This tutorial was great!!! Mine has had issues for probably 16yrs with the drawer tray not opening and shutting properly and not recognizing disks at all. I did everything he showed, and it worked great until I put it back in my current stack of media stuff. I determined that the weight of the other components was too much since the foot of the receiver pressed down on the top cover right above the reading apparatus. Thx heaps for making this video. Had disk get stuck and snap prior to finding this. It would occasionally function then get stuck with disks not seating in platter correctly. Scored a complete ta av561 surround sound system for $70nzd .... have reset the cd player as shown in video everything working as discribed now. Anyhow thx again, bigg upps!🎉🎉
Good video covering many common problems. Unfortunately, the problem I am having with my Sony CDP CE375 is the tray table will not eject. You can hear the motor trying to turn the gears but nothing is moving. It's obviously the rubber belt is broken. This particular model is different and I was looking for how to separate the bottom from the circuit boards. Not covered on this video but the similarities were enough that I could figure out how to do it.
Problem#1 fixed with your help. Had to improvise--loosen tab and screw on the other side as well and on the interior metal frame (both sides). Then it worked and tray could be repositioned. Thanks!!
Thank you that was helpful, got it playing, I hope it will last a little longer, the thing was built in '97 according to a young man on the previous video.
Awesome video! Was able to tear my CDP-CE245 down entirely to clean up that encoder switch, which has given me some intermittent trouble. Was also able to align the whole tray mechanism.

Thank you so much for the video, just resurrected my Sony CDP-CE315 from completely useless to fully functional. Love the output signal adjustment on this unit, and easy mapping the songs from various discs. Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a 7 year old Denon DCM-290 that quit playing while loaded with CDs. Electronics seemed to work but tray would not eject. After watching your video I realigned the tray to the gears and all is well. Thanks again.
We have a cdp-c325 that will open and close normally, but when it picks up the disc to play it, it will not spin. It will then drop the disc and move to the next opening. It will pause and try to pick up disc's from empty spots instead of just passing them by. Any thoughts? Could I be missing a little belt that makes the disc spin?
Agree this is one of the best tutorials I’ve seen on CD player repair. I have this player and the sled opens and closes more slowly when I hit the exchange button, versus the o-en/close button. It even seems to grind a bit near full open. Yet it’s smooth and crisp when I hit open/close. What would cause that? The sensor you cleaned?
great vid with calm clear knowledgeable detail. I 'fixed' a stuck tray one (C661) and a small mechanical white plastic part just fell out. It has a pin hole where I guess it gets attached, and shovel/spade part extending out from the pin barrel. No idea what it is or if it needs special alignment. Can't seem to attach pic of it here.
These players are very good and wasn't very expensive, after 20 years still working good, by the way CD's are the best way to keep your music for years and years and with a good Audio System you can enjoy beautiful and warm sound.
Thanks for this great video! I have a Sony unit like this that has a random issue when shuffling across all discs. Sometimes when it tries to change discs the drawer pops open a bit. I have to nudge it to get it to close. It also leaves a disc not sitting in the tray correctly. Any thoughts on what could cause this? I can't figure out why it would even try to open the tray when shuffling between discs... that's not a normal function of the shuffle feature
Thanks to your wonderful video, I got the courage to open up my Sony CDP-C245 5-Disc Player that stopped working and displaying a "No Disc" message a few years back, hoping one of your scenarios would help me fix it at last. I loaded one disc into the player and found that the drawer and tray operations seem to be okay. The disc is accessed from any of the bays just fine. The problem is that the disc doesn't spin up to speed. I see a series of short spin attempts accompanied by audible click sounds. After 15 clicks, the attempt fails and the disc is put back into the tray which returns to its "home" position and displays the "No Disc" message. Same behavior from any of the 5 bays. I finally tried to get it to spin manually once the clicking begins. Was able to get it to spin for several slow revolutions at once, but it always comes to a stop. With the disc in bay 3, it will now sometimes not return the disc to the tray at the end of its spin cycle. Just had an attempt that spun on its own without any clicking and then stopped as before. Have you encountered this problem before? Any advice as to how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps this could become the subject for a future video? Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
By any chance, would you have a repair video for a Sony 5 disc player - model C305 (June 1990 vintage)? I accidentally removed the retracting gear for the drawer slide feature and am now having issues getting it re-aligned. Initially, the tray response had failed to perform, so I tried to investigate, got in too deep and now I can't re-assemble correctly. Sound familiar? Thanx.
Played this video 3-4 times as a used Sony CA80ES 5 disc player acted up. Thank you. I've reset the mechanical alignment by the side bracket method more than once but have run into a more intriguing problem. It plays most CDs, but at least 2 encountered fuzzier problems: disc A is not recognized at all by the unit; disc B plays the first couple of minutes of a particular track, but when it reaches a silent passage it stops as if its end had been reached (omitting another half hour of music). Yet both discs play well and completely on a basic portable CD player. Any idea as to what I should be looking at?
