with their albums ‘The Fine Art of Surfacing’ and ‘A Tonic for the Troops’. 7. *10cc* I remember really enjoying their singles in the ‘70s and borrowing my Mum’s copy of ‘Greatest Hits 1972-1978’. A few years later they were my first live rock music experience at Hammersmith Odeon, 17 March 1983. 8. *Wings* I probably became aware of the genius of Paul McCartney first through his post-Fabs group. Songs like ‘Band on the Run’ and ‘Live and Let Die’ became some of my earliest musical loves. 9. *The Jacksons / Michael Jackson* Got strong memories of feeling warm and fuzzy when hearing their songs like ‘Show You the Way to Go’, ‘Blame It on the Boogie’ and Michael’s superb solo debut ‘Off the Wall’. I liked The Jackson 5 too, but I really started appreciating those records when I was older. 10. *The Rolling Stones* The early stages of my love for them began in the late ‘70s. I remember ‘Miss You’ coming out and loving it, and my parents had ‘Aftermath’ so I liked ‘Under My Thumb’. I would have been familiar with ‘Satisfaction’ too, even if I might not have known it was by The Stones.
By the end of '79, I was 26. Many of the 60's bands I loved were gone, or fading fast. That allowed more 70's stuff to creep onto my list. 1. The Beatles (Who else?) 2. The Dictators 3. Blue Oyster Cult 4. Cheap Trick 5. Thin Lizzy 6. The Ramones 7. The Who (Up thru Quadro) 8. The Groundhogs 9. The Jam 10. Edmunds/Lowe/Rockpile
I am 60 y/o now. So I had definite favorites by the end of the 70s. And, indeed, this was a struggle because I have at least ten more that could be on this list. Here are my top 10. 10. Styx 9. Jethro Tull 8. Boston (only two albums in the 70s but, damn, what great albums!) 7. AC⚡️DC 6. Led Zeppelin 5. Van Halen (again, only two 70s albums but, holy shit!!) 4. Queen 3. Kansas 2. Yes 1. Rush! They were my favorite since I first heard 2112 at 14 y/o. I was able to see them live on the Hemispheres tour in 1979 for $6.50! Great show Mr. Pardo! 🤘🏻
Here is where I was at in 1979, I was 13 at the time. Kiss started it all for me so they would definitely be there. Discovered them in 76 with Rock and Roll Over Black Sabbath ... discovered Master of Reality in 78 and had their first 3 by that time. Aerosmith Judas Priest Lynyrd Skynyrd Nazareth Rush Van Halen Scorpions Ted Nugent AC/DC Alice Cooper And Led Zeppelin were the bands I would have listed had I been asked Dec of 1979.
By January 1, 1980, Van Halen only had two albums out, but they still would have to be my #1 for that date. I had already seen them twice by 1/1/80. They were, pardon the pun, ON FIRE. No other band came close to their energy. After that, after considering where my mind was at that time with some consideration for what I think of the bands' later performances: 2. Rush (still very much a hard rock band on 1/1/80) 3. Ted Nugent (near the end of his prime, but what a performer he was!) 4. KISS (in spite of Dynasty and 2/4 of the solo albums) 5. Journey (still a hard rock band on 1/1/80) 6. Queen (still a hard rock band on 1/1/80) 7. Judas Priest 8. UFO 9. Thin Lizzy 10. Rainbow
Stones 'Between the Buttons' LP fr/'67 if you haven't heard it in a while or that much turns out to be a treasure. What a freaking clutch of great protopsych songs beyond the hits "Ruby Tuesday" and "Lets Spend the Night Together" I think its a better album than Let it Bleed which gets brought down by two weak tracks as most of their LP's do- but not that one
Unfortunately i wasnt alive but if i was it would probably be beatles, who, kinks, byrds, beach boys, pink floyd, led zeppelin, captain beefheart, zappa and the mothers, king crimson
Doing this as *artists "and" bands* The time...January 1st, 1980. 1. DAVID BOWIE 2. BLACK SABBATH 3. AC/DC 4. BEATLES 5. KISS 6. LED ZEPPELIN 7. ROLLING STONES 8. PINK FLOYD / THE WHO ... both as impactful 9. STEELY DAN / ZZ TOP ...ditto 10. FRANK ZAPPA Hard to make this list. And there are a good 40 others that come to mind. Love them all too. But doing this quickly....and because I already do this kind of thing with an old friend of mine, I was able to rattle off this essential 10 kind of easily. I so wanted to get Aerosmith, Queen, MKII Deep Purple, Budgie, Kansas, Elton John, Jeff Beck, Cheap Trick, Judas Priest, Blue Oyster Cult, Thin Lizzy, ELO, UFO, James Brown, Kate Bush, The Kinks, Badfinger, Roxy Music and Yes in there, but I didn't want to cheat with anymor "ties" and I'm good with my list. *Bowie, Black Sabbath and AC/DC* are cemented Top 3. While, #4 The Beatles (& #7 Stones) have been omnipresent since I was born (always 'in the ether' and for good reason -- was a huge Rolling Stones fan as a young kid) and man, I'm just as passionate about "70s" KISS now as I was when I got my first Kiss Army Pack in 1976 🔥 In general, I think any in your Top 10 need to be an *artist who really changed and overwhelmed your life* Like, there was me before this artist, then me after. And if you're a musician, how much did they influence and inspire you So there are many many...many others of strong consideration, but hey, I only get 10 here, and that's my Top 10 up there. ROCK ON, Marc ⚡
This was very interesting because my taste has changed so much from: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Who, Genesis, Yes, Deep Purple, Van Morrison, The Beatles. Now, it's jazz but also recent albums from heavier bands. Of the "old" favourites I really only go back to The Beatles, Jethro Tull and Procul Harum. Maybe I just listened to those bands too much because there was less independent and niche labels.
