Natasha Hynes, from Montreal, Canada, bought a Dodge Sprinter van in 2021 with the dream of waking up in the mountains of the West Coast. After downsizing her life to move out of a toxic living situation and into a van with her 3 cats, Natasha crossed the country overcoming many obstacles along the way.
Over the following four months she would cross the country two more times, once on her way to document a historic moment in Canada, and another after being abandoned without a vehicle by her then co-traveler on the wrong side of the county.
While facing many life-threatening scenarios along the way, she made her way back to her van on the west-coast. Her vlog, Quest Out West, chronicles the good and bad of van life, travel, and life struggles without the glamorous bias you see on social media, with the ultimate goal of inspiring you to face your fears, transcend limitations, and go after the life you really want.
Got my first spam bot guys! I made it! Im famous! 😆 If you see a comment from "me" pls read the name carefully. It might be a fake account impersonating me.
I just watched the last part of this video thinking it was over when you decided to not stay the night at the Lake. I guess it went to ad or something, I thought it was over. I have driven all over BC and AB in every direction and as scenic as that stretch between Pemberton to theHorseshoe Bay exit is, it’s notorious for nut bar drivers. I call it the last resort route and over the years with the expansion after the Olympics, the traffic volume has just gotten ridiculous. It’s too bad you didn’t get to explore the northern end of the Vancouver Island, when you were over here, north of Campbell River. It’s so unlike the south end and lower mainland and might suit you better. Perhaps you might like to explore it online. As for the spammer dude who was so butthurt…what is there to say? He could have chose a quick prayer of love and protection which would have gone a lot farther than punitive criticism. God is Love❤. Don’t let it discourage you.
I saw in my notify! Dang girl you are super famous now 😅
One tip you might consider is when cooking out in the woods like you are it might attract a bear or a cougar or something. I always keep that in mind so that I can leave immediately. I also have one of those really loud airhorns ready at hand.
I was thinking the same as well, and was worried that Natasha might have an unexpected dinner guest 🐻🐈 😳
I love your story and have watched your struggle a while now. and feel I need to share some bush knowledge with you. I’m a bush woman and have travelled thousands of miles on backroads for years. Let me offer you this advice. Your vehicle is all you have and you just can’t risk those roads this time of year. It can’t handle what the backroads would put it through for very long. Those roads are rough, washed out and muddy this time of year. I know that road your on and it’s stretching the limits for an older well worn van designed for family use. Wait a while longer when the weather is drier and the roads have been graded. The last thing you need is a costly breakdown. Avoid deactivated roads and be sure you have your headlights on. You also need to sharpen your bush skills dear. It’s spring, bears are coming out, cougars are on the prowl ( they love cats as do larger raptor birds) and there’s probably a few coyotes. Trust your instincts. ❤
Thank you!
I’ve been living in my RV for nine years and my system for finding a spot is pretty much the same as what you’re doing. I drive until I find a spot to park and get out and walk the area. You have good instincts!
YAY a video out in nature :) I would react the same way too if I was camping out alone in the woods. Every little sound I hear makes me wonder what that was. My biggest fear about camping alone is running into dangerous wildlife or maybe a bad person. But, I think the more you solo camp in the woods the more you get used to it and less scared.
The humans are the danger. Animals are scared to death of us. With the exception of a mountain lion.
When you say "Camping" I hope you don't mean in a tent, cause its not safe. You have no protection especially from predators and that includes the 2 legged types.
Luv your honestly. It's good to know nomad life isnt all a bed of roses.
It’s hard to do things that don’t feel familiar. I’m with you. Stay where you know your surroundings.
You tried. 💕
This is gonna sound WEIRD but I'm SO PROUD OF YOU RIGHT NOW!!!! And I know you don't need validation from a stranger on the internet...but I am saying g it anyway
You have inspired me today. THANK YOU!!!
You need a home base. I understand what you're trying to say. Age IS a factor. The fact that you are a woman alone is a BIG factor. You'll find the right place to land. Hang in there!!🙂
Im a city girl.. Not going into places where there are no street lights!! 😱😱😱😱😱
Love nature sounds. I live in the country and nature is the reason i’m here. Enjoyed your adventure. I understand those concerns with getting stuck etc. But nature can be so soothing. Peace ☮
Very exciting. Night driving is no recommend at all, try early adventures, so you can be back at Walmart before dark. Great Vlog!😉
Great video.... I know for myself it was so freeing to totally minimize all my stuff and have more clear space... sounds like you have clarity about what you love.
Finding a good camping spot isn’t as easy as people think! I was actually nervous watching you on that muddy road! Glad you listened to your instincts. You’re doing fine lol. 😆
Not gonna lie - I cracked up when that mosquito startled you! I love your honest, unfiltered videos - they're always entertaining! 🤣
hope all going well don't b scared of what hasn't happened yet fear is what keeps you unhappy. i started keto a week ago or maybe i should say off and on a week ago lol good luck, we here for ya!
watch out for the wildlife they'll smell your food cooking..you need to buy plastic containers to store and organise your things in the van you'll find youll have so much more space..
