🎥 About this video - I am in San Antonio Texas and was invited by the Scottish Society of San Antonio to visit the Alamo, where we were met with a huge surprise - first that San Antonio bagpiper David Sutherland would pipe us in to the Alamo, and second the Viscount Dunrossil, Andrew Morrison presented my wife and I with an honorary citizenship to the city of San Antonio, signed by Mayor Ron Nirenberg. I was fascinated to learn of the Scottish ancestry of many of the folks who live in San Antonio, and that many who fought at The Alamo were either Scottish or from Scottish ancestry. Located in the city of San Antonio, the Alamo was the site of a major battle in the Texas Revolution and is one of the most famous historical sites in the United States. Today, the Alamo is a popular tourist destination, and it is also an important symbol of Texas history.

The talk with Dunrossil... my heart just purely broke. You two painted the picture well.... all the Highland clansmen (and women) swept away across the ocean. Northern Scotland emptied of it's people. It's a familiar story, but then the descendants in a foreign land holding Scotland close to their hearts and memories. Meanwhile, back home, Scotland moves on without them. I don't know.. there's some old, old heartache in that.
P.S. Congrats, again, on your adoption by San Antonio. Very sweet and kind of them. You two are lovely people. Texans know quality when they see it!
I've met Dunrossil! Nice guy.
A really cool discussion with the Viscount about how we celebrate culture here in the US. A lot of our families like to hold on to traditions and culture handed down from our European ancestors, but a lot of Europeans don't quite get why or accept us as being of their culture. The truth is, America is still relatively young and we still have so much influence from our ancestral countries even though we are physically removed from the lands where it stems from.
The fascinating thing for me is people are often celebrating a culture than no longer exists where they came from. Or not exactly that they don’t exist, but they certainly evolve
@@shaunvlog A very interesting aspect! There’s definitely a sort of “fork in the road” that was moving across the pond.
From one Texan to another, Welcome Shaun! Thats a great honor!
Indeed :D
It's not just San Antonio Texas that loves you both, Americans in all the States love you. Washington State 💗 you both.
I must agree.
Hi Shaun, I was born and raised in SA 62 years now. Always been proud of my city, but when y'all were made Honorary Citizens, I now know what's it like to be proud for someone I've never met. Good work guys.
Nice 🤠congratulations! I’ve lived in San Antonio for 14 years and had no clue we have a Scottish society.
Check them out - seem like a lovely bunch of folks
In early April, there is a Scottish Highland Games and accompanying fair. It's a great weekend, held at the Helotes Fairgrounds. My husband was an amateur Games athlete for many years. He competed all over Texas, but the Games here in San Antonio were always the highlight of the year for us.
So awesome to be honored that way! Proud of you Shaun! 🏴 🇺🇲 Lots of love to you and Teka🤎🍂🎃
Thank you very much Jaimie 😊
We were on a visit to San Antonio doing the river walk. When leaving we thought we heard pipes. Following the sounds of the pipes we found ourselves at the door of the Alamo where a Scottish festival was in progress. That was a surprise.❤️
Scotland forever!
So proud that y'all are now San Antonians, like me. ♥️ 👩🏻🦳
Another Texan here. Congratulations on becoming a true Texan. Now, it's a part of your life forever and I'm sure it's in your heart. I hope that Houston gives you the same honor. It's true, once you've been here, you'll come back forever. You're a little hooked on Tex-Mex now aren't you? :) P.S. The hat looks good. I'm glad you got a Stetson. Well worth the money. You can tell them at a glance.
Twenty years ago when my brother was graduating from Air Force boot in Lackland AFB, I visited the Alamo, as I do every time I go into the city, and got to see the official Piper from Clan McGregor play the pipes, it was the first time a Piper from McGregor piped at the site since the battle. As a person of Scottish ancestry (McRae) and a sixth generation Texan I understood how significant that was. We are damn glad to have you brother.
On a a historical note My ancestor was trying to ride to the relief of the alamo But he and his friends got there too late but did end up participating in later battles as well as The battle of san jacinto.
Your ancestor is a hero. It's never to late to say thank you for your ancestor's service because this is Texas. The Scotts are the only ones whose spirit is like Americans, Fearless!