Enjoyed the videos -- I've struck out on my attempt at a rehab of a Panasonic 5 CD changer.... I can't get the light unit out -- sled is fine but the disks don't spin up -- Motor seems OK so I think it's the laser. Probably going to e-cycle pile when the COVID is over. Thanks for the education!
Great video. My sony multidisc player is picking up the disc, starts spinning, and stops after about 5-8 seconds. any recommendations on how to approach this problem?
I own the Sony CPD-CE 375 changer . The issue I'm having is that forward facing silver pin on the optical chassis does not align properly with the slots associated with each disk holder on the carousel. Is there a way to realign the carousel in relation to the optical chassis ? The pin currently hits the bottom of the carousel and makes a grinding noise.
Trying to fix one of these now, the CD is slipping on the spindle, like it's not gripping properly? Speeds up and down before it gives up. Mechanism is extremely similar to this one, a Sony CDP-C85ES
Have you run into any with BD PCB problems? Had 2 CDP-C545's come through and the 1st one I had a spare board to replace the bad one but not with the 2nd one. Part is NLA from Sony unless you try one from E-Bay.
Thanks for the video. I just brought my 1993 unit with drawer open/close issues back to life by cleaning the encoder switch. My unit was made in Japan, something very rare to see these days. I guess thats why they lasted so long and continue to do so. Very much worth saving, as a new unit is going for $600 now.
Great repair demo for us DIY junkies. Question how do you properly reconnect those ribbon cables? I realize they are gently push/pull but are they keyed to the socket? In PC repair ribbon cables ate generally marked with a red line to pin 1 however I am not seeing those connectors marked. There is printing on one side. I had disconnected the cables to change out the turntable gear and thought I had replaced them correctly however my cd player powers on and the display lights up but its no longer turning the carousel. I must have hosed up one of these connectors...any suggestions?
Hi Gordon. My 3 Disk changer does not power on at all. Of course I've check the power cord and tried different outlet but to avail. I also checked the main fuse but it looks fine. It's an RCA. Any other suggestion?
Very well detailed, I'm going to take a crack at my system. As my 5 disc player is not working either. Only the radio and tape. I'm hoping it's just the alignment. Lol Thanks again for the professional/detailed instructions. :)
Hi 12voltvids, I have a 24 CD carousel that has stopped ejecting the discs, I can take the top off and get them out manually, but I wondered if you had any ideas? The model is a Sanyo CP-M2403. It's 24 years old so I've had my money's worth, but if I can fix it rather than throw it, then I'd rather do that, let's just say it has a bit of sentimental value. Cheers.
I have a carver cd that is doing something similar to the optical sensor problem. The turntable stops just before it lines up with the laser. Any pointers?
I have a slight issue with a Sony cd player right now. Mine’s a single disc CDP-291, manufactured October 1990. The CD player is extremely sensitive to touch, and will skip forward about 30 seconds when touched. This is after cleaning the lens. Before the lens was cleaned, it took super long to read a disc, and was quite noisy in this process. Also, it would skip right to the end of some CDs in about 20 seconds. (The skips were times exactly the same distance apart from each other, about 4 times per second.) Do I have a dying laser??? I have a feeling this might be my problem. The pickup assembly is a Sony KSS-240A.
@@12voltvids That’s what I thought. On the bright side it’s a KSS-240A pickup assembly which is extremely ubiquitous. It’s one of the only pickup assemblies which are being reproduced by multiple companies today, probably due to their use by SEGA for the short-lived CD-ROM game discs. Maybe they’re not the same build quality as the originals, but they’ve sure resurrected some people’s old CD players!
Hi 12volt! Excellent diagnostic video on Sony carousel CD changers. I have a Sony 2000 CDP-CE375 Issue: Does not reocgnize presence of CDs in trays #2, recognizes them most of the time in #3-5 but does read them in tray #1. If a CD is also in tray 2, the player pauses, for 4-6 sec., then moves onto the next tray, and so on in search of a disc. This doesn't make sense, since there is only one laser-sled assembly, and the carousel just rotates until the requested disc is over that assembly. Any ideas?
Great video! Thank you! Do you know how to change the belt on a Kenwood DV-505 5 disc carousel cd/dvd player. The drawer is stuck closed. It is part of my home theater system & I really want to fix it. Thank you.
I picked up a Sony 5 disk CD changer at a pawn shop today. The tray opens fine, and almost closes but seems to stick with a couple of inches or so of the tray still sticking out. If I give the tray a gentle nudge as it gets to the point where it sticks it will close and play disks. Does that sound like the alignment problem mentioned in the video, or another problem?
