This was so therapeutic and relaxing to watch. As well it’s also such an excellent video of how to care and maintain your well purchased shoes. Good shoes are a worthwhile investment in your overall presentation and appearance. Just taking the time in this video and shine the shoes and showing us all how, here and there explaining the leather restoration, polishing, patina does a lot to educate many of us who all have leather shoes and try our best to care for them. I really learned a lot just watching. Time to go shine my shoes as the leathers are hungry for some that restoration cream.

Yep. AE makes good wide ones. I scored two Wilberts in 2 and 3e for around 50. Worth paying a cobbler for lighter soles though as the stock rubber is insane.

Quick question, when you compared the two boots the sole of that gorgeous shell cordovan looked brand new. Have you ever worn them or have you worn them so much you needed to get them resoled? Hi, Preston. I've been watching your channel for a while, so of course I know that you really like Saphir products-they certainly are a massive step up from something like Kiwi, and to date are my go-to as well. Have you ever tried Pure Polish? I heard about it here on UA-cam, and haven't tried it, but I find it intriguing. It's apparently made in the USA with all natural ingredients and is supposed to be of quality comparable to Saphir. Being made domestically, of course, means much lower cost; I don't even want to know how much of the cost of Saphir here in the US is because of the overseas shipping and import fees.

I know I'm not Preston so I cannot 100% speak for him but he's stated in many videos that he switches up his creams quite often. For the most part, it seems, though, that he uses Saphir light brown for walnut/tan shoes, Saphir bordeaux for dark brown shoes, Hermés red for oxblood/red shoes, Saphir mahogany for any shade of red-brown, Saphir navy for navy, green for green, etc. For more specialized colors he uses mixtures, the two in particular I'm thinking of Allen Edmonds cigar he uses bordeaux and cognac, and Allen Edmonds dark chilli he uses dark brown and mahogany.
Any idea where to find these again? I would love to try a pair
QUESTION: Are you stripping the sheen on it, or are you stripping the color? By doing the strip job, are you simply trying to get the conditioner to the base leather or are you doing it for some other reason?

Hey, Duke. You can use acetone at any time but just be careful since it’s very harsh and will strip anything off. Renomat is safer and and more gentle so be judicious

Hi. I notice that some shoes makes a squicky sound. Especially when you walk. Do you have any advice for that? Have this one pair that the right shoe makes that sound and it makes me not wearing the pair. Very sorry about that as it is a wonderful pair of leather shoes.

Nice. For next winter I think I'll probably get a pair of miles & louie blucher boots. I'd prefer a pair of allen edmonds but I don't have deep enough pockets. I'm also not sure that allen edmonds is really any better than miles & louie.

I bought my very first pair of custom-made boots and they came with those steel things in the bottom. It rains a lot here in Scotland and the tips make my feet slightly slippery! Am I doing something wrong?

I’ve never done it but if you decide to do it, a normal regular conditioner would do.
Where do you find discontinued AE shoes/boots?
Thoughts on boot cedar trees versus standards?. They are basically double in price and I have a few but not sure its worth converting to them for my remaining pairs. Thanks
Not worth it to be honest. Just a cool looking piece but normal trees work just as well for boots.
On Thursday boots do yiu recommend the acetone treatment as well?
Hey, Carlos! Not on Thursday boots. Their chrome tanned leather needs nothing but a leather conditioner.
SENSUALITY
Quick question: If I wear waxed shoes in the rain, they get these white spots and cloudiness in the colour, which makes the shoe look untreated and/or dirty. Brushing and applying renovateur or some other shoe balm, solves it but only until they get water on them again. The question is: How do I avoid it?

Saphir is horrible at water spots... I found that after shining with saphir, using collonil cream helps give the shoes a little more water resistance.
Alternatively, wear a black pair if your know it is going to rain
@@ivanyudaji Even the black pairs -if waxed- have the same problem. I think that it's something that I am doing wrong. Not brushing enough, using too much wax etc.