@@ibosquez5238 I say that all the time in fact my great great grandfather was a texas ranger, who was also part of the texas underground Railroad.
@@alaneskew2664
Wow, my dad was a WWII vet stationed in Italy, which he loved. Ancestors have done a lot in order for us to be here.
@@ibosquez5238 I miss my grandfathers very much. Both USAAF mechanics.
@@dubuyajay9964
I miss dad very much.
Congratulations on your new citizenship. San Antonio is a must if you are visiting Texas.
The generosity of Americans never fail to amaze me. It warms my heart to see how you were welcomed and honored by the people of Texas. And by the way, you look great Shaun in your new hat and tie. 🤑
Congratulations from one Texan to another. Welcome to Tejas.
"Texas means friends...". 🤠🎼🎵🎶
I am with Clan McFarlane. In N.C , we made our u.s debut around 1760. I was raised in the same parcel of land granted by the 🤴 and 👸. Very proud of my Scottish ancestry. It remains to be a bucket list trip.
Born and raised in Texas, and though I've long been away, it is still near and dear to my heart.
Love it!
The cowboy hat and bolo tie look awesome on you!
Yes, it all matches!
What awesome memories.
It’s so hard to explain to non-Americans how or why we Americans hold onto our ancestry and heritage from other countries. It’s just something to be proud of and I enjoy seeing others share and be proud of their heritage, too.

Congrats to the Scottish society who made this possible
You deserve this honor. Well done.
Let us know when you can return so we can go horseback riding and take a ranch tour...maybe go to a country dance as well! We'll be in Edinburgh next year for our Gathering. Hope to see you and Teka!
On a somber note, our condolences for the loss of the Queen.
Fascinating connections to the Alamo. Thanks for sharing
This was so cool! Congrats to both you and your wife on this honor!
Thank you Cathy
Hope you enjoyed your Texas brisket. Here is Maryland, if I want it done right, I have to do it myself. Now, all my friends want Texas brisket.
David Sutherland taught the pipes to me 30 years ago and I was a member of the SA Pipes and Drums way back when. Then I worked with Andrew Morrison from 2002. I would have been there to meet you if I had not already had plans for my husbamd's birthday that very day! It's so cool to see you in San Antonio!
As a fellow Morrison of Texas and grand son of a Scottish immigrant I welcome you as a fellow Scot and Texan. You are one of us now so y'all better start saying y'all
Morrison from Colorado here!
Congratulations Shaun on that Honorary award. Very nice👍👍
It was great to meet you both the day you came. I wish we all could have more time with y'all. I was so late getting to the meet n greet because I missed the bus and had to wait for the next one. I was so happy to see y'all. I never thought y'all would come to San Antonio.
thank you very much for making it out to meet us :)
I am a citizen of San Antonio with Scottish descent. I love San Antonio because of the diversity and everyone embraces their culture and history, while sharing this with each other. Welcome!
I also enjoyed Scotland ♥️
I’m from Texas and just found out through DNA testing I’m half Scottish! Honestly it makes a lot of sense that Highlanders contributed to the spirit of Texas and I’d love to explore that more. I’ve been learning a lot from you and I’m so glad y’all were treated well on your visit. The hat & bolo look great! Very cool! Thanks for all you do 😊
Half? You didn't just ask one of your parents?
When I was a little girl we lived out in the country. We, along with all the other kids were allowed to run around anywhere and everywhere. One of the fathers called his kids back home by playing his bagpipe.. Well my parents thought that a great idea, and told us we had to head home when the bagpipe was played. Whenever I hear a bagpipe, it brings back all those wonderful memories from my childhood.
Too cool! I'm a Texan and used to live in an apartment complex 15 years ago that had around 5 acres in the back with a large pond and the patio of my apartment faced there. . On morning, I woke up to the sound of bagpipes. I walked out on the patio and there was a man playing bagpipes by the pond. After he was done and started to walk back to the complex, I stopped him to say that his playing was lovely. His eyes lit up and said I was the first person there that said so.

