- I knew that the Mezco One:12 Collective Popeye was one of my big wants this year and it absolutely doesn't disappoint. Everything I could want from a classic cartoon blasted into real life in an awesome if not slightly creepy way.

My dad was a sailor in WWII, and he had a Popeye tatoo on the inside of his right forearm (and a mermaid on his left.) So I always had a bit of a soft spot for Popeye. So, this is a must have for me.
Oh man, that's a lot of added sentimental value to an already awesome figure.

I always did like Popeye but never to the point of needing an action figure... Until now... I NEED that thing!
Seeing how badass he translates in a semi-realistic aesthetic, it begs the question of why there aren't MORE Popeye figures?

The forearms are meant to come off. It's the only way to get the shirt off, which they clearly wanted us to be able to do.
The magnet hats are brilliant give whoever thought of that arise.
Popeye seriously has to be one of the BEST figures of the year!! Love it so much!!

I noticed you mentioned Space Ghost at the end. I think they already made a Space Ghost although I don't really know the character so maybe you knew that already and were just asking to make other characters from the license or something.
There are like 100 comments and someone probably mentioned it but Mezco did two versions of Space Ghost. I have the glow in the dark version and it's awesome (and affordable). Highly recommend you pick it up.
I was commenting on one of the Mezco facebook groups the other day that we need a pulp sub-line of figures for the following:

Ha, funny thing is, we've talked about the Space Ghost and the EE GITD version several times before. I still never got one, I guess that's why I forgot.

I'm not super fond of Popeye, but I was intigued by this figure, when the photos came out. You know, why Popeye, Mezco? Man did the idea grow on me though.
Got mine the other day, but my wife is making me wait until Christmas to open it. 😒

Now, Robo, you must understand I am obsessed with Scooby-Doo way too much for a 20 year old dude and have never thought of a Mezco rendition of the characters. Now, I would never EVER actually do this, but I would roundhouse kick an entire classroom of 4th graders to get a Mezco Scooby-Doo line. Could you imagine not only the gang, but some villains too? Imagine the likes of the Black Knight Ghost, Redbeard the Pirate, Captain Cutler's Ghost, the Space Kook, or even my ultimate request: Ben Ravencroft.

I love the Popeye film. Got an anchor tattooed on my hand partially for it. I have seen enough toy reviews to say this is the best I've seen. Nice work. I can't wait to track this guy down.

That figure is simply INCREDIBLE! Such attention to detail. Fantastic sculpt. And loads of accessories! Only thing about it is that it's so realistic, yet cartoony at the same time. I think it would just feel hard to place in a collection. Definitely need a Bluto to go with him.
And big bonus points for all the references to the movie. Really loved that, but I'll have to watch it again today to see how it holds up! Great review!

I am so happy to see this review! This has been my most anticipated 1/12 figure since preorder! I’ve got two coming (whenever BBTS finally gets him). I would die if Mezco would continue with herculoids, bird man, the rest of the pop eye cast! At least a bluto 🙏 oh dude, thundarr would be epic!!!

I love this. Grew up watching Popeye and alot of cartoons back in the 70s 80s and that by far is spectacular. Btw your impression of Popeye laughing was hilarious 😆 keep up the reviews
Hey robo just to let you know on the center of his back there is actually a tattoo which I didn't expect Mezco to put!
Robo - You sir convinced me that I need this. The fact that he is Navy & comes with the traditional pea coat and skull cap really gets me! Do I really need an old school cartoon line ( i.e. Spaceghost)
This figure is a must have if you ever watched Popeye growing up... ima hunt this figure down! Too too! ⚓️
They should have accessories like a watch, bracelet, or a bandana for the wrist areas where the connection seam is. It makes it look a little funky. Other than that this figure is badass.

I think this is my fig of the year. So good. I agree with everything you said, Herculoids, Scooby Doo, Blue Falcon. Their Space Ghost is really good too (my first Mezco, one that got me hooked), with a ton of laser blasts.
I didn't expect it, but I agree, this slips into at least my top 5 for the year.

