Thank you, Uncle Momo, for your attention to this song! The song about the towel was written by the Ukrainian poet Andriy Malyshko. Since the song has become very popular, many people think it is a folk song. This song is a confession-memoir of the lyrical hero, who recalls that his mother gave him a towel embroidered as a symbol of his life's journey. There is a tradition in Ukraine to embroider a towel and give it to those we love and want to protect. People often give an embroidered towel before saying goodbye for a long time. The character in the song remembers his mother with great warmth. With this work, the author raises the issue of childhood, as well as farewell to the parental home and maternal anxiety about the fate of her own child. This is why this song is so popular. It is also often performed at graduation ceremonies when students leave school.
I also recommend comparing Kvitka Cisyk's performance of this song:

One of the most famous Ukrainian opera singers is Solomiya Krushelnitska. She sang with Chaliapin and Enrique Caruso. Solomiya was considered one of the best opera singers of the early 20th century and one of the brightest performers of Madame Butterfly. There are many of her recordings on UA-cam, but all were made at the beginning of the 20th century and are not of very high quality.

That concert was in 2001, Dmytro Hnatyuk was born in 1925 meaning he would have been in his late 70's. He was a national treasure of Ukraine and one of the best voices to grace the stage. A performer of all types of music and a true musician. The song is about a towel that was symbolically given to a young man by his mother upon leaving the house to start his life. The towel was meticulously embroidered by the mother starting at the birth of her son with the idea being it would be finished when the young man was ready to leave the family home and begin his own family. This song is about a young man leaving home and receiving his towel from his mother... along with her love.

This a war song, about a lad going for a war
Dearest Mother of Mine, you had many sleepless nights
You led me to the fields next to the village
And on my long journey, you saw me off at dawn
And gave me an embroidered towel for luck

And on my long journey, you saw me off at dawn
And gave me an embroidered towel for luck and destiny

Let the dewy road blossom on it
Along with the green glens and groves full of nightingales
And your faithful, kind, motherly smile
    And your sad, dear eyes

And your faithful, kind, motherly smile
And your sad, dear, blue eyes

I'll take this towel, and unfold it as if destiny
In the quiet, rustling meadows, and chirping oak-woods
And on this little towel, will live the familiar pain
My childhood, seperation, and unconditional love

And on this little towel, will live all the familiar pain
My childhood, seperation, and your motherly love

From birth to death, a towel accompanied a Ukrainian throughout his life. A small child was received on a clean white towel, or just a cloth, which was called kryzhmo, which symbolized the purity of the newborn soul. A long, rectangular piece of cloth always meant a road for our ancestors, a path that leads a person, helps him live. In the same way, they escorted the soul on a long journey, lowering the body of the deceased to the pit on towels or canvas. As in the case of the crucifixion at the birth of a child, the body of the deceased was wrapped in a shroud made of clean, bleached cloth, wishing him a further bright path in the star worlds.
Throughout life, a person was accompanied by towels. They helped during the calendar-ritual annual cycle in various works, holidays, and rituals. Even long before Christian times, people hung woven and embroidered towels in sacred groves and groves, where they communicated with the Creator. After all, all of Nature is his creation, and he resides in every animate and inanimate form. Towels were a kind of mediators, that is, mediators between God and Man. Those codes, keys that were applied to towels, thanks to lines and colors, helped people to communicate with the invisible world, which is inhabited by various spirits.
Towels were always hung on the penance, the holy place where the whole family gathers for a meal, sanctifying it with prayer. In fact, towels played the role of the same holy images. With the introduction of Christianity, they did not disappear, but began to coexist with icons, serving as decoration for them.
On a towel embroidered in bright, cheerful colors, without a single black stitch, the child was carried to baptism.
the most widely used towel was in the wedding ceremony.
In order to have a ready-made embroidered towel, it was necessary to put in a lot of effort and work. First of all, it is spinning threads and weaving cloth for towels. The towel was a sacred thing and was treated with extremely high respect.

It's more closely translated as "My dear mother". Not "native".
Yes, "рідна" is literally "native" - when talking about a land or language, etc., or, when talking about a living human, it means "biologically related".
But in Ukrainian it also serves as an endearment. Something native/biologically realted - is always familiar and feels like home, so it's dear to your ❤.
So when we say "My native mom" we mean an endearment and we actually mean "my dear/ beloved mom"