Scottish people are so cool 😎
What a cool memory! Thanks for sharing. 🫖
I think we look at our heritage from Scotland as people who were basically thrown out by the British. Much the same way we look at the American Revolution. You see Scotland through a modern lens as you should. We see it through a historical lens.
Same with us German-Czechs from Hill Country and Colorado County. It's a shame our custom old tongues are dying out. :(
Like the Stetson, really looks good on you! San Antonio's river walk was hopefully cooler for you and Teka, it certainly is lovely. Congratulations on being a welcome member, and honorary citizens, you should frame it when you get back home. Thanks for the update, have a great time!
What an unbelievable day you had. It's a big deal to be recognized by the mayor.
Hi Shaun! Great to see you Again! I missen your vlogs, congratulations with this ! A great honour indeed!
Thank you very much Kirsty!!
Looks like you had a lot of fun. May is hot and humid.. glad you preservered.
I knew that the folks in San Antonio would take care of you and your wife!!! Just speaking from experience!
Great video Shaun. I didn't know there was a piper in the Battle of the Alamo, nor did I know about the stone from Scotland. Congrats about the citizenship.
How wonderful! There are many Scottish Societies here. We are proud of all of immigrants from old here. 👏 ✌️
I'm still sore i missed your visit here, i would have been thrilled to meet you ... glad you enjoyed your visit
Me too. :(
REMEMBER THE ALAMO!! Your cowboy hat, matches your clothing perfectly! You’re not only an honorary citizen of San Antonio, but you look like a true son of Texas!
The Alamo fight was to try to keep slavery, it's disguising that anyone would want to remember it.
Our family came to Texas from Georgia in 1840, and we been having a blast every sense. Remember the Alamo !!
Hi Shaun! I’ve been enjoying all your trips in the USA, and now you are I. San Antoinia at the Alamo with fellow scots❣️ enjoy and thanks for all the videos you provide to us vlog watchers. Really neat!
BTW, there used to be a guard at the front door to tell the men to remove their hats because it's a shrine to the people who fell during the battle of the Alamo, but no one told you and you didn't know. I understand that tho. 🤠
I also remember that there was a No Photography policy.
What a great video Shaun! (Hi Teka!) I really enjoyed watching the entire video, and learning how the people of the States feel regarding their ancestral roots in Scotland. I loved the explanation (and the facts) that there are many more people here in the US with ties to Scotland than there are in Scotland. We have over 30,000,000 people in the U.S. who have Scottish ancestry. Currently, there are less than 6,000,000 living Scots in Scotland. Let us be proud of where we came from, and what we have become. We continue to welcome anyone and everyone with a true dream to our land. I never knew about John McGregor, the piper at the Alamo! What a story. GREAT to see you both here and I know you were thrilled as well. We love you.
What a great history lesson from your points of view!! That those of us here are holding the "old" Scottish memories and ways. Kind of safe keeping until rediscovered and now shared. I would LOVE it if you looked into the "mountain people" of the Appalachians. There's a UA-cam video about archivists cataloging the very old mountain music
Reminds me of when Germans get shocked when they visit the Hill Country. LOL. XD
Another great video Shaun! Love from Maine ❤
That is awesome. I lived in San Antonio for 7 years while in the Air Force. I am glad you got to see the Alamo.
Shaun WOW! I got a tear in my eye. I'm happy for you brother.
Cheeers Alan 😊
I love the Alamo and the nearby River Walk. I am glad you came.
From Houston. There's a sense of friendship and connection with people from everywhere. (except maybe during rush hour traffic 🤣) Honestly, we just love people. Welcome; we're glad to have you.
I miss H Town. Had to move to San Antonio outskirts two years ago.
@@dubuyajay9964 That area has gotten very popular. It's a good spot. You know Houston...you can live in it and still be an hour from it.... ha!
Finally a new video👍🏻👍🏻 ♥️🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸♥️
I'm back!!