I was two years old by then, but my list of who was around before then would have to be. 1. Judas Priest 2. Black Sabbath 3. Kiss 4. Scorpions 5. Rainbow 6. AC/DC 7. Alice Cooper 8. Deep Purple 9. Aerosmith 10. Blue Oyster Cult
My current top 10 as of 1/1/80 in order of preference : ( with a Pardo mulligan ) The Beatles Jethro Tull The Rolling Stones Yes Genesis Steely Dan Emerson , Lake & Palmer Pink Floyd Deep Purple The Who / tied with Supertramp Honourable Mentions : Queen Elton John Jimi Hendrix Experience Be Bop Deluxe David Bowie Thanks !
This is a fascinating subject for me, because in 1979 I went through the deepest, most cataclysmic and far reaching musical change I've ever gone through. In my life, I've taken huge musical leaps in 1973, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1986-8 and 1991. Those are the years that I encountered, what was for me, a new kind of music, that would lead me to other places and spaces, be it the artist, single or album, that I'm still with. And 1979 was the most significant, the year in which my then musical headspace at the age of 16 was to change for all time. When I think about my musical evolution, there is me prior to '79 and me after '79. And so, if I go to me on Jan 1st, 1980, many of the artists I'd have counted in my top 10 at the time, would not necessarily be there post-Jan 1st. I still love those artists I encountered prior to '80 and I still listen to them to this day {in fact, I was listening to some today and have been doing so for the last 4 or 5 months as I have an iPod packed full of singles from the 1950s to about 2008 and 1970s pop/rock albums}. During that summer of '79, my musical headspace was to alter forever so if you'd asked me which artists I liked at the end of that year, I'd have said, based on what records I was listening to, in no particular order, The Beatles, the Jackson 5, the Seekers, the Osmonds, the Bay City Rollers, the Rolling Stones, the Monkees, Melanie, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Deep Purple. I was also just getting into some Creedence Clearwater Revival, Poco and Jimi Hendrix. As well as that, I was getting into rock'n'roll of the 50s and some of the great pop singles of the 60s as well as some 70s stuff I had munched on for years, so I was taking on something of an appreciation of the Who, Jimmy Ruffin, Cat Stevens, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tommy Roe, the Boxtops, Queen, Hot Choclate, David Cassidy, John Miles, Maxine Nightingale, Stretch and a whole host of others. In many of those cases, I never went further with that particular artist than the single I was listening to, in other cases I did. What was interesting was that year began with my Uncle's girlfriend telling me I couldn't keep listening to just the Beatles {I wasn't. But they were my main listen} so she sent me some soul and 60s singles, while an ex-friend told me the Beatles were shit and passe and that Kate Bush, the Jam and punk was in. And a girl I was sweet on kept going on about the Police. At the time, I was stuck out in Nigeria, so trends tended to be way behind America and the UK where my friends were. As it turned out, I got into all the recommended quite a few years later, but in the summer of '79 I heard Pink Floyd's first 2 albums and that changed my musical headspace. That led me to Deep Purple {the brilliant "Shades of..." and the magnificent "Fireball"} and after that, I was off on a heavy rock journey that still defines 1980 and 81 for me and is one of my favourite life memories to this day. It also led me to jazz, improvisation and other forms of music that I wouldn't have considered on 31st December 1978.
When I first started getting into bands and started buying albums in the early 70's it was CCR, Deep Purple, Grand funk, Led Zep, Alice cooper group, the Who, Elton john. Mid to late 70's it was Bad company, Aerosmith, cheap Trick, Kiss , Kiss and Kiss.
Great show, here's my list; 1) Led Zeppelin (I had seen them live in August '79, so for me, #1 no question) 2) AC/DC 3) Gillan (a brand new album ( Mr Universe) but I played it endlessly during late '79) 4) Motorhead 5)Black Sabbath 6) Deep Purple 7) Rainbow 8) Rush 9) Thin Lizzy 10) Judas Priest. Honourable mentions would be Bad Company, UFO, Sweet & Ted Nugent
My top favorite band if the World ended on 1/1980 would be (in no particular order) ... The Kinks, The Who, Van der Graaf Generator, Pink Floyd, PFM, Goblin, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Crimson and Todd Rundgren (Utopia). Quite a few honorable mentions like Gentle Giant, Supertramp, etc.
@@sdrandazzo yes, I was blown away at the Title song of that album. "City in my head...." I played that damn album incessantly. I was already a Todd fan and this was my first taste of alternative/prog rock. I was instantly hooked.
My list would be a lot different as I didn't like or know certain bands till later and I was only listening to hit radio at the time. 1) Kiss 2) Raspberries 3) Queen 4) ELO 5)Styx 6)Journey 7)Chicago 8)The Who 9)REO Speedwagon 10)Foreigner Honorable Mentions: A few new bands that had amazing debuts: Boston The Knack The Cars And some of the great other bands I was listening to a lot: The Sweet The Doors The Eagles Foghat Beach Boys Yes Grand Funk
I’ve been binge watching you guys since I saw your first video two weeks ago, and aside from watching Pete’s hairstyles change, I must say they back and forth and absolutely top level of music knowledge is astounding from you too. It’s re-ignited my love of music. Thank you!
I was 2 and a half years into the service overseas as of Jan. 1, '80 and most of what I was hearing from my buddies was crust punk and hardcore punk. But I managed to keep my favorites intact going in as I had upon my discharge. Procol Harum Nektar Cream Deep Purple / Black Sabbath (tie) The Sensational Alex Harvey Band Caravan Mountain Fairport Convention / Steeleye Span (tie) Led Zeppelin The Marshall Tucker Band Thanks Pete and Martin for another fabulous show.
@@garyjoyce2160 HI GARY!! I think the hard part is over ! lol -- I'm hoping to go home Monday or Tuesday. Weird how life hands us these special little surprises lol! Hope everything is going ACES for you-- thanks a bunch for asking, it means a lot!