Thanks so much for the generosity of your time. My 5 disc changer does the back-and-forth rotation, but only intermittently and, usually, after the player's been going for at least 15 minutes or so. Any thoughts on whether it's worth a lens cleaning first, a wiggle of a loose cable or dirty connector for that ribbon cable, maybe? Again, many thanks.
+Films4Good Gary Ribbon cables is my first thought for the back/forth disk hunting. That or a dirty optical sensor. Usually it is the ribbon cable though. They develop small intermittent breaks just due to the flexing back and forth every time you open/close the drawer.
@@12voltvids Hello Thank you for this post. I disconnected several of the ribbon cables in order to access the RCA jacks (pins had broken off and I was able to extract them) however when I pit the CD player back together it is not responding normally. I may have incorrectly reconnected the ribbon cables. Do you have a tip on how to correctly align them to the connector? Is there a "key" or a way to identify pin1? Does it go on the left, or right? I subscribed😻
Gordon ....I have a 5 disc sony changer..The problem is that it does not read the cd nor dvd. It loads and just spins. All other things seem t work wel....Is it the laser eye dirty or more?
There is a receiver disc that pushes the CD up to engage, it has a rim of black adhesive that is worn from use and causing my CDs to pause or not engage at all. I'm sure there is a very specific tac to the adhesive so I don't want to replace with an inferior product. Where do I get that adhesive? Thx! (Sony, 5disk
Hi Dave, would this also work for the Sony model HCD-D590 ? It is very similar, but instead of the tray popping out, you press the a button to open the lid. And it spins 5 discs.

The tray is good, the panel functions respond to commands but it simply doesn't recognize the disc. I cleaned the lens. Doesn't help. Any ideas? Thanks and happy Holidays.
I have a CDP-C245 Sony unit. Haven't used in a long time and decided to reactivate it. Every thing seems to work fine trays works, etc. However when I hit play it takes the disc and starts to play track 1and music comes out of the speakers. However it goes for appx. 15 seconds into the track and then restarts the playing of track 1. It won't go to track 2. Any suggestions?
I have a Sony cdp-c365. Draw opens, tray rotates fine with no cds loaded. Once you load a CD, the CD player turns itself off and won’t turn back on, except at random times. Have you experienced this problem? Thanks, Mil
Can the ribbon cable be identified by markings on the cable itself? Assuming it is bad, how would one go about sourcing a replacement, if one is even available?

I have tried different discs. What is the likely cause? If it is not an easy fix, I wiill be selling it on eBay for parts within the next week but I would rather fix it!
Yay, I managed to fix mine from this video, as it was a dirty contact switch. Saves it going to landfill. Any fixes for the jog dial for track up and down on some models, which seems to be a common fault too, aprt from having to buy a new dial?.
I have a 5 disc player CDP-C331 model....I dont remember how long I have had it but it has been a long time, it was working fine until I had to place my things in storage in 2019, for almost a year. The player was wrapped in a bath towel and placed inside of a bedroom dresser drawer and the dresser was then placed in storage. It's been out of storage for 2 years now, plugged in but never turned on or used until today. The tray will not open, it does not rotate, I cannot even manually pull it out, so I opened the top. The item you call, optical chassis, appears to be in a closed state/up and its bouncing very slightly up/down like a heart beat, it stays up/closed, never goes down.... Does this mean the tray is out of alignment? There are no disc in the unit...

Excellent evaluation of the changer mechanism, very well done. Unfortunate that the most common problem is not addressed: disc read error.
Obviously this one did not have that problem to address which is generally 1 of 2 things. Bad optical pickup or bad spindle motor.

It was still a great video and I'll probably watch it a few more times and try some more. Thanks for the details!✌️
I did notice the platter motor was continuously on but not rotating the cog. Additionally the platter alignment was around 5mm off notnallowing the disks to be dropped into alignment or be picked up.
Anyhow thx again, bigg upps!🎉🎉
Thank you. You have helped me fix cdp-ce315. Now it's working perfectly. Awesome video with detailed instructions :)
Your video was informative and helpful. It enabled me to repair my CD player. THANK YOU
This video has helped me to fix the tray alignment.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks, never would have gotten it fixed based on other videos. Took cleaning the encoder switch to fix my issues with misloaded CDs
i have a technics 5-disc. it's very similar, internally, so this was a good video to give me some more troubleshooting ideas. thanks for sharing.
Sir giving new life to sony system only legends love this systems Love from India
Awesome video! Was able to tear my CDP-CE245 down entirely to clean up that encoder switch, which has given me some intermittent trouble. Was also able to align the whole tray mechanism.
Excellent video. I bought a used CDP-C235 that was DOA, but I fixed it thanks to this video!
