Rusty, a rodeo cowboy 🤠, was my imaginary friend who needed his own place at the table, and his special pillow at night. Was starting school when my father panicked, knowing Rusty was about to become an accomplice to my social suicide. Nobody was going to put up with my nonsense.
Then one fine day the family took a little road trip to see the rodeo. To my delight, a handsome cowboy eagerly introduced himself, Rusty, of course. Spent the day walking around riding his shoulders, eating fair food, brushing critters, and having a wonderful day.
    ~POOF~
    Imaginary Rusty vanished forever.
My dad said it was worth what he PAID the guy. 💰

Someone on the writing team either did their research or is from WV. Unsafe conditions in mines and opioid crisis are ongoing problems there. And I wonder if Sam is meant to have chimerism, its a condition where twins fuse - not quite like conjoined twins, its way earlier in development- so theres one fetus that forms with two distinct genomes.

he is shozphrenic, for my friend who lives with paranoid schizphrenia his whole life, this was literaly description of his mind state and life.. his imaginary friend showed up when he was 5 ( normaly kids lose those till age 8), his never left, in puberty at age 13 he was having first signs of visibel shizophrenia, but such diagnosis can't be done till certain age, at 16 it was obvious what it is, at 20 he got offical diagnosis.. hi literaly told me, having schizphrenia is like this game.
he actually gave me a whole explanation how it works , when he had clear and sane period and taking meds regulary. i put explanation up there under video. ...

@@boredutopiaweird, adolescents rarely get schizophrenia. It's not of an adult mental illness that you can develop between 20s -40, even if it runs in your family. Not doubting you or your friend, just saying it's very rare for kids to have that. There's exceptions to everything I guess.

I like your theory about the absorbed twin and yeah, knew right away when they mentioned pain meds, along with the time period (mid 2010s), the setting, etc, that's where they'd go with it. I also knew right away the nice pharmacist will come into play, hence him bothering running a pharmacy in the middle of no where. Haven't watched all of it yet, but that's my hunch. Goes along with how there were shady doctors and pharmacists making a lot of money on the side.
I know it's going to make me mad too. No one talks about how the opiate epidemic was made even worse by government crack down (there's now more ODs than back then at the peak) because you can't just cut off millions of people from those and how now legit patients are suffering. Cracking down solved nothing except people take fent instead of pills and patients can't get anything for their pain anymore. Typical government, typical US approach, of all or nothing. They can never take a common sense approach to issues. Feast or famine. There was easy solutions besides take them away from everyone and letting it be a free for all -- like computer linking medical records and pain clinics actually bothering to weed out addicts.
Just sucks as someone with extreme pain. I have to jump through hoops. Can't complain though when there's amputee's being told no and cancer patients being told no. Take cancer causing Tylenol or cataract causing steroids.

@@RR-on4sk first signs are hard to recognise, first onset can be at the age of 16, thing is there is different types of it and it takes a long time to figure it out, that's why it is usually diagnosed later in life (30+) coz it comes to a point that person do serious sh%t and must be hospitalised, same is with bipolar 1. I spent a lot of time in mental hospitals since of age 16, have c PTSD since age 9), met bunch of teens there with various diagnosis in observation. Schizophrenics in my country got first diagnosis between ages 30 and 40 coz they go undetected, but first signs they all had at age 16-18 but was diagnosed as some kind of pschiosis, my country could be specific coz of war, so probably many teens and kids had war as a trigger for earlier onset for many mental conditions they had a gene, schizophrenia is individual, same as bipolar, 2 persons with same condition can manifest condition differently, plus manic phase in bipolzr can look like schizophrenia, ptsd pshicosis too, so many go undetected coz they get wrong diagnosis, plus bunch of teens and kids was raised by parents with untreated PTSD and their growth was seriously affected by it. In some cases or areas various conditions can be triggered earlier than in some other areas if person carries a gene, coz of war, coz of poverty, trauma etc. In my country after the war many teens were diagnosed with PTSD which later developed into something else or they got diagnosis of psi hosis wich later was replaced with real diagnosis like schizophrenia. My friend was also affected by war but not on a way I did, his house was burned in front of him, father was taken away and later ki%d, he have gene and probably it was trigger by that trauma earlier than it is usual for people in some other areas. Same is with very rare condition of split personality, west professionals can work 40 years and never see one. Well I met many people with it when I was part of support group for survivors of ethnic cleansing, there were people from sudan, former yugoslavia and many other places who were kids when traumatic events occured, 5 in group had that condition, 3 were not even aware, neither did therapists until they shifted. We still know very little about our own brain and mental conditions and what triggers them and why...

