I find it interesting that no matter how you feel about a game, no matter the quality of the game, you can still love its soundtrack. The majority of Sonic games are a great example of this.

This game deserves better and a remaster
With the problems this game had I don’t even think a sequel could save it. It might have had some good qualities but it had far too many bad ones and this game will probably be remembered as one of the worst 3D platforming games in the 21st century.

The Story was great, the sound track was great, the way the game controlled was great, the art was great, the characters were great, the themes were great.
The only problems was the story implementation was mediocre and the game design was unpolished. The devs were hit hard on a two year time and one of those years was covid.

I think the only good parts of this game were the cutscene visuals and the music.
The game design was not "unpolished", let's not kid ourselves. I'll defend the story's writing (albeit with trash implementation), the absolute peak character design and art direction, and the fantastic music. But the game itself as a GAME was fucking wretched, and let's be frank, it was a video game. That's kind of the most important part.
There's no version of reality where anyone can rationalize things like having literally every single button on the controller mapped to jump/interact as simply a lack of polish. They went well beyond unpolished and firmly into horrendous yet intentional game design territory. Fuck's sake, the most prominent side activity in the game was literally just AFKing next to a wheel for literal hours while a number ticked up.
But even beyond that, the stage design was wretched. Like, amateur at times. With things like jumps you tangibly cannot see coming due to camera angle that always result in cheap deaths. And it's not like Yuji Naka doesn't know how to make a good bloody platformer. He's done it several times in the past.