Congratulations to you both and welcome to the Lone Star State as honorary citizens. 🎉⭐️🤘🏼🧡
I’ve been watching your videos for years- this is one of my favorites. I’m glad y’all got to go to the Riverwalk, eat some Tex-Mex and visit the Alamo. Loved the history you and the Viscount talked about. (Im half Scottish and have ancestors that were sent to the Colonies by the English as punishment after Culloden. Clan Boyd) LOVE that y’all were made honorary citizens. That was so cool. ❤ from Texas
Thank you Andie 😊 I’ll be back
He should visit the other missions and cathedral too.
Congratulations and howdy! I’m glad you had a good time and survived the heat.
So glad to have you as an honorary Texan!
I lived in San Antonio in the early 1970's, and have great memories of the city. So it's really cool San Antonio welcomed and honored you. Hope you do get to revisit San Antonio again and again. Glad you got the Stetson the bolo tie and shirt. Really looks good on you.
Wow!....🌟💯 That is so very interesting that there is some Scottish history in Texas! I love learning, especially history! TY Shaun and Teka!
Shaun, whatever you paid for that Stetson - it was totally worth it! They make an incredible product that will last FOREVER! Not only does that honourary citizenship need to be framed - it might even need a "shadow box" that you could store momentos of your trip in with it. Heather xo
Congratulations Shaun! You deserve it. I just realized I had never heard your surname until now lol
Congratulations Shaun and Teka! Great honor 👏👏👏👏🥂🍾🥰
That was very cool! Congrats!
What a fun video! Thank you Shaun. 😀
Thank you Cynthia 😊
I've lived in Austin for a long time. San Antonio is wonderful. So full of history, and the River Walk is epic.
Love watching you enjoy our great country🎉
Congratulations brother Texan! Being a Texan is the best thing to be. And the best part is, you don’t have to be born here(although those of us who were are extremely proud that we were) to be a Texan. You don’t even have to live here. All you have to do is carry that Texas pride, spirit of Texas freedom, and the Texas spirit of friendship wherever you are and wherever you go.
Texans love their Scottish ancestry! I'm one myself. (McPherson and McNeely) Congratulations on becoming honorary Texans! I haven't had the opportunity to travel much; but I've been to Las Vegas and NYC, and SA is still my absolute favorite. There's a really great vibe down there. It's been way too long since I've been there. And I'm from Dallas!
Fond of my German-Czech ancestry. Some Cajun from East Texas as well.
It's wonderful to see how your channel has grown. But better to see you never forget the deep connection of love and devotion of America and Scotland.
Thanks brother appreciate it 🤘
Howdy Shaun and Teka its great to see your videos. Its wonderful to have you as fellow honorary Texans, welcome. I am a Texan down to the core , born and raised, as you travel through Texas and our cities you'll find that our fellow Texans are most giving, kind, and have hearts as big as Texas and we will do anything to make you comfortable and feel at home. Keep up the great video work.
Really enjoyed this vlog and also meeting y’all! Glad you had such a good experience here in SA! 💗🤠🏴 (Despite the heat 🥵)
Awesome vlog Shaun. I really like how you acknowledge the difference in Americans of Scottish ancestry and Scots from Scotland. I 100% agree most of highland/clan culture is here in America because our ancestors brought it here. My surname is Hay. We are clan Hay.
Love watching all of your adventures across America! All of the states are so different, from the climate to accents of the people who live there! Everyone has a story about where their ancestors came from and many people can trace their lineage way back. It makes for an interesting conversation to learn about the past from the people you meet as you are experiencing the present and making your own memories. It’s neat the way you meet up with your fans, and i hope you make a few lifelong friends as you guys go along❤️
As a native Texan I'm so glad when people like Shaun and Teka come to visit.
Congratulations to you both.🎉❤️😎
CONGRATULATIONS TEXAN !!!
I went down from Ft Hood TX to San Antonio some 30 years ago. My fondest memory was of the River Walk.
Our Highland Blood Lives Forever!💪💞💞💞🌟💯
WOW!! Andrew will be a big help to his momma when he gets all grown up. LOL!!
I loved the piping. That's was a proper welcome indeed. 84F is pretty cool for us. The summer was brutal. We had 100F straight for about 3 months. I was glad when it broke. I'll have to check out the Society. I ran back some ancestors and found out Mary, Queen of Scots is my Great Grandmother.