It's good to know who you are and what your comfort level is and be good with that.
Listen to your gut.And take care.❤😊
Hi Natasha, I don't like driving at night either, and that truck up close behind you would scare most people. I'm glad you got away from the that place and all those trees, it was too closed in for my liking, and when I saw the signs a bit earlier warning of bears that worried me even more. We don't have bears in the wild here in the UK 🇬🇧 but I know what they are capable of, and you cooking out there got me very concerned for your safety. I remember watching one of Steve's videos( camping with Steve) where he set up to cook but he got a bad feeling and he was near a lot of bushes, and decided to move somewhere else a bit safer. And we might not have bears in the wild, but we have big cats. I've seen 2 the first was definitely a Panther ( Black Leopard) and the 2nd one I saw was a little smaller, but definitely was not a domestic cat. There are many sightings all over the UK and apparently the first sighting I had was nothing unusual, cause quite a few people in that particular area had seen them or it depending on if there's more than one. A little scary when I think about it and the way the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. But I think the idea of a home base for you and your cats is a good idea, and a off road vehicle to go driving around exploring. And by the way, Toyota Rav 4 have a very good review, well over here they do but I'm sure it's the same in Canada 🇨🇦
A pointed shovel and a couple of thick planks of wood would good to have on you if you are on roads like this. Next level up is a winch etc.
Good way to attract the bears is to cook out in the open like that. LoL
THIS CONTENT IS AMAZING!!! YOU ARE HIKING. YOU ARE CAMPING, TAKING RISKS YOU ARE INSPIRING ME!!!! I LOVE THISSSSSS❤❤❤❤❤
I laughed so hard at home is the Walmart parking lot because this is me looking for a lot to close my eyes and be still! sometimes I laugh at myself and how hard it's been to change my situation.
Like the into. You are a city girl. Don’t mean to offend. But those noises are the noises you hear in nature. Yes you are in a van and there is bears, wild animals etc. but they are more afraid of you than you are of them. The first time staying by yourself at night can be scary but if you ride it out then you will learn the different noises. You have said it before face you’re fears. You have come so far and have grown so much that is what you have been looking forward to. don’t psych yourself out. Drive through their early. I also understand you are weary of your vehicle and traveling down those roads. Maybe you would be better off in a sticks and bricks and travel when you can. Again don’t want to offend you. But baby steps will get you where you want to be. You have gone through so much, and worked so hard to turn back now. But if you are not enjoying it then maybe Vanlife is not your cup of tea. Good luck to you. Look for to the next video.
I've owned both ,A Rav4 great gas mi. And Jeep Sport. loved them both! Jeep has more room.
I totally get that back road being scared. I attempted and turned around because I had a sedan and no cell phone service and by myself.
I think the same way about camping way out off grid and yes in my 20s I would’ve went anywhere daredevil in that which I did just not in the woods that other things at that time
It's interesting. I am much more comfortable alone in the woods than in the city. I guess it's the unfamiliar that is the issue. I live in the woods so am used to the noises, the wildlife, the potential for break downs on my way into town.
Please, please, please don’t delete your channel. Just delete them delete them and block them. Who’s a lot of those type of Christians out there are not Christians just block him they’re brainwashed.
💯
LOL I caught that "step 2" somebody watches Steve Willis 😅
Yay!!!! 😁
Favourite part was when you almost said kamboucha had a beer like taste. Ha. “No it doesn’t”.
I appreciate that you’ve done a vloggy type video. I really like the ones u do like that!!
I’m planning to purchase a cargo van in the next couple months. Saving up and making big plans at the moment.
If you offer your land for van dwellers to use for a night or two on their way by, then you could enjoy the feel of changing “scenery”… by having your guests coming and going 😁. Just a thought.
I want to do something like that anyways. Ppl need resources. We shall see what happens.
First time subscriber. I'm also making plans to start car camping next month. I'm really nervous but I want to try. I've never done anything like this but I've watched so many channels of others doing it. Time will tell. Lol
Go, girl....it is a lot and more complicated than you think it will be.....it has its good moments, but it has equal amounts of complications. Keto changed my life....lost and kept off 25 lbs for 3 years....helped my blood pressure, ability to think clearly....lots of benefits. I get that you feel it would be better to be around people. I was in Moab last year and this story had just happened..... and a guy was camped in the mountains on BML land....he wanted solitude. But a couple parked near him, perhaps feeling better to be around someone.....but it made him angry....to the point that he shot the couple dead. Not everyone wants you to camp near them....they may be wonderful people or not so much. Be careful, sweet lady. Praying for you.....caution is wisdom.
WTF?! 😨
It's worse to drive at night in a unknown area and roads
Love your attitude! Just go with the flow but trust your gut with places your feelings are valid and rational at any age! Safe travels....
Wish you a great week natasha 😇🙏⭐
Baby steps girl. You should have camped at the lookout. You were close to the main road. So you felt safe and yet still boondocking. You’ll get there
OMG!!!
