- This week the brand new Pantheon: Rhulk Indomitable came out, and alongside it the Arc Surge modifier, which naturally for the Destiny 2 community has brough their attention to a very particular weapon of significant notoriety, THUNDERLORD.

After having heard rumors of it's potential to "comfortably 2 phase" the final boss Rhulk, I had to get my friends together and put this theory to the test. We only decided to use Thunderlord on a select few of the bosses because for ones like Caretaker, Atraks and maybe Oryx the gun is very much not the right weapon to use due to the nature of the encounters themselves, Caretaker is major burst at threshold, Atraks is major burst, and I guess it could work for Oryx but we already have Whisper of the Worm for that. To be fair, the gun did perform reasonably well in Golgoroth as we secured a 5 bubble kill and on Explicator it only took us a handful of tries to get the 2 phase, though do bear in mind that a large reason for that is also properly timing our burst supers on threshold. Rhulk was the final test and honestly the biggest thing stopping this thing from 2 Phasing consistently is just the clone copy. If it was just Rhulk on his own, Thunderlord would 2 phase every time without question, which caused us to take quite a few tries to get the 2 phase clip. I can confirm after my team wanted to run thunderlord that i was doing nearly three times their damage on a thundercrash titan with izanagi and a explosive light gl also i constantly fucked up my swap time/reload of izi and our div would constantly go down on the boss so i could have done even better dps

We got a comfortable 2 phase on Rhulk this week after just trying it out for the meme. Makes the damage phase super simple despite people's sentiment on it.
It's literally a solid dps gun with div and everybody having arc surge mod and catalyst

I was adamant that we were NOT using thunderlord on rhulk. But something always went wrong with rockets and we ended up doing over half his health in 1 phase with 5 tlords

Im a optimiser so ef anyone uses rockets i use gallahorn or apex if someone else will but i hate explosive most of my deaths in exotic missions, dungeons and raids are becuase the second i shoot some object spontaneously enters the barrel of my rocket sometimes its even a orb i created (also the reason i stopped fully speedrunning seraph shield as every time ive done a brig mission with a rocket ive died twice to the face plate becoming a homing shield crossmapping me, also it took 3 tries to do the new outbreak because i kept dying the same way rocket meets brig plate.) So i always want to use something else and ive still never been able to convince someone to do a boss fight with no explosives (every ron run i try to get T-Lord as i keep shooting his weapon as he smacks me)
Tbf, bait and switch is kinda total ass. If you miss a single shot of kinetic or energy, you lost more damage than you would have gained over any other damage perk. Unless you are a high tier raider or have a crit spot the size of a planet, theres no real need to try and use it over explosive light or the like.
I guess his cross hair just gravitates to some kind of special ghost. Might be Casper.

Dev Insight today mentioned that Machine Guns were getting a universal 7% damage buff next season, while legendary rockets were getting left behind with no real option for their mod slots (effectively a 7-8% damage nerf), making the disparity between the two about 15% compared to what they are now. Is a T.Lord, Grand Overture, Xeno meta headed our way?
The mods are getting removed, but the dmg will be adapted.

@@thegymteachersgrandmaFrom my understanding Rockets and GL’s were excluded in the write-up. Linears, Glaives, and Snipers were notable picks from the “increased base PvE damage vs. all combatants”, but Rockets and GL’s are not included.
Further evidence to support this is the way Pulses are mentioned. The 1.2 and 1.15 modifiers mentioned in the base PvE damage increase list and red-bar list (38% increase total) does not include the damage that Spec mods previously added.

Machine guns would need like 40-50% buff probably even more to mimic a fraction of rockets and gls. They are trash, stop using them.
Celestial is great on Rhulk IF you have Divinity bubble to shoot at. For the tormentors, Div is again useful and they get absolutely oblitereted by snipers like Supremacy and Succession.

We also used thunderlord to two phase rhulk, it was pretty easy for us, just one div, damage supers and 5 thundies.

General Pantheon question - when you select the Rhulk Indomitable playlist, does it make all the encounters -15 power, or does it stay at -5 for the initial 4 encounters, change to -10 on Oryx, and -15 on Rhulk?

If you super at the start of DPS on Rhulk with thunderlord you get a second super before the end of damage phase = easy 2 phase for us with 2 wells
For anyone wondering, thunderlord is actually how my team cleared Rhulk in 2 phases this week paired with celestials and t-crashes
But it's cooler to have the same take as everyone else!!!