@@ivanyudaji The full process: dust with a medium bristle brush, shoe balm, leaving it 4-5 minutes, brushing with a shining brush, shoe cream, leaving it to dry, brushing with a shining brush, applying one layer of wax with a cotton rag (cut up tshirt), brushing to a shine and then a soft mirror shining (I don't often get white spots on my mirror shine except for some extremely rainy conditions.).
The quick process (if the pair is already maintained) is: dusting, shoe balm and then brushing to a shine
@@GiorgioGM maybe one more coat of wax? I usually wax 2-3 times with saphir. Sadly Singapore rains very often so I face this a lot.. More so with my lighter brown shoes.
Vinegar and water mixture works for me sometimes, you could try?

Random question-any suggestions about cordovan shoe creams for the chili cordovan shoes? Saphir and Boot Black are the only companies I have found that make pigmented cordovan creams and I was hoping to find a lighter reddish shade than they seem to make. I don’t like using neutral cordovan creams because they tend to to accumulate a white reside the first few wearings after polishing requiring more brushing. Steve K.
Hey, Steve! Good question! As far As I know, they don’t make a chili cordovan cream. Here’s what you can do, buy Saphir from the Beaut De Cuir line with the gold and blue lids. They come in like 200 different colors.
They are safe and don’t penetrate leather very well so they are safe to use on shell in my opinion. It’s what I’m going to do.

I knew you would know what to do! I’ve stayed away from the Beauté de Cuir line because I’ve never liked it for leather shoes. Finding out that this disadvantage for leather is an advantage for use on shell cordovan is a revelation for me!
I’ll keep it in mind for these shoes as they age if I need to tweak them a bit!
Maybe this would be a good subject for you to do a video about-using the Beauté de Cuir polish for tinting shell?

It wouldn't tint shell, sadly. There isn't really any shoe dye or cream that shell absorbs apart from the Medaille d'Or cordovan cream line. Beauté du Cuir does help a lot for restoring bits of lost pigment (basically just scratches) but would brush off before tinting a shoe.
I’ve spent more time shining my shoes rather than wearing my shoes over the last 4 months or so. The Zoom-culture even at my Executive meetings has shed jacket and tie, and I now mostly present in my slippers(!)
I have discovered that old school Venetian cream, still available in multiple tints does a great job with the chili cordovan, though I haven’t even road-tested my results.
I have about 150 shoes in shell cordovan alone-polished, shined, and arranged in my changing room-and literally no place to go anymore.

Quick question for you sir, I've been having some issues with my shoe cream routine and I'm wondering if i'm doing something wrong.
Simply put, my (pigmented) shoe cream doesn't seem to fully absorb into the leather, and even after I brush/cloth the excess, it leaves these sort of streak marks (almost looks like marbling) of shoe cream that isn't absorbed into to leather, so rather than giving colour to the leather itself, it's more just sitting on top of it and it looks patchy.
Could it be because I'm applying the cream after the conditioner? However, in all the videos i've ever seen, the saphir renovateur always goes on *before* the coloured shoe cream...
Would you advise against applying the colour cream before the colourless conditioner?
Any help is appreciated.

I ran into the same problem with my black Park Avenues. It happens sometimes, it's not necessarily a mistake you're making! After watching Trenton and Heath I tried buffing the shoes lightly with a soft rag to take off the excess pigment and that did the trick. Alternatively you could try using a different brush (I use a cheap, crappy Kiwi brush and that's probably part of my problem) or use less cream. Hope this helps!
Would you perform the same treatment to chromexcel boots? I've seen mixed opinions on how much is necessary since that leather is naturally more oily. I live in europe so it's hard to get the usually recommended venetian shoe cream or saphir for it as well.
My man, Saphir is a European brand (from France). Look up A Fine Pair of Shoes, you can get Saphir products there.
That being said, you SHOULD NOT strip your chromexel/oiled leather shoes with acetone or Reno'Mat. They're oiled leather, doing that will strip them of that and wreck the leather. All they need is a good conditioner. There are some dedicated oiled leather conditioners, like Venetian Shoe Cream, Saphir Oiled Leather Cream (either Beauté du Cuir or Medaille d'Or), but really any conditioner will do, even things like Bick 4, Kiwii Lather Lotion, or Kiwi Conditioning Oil. Hope this helps
Preston do you have different horse hair final polish brushes for black and brown shoes or do you use the same brush for either coloured shoe?
He tends to use the same brush for the final buff.