This is difficult again. I want to spread it out among different genres (Southern, Progressive and Hard Rock) so I might have to leave out bands that would be in if I would do a seperate list for each. That being said - here is my list: 10. Outlaws 9. Yes 8. Black Sabbath 7. Genesis 6. Deep Purple 5. Queen 4. Rush 3. Lynyrd Skynyrd 2. Uriah Heep 1. Allman Brothers Band HM: Kansas, Status Quo, Jethro Tull, Atlanta Rhythm Section, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Be-Bop Deluxe, Camel and Beatles
As many of us were during this time before 1980, I was a teenager at the time, turning 20 in 1980 in Dallas. Live albums were a big thing back then as were 8 tracks. This is what I was listening to then, not discovering later: 1. AC/DC - These were the Bon Scott years. Saw every concert when they rolled through Dallas during the 70's. Bon fuckin' Scott was the first God of Rock and Roll for me. 2. Blue Oyster Cult - One of those 'you had to be there' bands during the '70's. First concert ever - wow lasers! On Your Feet Or On Your Knees ruled. 3. Todd Rundgren - including the Utopia albums. A total Freak in the kindest sense. 4. Pink Floyd - Syd Barrett then the 70's monster run starting with Meddle. Also includes Live at Pompeii. 5. Rush - All The Worlds a Stage started it. My best friend then only answered to the name Geddy. 6. Led Zep - Nothing more to say than has already been said by everyone else. 7. Judas Priest - First time to hear them was Sin After Sin then Stained Class. Everything changed. 8. Jimi Hendrix - Only 3 studio albums before he passed in 1970. 9. Gary Numan - Those early Tubeway albums with all those cool songs were late 70's. 10. Frank Zappa - Almost 30 albums by 1980. Didn't like them all but the Joes Garage Trilogy makes me laugh.
My list would start with my prog holy trinity. Genesis Yes ELP Queen Allen Parson's Project Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter The Tubes Be Bop Deluxe Black Sabbath Deep Purple I saw Kiss on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1975, I think it was. I was blown away by their concert appearance, and the music was heavy and good. Their music didn't have any staying power with me after their first 3 or 4 releases though. However, what a concert they put on!
I was hoping to see Kansas mentioned and I wasn't disappointed. Such an amazing output from them, particularly during the 70s. I would have loved to have seen them in concert back then but I wasn't here yet. Glad to say that I did see them here in London on their last tour with Steve Walsh. Although it wasn't the original lineup they had really great cohesiveness and played a killer set, sadly without my favourite song 'The Pinnacle', although they did start the show with an instrumental of 'Mysteries & Mayhem'. Great stuff!
This was a fun experiment. On January 1, 1980 I had just turned 18 a few days earlier, and was a freshman in college. My 10 favorite bands at the time would have been: Kansas Blue Oyster Cult Steely Dan The Doobie Brothers Styx Heart Queen Electric Light Orchestra The Runaways Jethro Tull Two bands that were around at the time and would make my Top 10 now, but that I didn't get into until later in my college years: AC/DC and ZZ Top.
I was 11 and although I owned some records I didn't start buying music with my own money for another couple of months - Madness: My Girl was the first single I bought with my own cash At the time I wouldn't say that I had favourite bands, but I certainly had bands that I liked everything I'd heard: The Beatles The Carpenters Slade Bee Gees Sweet Boney M Abba Blondie The Undertones Buzzcocks
i knew Pete was going to pick Kiss as his first band, I remember Pete saying through many shows how he always says kiss was his first favourite band before he got heavy into Black Sabbath. My list for this would have been 10-Budgie, 9-Yes, 8-Boston, 7-AC/DC, 6-UFO, 5-Rush, 4- Max Webster, 3-Led Zeppelin, 2-Beatles 1-Kiss
At age 13 on 1-1-80: the Beatles, Styx, Kiss, Paul McCartney and Wings. Possibly ELO based on radio listening alone, and maybe I’d discovered Rush by that time too. I dug into things more deeply in high school in the early ‘80s.
1- Pink Floyd 2- Yes 3- Led Zeppelin 4- Zappa/Mothers 5- Bob Dylan 6- David Bowie 7- Black Sabbath 8- Deep Purple 9- Rolling Stones 10- Alice Cooper Honorable mentions : Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Beatles, The Nice, ELP, CCR, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Kinks, The Who, Rare Bird, Blind Faith, King Crimson, Uriah Heep
Pete, Martin, glad to see Queen so high on the Top 10's. Funny thing: "Crazy little thing called love" was released in 1979 (October in Europe, December in US). Would that single have changed your mind about them? Cheers.
Top ten favourite bands of the last 20 or 30 years would be an interesting follow up given the natural focus on older bands 1. David Bowie 2. Black Sabbath 3. King Crimson 4. Judas Priest 5. Yes 6. Pink Floyd 7. Hawkwind 8. Rainbow 9. Uriah Heep 10. Wire
Ok, fav. bands that I was ACTUALLY listening to at the time: Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen, Status Quo, Golden Earring, AC/DC, Rainbow & other ex-Deep Purple bands/ members, Bee Gees, Trapeze, Journey. Cheers.
Well you guys here's my list according to your specs. Going from #1 to #10. 1 led Zeppelin 2, Steely Dan 3 Frank Marino and mahogany Rush, 4Deep purple, 5 Scorpions, . 6 Blue oyster Cult, 7 Robin Trower, 8 Pat Travers, 9 Aerosmith , 10 UFO. Thats what i was listening to before 1980. I look at my list and i love it.😊
1. Emerson Lake & Palmer 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Genesis [bummed not to be able to include Duke] 4. Pink Floyd 5. Yes [bummed about no Drama] 6. Rush [bummed about no Jacob's Ladder/Natural Science & YYZ] 7. Jethro Tull 8. Aerosmith 9. King Crimson [never cared for them after Red] 10. Moody Blues Good show guys, lots of great discussion (as always).