I spent 12 hours doing various lfg teams for rhulk encounter, all of which said to do thunderlord for dps, only 2 did we complete the enc, both of which was not platinum time.
My first team to try legend of Acrius I did not have Arcius so I switched from titan to cenotaph warlock, then did div during dps while herding shadow rhulk.
On our second attempt we got rhulk down to the C in disciple, then they did final stand without any div(I died from underestimating the distance from the shadow), we finished with 56 seconds left of platinum time. I call it a success. Legend of Acrius is definitely the way to go this week

How about grand overture? You can prock radient with an aggresive sniper ( 3 in mag ) with just one shot.
The potential damage is there, but Rhulk's skinny ass will have you hitting about 50% of your built-up rockets unless you're right in his face (exactly where you DON'T want to be). Also can't build up stacks on the boss himself, since the shots just bounce away, unlike against caretaker.

The thunderlord strat got my team #39 for rhulk this week. We only used it on the rhulk encounter but it is super viable and very free. If rhulk didn't glitch on our first run we probably wouldv'e got top 20!
The bonus is how much super energy it generates. See if u can pump out two supers per damage phase. Might have to sacrifice a guardian for marksman 3 shot hunter

Can confirm thunderlord is very easy to kill Rhulk, you don't have to sweat about swapping every time, just maintain your fire button and you have free damage. I did more than half the HP of Rhulk with this machine gun.
One advice after you've thundercrashed him swap to actium war rig for non stop firing.
2 phased rhulk with thunder and 3 wells. It was really close though. We died right as the boss did.
I’m annoyed at the LFGs I have gotten into. They are all using Arc Heavy GLs or Arc Heavy Rockets, yet Wrathweaver is perfect for this week’s damage, as it gives you a 25 precent damage buff to all Stasis damage for the duration of Winters Wrath, and a bit after it. Furthermore, putting down a frostpulse rift will grant you a times two! Meaning you really only need one stasis surge, and your other surges can focus on your secondary or primary depending on which is going to be the main source of damage after the heavy.
The one good thing about tlord is that it charges your super very fast, so you can do two tcrashes per fase
You know, i was joking that thunderlord might be usable because of arc surge, i see that it might actually be true to an extant
it works best to refund super. it's clearly very slow on dmg buildup. but for what works best for us are at least 2x SES GG hunters to guarantee everyone being able to do 2x supers in 1 dps phase
Thunderlord is fine with the supers for Rhulk. Golgoroth also works out fine. I wouldn't use it on any other boss though. Whole team at least needs a brain cell and a half for this weeks Pantheon
I've always enjoyed TLord especially for how damn fast you can get a super back on a boss when you lat on the trigger.
Me and my team used it on Rhulk, we lost to the timer by 2 seconds but it still counted thankfully 😭
I've been rocking star eaters, gathering storm and thunderlord since the first Pantheon for dmg and I've been highest in damage almost every time......except if they're using Izanagi's.....
We had issues with it… Had to 3 phase but still got plat… Hopefully this weekend will be better
I’m so confused I thought thunderlord is a good dps weapon? I only ever ran it for nezzy cuz the guy who taught me said it was the play. But I haven’t used it since
Thunderlord is good if its arc surge and a pretty long dps phase. It isn't really good at dishing out alot of damage quickly (burst dps) like GLs but where it shines is total damage/sustained dps. It's also really safe and easy to use, no need to worry about swapping weapons, shooting a teammate in the back of the head or missing shots, just hold the trigger.
About the nezarec thing tlord was bugged back then, it was doing double damage lightning strikes on div bubbles, that's been patched
Why use thunder crash instead of pyros? Even tho ignitions don’t stack the pure amount of scorch ticks happening should make up for it in the end even with out roaring flames being on

With the surge Thunder Lord is very viable for Rhulk. There is no chance of accidentally killing yourself and the lack of easily obtainable high burst arc/stasis heavies make the consistent damage of Thunder Lord great. The LFG group I ran with were all damage supers and once people didn’t get kicked during damage we easily two phased the boss. It is usually a burger weapon but like with flawless runs Thunder Lord can be a good choice.
Can you make a video on Final Warning? If it's strand surge next week, then that could be a great option to proc shot caller and bait and switch on a cataphract

We killed golgoroth and rhulk with it, Thunderlord dps and total dmg so good that we did 2/3 dmg at rhulk with 2 tcrash only