Excellent video! Glad you made the acquaintance of the Scottish Society of San Antonio. I am a member of the Fresno (California) Scottish Society...and the Clan MacNeil Association of the USA, and the Clan Sinclair Association of the USA. Despite my German-sounding name, I am proud of the large chunk of my ancestry that is Scottish. It also happens that my 1st Cousin 6 times removed was Jesse McCoy, a member of the Gonzales Rangers who came to reinforce the Alamo, and gave his life there.
Nice to meet you! Your tartan drew my eye. I'm a 1st generation Canadian-born Nelson from the Clan Gunn and my paternal grandmother was a Baird. Her cousin was John Logie Baird who was the innovator of live television. Growing up, my Dad called our computer tower "Nelson's Column." LOL Heather xo
@@tooblessedtobestressed9715 The tartan is Macneil of Barra ancient...Very similar to Gunn. Had some friends in years past who were very active in Clan Gunn USA. Good people.
I am aware that the history of the Alamo (and of Texas independence) is far from being as simple as it has been portrayed in movies. Don't want to set off any political discussions, especially since the politics of the Mexican war for independence from Spain can be pretty confusing (I didn't know until recently that Spain did not finally recognize the independence of Mexico until 1836!), and what went on in Texas had everything to do with what had been going on in that conflict and its aftermath.
My reason for mentioning Jesse McCoy is how clearly he represents my family's knack for finding themselves in History...like most of us, if we only knew!
I have not figured out how to avoid that issue myself. It's still disconcerting to hear some young person say, when they learn I am a VietNam veteran, "I read about that in history class."
Love your Bolo tie! Looks very southern.
So loved your video of SA! I am 5th generation Texan of Scottish ancestry. I also live in San Antonio. So enjoyed your story from a Scots viewpoint!! You would fit in perfectly here in Texas. Would have loved to met you & your wife. Scots are brave & why we are loud & proud. Loved the shirt btw. God Bless ❤🏴
That’s a great honor. I’ve heard, as a Texan, you have to watch “Lonesome Dove” at least once every year.
I’m from San Antonio myself and it’s very cool to see you had such a good experience here aside from our brutally hot summers. The heat is something you definitely have to get used to living here. Hopefully, you were able to find some good local cuisine during your stay
So proud you have the means and the ability to see for yourself.
So wonderful to see you explore an American heritage while visiting your Scottish heritage!
Even though I already said so months ago on IG, congratulations Shaun. 🎊 👍
8:00 My grandmother's maiden name was McMullen. She was born in 1917, in Indiana. But I don't know anything about her parents. No idea if they were born in Ireland/Scotland (I have Irish ancestory throught grandma) or in the US.
Congrats Shaun. Hoping to go there for a late B-Day tomorrow. I am sad I missed you. Just moved to a nearby small town two years ago. :(
Congratulations to you both and Welcome! I was born and raised in SA! So happy to welcome you!
Born in Texas, my Scottish ancestors came to the US in the late 18th century or before because of the clearances and the 45, but includes Highlanders. Closest is 4 generations back to a Scottish-American, who was a third generation American. But most of the recent others were English. Not ashamed of any of them! The British pub on the Riverwalk, was there in 2000 ;-)
Great job Shaun and Teka! God bless you!
Welcome to Texas, Y'all!
Warms the heart
THANKS TO ALL THE NEWS.
The Bolo tie is not supposed to be worn pinched tight to your neck, loosen it up about an inch or two. It should hang just below the hollow of your throat.
That Stetson hat looks great along with that bolo tie.👍
Love your videos. I wish you could do all 50 states.
Nice hat!
Congrats on your Texan citizenship! Please understand it comes with responsibilities though. Please extend the kindness and southern hospitality to all those whom you encounter in your travels that you experienced in Texas.
That was sweet of them!
Come on wee laddie 🏴🇺🇸
Also, I learned something from this vlog - scots were at the Alamo. But thinking about the history of this country, it really does not surprise me as I knew about the men sent here as well as to other countries after the culloden episode occurred. Thank you for this further knowledge. Texas is one of the states that I have not stopped to visit but I did drive thru it a few times in the panhandle area.
