Why I am no longer freelance writing on Fiverr

  • After nearly a decade freelance writing off Fiverr, I have stepped away indefinitely for a number of reasons. Most importantly, I have more to offer the world, which is why I am overseeing the building of a farm and education center in Upstate New York.
Please watch this video in its entirety, where I go over why BEGINNER freelancers should STILL be using Fiverr. Remember, I did this for nearly 9-years - if you are only 1 or 2 years into the journey, then you should absolutely be on Fiverr sourcing clients.
This is a perfect transition for the videos I have coming your way, talking more about land acquisition, making money off hobby farming, working with the Amish on my barn, and the future of housing: hint hint, it's living in a multi-purpose barn!

Hi Alex, Fiverr has changed so much in the last two years. The only way to get orders now is through promoted gigs. If you don't participate in this process, you will just disappear from the platform. So now you don't just pay 20% to Fiverr. You're also paying between $100 - $200 on promoted gigs. It's insane. Not sure how first timers will fair.

    • @AlexandraFasuloBiz
      @AlexandraFasuloBiz  2 місяці тому +9

That is crazy - I am sorry to hear that. I've always had a problem with how they run their platform - sad to see they don't understand how important the actual TALENT is.

It's quite true about the $100 - $200 on promoted gigs. I did it for a while until I came to the conclusion it was pointless and just shut them off in frustration. Then the algorithm somehow returned to sending me orders organically again. Sadly Fiverr doesnt seem to be improving...it actually seems to be getting worse

Way to go, Alexandra! A very smart move. I've been on Fiverr since 2015, TRS, Fiverr Pro, and I'm leaving as well, for all of the reasons you just mentioned. Also, they recently did another of their complex "updates" that has effectively killed my income. Last straw, it was time.

Not sure if I’ll keep it much longer though. Would love a video on how/whether you funneled potential clients to your website or if you closed it out and told past clients your move…🫶🏽

Love it Alex! Such a great perspective! Fiverr has definitely changed and alot of categories, like writing and even voiceovers (that I was mainly doing for a long time) have either become too saturated or taken over by AI. Its a new landscape for sure, but I have noticed bigger clients coming onto the platform lately (at least for me and alot of my students), but it's not the same as it was a couple years ago. Love seeing the progress on your barn, looks sooooo amazing!!!

Good stuff as always, Alex! So cool what you're doing with the barn. I definitely feel a pull to connect more with people offline.
Most of my clients have come from in-person networking and from my podcast (Social Media Magic). I'm actually thinking of getting on Fiverr now for some lower-ticket, one-off projects like UGC content so I can pass on more work to my team as I build it into an agency!

7 years on Fiverr and I didn't go on vacation mode once... But I did take nice vacations... There are ways around it... But I definitely want to take my expertise off of Fiverr. I am a fashion designer with real industry experience for 15 years, only in freelance the last 7 years. I have soooo much knowledge that could make so much more money off of Fiverr... I see other fashion designers making 110K + per year working off of Fiverr and I am just breaking 40K a year. I can't complain too much, because it is paying the bills, but I wish I could figure out how to push through and make more off of freelance platforms.

I also habe the problem that I have a lot of people that want my prices pushed down so I would rater make no money at all.

I'm a long-standing, top-rated, five-star content writer on Fiverr with perfect metrics. It was my primary income stream for about five years and demand far exceeded my capacity. But, at least in my little corner of the platform, the market seemed to go into free fall after the release of GPT4. Now, no matter how I set my pricing, I am seeing abysmal impressions and only returning clients - the ones who still want a human writer. I feel pretty pessimistic about the impact this will have on the digital landscape in the long run.

Hi Alex! Great video. You are always on point and your financial IQ is admirable. You've been a great inspiration to my freelancing career. Im a seller on Fiverr at the highest level but not pro and I have been thinking in the lines of what you have just said here. The platform prioritizes buyers over the talent and seems to be getting worse. To make a farming pun, its like they are trying to get more milk out of the cow by squeezing the cow to death. I feel its very shortsighted and retrogressive and might cause the platform to be low-budget forever. Thanks for saying it as it is ...even though this is tantamount to a declaration of war lol...but somebody with influence had to say it...and I believe there's nobody better to get the message through than you. Thank you for the insight. Wish you all the best with your agricultural journey.

I really admire your hustle. You are well known and don’t need them, and I agree it is best for new workers. I have bought Fiverr stock and this perspective is valuable to understand it from an investment perspective. I own my own agency and I do hire freelancers but have not used that platform. It seems to me they should offer platform services that are available for established agencies. I think that would boost their revenue.

Yes! I’ve been thinking of closing my Fiverr since it seems I hadn’t gotten any inquiries for months even though I’ve NEVER put it on vacation mode and always respond within 1 to 7 hours, depending on the time of year.
I’ve gotten more clients to get off the platform and use my Contra or invoicing system when we get on a video chat and I mention Fiverr’s cut of my profits and their purchase. Most buyers I’ve talked to also don’t like that so if you can, mention that when on a consult call.
I’m a freelance writer AND a book editor and have found that, before my writing services were more popular. Now, authors find me more often than not which is great since I can’t always know when a new author is done with their book and ready for me to help! I’m revamping my website for SEO to be found for book editing and my LinkedIn has been giving me the most client inquires and biggest packages. I’m just two years in full-time but am ready to grow beyond what Fiverr can give. It’s been my supplemental search engine for people to find me but not sure it’s worth the few orders I get every month or so.🤷🏽‍♀️

In my case, they closed my Fiverr account because someone who didn't know their policies sent me their contact information. That's when I knew I couldn't depend on Fiverr. What worked for me was through collaboration with small to medium sized companies, who were in the same industry as me, but doing different things. We negotiate on the price, and how much they take per project. They would just add my services under their portfolio, then send me projects whenever they get clients. Now I get 10 times the orders than I did

Real talk. I never had seen success with any platform. Not Fiverr, Upwork, Contra, or any of them. I built everything from networking and through another selling space entirely. Some people need training wheels while others figured out how to ride a bike without any of them.
The market is in a weird flux right now, though. This is regardless of freelancer platforms. But the key should be diversifying your income right now.

Good decision. Fiverr should live with the new and beginner sellers/freelancers. Fiverr gives no respect or value to the veterans and experienced freelancers. Looks like, Fiverr wants everything 'cheap'! And it is all about "THEM" and their "Buyers". When I was a beginner seller, my work was mediocre at best. Now that I have completed 300+ orders, there is a huge difference in the quality of work between my beginner self and experienced self. But that doesn't mean anything to Fiverr, it seems. From their sellers/freelancers, they want the best quality of work, with lowest price(free might be better), with a duck-tape on the mouth, no hope and no-self respect
