Actually, why DIDN'T we get to play as Balan?! The title is "BALAN Wonderworld," and Balan is the character who shows up the most in the cover art and ads! Instead, we have him as a guide character who you sometimes play, I guess.
It's amazing how, despite getting frustrated with the Bouts themselves, I NEVER got tired of this song and it actually kept my spirits up while I was grinding the Excellents XD
I honestly loved the minigame until about halfway through. That's when they become way too long and in the later levels, there's three per stage. It's been a nightmare to 100% this game lmao

This is the company that made the Nier series, Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy. If this game was an anime, it would probably be awesome.

They made sure that the release window was bad, as little marketing as possible and of course constant cut ins while developing. Everything about the games besides The menus and Gameplay are Great. Good story on paper and Novel, GREAT Designs and Charakter's, Good Music and A big World with Bigger Concepts that could be expanded upon. honestly this reminds me of the whole Disney's "Treasure Planet" Situation 1 to 1.
I noticed that the comments seem a bit divided, and even though I'm a year late, I'm going to get my opinion out there. I recently bought the game and, personally, I'm rather enjoying it. The visuals, the soundtrack, the fluffy little bird bunnies, even the hunting for all of the statues. The platforming can be a bit unforgiving, but it's fascinating how there are very few areas in sight you cannot go to eventually. Elements I thought to be distant background pieces turned out completely reachable with the right powers. And yes, I love Balan as a character too. He’s so whimsical and full of life that I can’t help but perk up anytime he’s onscreen. Moreover, while there’s very little connected story in the game that I’ve noticed, I enjoy speculating. What _is_ Wonderworld? How is Balan connected to it? Are the chapters really shows as hinted by the puppet birds and stage setting for the plane-building, or are they real? Aside from being temporarily consumed by negativity, are the human characters connected in some way to Balan or each other? Honestly, the one complaint I have is the infinitely respawning enemies when you need to backtrack or if you slip. Also needing to get all Excellent on Balan’s Bout for the statue with such a narrow margin of error, but that’s more a “me” issue than a game issue. :P The gameplay is a fun time, and the story doesn’t have to be a major element if you take the experience for what it is-a beautiful land to explore. All the same, I heard about the novel and will definitely be looking into that. :3

Man, that section right after the opening horns, that "bum bum bum bum ba da da da," is just so driving and empowering, it carries so much live and drive and pizzazz, I adore it. Such a shame the Sonic curse still follows these guys even when they're not making a Sonic game. We've got top-notch music and visuals, but the game itself is just fundamentally and irreparably broken.

The characters are actually characters! Balan and Lance have SO MUCH more lore to them, and really the whole world. Also every single time balan and Lance speak they speak is verse and it's great
One button Controls, choppy frames, musicals so cringe worthy that you can't help but wonder if they're ironic, story that you have to buy a novel for, terribly sudden graphics shift from the great cgi cut-scenes to the actual game, multiple useless or copied costume, bad level design that more requires you to use up your time instead of actually doing any platforming (take for example, that one gear costume, which doesn't require any skill to be used, so doors that need it to be opened and things that need it to be activated are just a nuisance. Why isn't it just an open hole if you don't have to do anything skill-reliant to get through?)
