It just isn't Christmas until you've heard this song. Love it. Papa was just like the guy with the lights. He deserved that beer after getting them all done. :)
"Rigging up the lights.." "I'M TRYING TO RIG UP THESE LIGHTS!" "WHAT!? WE HAVE NO EXTENSION CORDS!?" "NOW WHY THE HELL ARE THEY BLINKING!?!?!?" "ONE LIGHT GOES OUT AND THEY ALL GO OUT!" "GET A FLASHLIGHT I BLEW A FUSE!" "FINE, YOU'RE SO SMART, YOU RIG UP THE LIGHTS!" Yeah, um. Yeah.
Because it just isn't Christmas until you listen to this demented delight. The "rigging up the lights" guy is totally my dad. He said all those things (and worse) every year when putting up the lights.
Definitely. I can relate to a couple of this guy's challenges. Fortunately, I enjoyed putting up the lights so when some of these challenges came up, while I may have cursed a bit and grumbled a lot, I still enjoyed the work and got the job done.
I think most people can agree the Lights Guy is the best part. However, the 11th day of the in-laws lady was subtly hilarious: "she's a witch. I hate her." What's great about her whole part is that she sounds believably stressed, almost to the point of tears. Whereas the Lights Guy is getting more and more pissed off, she progresses toward a mental breakdown.
rigging up the lights is the best part bc i like most people have personally went through every one of the struggles that he explains throughout the song. Christmas light are great when they are done but they come with many struggles and a long learning curve
The lights..."What we have no extension cords!" Reminds me of my mother at Christmas growing up, she would have a mini nervous breakdown just because of those lights. lol
my verse of the 12 days of Christmas On the month of Christmas my teacher gave to me 12 finale exams 11 panic attacks 10 thoughts of dieing 9 all nighters 8 hours of crying 7 thoughts of dieing 6 hours of swearing 5 starbucks runs 4 ueseless study guides 3 million roses 2.0 gpa and a mouth of anxiety!!!!
Thanks so much for posting. I remembered this song playing on the radio when I was about 14 and have always remembered the "Batteries not included" line!
What? We have no extension cords? LOL! My dad was an electronic engineer and could never find any extension cords in the house even though he brought home "millions of them" from work.
It’s as old as me and I was born in 85 cause I took the rigging up the lights responsibility from my grandfather and we listened to this before I stated school lol
I just want to say thank you. This was the first UA-cam video I ever saw ten years ago. This video has brought me so much joy over the years and us actually the reason I started watching UA-cam.
The best song ever, i just love this song makes me laugh especially the one about the lights, that me for sure. Merry Christmas everyone.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The father putting up the lights....so totally my dad!! My mom would just take us out until the lights were put up because his language was criminal!!! One year we almost didn't get lights... Ahhhh...those were the days!! LOL
It's funny how much I laughed at this. Just goes to show how simple little reactions with animated characters can be funny if done properly and with the right lyrics added in to a funny song. Great job, Dave!
Love the part with the lights. As for them blinking, from experience, blinking is far better than flickering! Found out one year after rigging up the lights that the lighting fixture I tapped into for the power had the insulating sleeve around its socket was faulty and started shorting out. Glad that was discovered and repaired before we had a fire.
A kid at my school sang this in front of the whole upper school for a performing tradition we have every year before Christmas break and he totally stole the show
Love this! So many funny lines. You should, however, make one correction to the lyrics shown in your video. In the eighth thing about Christmas you transcribe the words being spoken at about 1:57 as "Eh, could you give me a beer, huh?" This is not what's being said in the song. This voice clearly is a reference to the iconic character Archie Bunker from the classic 70s sitcom "All in the Family." In a New York accent Archie always asked his wife, Edith, to get him a beer. Hence, what actually is said in the song is "Uh, Edith get me a beer, huh?" Just thought I'd be annoying and let you know. But the rest of it is very, very funny.
I thought of a parody for this song: The Twelve Pains of College. 1. Getting my homework done. 2. Studying for tests. 3. Homesickness. 4. Paying student loans. 5. High tuitions. 6. Facing my roommates. 7. No ink in printer. 8. Deciding on college classes. 9. Writing long essays. 10. No internet connection. 11. Expensive textbooks. 12. Messy dorm room.
This song would be more interesting if they added more frustrating remarks to the first verse on having a real Christmas tree in your house - the sap, raising it back up when it falls over in the middle of the night, disposing it on New Years, pricking yourself on sharp needles, and I also knew someone who had bugs in his house for days from the tree they brought home.
It's so weird this song plays on the radio up north all the time during Christmas. We moved to Florida, Central Florida on the coast and nobody has ever heard this song. It's f****** weird.
Love this song but I think one of the pains should've been decorating the damn tree like I'm doing now (day 4) with over 40 years worth of ornaments and ones that my mom snuck in as if I wouldn't know. You're video is great, too :)
Just gotta love how the guy hanging up the lights gets angrier each time. Lol.
I love that, tooo
My favorite parts of the song! LOL
Its so hilarious
When i was little i always died when he said now why the fuck are they blinking? And then 1 goes out they all go out
What do you mean there's no extension cords LOL
ONE LIGHT GOES OUT, THEY ALL GO OUT!!!
It just isn't Christmas until you've heard this song. Love it. Papa was just like the guy with the lights. He deserved that beer after getting them all done. :)
Damn pre lit trees are the worse now
Half my tree lights went out Christmas 2019. Aaargh!! 😡😩 Lol
Probably the best Christmas song of all time. I remember having this cassette tape in HS and loving this. Now I actually live this life lol

Because it just isn't Christmas until you listen to this demented delight. The "rigging up the lights" guy is totally my dad. He said all those things (and worse) every year when putting up the lights.
I'm willing to bet all of our dads had a few choice phrases for those friggin' lights!
same here..and boy was it funny
😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love that lights guy, he's so funny

yeah my mom got so mad at the Christmas tree lights that she cut the lights off the tree b/c she could not find the end of the lights.
It’s been years, and I still can’t get into the holidays spirit until I watch this video. Thank you for being a part of my family’s traditions. :)
Same!
14 years later and I’m still listening to this
i love that hangover guy gets progressively more drunk
and lights guys gets progressively more pissed off

Rigging up the lights is so my father... he went all out like Clark Griswold every single year. Insanity. lol
He's EVERYONE'S father. Or stepfather. Or crazy Uncle. Or any male relative really.
You got that right - "You're so smart, YOU do it!!" I swear that's a direct quote from my dad!
10 years later and it’s still so brilliant
Listened to this song a lot when I was younger and I've only now been able to find it again
This never gets old, so funny 😂😂
This song is so great. I wish they would play it on radio stations that play holiday music every November and December. 🙂
I listen to this song every year, and I love it.

This goes back to the 90's or sooner actually. How prophetic it to be New Yorkers creating this merry Melody! Ha!