Lol! New to your channel and l think you're funny and real. I can totally see myself in you and I'm laughing!
Have you thought about buying some small plots of land in various areas so you can travel but still have your own property in the woods to escape to. My MIL and FIL are considering doing this
That's a really cool idea. Right now I would like to afford one. 😆
That’s so funny you cook like I do make it as easy as possible
ALWAYS TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS!!! Even if you don’t understand why! Do it anyways. Most often you will regret not listening to your inner voice!
I spent a lot of time in the woods. There’s always a lot of unexplainable noises after a while. You just don’t even pay attention to it.
I wouldn't cook ground beef in an area and at a time of year with bears about.
Good morning from Western Australia. So good to see you're doing great and absolutely love your adventures. Be safe.
Love the video and good to see your trying new roads. Scarey but I think you will get use to it after a few goes. Need to find a better camp. Do some day trips and check out some camp sites while your out. Always set up camp before dark. Nice scenery and good for you trying. ❤❤
Journey lift kit and good truck tires. Keep the van. Give good time up to get as much power. Vans are versatile but not a of road vehicle
That sounds like a safety whistle. Like one of those orange safety whistles. Whatever it is I don’t like it. 😳
omg you are as crazy as "travel snacks" you two should caravan, I'm sure ya'll would get along great. lol
I would love to hang out with Travel Snacks. Hopefully one day I will get the chance.
Now this is an adventure 😳 I’m with ya...holding on to my oh shit bar 😳
I think I would’ve reacted the same way i’m scared of my own shadow. Never mind creepy noises being in the dark alone I’m glad you made it back to your safe spot
Hi Natasha, glad you made it safely to Walmart.❤️🙏🏼👍🏼👍🏼✌🏼❤️🐈⬛🐈⬛🐈
I missed your live, going to be watching the replay now. I thought of you when I watched Chrome today, he is looking to hire an editor. Sounds like this could be you.
Interesting. Thank you Helene.
You’re very welcome! ❤️✌🏼
85 in a 90! Holy crap! I’m from TN and we would be breaking the law x 2 going that fast! Lol Geez that outta be fast enough for him! He needs a smack down. Lol
Kilometeres. Its like 55 mph 😄
@@QuestOutWest thanks for clearing that up 🤣 I would have been a wreck from just having to run 85 regardless of the jerk behind me 🤣🤣🤣
The way you threw that steak onto the pan at 11:44 had me cracking up for some reason.....also does 8:23 mean the end of Vanlife soon?
Im not sure when. I had just made a big plan for this year with lots of adventures, but I feel like life is gonna bring me where I need to be when I need to be there so its a bit out of my control.
Don't blame you. I would also not spend the night. Lol
You are braver than I was
Do you follow Cat Lady Van (Emi) or Vancity vanlife (Chrome) and their circle of friends. Also, Tidelinetoalpine (Amanda). They would be good to connect with for advice and help doing vanlife.
its a bueatiful songbird
How many cats do you have in a minivan?
3
I'd go camping with you
😊
😊
Must be tiring to be so scared all the time. Your aura is what attracts the weirdos You give off Hella scared vibes.
Lol it’s funny to see nervous folks when out in wilderness. There’s no relax and enjoying this for you is there? I would hope you find relax n peace out there somehow ❤ But whoever rode your butt that close in the dark was an ass! Probably not best to drive those damn roads at night oh my gosh ! You did it ! Amenn
I would much rather be parked at Walmart 😂
Strongs. Xx
Girlfriend you must a stone to the bone city girl. I'm very happy that you decided to get out your comfort zone and get out and explore just a bit. Bravo! But you had me laughing when you high tailed it back to Walmart. LMAO.
I’m sorry you had such an experience. The person in the truck….what an a hole 😒
Naive. No dirt road driving experience in a pavement vehicle. Risking a vehicle which you sleep in or sleeping in a cat box, what ever you call it. Are you in bear territory, are you prepared?
I don't want to freak you out but are you sure that wasn't actually the PREDATOR? 😂
Turn the volume all the way up & have ear buds. At 14:58, it sounds like a freakin' bigfoot or something speak growls while you're talking!!
Awesome 😎
Think u need Crome 😂
you are way too scary to be in the woodlands. you will never enjoy yourself. stay in established camp grounds,
Not trying to be a A_ _ Hole!. But, it would of made more sense to scout out either road(s) during the daylight and can see what you need to see. I believe if you got up there driving in the night you wouldn"
t have a clear idea of how to get back safely and could be there all night because, of a flat or any other problems. And keep a extra key(s) around your neck in case you lose them or get to scared and panic and lock yourself out of your vehicle. And cutting your steak in a skillet while it was setting on top of your coleman stove was sliding around . I swear, I thought you were gonna dump it on the ground. Just Saying...
Check out discount lots
And the Democrats want to reintroduce Grizzly bears , yikes!
I totally get that back road being scared. I attempted and turned around because I had a sedan and no cell phone service and by myself.
That’s so funny you cook like I do make it as easy as possible
