  • I picked up this 1961 Chevrolet BelAir 4 door post this summer at a garage sale. It took me a few months to get it home but lets see if we can get this thing to run!! Story goes, an old bachelor had this thing for many years and the gentleman I got it from purchased it from his estate but never did anything with it in the 20 years he had it. It was last licensed in 1974! Let's see if we can get this 235 inline six to breathe fire again! This 1961 sedan along with the other 4 door hardtop have been sold! As always, thanks for watching!

My grandparents had a 1961 Bel Air 4-door sedan like this when I was a little boy. I haven't seen any pictures of it for many years but it was either Seafoam Green (like Mortske's Impala) or Seamist Turquoise. When they owned it they lived in an apartment on a steep hill in the Twin Peaks area of San Francisco. I remember being scared when sitting in the back seat of my parents' Impala when going up that hill. In 1971 my grandfather sold the car to his wife's nephew and bought a used 1970 Impala that had air conditioning. All of us took a cross country trip that summer in that car because only it had AC. He bought both the 1961 Bel Air and 1970 Impala from a friend who was district zone manager for Chevrolet.

Had a thought about debris in the intake. Remove the spark plugs so the valves can’t pull vacuum, then stick the shop-vac down the throat of the intake and crank the engine so that you pull vacuum back through each of the valves. Maybe clean out the loose stuff anyway. Experiment for a future project?

Just an observation- seems like Duff likes his cars the way my brother likes his women, the trashier the better...
I enjoy watching you pull vehicles out of a field and work on them. You take on some pretty well worn stuff.
Quick story, my grandmother had a 1961 Belair Post 235 3 speed. My Dad and uncle rebuilt the motor in our garage when the body was pretty decent. It ended up rusted out so bad she couldn't drive it anymore but the motor ran like a top. she had a wheat field way back behind the barn that had patches of horseweeds that didn't get cut and it made sort of a maze. My cousin, brother and I (I was driving and only about 14 years old) slipped the old Belair back in the field one night and were making laps and kept getting braver/faster with each round. finally ended up on two wheels darn near rolling it, seemed like forever before it finally came back down. We were scared to death. We still talk about that night at family get togethers. Funny how working on or driving cars seems to be the common thread between some friends and families. Had a great time growing up helping my Dad and Grandpa work on stuff. Hopefully I can have some fun with my grandson working on junk... when he is old enough to twist wrenches....

The little 235 that could. It seemed like it wasn't gonna run with such low compression. But it provex us wrong. Great video.

Noticed during your first prolonged attempt to get it to fire one of the valves on number 5 never moved....then about 20 minutes into the video later....you saw the rod off and stuck valve....lol

My first car was a 1961 BelAir. I got it off of one of my aunts friends in a nursing home for $200.00. It only had 35,000 original miles! I loved that car.

I admit I know little to nothing about working on cars but there's something really satisfying about seeing old cars like this run again after being abandoned for so long.

I love these "make it run" videos... my first car was a 1959 Bel Air with the 235 and Powerglide. My Dad told me that it didn't have enough power to "pull a greasy string out of a cat's a$$"! It had plenty of body weight reduction-- you could see the road going by through the holes in the floorboards-- but it was pretty reliable. One day, I went to start her up, and the battery was on its' last legs. It was on the verge of starting, but wouldn't turn over one more time. Completely frustrated, I opened the hood and pushed down on one of the fan blades. Of course that was all it took to make it roar into life... nearly taking my hand off at the same time! I had forgotten that the key was still in the "on" position! I remember buying 14" recapped tires for the car for $14.99 each... nothing but the best for me! Great vids, Mortske! Pet Duff for me!

when it's low on compression toss a cap full of oil down the plug holes it will raise the compression if it's the rings and you should get it to pop off.

The thing with those 235 oil filters is they are hooked to the oil pump bypass outlet. If the pump never reaches full pressure the oil never comes out the bypass line to the filter.

    • @MortskeRepair

But that's where the oil pressure sender is hooked up. So it better have oil pressure there.

Man, you really make these revival videos look easy, Mortske. I just got back from VA after doing a revival on a truck sitting ~14 years, and I don't have anywhere near the content, nor am I relishing editing it all to try and make a cohesive video. Still gonna give it the old community college try, however.

Your rubber band around the foot idea reminded me of my 70 nova when the throttle cable broke. It was my daily driver at the time & I needed to get to work so I tied a speaker wire to the throttle arm fed it through the firewall tied a loop on the inside and I attached it to the Velcro loop on the top of my high top sneakers. Pull my foot back car went. Fixed until I got a "new " junkyard cable

Tech tip from my old Dad - use a little wipe of washing up liquid on hoses/pipes/bushes that you need to install - helps lubricate the 2 surfaces then just dries out!