I think choosing the imaginary friend is like choosing the ego-defense mechanism that creates a protective delusion so he can function in society and not have to feel his traumas, like a comfortable lie. Then choosing the mind palace is accepting the harsh truth about reality and society. They didn't really explain it very well in the dialogue though.

Sam is most likely schizophrenic. His imaginary friend, voices in his head saying terrible things while he struggles for control, going into some kind of catatonic state…
I had known a girl who had schizophrenia. She was incredibly talented author, but unfortunately her life was affected by her condition. She was talking to me several months, maybe half a year and then she’s gone. Never received any reply or heard from her again.
So, she sometimes tried to describe to me what her life feels like. I think she sought compassion or understanding, maybe. She heard voices which said mean, awful things about her and about people around. She said the voices always sounded real, as if someone stood behind her shoulder and talked to her. It was hard to make a distinction; so she began to think that every bad thing is coming from these imaginary voices by default. She said she’d not be able to live thinking that everyone is cursing her constantly, blaming and shaming her for whatever she does, swearing at her, calling her names etc. sometimes (I think when she got mad at someone) these voices became angry and violent and cursed the person who hurt her feelings, wished them dead. Then, she also revealed that she had couple of imaginary friends, but she described them more like advisors or counsellors of some sort. These imaginary persons were more calm and less violent, they advised her what to do and how to react; sometimes comforted her when she felt sad and lonely. She said she actually saw them, like any other real person. And she sometimes dozed off in the middle of conversation; daydreaming or escaping into her mind palace, I don’t know. I guess it’s called catatonic state? Like her body was there when her mind wasn’t; but she’d continue to stand where she stood, or sometimes proceed to do what she did but with that blank stare. She was on pills, but I guess that her therapy needed corrections, as it didn’t work as it should. Besides imaginary friends, she also had imaginary enemy, but she didn’t discuss it much. Maybe talking about it may trigger her and provoke this imaginary enemy to show up.
Having thoughts and talking to yourself is not uncommon; but if there is no clear distinction between reality and imagination, it is a reason to be concerned and seek professional advice.

sam is shizophrenic, my friend who suffers from paranoid szhizophrenia when i asked him how it is for him, he said kinda like this game, you have ''friend'' in your head, you can actually see him , but it is manifestation of your other personality, not like split personality, but it is like your ego and alter ego arguing over choices or things in your mind and you actually halucinate and see him. and it can start in very young age, with imaginary friends, but it kicks in around teen years, thaz why majority of kids of certain age naturaly lose imaginary friends, if they stick around after certain age ( usualy 7 or 8 they should be gone by then) that is a sign of something more serious, if they still persits in teen years and adulthood that is a sign of mental condition..
some people actually see ''friend'' for others is just a voice, it dependes how bad sickness is, in wich stage. sam was taking some meds in game if i remeber good. then he stoped it, when that is done combined with stress ( like funeral, wedding, social events) paranoia kicks in, there is whole scenario, thru people actually go thru, halucinations,. hey aactualy think things are happening when they dont. but for them they are real, even dialogs with real people in their lives wich actually never happened, situations wich happened mixed with heir paranoia and delusions wich did not happen..
he told me that literaly there are fights, chased, runs etc inside mind and he can actually see it, like going thru it, it is halucinations, when his granfather died he actually believed his grand dad was killed and had insane story how he was spy, he disspiered for a week, was found in his own reality. same is with sam, he developed whole story in his head but chose to be well at the endm chosing mind palace and continue with therapy, choosing ''friend'' would be accepting his reality and continuing with delusions, paranoa choosing mind palace he. accepted his condition. thaz why at the end we dont actually see what happened with other charchters, coz nothing happened, stuff and events were inside sam's mind, did not actually happen. same is with Anna, he was in a car and when he chose mind palace, he was alone in a car, where did she go? she was never in a car...he drove and had a moment and suddendly after all this thing in his mind, he is driving alone, and then Anna shows up again, she walked all that time, nope, he literaly is switching between reality and his reality, internal fight inside him for control over his mind and condition, but he is winning and losing in same time..