My top 10 are, btw almost similar to last week video but few changes; 1. Aerosmith 2. Van Halen 3. AC/DC 4. Led Zeppelin 5. The Who 6. Allman Brothers Band 7. Blue Oyster Cult 8. Bad Company 9. ZZ Top 10. The Beatles
In no particular order: Gentle Giant, the Beatles, Steely Dan, the Kinks, The Mothers of Invention, the Rolling Stones, Kraftwerk, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple and Kansas.
I was only 9 on January 1, 1980 and my musical favorites were mostly confined to my mom's record collection of Beatles, Stones, Creedence, and Iron Butterfly. So fast forward a little to say, 1984, and think about what if the music world ended 1/1/80, then my list would be: Iron Butterfly Led Zeppelin Aerosmith The Who The Doors Rush Jimi Hendrix Experience Styx Billy Joel Creedence Clearwater Revival
Great show guys. Still don't get why people complain when you don't mention a certain band! Its YOUR opinion and we all have them and I respect everyone's opinions!
Inspired by this episode, I think it would be an interesting show to rate your favorite band (or album) from individual years. For example, in 1965, 1966,...1970, 1971, 1972,...1980, 1981,...etc. Of course, the research involved to list all of the bands or albums relevant to each year would be pretty exhaustive. Just a thought! By the way, I was born in 1964 (or as I like to always respond when asked, "I was born the year the Beatles came to America for the first time", and I can relate to the music and happenings of those times. I love the material and respect both Martin and your vast knowledge and entertaining discussion on all of it. Your shows have inspired me to remember my vast (nearly 200) albums, 8-tracks, cassettes, and CDs I had accumulated during my formative years. I lost the majority of my collection in a flood down in Houston in the early 80s, but I've started a list to remember what I can about that varied discography. Many of the lost albums were inherited from my parents' collection, so it was a nostalgic loss. Thank you guys for inspiring me to start listening to, not just songs, but albums again!
My top 10 off the top of my head in no particular order. Black Sabbath is definitely #1. America, AC/DC, Rush, Judas Priest, Boston, Led Zeppelin, Kiss, UFO, Van Halen
Better late than never...great show/scenario! Being the same age range as our hosts, I'll go with my top 10 listened to during that timeframe: 1. Beatles 2. Led Zep 3. Kiss 4. Lyn Skyn 5. Montrose(loved all 4) 6. Aerosmith 7. Ted Nugent 8. Wings 9. Thin Lizzy 10. UFO
1 Uriah Heep 2 Genesis 3 Pink Floyd 4 Led Zeppelin 5 Supertramp 6 UFO 7 Scorpions 8 Manfred Mann's Earthband 9 Wings 10 Black Sabbath Great fun and I can listen to you and Martin rapping about music all day :)
Floyd, Tull, Genesis and Yes remain from last week. Add in Hawkwind, ELO, Rush, Steve Hillage, Neil Young and Slade. Honourable mention I kept extremely quiet at the time - Glenn Miller. I still love big band swing from the 30s and 40s.
Excellent show and inspiring. I was 15 back then and hadn't heard a lot of bands and had not even heard of prog. So the bands from 1st to last were Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Boomtown Rats, Queen, Sex Pistols, Blondie, Gary Newman, Jean Michelle Jarre, The Buzzcocks.
Hey guys, I love the last 2 shows you've done! Extremely entertaining! So here is my Top 10 with some honorable mentions: 1. Black Sabbath 2. Blue Oyster Cult 3. Kiss 4. Led Zeppelin 5. Pink Floyd 6. Aerosmith 7. Uriah Heep 8. Queen 9. Rolling Stones 10. AC/DC Honorable Mentions (Alphabetical) - Deep Purple - Foghat - Grand Funk Railroad - J. Geils Band - Judas Priest - Lynryrd Skynryd - Rush Again, what a fantastic show this was!!
This episode is perfect for me because I'm older than Pete and Martin by more years than I care to say and the 1970s is the era that I grew up with listening to first AM and then FM radio at home or in my car. I grew up in Southern California and some bands like "The Scorpions" weren't even on my radar, they just weren't popular but "Styx", "Kansas", "Grand Funk", "Lynyrd Skynyrd"et al were as far as American bands. UK bands popular at the time were "Led Zeppelin", "Yes", "Rolling Stones", "Foghat" and even "The Beatles" were still being played on radio or through speakers set up on window sills to allow the neighbors to listen whether they wanted to or not. The music of the 1980s was radically different due mainly to the influence of MTV and what they included in their rotation. As far as "Kiss", I'm pretty much with Pete's parents. I never got them. They were a circus act and a mockery of rock'n roll. My younger brother loved them. I never understood my brother. Still don't.🤔
As teenager i did listen more rock music now as a grown up i listen to classical music or jazz and in general many genres! But when a difficult day at works ends or when i want to feel allright despite all everydays problem i always going to 70s Black Sabbath.Their music is food for the soul
I was 16 so definitely an influential period at that time. At school (in the UK, so we had the sixth form common room with a record player) we always had on The Scorpions, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Queen, Pink Floyd, Rush, Thin Lizzy, UFO, Rainbow, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, but also some classic punk such as The Stranglers, Clash, Damned, Ramones, even The Jam. Obviously the girls couldn't stand what we were playing. For me I jumped over the Led Zeppelin and Genesis material as I went from punk to the harder rock bands like The Scorpions. Got into Zeppelin and Genesis and others after 1980 so can't count them.
The sixth form common room’s hi fi stereo! You take me back to the mid 90s with that comment. I was in sixth form between 1995 and 1997. So what got played was Blur, Oasis, Elastica, Green Day, The Prodigy, Suede, McAlmont/Butler, Mansun, Ocean Colour Scene, Supergrass....and Kula Shaker! Funny how songs that were played from that certain time stick in your head.
Great show as always,... I have an interesting topic to throw out there, How about favorite bands per decade. The basis for the discussion would be what a certain band did in that particular decade.