It looks soooo good. I can't wait for mine to be delivered, plus it's my first Mezco, along with Netflix Punisher, Daredevil and Clown Prince Joker, all on pre-order too!
Other than being in the Cadets my early teens. Wearing the Navy Uniform, The clothing seems to be 100% accurate. The seem across chest is your standard Navy / Coast Guard Uniform. All the buttons on the pants are exactly like the uniform supposed to be.
Look up Navy / Coast Guard photos from 1930s you'll appreciate all the research his creator did.
Something I have non-stop been thinking about since I started playing red dead 2 is a mezco Arthur and john, they would work so well in the mezco style I feel.

Okay, after seeing it, I do really want it. Still wish it was Robin Williams version, but I'm actually thinking of sculpting a Robin Williams Popeye head for this one. A lot of the accessories were used in the movie, like the peacoat and the stocking hat, the bag. It looks almost like they wanted to do Robin Williams but couldn't get likeness rights, ha. I don't know the best thing for making a head (super sculpey and acrylic paint?), but yeah, I really wanna try when I finally find another job. I'm considerably behind on your videos because I've been on a job hunt for months since getting laid off, so I haven't been able to get any new plastic! Fingers crossed this month, because I'm getting desperate, ha.
He's large is the only line I remember from the song Oliveoil sings....and we know what she was referring to!
I MUST AND WILL HAVE THIS!!!! My god that is one of the coolest figures I have ever seen and I have seen them all. I also just love Popeye. Awesome cartoon and characters. The price is crazy but this is one exception I will make.
Yeah, $80 is harder to swallow with all the other figure lines out there, but this is so good I don't mind the price as much.
Mezco missed the chance to give him a pipe with spinach instead of smoke. I remember Popeye doing that thing where he, like, ate the spinach through the pipe lol.
Haha, that and when he would flip it over and use the pipe like a cutting torch to open the can.
popeye was modeled on a real person so someone used to look like that and was sailor in the creator's home town

They glue the cover wraping it with the box. So they can layers the plastic sheet between.
I remember during childhood, i didnt want to eat vegetables, but when i watched popeye, i was inspired to eat some. He's a good model for all of us. ☺👍

Every time I see Popeye I think of a skit I seen on Family Guy or Robot Chicken. Popeye goes to a doctor and the doc tells him "Your legally blind and those aren't forearm muscles. Those are tumors." Something like that. It cracks me up every time and forever changed how I see Popeye lol.
Popeye did play many a times in our younger days Robo. Looney tunes, Scooby Doo, Woody wood pecker, hell Chilly Willy hahahaha. I think we need a chilly willy.

I'm having a little Fomo sering the Popeye reviews. Mezco makes such fun stuff. The arms are meant to pop off at the elbow for putting on the jacket or taking off the shirt.
Herculoids, Thundarr, etc. After the Space Ghost, i want all the DC-HannaBarbera super heroes and characters. Thundarr first if I had to chose. Those 3 would be easier and less expensive. Herculoids would be $X00

Popeye has what is called slip-jaw. It happens from loosing teeth. He isn't actually meant to have teeth.

Ooh I might need this for my Navy shelf and if you don't know robo his design is based on the stereotypical boatswain mate of the early US Navy around the early 1800's

Nice review and figure love popeye, as a kid, one of my favorite cartoons. If i where you! I wouldnt force or put to much force, on the elbow joints! You could easely could break the joint pegs. It happened to me with one of my other figure.

Hi Robo, There already is a Space Ghost made by Mezco One:12 and it's dope. There's a regular one and a exclusive one that glows in the dark. A herculoids or Scooby Doo figures from Mezco would be great. I'd love to see a Birdman or Blue Falcon with Dynomutt from them too, and maybe even Johnny Quest.
Yeah, I forget about Space Ghost because I've never been able to snag one for a good price. Out of sight, out of mind...

Holy shit, I love this figure! But then again... I'm old, watched Popeye cartoons when I was a kid.
I think it makes perfect sense for Popeye to be walking around with a severed head in his bag...
He has a tattoo just under the lower neck / back area. I think the arms are removable so you take the shirt off if you want to show off the tattoo.

This is one of the only things that me and my grandad got along over cause he has bad knees he stays in the house a lot and this is one of the things I used to watch with him that and robocop
