Natasha Hynes, from Montreal, Canada, bought a Dodge Sprinter van in 2021 with the dream of waking up in the mountains of the West Coast. After downsizing her life to move out of a toxic living situation and into a van with her 3 cats, Natasha crossed the country overcoming many obstacles along the way.
Over the following four months she would cross the country two more times, once on her way to document a historic moment in Canada, and another after being abandoned without a vehicle by her then co-traveler on the wrong side of the county.
While facing many life-threatening scenarios along the way, she made her way back to her van on the west-coast. Her vlog, Quest Out West, chronicles the good and bad of van life, travel, and life struggles without the glamorous bias you see on social media, with the ultimate goal of inspiring you to face your fears, transcend limitations, and go after the life you really want.

I just watched the last part of this video thinking it was over when you decided to not stay the night at the Lake. I guess it went to ad or something, I thought it was over. I have driven all over BC and AB in every direction and as scenic as that stretch between Pemberton to theHorseshoe Bay exit is, it’s notorious for nut bar drivers. I call it the last resort route and over the years with the expansion after the Olympics, the traffic volume has just gotten ridiculous. It’s too bad you didn’t get to explore the northern end of the Vancouver Island, when you were over here, north of Campbell River. It’s so unlike the south end and lower mainland and might suit you better. Perhaps you might like to explore it online. As for the spammer dude who was so butthurt…what is there to say? He could have chose a quick prayer of love and protection which would have gone a lot farther than punitive criticism. God is Love❤. Don’t let it discourage you.

One tip you might consider is when cooking out in the woods like you are it might attract a bear or a cougar or something. I always keep that in mind so that I can leave immediately. I also have one of those really loud airhorns ready at hand.

I love your story and have watched your struggle a while now. and feel I need to share some bush knowledge with you. I’m a bush woman and have travelled thousands of miles on backroads for years. Let me offer you this advice. Your vehicle is all you have and you just can’t risk those roads this time of year. It can’t handle what the backroads would put it through for very long. Those roads are rough, washed out and muddy this time of year. I know that road your on and it’s stretching the limits for an older well worn van designed for family use. Wait a while longer when the weather is drier and the roads have been graded. The last thing you need is a costly breakdown. Avoid deactivated roads and be sure you have your headlights on. You also need to sharpen your bush skills dear. It’s spring, bears are coming out, cougars are on the prowl ( they love cats as do larger raptor birds) and there’s probably a few coyotes. Trust your instincts. ❤

I’ve been living in my RV for nine years and my system for finding a spot is pretty much the same as what you’re doing. I drive until I find a spot to park and get out and walk the area. You have good instincts!

YAY a video out in nature :) I would react the same way too if I was camping out alone in the woods. Every little sound I hear makes me wonder what that was. My biggest fear about camping alone is running into dangerous wildlife or maybe a bad person. But, I think the more you solo camp in the woods the more you get used to it and less scared.

Hi Natasha, I don't like driving at night either, and that truck up close behind you would scare most people. I'm glad you got away from the that place and all those trees, it was too closed in for my liking, and when I saw the signs a bit earlier warning of bears that worried me even more. We don't have bears in the wild here in the UK 🇬🇧 but I know what they are capable of, and you cooking out there got me very concerned for your safety. I remember watching one of Steve's videos( camping with Steve) where he set up to cook but he got a bad feeling and he was near a lot of bushes, and decided to move somewhere else a bit safer. And we might not have bears in the wild, but we have big cats. I've seen 2 the first was definitely a Panther ( Black Leopard) and the 2nd one I saw was a little smaller, but definitely was not a domestic cat. There are many sightings all over the UK and apparently the first sighting I had was nothing unusual, cause quite a few people in that particular area had seen them or it depending on if there's more than one. A little scary when I think about it and the way the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. But I think the idea of a home base for you and your cats is a good idea, and a off road vehicle to go driving around exploring. And by the way, Toyota Rav 4 have a very good review, well over here they do but I'm sure it's the same in Canada 🇨🇦

Like the into. You are a city girl. Don’t mean to offend. But those noises are the noises you hear in nature. Yes you are in a van and there is bears, wild animals etc. but they are more afraid of you than you are of them. The first time staying by yourself at night can be scary but if you ride it out then you will learn the different noises. You have said it before face you’re fears. You have come so far and have grown so much that is what you have been looking forward to. don’t psych yourself out. Drive through their early. I also understand you are weary of your vehicle and traveling down those roads. Maybe you would be better off in a sticks and bricks and travel when you can. Again don’t want to offend you. But baby steps will get you where you want to be. You have gone through so much, and worked so hard to turn back now. But if you are not enjoying it then maybe Vanlife is not your cup of tea. Good luck to you. Look for to the next video.

I’m planning to purchase a cargo van in the next couple months. Saving up and making big plans at the moment.
If you offer your land for van dwellers to use for a night or two on their way by, then you could enjoy the feel of changing “scenery”… by having your guests coming and going 😁. Just a thought.

Go, girl....it is a lot and more complicated than you think it will be.....it has its good moments, but it has equal amounts of complications. Keto changed my life....lost and kept off 25 lbs for 3 years....helped my blood pressure, ability to think clearly....lots of benefits. I get that you feel it would be better to be around people. I was in Moab last year and this story had just happened..... and a guy was camped in the mountains on BML land....he wanted solitude. But a couple parked near him, perhaps feeling better to be around someone.....but it made him angry....to the point that he shot the couple dead. Not everyone wants you to camp near them....they may be wonderful people or not so much. Be careful, sweet lady. Praying for you.....caution is wisdom.