I really only started getting into music when I was 8-9 years old on 1975-76, so my favorites in those 5 years would have been: Styx, Foreigner, Elton John, The Beatles, and the Doors. The last two because of my older Brother and Sisters. Elton John was everywhere, and Styx and Foreigner albums were the first I had and just listen to them all the time.
Fantastic episode! I know that you probably get a bunch of folks “chewing on your ear” about various topics, so truly no pressure. DIY right? Anyway, I thought an interesting topic may be “Who are your favorite multi-instrumentalists?”. I can think of a few that deserve mention: Paul McCartney on *everything* (ie. plays some fine drums on the Band on the Run album too!), Steve Winwood (great guitar on Medicated Goo), Pete Townshend (not a bad pianist and, of course, ARP synths), Peter Gabriel (brings some meaningful chops on his Yamaha CP80), etc. Forgive me, if you’ve already covered this topic in some form or another.
Very interesting topic. No real surprises here. 10 Rush 9 Yes 8 Gentle Giant 7 Caravan 6 The Damned (on the strength of a handful of albums) 5 The Doors 4 King Crimson 3 Pink Floyd 2 Led Zeppelin 1 XTC (only 3 albums into their discography, with the best part to come) If the world had ended, no English Settlement, Black Sea, Skylarking etc. ....
1. Yes 2. Kansas 3. Eagles 4. Uriah Heep 5. Lynyrd Skynyrd 6. Deep Purple 7. Genesis 8. Emerson Lake & Palmer 9. Saga 10. Gentle Giant I was 15 when the 70'th started, so these were the bands I listen to and still do
Nice to see hear the kind words about Tormato.Yes are my 2nd favorite and I actually like Tormato, more than I like any of the albums before it,with the possible exception of Relayer.
1. KISS 2. Van Halen ( I know it is only 2 albums. But they were from the same area where I grew up. They were us, in a era when everything we liked was from NY or England. Plus Eddie changed the game for guitar.) 3. Queen 4. Aerosmith 5. AC/DC 6. Cheap Trick 7. Black Sabbath 8. Judas Priest 9. Rush 10. Led Zeppelin Honorable mentions: Pink Floyd - (Only really liked Dark, Wish, and the Wall by 1980. Didn't get the psychedelic or instrumental stuff till later.) Ted Nugent - ( Drops off after the first 3 albums.) The Sweet - ( Loved them from early on. Just falls short for new interest in newer bands by 1980.) Devo - ( I know only 2 albums, but a friend called me up and said you are the only one weird enough who will get this. The first album in 1978 blew my mind, as to what a band could sound like.) Styx - ( Loved Grand Illusion through Cornerstone. Can't say I listened to anything from the first 6 albums till after 1980.) The Doors - (Love them still, barely didn't make this list. Had a lot of new interests at the time.) Elton John - ( Loved him from an early age. But his late 70s catalog didn't grab me. He falls short by 1980.) Alice Cooper - ( Probably the first group that wasn't introduced to me by my Dad (50s rock, Motown, Beatles, Stones, the Who, Jimi, CCR). The start of my music. That was for me. But by the end of the decade KISS had taken the stage theatrical thing even further. I also never got to see him live till '86. No videos of the old shows till after 1980. So only pictures in magazines and posters. He took a slight dip around 1980. But remains one of my favorites of all time.) I think I did pretty well recreating my mind on Jan.1, 1980.
Thanks Pete and Martin for this list this was fun to listen to I'm 48 yrs old now so unfortunately was only born in 1973 so music for me didn't enter my world until around 1985 when I was twelve through friends in my neighborhood and also a cousin of mine introducing heavy metal to me and I was hooked in immediately and then started collecting heavy metal albums and cassettes not too long after but I decided to base this on if I was born in say 1960 that would make me thirteen in 1973 and knowing my tastes in music and knowing also what I know today about 1970's hard rock and heavy metal and the bands that I love now from that era what bands would be my favorites if the world ended on Jan.1, 1980 which btw would make twenty years old......so here it is: 1. Kiss 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Deep Purple 4. Queen 5. Black Sabbath 6. Pink Floyd 7. Rush 8. Scorpions 9. Styx 10.(tied) Blue Oyster Cult and UFO Honorable Mentions: Judas Priest Genesis Jethro Tull Aerosmith The Who AC/DC The Beatles The Ramones
My top ten list prior to the 80s: 1.Priest - Unleashed or if studio Stained 2.Sabbath - Sabotage 3.Rush - Farewell to Kings 4.Kiss - Hotter than Hell 5.Queen - Sheer Heart Attack… or Jazz 6.Thin Lizzy - Black Rose 7. Scorpions - Virgin Killer 8. Genesis - Lamb Lies Down 9. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick 10. Yes - Fragile I might be forgetting something, but these albums and bands still kick ass and I am 100% happy with this list. As much as I love thrash and prog death, I could listen to these albums for the rest of my life. 60s - Hell no. 80s would be fine, but 70s is all things considered a magical era for early heavy metal, prog and hard rock.
Cool idea for a topic! Here's 6 that were not on my list from the previous episode: Queen, The Who, The Beatles, Deep Purple , Springsteen, and Van Halen!