Rookie question. Why do you only mirror the toe?
Hey Preston. Do conditioners do anything for the leather if you already have a wax coat on your shoes? Do they penetrate the wax? Other then buffing and touching up your wax coat, what sort of after 'the mirror shine' care can you do for your shoes?
I have a very nice dress shoe that I really like because of you. But I can only afford 1 at the moment. Give me something else to do. I've even resorted to polishing my leather Caterpillar boots! 🤣
Usually your overall wax coat on the shoe comes off after a wear or two, so conditioner will be absorbed in between-wear maintenence. To maintain a mirror shined pair of shoes after wearing them, usually one goes through the same mirror shining process, just streamlined. Less of everything and overall less buffing, too.

I only have 2 boot trees and one pair is in my shell cordovan 5th sheets are my others are in my Carlos Santos field boot. I’ll have to get another pair soon.

When I get my shoes recrafted by AE, I always pay extra for the double sole.
How much does it cost to be redrafted with the double sole?
Do you need to go to a cobbler to have the toe/heal taps installed or is it something you can do at home?
I recommend using a cobbler. It can be done if you have time and skill but a mistake can be really detrimental. There are tutorials on UA-cam if you wish to try however.
What last was the fifth street built on?
The 65 last. Just like strands and park avenues.

I would personally add some Sole Guard in such a mix, but you tend to never use that product. Apparently you never encounter damp floors in that neck of the woods...
Triple E arent that wide tho? I mean my shoes are H width, which is a lot wider, am i correct. If narrow shoes hurtmy feet, and H least are good for me, which leasts do you recommend for me?
Do you live in the UK? In the USA, EEE is the widest normal width available. There is 4 and 5E but that’s very rare.

I watched reviews, read up on the Allen Edmonds manufacturing methods and history, it all sounded great. So I bought a pair of Chukka Boots, great product, great purchasing experience overall, I decided to buy more shoes. Bought a pair of Dalton Wingtip Dress Boots. I received 2 different color boots, also one of the boots seemed to be a different vintage or much older and had been on display for some time. Multiple price tickers attached and removed, physical dimensions were different, a different cut of the same style. I called customer service, they apologized and said they would send out another pair, free shipping. Got the next pair, shoes are with out a doubt reject, factory second shoes. I wear a size 9.5, the shoes I received are a size 8 or possible even smaller, but marked as a 9.5 D The shoes were also misshapen. The left looked like a right, the toe was curved outward. The worst quality I've seen from any shoe company, shameful quality.
How do you wash your cloths after you finish a pair of shoes?
You don't wash shoeshine cloths. It's actually good to have a build up of wax in them because that makes it easier to get good shines. When it's too gunky you just toss it.

What is the difference between a single oak and a double oak sole?
Single oak are thinner and more maleable. Double oak are two single oaks so they are more robust and last longer.
Question for you Preston. All I really own are leather shoes and I know rain can ruin a pair of leather shoes sometimes. Living on the east coast of Canada, we get a lot of rain, slush, snow, etc. and all I have to wear is these leather shoes. I know a wax can help the shoes, but what do you wear/do when it is really raining out to not ruin a pair of your leather shoes? Do you worry about the shoes when it is just a minor rain shower as well or no? Kind of OCD and don't want to ruin my investments if you know what I mean lol. Thanks Preston!
Hey, Logan! I recommend saving your best dress shoes for dryer and safer weather. When it’s nasty outside, I wear boots with daintie or lugged soles but I don’t wear my really nice shoes. Water can really ruin a good pair.
The Elegant Oxford I have been wearing some Dainite Chromexcel Chukka’s as of late in the rain, along with some Canada West Crazy Horse Chelsea’s in the snow. Sucks how even then you’re putting your boots at risk lol
