Why are the freelance writing standards so high in 2024? Is it worth it to be a freelance writer?

I realized in 2010 or 2011 that the old days of freelancing were over.
In the 1990s when I started , you could be a decent to good writer
And get hired by publications and outlets and companies on your work alone.
    Not anymore.
A writer in 2024 is no longer just a writer but a marketer.
Thus now I'm on substance but I promote my articles and outlets
By going on podcasts and radio shows when I get the bookings.
I market my work on you tube, tik tok, instagram, Facebook , X.
I actua!ly spend more time promoting and marketing than writing these days.
    So much for retirement .
    My advice is
    1) get on every online platform you can
    2) mention every article, piece, piece of copy, technical writing material , book you write, every time you write it
    3) market every article, piece of copy , book etc every time you write it
    4) if you can get on media programs on TV, you tube, podcast, radio, do so and do it regularly online
    5) Get the word out to.the general public that you are a freelance writer

Something you said that’s very important is that you fill your feed with the right writers for you. I think I have the wrong mix and it’s been affecting my mental in the profession seeing so much of that on my LinkedIn feed. Do you think it’s smart for me to clean up my follow list or is that a bad idea?

It will take time to fix your LinkedIn feed. Don't engage in the posts you see and connect with or follow editors, content leads and people that hire writers.

Thanks for this. I need to revamp my LinkedIn feed because it has begun to drag me down. I'm older and sometimes feel as though I don't have the knowledge or am not "cool" enough to have a writing career. All the "bro" writers the past few years were hard to contend with, and now, it's AI and having to know this, that, and the other thing.
I'm supposin' the best thing to do is to put on a blindfold, hop in my freelance writer silo, find my own true style, hone my skill set, and pitch constantly and consistently.

At times this is what you have to do for sure! Put the blinders on and get to work! Good luck!