Uli Jon Roth’s one ☝️ of my favorite artists; especially the early days from Lonesome Crow Til Love at First Sting 🦂 Although if I never heard Rock You Like A Hurricane; I’d live on, because of the numbers of that latter period? I must say the best songs on the albums after say Blackout @‘ 82, I started playing more Priest and Maiden 💿 s; All things Rush up until Signals I’d be listening to Motörhead; but then quickly shifted into the thrashers; hardcore more so than punk except for PIL and The Misfits; DRI etc and as I discovered real alternative Lp’s not the so called grunge scene that wasn’t even from Seattle! I’m now playing myself with this band called Kilslug and PostMortem, lucky to be signing to New Renaissance records alongside At War and Dark Angel whom were smart jumping to Combat after their debut We Have Arrived @‘ 84! Long story short, We had been had as the company ran off with the cash 💰 In 1993 we were picked up by Relativity records owned by Sony @‘ 93 releasing our first 3 Lp’s as well as our new one ( get ready to laugh 😂) Destined For Failure (( they’d 🦵 us off for not selling 150k Pete! We were missing in action for 4 years and we have put out independently from our temporary hiatus to getting to tour with C.O.C. and Ramones at a CBGB’s gig you may recall; onto Houston street. So we toured with everyone from The Accused to El Duce ( said Courtney Love paid him $50k to kill Kurt lol) Seriously touring Amerikkka and offered a SXSW spot starting in Austin to Oklahoma; New Orleans and returning home from a 5 month tour breaking up on the road, but the early ones are the more doomsday/ thrash Lp’s in our catalogue. Coroner’s Office; The Missing Link ep & as we started getting more experimental a.k.a: BOC meets Black Flag with a little Capt. Beefheart we were losing some of our fans that couldn’t evolve into no longer writing of skulls and graveyards 🪦 The Glory Stompers was the last band I would play for. And I miss it all the time Pete! I’m sure you can relate if you’ve ever picked up a guitar 🎸 Just wondering if you ever had been in a band or just play for yourself right now? I’m 56 yrs older come June 5th 2022 so I hope you’re inclined to let our music do the talking? 👏 Greatest shows are w/ Martin! Love it Til Death 💀 Sincerely yours, DJP Boston Massachusetts USA 🇨🇳 ty!
Well, I was -15 years old in 1980 so I’m going with an alternate scenario where no music was made after 1979.

Black Rose was at #72 on the Billboard album chart when I picked it up. After all of these years, I still track the entire piece. A+

Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Wishbone Ash, Yes, Genesis, Renaissance, The Strawbs, Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, and Queen.

WIngs,Styx were everywhere in 1980. The Bay City Rollers when I was 5 were MASSIVE when I was 5 or 6.

THE SMITHS didn't even exist back then, love them, too. Really love BON JOVI's first releases 'til "New Jersey" 1988, never understood the haters.

I was so lucky to be in my early teens in 1970...and bought a lot of the first albums when they were released.
I have to say thanks again for your channel Pete...it helps me through my week.
Looking forward to your next offering. Peace from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
Can’t wait until you two meet up someday. Definitely record it!
I was 10 on January 1 1980 so I’m approaching this list from the perspective of being around that age and not my grizzled old self.
1. *Supertramp*
I adored the four classic albums from 1974-1979 and love them to this day. Saw them at Earls Court in 1983, my second show. Thought I’d never be so happy again.
2. *Electric Light Orchestra*
They were so many kids’ introduction to pop music as their songs were so melodic and memorable. I played ‘A New World Record’ and ‘Out of the Blue’ incessantly and always listened out for their new songs on the radio.
3. *The Beatles*
I had a phase where they were constantly playing on my W.H. Smith portable cassette player. My love of melody and strong hooks was thanks to them and I fell in love with them as personalities as well.
4. *ABBA*
The first group I fell in love with. Featuring Agnetha, the first woman I fell in love with. The first LP I ever owned was their first ‘Greatest Hits’ and remember staring at the album sleeve while lying on the couch listening to it on my parents’ Hitachi music centre.
5. *Queen*
Another group that appeals to young listeners. I loved them around this time and like millions was blown away by the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ video when it aired in December 1975. I thought Freddie Mercury was fabulous and even though I didn’t listen to them so much as I got older, I always retained my love for him as a frontman and larger than life character.
6. *The Boomtown Rats*
Unfortunately my affection for this band has not lasted to the present day. But aged 9 and 10 I was obsessed with their albums ‘The Fine Art of Surfacing’ and ‘A Tonic for the Troops’.
7. *10cc*
I remember really enjoying their singles in the ‘70s and borrowing my Mum’s copy of ‘Greatest Hits 1972-1978’. A few years later they were my first live rock music experience at Hammersmith Odeon, 17 March 1983.
8. *Wings*
I probably became aware of the genius of Paul McCartney first through his post-Fabs group. Songs like ‘Band on the Run’ and ‘Live and Let Die’ became some of my earliest musical loves.
9. *The Jacksons / Michael Jackson*
Got strong memories of feeling warm and fuzzy when hearing their songs like ‘Show You the Way to Go’, ‘Blame It on the Boogie’ and Michael’s superb solo debut ‘Off the Wall’. I liked The Jackson 5 too, but I really started appreciating those records when I was older.
10. *The Rolling Stones*
The early stages of my love for them began in the late ‘70s.
1. The Beatles (Who else?)
2. The Dictators
3. Blue Oyster Cult
4. Cheap Trick
5. Thin Lizzy
6. The Ramones
7. The Who (Up thru Quadro)
8. The Groundhogs
9. The Jam
10. Edmunds/Lowe/Rockpile
I am 60 y/o now. So I had definite favorites by the end of the 70s. And, indeed, this was a struggle because I have at least ten more that could be on this list.
Here are my top 10.
10. Styx
9. Jethro Tull
8. Boston (only two albums in the 70s but, damn, what great albums!)
7. AC⚡️DC
6. Led Zeppelin
5. Van Halen (again, only two 70s albums but, holy shit!!)
4. Queen
3. Kansas
2. Yes
Discovered them in 76 with Rock and Roll Over
Black Sabbath ... discovered Master of Reality in 78 and had their first 3 by that time.
Aerosmith
Judas Priest
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Nazareth
Rush
Van Halen
Scorpions
Ted Nugent
AC/DC
Alice Cooper
And Led Zeppelin were the bands I would have listed had I been asked Dec of 1979.
By January 1, 1980, Van Halen only had two albums out, but they still would have to be my #1 for that date. I had already seen them twice by 1/1/80. They were, pardon the pun, ON FIRE. No other band came close to their energy.