HEY ! MAN THANKS, A LOT ! JUST got one the SONY 5 DISC BUT it must had been DROP but any way a MECHANIC BY TRADE, OPENED it UP it some how got out of aline ment ? but with your help got everything back on track ! MAN ! I was hopping MAD ! waiting for weeks then can't even hear my cds THANKS, A LOT again KEEP THE GREAT WORK UP! Mick
Fixed an already refurbished free cd player with this. Thanks a ton!!
Very helpful, I was able to fix my e275 model thanks the guidance in this video.
These players are very good and wasn't very expensive, after 20 years still working good, by the way CD's are the best way to keep your music for years and years and with a good Audio System you can enjoy beautiful and warm sound.
22:19 That gear is for what? It came out from my CD Player but the CD Player is working fine. Any advice, please. Thanks
Brilliant! Very informative! Love the disk exchange option on that model!
I need a new power cord with the module attachment on the side that connects to the unit. Do you have them and can I buy one?
3 years and no reply----yeah, this guy's a big help....!
Realigning fixed my problem, thanks and Merry Christmas!
Thanks! I cleaned the encoder (18:50) on my CDP-350 and it works again. It was so dirty when I pulled it apart that I thought the contacts were brass.
The issue I'm having is that forward facing silver pin on the optical chassis does not align properly with the slots associated with each disk holder on the
carousel.
Lol
Thanks again for the professional/detailed instructions. :)
Nice.
Had a little trouble aligning the carousel with the gears. It's more specific than you indicated.
Sounds like a weak laser to me.
Sır,I need the volt and ampere value of the transformer of the cdp-c661 model cd player, can you please answer?
No because I don't know.
Hi 12volt! Excellent diagnostic video on Sony carousel CD changers.
I have a Sony 2000
CDP-CE375
Issue: Does not reocgnize presence of CDs in trays #2, recognizes them most of the time in #3-5 but does read them in tray #1. If a CD is also in tray 2, the player pauses, for 4-6 sec., then moves onto the next tray, and so on in search of a disc.
This doesn't make sense, since there is only one laser-sled
assembly, and the carousel just rotates until the requested
disc is over that assembly.
Any ideas?
Hi have a Sony CDP CE315 that has just gone completely dead. Plug fuse is fine. Are there any common problems that cause this. Thanks for any help.
Thanks for this video....my old Sony 415 works great again. Found a filthy encoder...Q tip and a little deoxit did the trick!
9 years late to the show but still a fantastic video. You explain your work very easily and understandably. I got a Sony SCD-2000ES that keeps saying " Reading " but doesn't play.
I picked up a Sony disc player at Goodwill for $5, it's in good condition but maybe I'll do some PM on it. Thx for the excellent video.
Hey 12voltvids awesome video. Just a question, I have the CDP-C545 and it looks like my disc sensor failed because I'm not seeing the purple light that you have when it's on. Does that mean I have to replace that board or is their a simple fix to it?
thank you for the info--i would like to know if ther is a "simple " fix--for my 5 disc pasonic--that reads and play's my cd's--but only says--"no disc"--when i try and use the dvd--if you know how to fix this i would love to see how to fix my old unit--thank you--steve--
Awesome! Someone just gave me a beautiful clean higher end Sony 5disc CD player, the cdp-c615, it's powers up, the tray opens, but doesn't close on it's own, and doesn't play, it appears to have some of these issues you went over, gonna giv'er a shot! I knew someone out there made a video such as yours on youtube, I hope it helps! Thanks alot for making this vid!
Complete and detailed repair guide, thanks
Any tips got a Sony CDP-CA70ES CD Changer the disc struggles to read sometimes I can eject then back in again and it will read normal?
I got a used Wave Acoustic CD-3000. The radio works great. The CD player spins the CD and the display shows it started but does not begin to play. There is a soft clicking sound and will not play.
There are no disc in the unit...
i have the CDP515 model. and i have one unknown part which i found inside my sony. and i can not find the right place from where this part can be installed and from where he is falled.
please can you video your pickup unit? maybe i can see the right place to install my unknown part... but i think it is from somewhere in pickup assembly
I have a "Sony HCD-GX450 compact disc deck receiver" and replaced the two belts the other day. My screwdriver touched the PCB on the open side and I heard it arc and now I have no power. The red light on the center dial works as does the standby light. That's it, no display. I can open and close the cd and change it from 1 to 2 to 3 . What did I do? How can I ts it and repair it? TIA
Excellent! Very detailed explanation.
Great video, I have a 5 disc changer and I am having an issue. I disc plays good but when I want to get the disc back it wont release it back on the tray. I stop to disc completely and I have to keep changing the disc tray until It comes out for some reason. I plan to open it but any advise? I would appreciate it, thanks.