I joined a Pantheon LFG, saw that everyone was using Thunderlord on Caretaker week 2, then left.
My team 2 phased Rhulk with Thunderlord, the thing that makes it good is how quickly damaging with all those individual bullets/lightning strikes refills your super, you can get two damage supers off in a single phase which is really useful
What makes TLord good for Rhulk is being able to strafe around without ADS’ing and avoiding the rhulks. Also, if you pop super at beginning of damage phase, you can usually get a second celestial off before damage phase ends because of damage being tied to super now…
People when discussing DPS rotations: “use a damage super then swap to lucky pants and change go through your rotations”
People when talking about thunderlord DPS: “it isn’t the gun. It has to be helped by supers”
The difference is the other options can do the same thing without supers and still kill the boss in an acceptable amount of phases. TLORD can’t because it’s one of the worst dps weapons in the game.

@@th9986 It's not one of the worst DPS options in the game. It's just the ultimate lazy weapon. Which if you can't hit 1.5m a phase with a meta weapon then you should prob put yourself on TLord. Meta options are pumping out 2.5+ mil on Rhulk each phase. People are just turbo garbage at DPS.
Discussing a rotation is different because that’s the purpose of a “rotation” Its to use a variety of different sources of damage. It’s not exactly a fair comparison
When people compare Thunderlord to other weapons most do not compare it to rotations, they compare it to other singular weapons. Since anybody who is choosing to use Thunderlord clearly isn’t trying to do a rotation in the first place.

Why palmyra b? I thought it did like 25% less damage just by default because of the frame no? Why not just a hothead or cold comfort?
Reserve bump made precisions have more total damage, if you can get all your rockets out it’s higher total + harder to whiff a rocket

Crux Termination over cold comfort in my opinion yes you got bait and switch but arc surge with clown cartridge and explosive light with surge mods is doing more damage
Cold comfort has stasis surge aswell. Bait and switch buffs gally wolfpacks whereas explosive light doesn’t. If i had one that’s what i would be using for sure

Also got Platinum Two Phase Rhulk with an LFG team, only took 3 attempts (~25 minutes). It does feel wrong to be using Thunderlord though. (1 Trcash, 2 wells, 3 GG Hunters).
We got an EASY 2 phase with 5 thunderlords a div + 2 Tcrashes, 2 wells, and a golden gun. It’s a good gun.
what are next weeks surges?
fully convinced that nobody here has heard of grand overture. psa: it's arguably the highest burst damage you can do this week without cold comfort with ballidorse and gjally. please for the love of god if you've been playing the game for more than 5 days and you plan on joining an lfg run, do not use thunderlord. grand overture is perfectly fine. 3m+ on every boss except atraks, over 6m on caretaker in 2 floors, and absolutely no swaps or ammo generation required.
please just use cold comfort, bump in the night or wendigo

pls do not use this, i was out damaging thunderlord with a bipod crux termination IV (without gally) and malfeasence on lucky pants, if u are a titan or warlock just use izanagi.

Thunderlord has to ramp up and also since it’s a constant stream of damage instead of a burst, counting down isn’t as necessary. Missing 5-10 MG shots isn’t the same as missing a whole rocket

Missed shots are less crippling to overall damage.
High reserves.
Super comes back quickly. Good for chaining thunder crashes
Easily obtainable.... BUT..
Cons:
Slow ass reload (Titans will be on Curiass for super damage).
Poor burst DPS.
Requires Arc Surge
Requires Divinity since people who can't aim with rockets or GLs need a giant ball to target.
BUT it requires the Catalyst to even do anything (good luck RNG)
The many reason Thunderlord runs fail is because people underestimate how important the catalyst is. And it is completely RnG.
So Thunderlord runs are actually not recommended. And if you already have the Tlord catalyst, chances are you already have other god roll stuff.

Machine guns could use help but hand cannons really don't need buffs currently

They’re add clear weapons the reload is almost never a factor in normal gameplay and when it is perks like reconstruction, auto loading are best in slot with reload perks that make the reload almost max already coming in second.

In all actuality, Thunderlord is the definition of a 6/10. Maybe a 7. Easy to use dps, does enough damage so that anyone using it is basically always contributing to damage (just not near the top), great ammo economy, and on top of that, it boasts great benefits outside dps for add-dense content, legend/master lost sectors and story missions, and a great source of Overload to fill out your Champion loadout. It's versatile, it's reliable, it's easy, it's fun, it just isn't meta. No need to truly argue. Just don't overhype it or overbash it, and you're good in my book.

No. Using standard DPS rotations up until Rhulk is significantly easier than Thunderlord. Had way more success with literally any other weapon.