After that, after considering where my mind was at that time with some consideration for what I think of the bands' later performances:
2. Rush (still very much a hard rock band on 1/1/80)
3. Ted Nugent (near the end of his prime, but what a performer he was!)
4. KISS (in spite of Dynasty and 2/4 of the solo albums)
5. Journey (still a hard rock band on 1/1/80)
6. Queen (still a hard rock band on 1/1/80)
7. Judas Priest
8. UFO
9. Thin Lizzy
Doing this as *artists "and" bands*
The time...January 1st, 1980.
1. DAVID BOWIE
2. BLACK SABBATH
3. AC/DC
4. BEATLES
5. KISS
6. LED ZEPPELIN
7. ROLLING STONES
8. PINK FLOYD / THE WHO ... both as impactful
9. STEELY DAN / ZZ TOP ...ditto
10. FRANK ZAPPA
Hard to make this list.
While, #4 The Beatles (& #7 Stones) have been omnipresent since I was born (always 'in the ether' and for good reason -- was a huge Rolling Stones fan as a young kid) and man, I'm just as passionate about "70s" KISS now as I was when I got my first Kiss Army Pack in 1976 🔥
In general, I think any in your Top 10 need to be an *artist who really changed and overwhelmed your life* Like, there was me before this artist, then me after. And if you're a musician, how much did they influence and inspire you
So there are many many...many others of strong consideration, but hey, I only get 10 here, and that's my Top 10 up there.
ROCK ON,
Marc

This was very interesting because my taste has changed so much from: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Who, Genesis, Yes, Deep Purple, Van Morrison, The Beatles. Now, it's jazz but also recent albums from heavier bands. Of the "old" favourites I really only go back to The Beatles, Jethro Tull and Procul Harum. Maybe I just listened to those bands too much because there was less independent and niche labels.
I was two years old by then, but my list of who was around before then would have to be.
1. Judas Priest
2. Black Sabbath
3. Kiss
4. Scorpions
5. Rainbow
6. AC/DC
7. Alice Cooper
8. Deep Purple
9. Aerosmith
10. Blue Oyster Cult
Judging by that list, if I was alive back then we'd be friends. That list is nearly the same as mine.
Great list!! I might swap out BOC for LED Zeppelin… but awesome list all around! JP at the top!! 🤘
Much thanks for the creation of this podcast Martin Peter 👍
My current top 10 as of 1/1/80 in order of preference : ( with a Pardo mulligan )
The Beatles
Jethro Tull
The Rolling Stones
Yes
Genesis
Steely Dan
Emerson , Lake & Palmer
Pink Floyd
Deep Purple
The Who / tied with Supertramp
Honourable Mentions :
Queen
Elton John
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Be Bop Deluxe
David Bowie

One of my all time favorites that never seems to get a mention on any episodes
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
If anyone has earned the right to ‘pull a Pardo’, it’s Pete! Fun episode, fellas!
Great show, here's my list;
1) Led Zeppelin (I had seen them live in August '79, so for me, #1 no question)
2) AC/DC
3) Gillan (a brand new album ( Mr Universe) but I played it endlessly during late '79)
4) Motorhead
5)Black Sabbath
6) Deep Purple
7) Rainbow
8) Rush
9) Thin Lizzy
10) Judas Priest.
Utopia's "The IKON" is so good.
@@mikeloomis687 absolutely. Rundgren and Utopia are imho under rated for their memorable prog and more poppy songs of their time.
1) Kiss
2) Raspberries
3) Queen
4) ELO
5)Styx
6)Journey
7)Chicago
8)The Who
9)REO Speedwagon
10)Foreigner

A few new bands that had amazing debuts:
Boston
The Knack
The Cars
And some of the great other bands I was listening to a lot:
The Sweet
The Doors
The Eagles
Foghat
Beach Boys
Yes
Grand Funk
Best 10 albums you bought in the cut-out bins... You know you need to do that one :)
Procol Harum
Nektar
Cream
Deep Purple / Black Sabbath (tie)
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
Caravan
Mountain
Fairport Convention / Steeleye Span (tie)
Led Zeppelin

Great list.
This is difficult again. I want to spread it out among different genres (Southern, Progressive and Hard Rock) so I might have to leave out bands that would be in if I would do a seperate list for each. That being said - here is my list:
10. Outlaws
9. Yes
8. Black Sabbath
7. Genesis
6. Deep Purple
5. Queen
4. Rush
3. Lynyrd Skynyrd
2. Uriah Heep
1. Allman Brothers Band
HM: Kansas, Status Quo, Jethro Tull, Atlanta Rhythm Section, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Be-Bop Deluxe, Camel and Beatles
My Favorite Bands pre-1980:
1.) Rush
2.) Jethro Tull
3.) Gentle Giant
4.) Thin Lizzy
5.) Black Sabbath
6.) Blue Oyster Cult
7.) Budgie
8.) Dixie Dregs
9.) Aerosmith
10.) Pink Floyd
HMs: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Deep Purple, Genesis, Judas Priest, and UFO
As many of us were during this time before 1980, I was a teenager at the time, turning 20 in 1980 in Dallas. Live albums were a big thing back then as were 8 tracks. This is what I was listening to then, not discovering later:
Genesis
Yes
ELP
Queen
Allen Parson's Project
Mott the Hoople/Ian Hunter
The Tubes
Be Bop Deluxe
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
I saw Kiss on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1975, I think it was.
My 10 favorite bands at the time would have been:
Kansas
Blue Oyster Cult
Steely Dan
The Doobie Brothers
Styx
Heart
Queen
Electric Light Orchestra
The Runaways
Jethro Tull
Two bands that were around at the time and would make my Top 10 now, but that I didn't get into until later in my college years: AC/DC and ZZ Top.
I was 11 and although I owned some records I didn't start buying music with my own money for another couple of months - Madness: My Girl was the first single I bought with my own cash
At the time I wouldn't say that I had favourite bands, but I certainly had bands that I liked everything I'd heard:
The Beatles
The Carpenters
Slade
Bee Gees
Sweet
Boney M
Abba
Blondie
The Undertones
Buzzcocks
i knew Pete was going to pick Kiss as his first band, I remember Pete saying through many shows how he always says kiss was his first favourite band before he got heavy into Black Sabbath. My list for this would have been 10-Budgie, 9-Yes, 8-Boston, 7-AC/DC, 6-UFO, 5-Rush, 4- Max Webster, 3-Led Zeppelin, 2-Beatles 1-Kiss
That right there is a solid list. Any list that has Budgie and UFO is an excellent one.
@@Nick-qf7vt agreed, two bands that should have had way more success
At age 13 on 1-1-80: the Beatles, Styx, Kiss, Paul McCartney and Wings. Possibly ELO based on radio listening alone, and maybe I’d discovered Rush by that time too. I dug into things more deeply in high school in the early ‘80s.
1- Pink Floyd
2- Yes
3- Led Zeppelin
4- Zappa/Mothers
5- Bob Dylan
6- David Bowie
7- Black Sabbath
8- Deep Purple
9- Rolling Stones
10- Alice Cooper
Honorable mentions : Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, Beatles, The Nice, ELP, CCR, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Kinks, The Who, Rare Bird, Blind Faith, King Crimson, Uriah Heep
Pete, Martin, glad to see Queen so high on the Top 10's. Funny thing: "Crazy little thing called love" was released in 1979 (October in Europe, December in US). Would that single have changed your mind about them? Cheers.
A list of favorite bands to debut since January 01, 2000 would be nice.
Top ten favourite bands of the last 20 or 30 years would be an interesting follow up given the natural focus on older bands
1. David Bowie
2. Black Sabbath
3. King Crimson
4. Judas Priest
5. Yes
6. Pink Floyd
7. Hawkwind
8. Rainbow
9. Uriah Heep
10. Wire

So fast forward a little to say, 1984, and think about what if the music world ended 1/1/80, then my list would be:
Iron Butterfly
Led Zeppelin
Aerosmith
The Who
The Doors
Rush
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Styx
Billy Joel
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Being the same age range as our hosts, I'll go with my top 10 listened to during that timeframe:
1. Beatles
2. Led Zep
3. Kiss
4. Lyn Skyn
5. Montrose(loved all 4)
6. Aerosmith
7. Ted Nugent
8. Wings
9. Thin Lizzy
Nice. I would also include Alice Cooper, David Bowie and 10cc. Queen at that time is also a no-brainer.
Loved both those shows with Jack .
I always learn so much every on all the shows

6. Aerosmith
7. Uriah Heep
8. Queen

Honorable Mentions (Alphabetical)
- Deep Purple
- Foghat
- Grand Funk Railroad
- J. Geils Band
- Judas Priest
- Lynryrd Skynryd
- Rush
Again, what a fantastic show this was!!
@@jimmycampbell78 that was a great period for British music too. Liked those bands at the time. Suede, Pulp, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers.
Great show as always,... I have an interesting topic to throw out there, How about favorite bands per decade. The basis for the discussion would be what a certain band did in that particular decade.
10. Steely Dan
9. Fleetwood Mac
8. Styx
7. Rush
6. Supertramp
5. Beatles
4. Yes
3. Alan Parsons Project
2. Kansas
1. Genesis
Honorable mention: Heart
Excellent list!!!
I really only started getting into music when I was 8-9 years old on 1975-76, so my favorites in those 5 years would have been:
Styx, Foreigner, Elton John, The Beatles, and the Doors.
Yep, we have!

Ted Nugent - ( Drops off after the first 3 albums.)
The Sweet - ( Loved them from early on. Just falls short for new interest in newer bands by 1980.)
Devo - ( I know only 2 albums, but a friend called me up and said you are the only one weird enough who will get this. The first album in 1978 blew my mind, as to what a band could sound like.)
Styx - ( Loved Grand Illusion through Cornerstone. Can't say I listened to anything from the first 6 albums till after 1980.)
The Doors - (Love them still, barely didn't make this list. Had a lot of new interests at the time.)
Elton John - ( Loved him from an early age. But his late 70s catalog didn't grab me. He falls short by 1980.)
Alice Cooper - ( Probably the first group that wasn't introduced to me by my Dad (50s rock, Motown, Beatles, Stones, the Who, Jimi, CCR). The start of my music. That was for me. But by the end of the decade KISS had taken the stage theatrical thing even further. I also never got to see him live till '86. No videos of the old shows till after 1980. So only pictures in magazines and posters. He took a slight dip around 1980. But remains one of my favorites of all time.)

Thanks Pete and Martin for this list this was fun to listen to I'm 48 yrs old now so unfortunately was only born in 1973 so music for me didn't enter my world until around 1985 when I was twelve through friends in my neighborhood and also a cousin of mine introducing heavy metal to me and I was hooked in immediately and then started collecting heavy metal albums and cassettes not too long after but I decided to base this on if I was born in say 1960 that would make me thirteen in 1973 and knowing my tastes in music and knowing also what I know today about 1970's hard rock and heavy metal and the bands that I love now from that era what bands would be my favorites if the world ended on Jan.1, 1980 which btw would make twenty years old......so here it is:
1. Kiss
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Deep Purple
4. Queen
5. Black Sabbath
6. Pink Floyd
7. Rush
8. Scorpions
9. Styx
10.(tied) Blue Oyster Cult and UFO
Honorable Mentions:
Judas Priest
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Aerosmith
The Who
AC/DC
The Beatles
The Ramones
My top ten list prior to the 80s:
1.Priest - Unleashed or if studio Stained
2.Sabbath - Sabotage
3.Rush - Farewell to Kings
4.Kiss - Hotter than Hell
5.Queen - Sheer Heart Attack… or Jazz
6.Thin Lizzy - Black Rose
7. Scorpions - Virgin Killer
8. Genesis - Lamb Lies Down
9. Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
10. Yes - Fragile
I might be forgetting something, but these albums and bands still kick ass and I am 100% happy with this list.
