    I did an HPDE weekend in my couple year old M235. My buddy totaled his e36 M3 on Day 1. If I didn't have the track day insurance, I would have parked it in the stable and not have done another lap. It was an absolute blast, an amazing amount of knowledge gained about technique and what my car could do, and experience I would not change one bit - but I haven't had any strong longing to go back for another with this car. Every session, a car would leave with damage and I wore the shoulders off my front Super Sports.

    I have tracked daily drivers for nearly 20 years. Given that I lease, they stay stock. Except for SRF brake fluid. It survives track weekends very well. BMW CCA Tarheel chapter (NC) and others require annual brake flushes. Its a good thing to do during your first track inspection of the year. Current daily track car is an M2 Comp. It's a mobile radiator with plenty of factory cooling but I haven't tried it in 100 degree days yet. I rarely do track insurance. That and the stock leased cars, keep me grounded and probably keep me from progressing to the next level of experience/abilities as some friends have. An e30/e36/e46 track toy should be in my future, but we shall see.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 3 роки тому +1

      You lease a car and don't do track insurance? Your lease will almost certainly say something about track driving. That's risky at best. Especially if you end up having to pay for damage to other cars as well as your own. 🙄

  • @frozenpete788
    @frozenpete788 3 роки тому +1

    I would add it depends also on what you are expecting (technical aspects aside). If you like a 90% daily and 10% track duty or the opposite. A stock car is full of compromises, pad noise, tyre grip and noise, suspensions, etc. Or if you are ready to live with less comfort (keep in mind the daily aspect).
    I run Ate type 200 (previously racing blue) brake fluid. On my lighter cars I'm very happy with it indeed. It lives a bit longer than rbf I've found, it's a bit less effective but it's also less expensive. Anyway, good video Tedward, because I think we are a lot in that case 👍

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  3 роки тому +1

      I don't think you can call something a daily driver if its any less than 90% street use though. If its the opposite at 90% track and 10% street then its not a daily. It's a street legal track car

    When I ran my e36 M3, I found that I could get away with a cool down every couple of laps to keep the tires (RE71Rs) and oil cool. Granted, I'm no phenomenal driver, and my brake kit was pretty overkill. On the other hand, I tracked my r53 mini with some basic sporty street pads and 'performance' all-seasons, and even on a slow track it struggled to get a whole hot lap in before the front tires got greasy and the brakes got scary. Absolutely not recommended - get a good summer tire at the bare minimum and a real track pad, potentially even a front rotor/caliper upgrade for cars that were never intended for track use.

    i just bought my first car, one of the first things i thought "i'm gonna track day this thing" but... is a nice and reliable daily driver, it would be smarter to keep it like that.
    maybe i should wait to have money (and space) to buy a beater and turn it into a track toy, because it would hurt less to damage a cheap somewhat running car than a perfectly good daily driver.

    • @another3997

      Get to know your car properly on the road before you take it to a track, just doing normal everyday driving. You need to feel at ease with it, know how it feels and sounds in normal use. Then, when you go on track the first time, don't go mad. Drive a few laps at speeds you are used to, learn the track and you don't need to worry about the car doing strange things. Build up slowly, and remember... it isn't a race. Going on track in an unfamiliar car is asking for trouble.

    I had been searching for a video like this for so long. I started doubting my decision to follow the advice of a guy I met at the track, who convinced me to buy a second track car. Consequently, I went ahead and purchased a Renault Twingo 1 for 700 euros. I invested an additional 700 euros into it to ensure good service and added a pair of inexpensive coilovers and track pads. Now, I am enjoying tracking it and avoiding the risk of breaking the bank if I crash.
    The only downside is that it contradicts my beliefs regarding cars. I have always desired to own a luxurious sports car that I can use as a daily driver and occasionally take to the track. I feel that by having a dedicated track car, there is no longer a point in having a nice daily sports car - crushing my logical sense for owning a nice Type R for instance. After all, why would I want one if I can't fully exploit its potential on the street anyway? 😪

    I wouldn't track my car because I cannot stand how helmets limit vision, and muffle sound. I wish people weren't so sue-happy. Thanks to people like that, we're limited as to how we can track our cars.
    As the individual lining up on the track, are you not assuming full responsibility for what happens at that point? Why does someone always need to be sued in the case of a mishap? If you don't think the track is safe, don't line up. It's like people are angry they have to use their decision-making skills, and would rather have a Judge either confirm, or deny their victim complexes.

    How often should you change your oil if you’re running like 4 autocross events a season? I have an Ap1 s2000 and it burns a good amount of oil (as all early Ap1s do) so I feel like every 3000 miles is good since I have to top off every 1000 miles. Whatya think?

    • @TedwardDrives
      @TedwardDrives  3 роки тому +1

      how hot do your temps get? Oil is designed to protect for a certain amount of time and load. Increasing load (heat) is what degrades oil fastest. If your temps only jump up a little above normal operating then you can pretty much send it for a normal 5k interval. I send my oil out to Blackstone for analysis to see if viscosity changes after track days. My lesson learned is that I was being a little too cautious by changing every track day.

      Porsche’s are a bit more track ready than a bmw. They hold up to heat a bit better than the bmws but if you were really trying to beat on the car for 20 full minutes you’d like need some upgrades to help it breathe and cool brakes

      Porsche make fast road cars, and yes, they are capable of relatively short periods on track, more so than many cars. But they are not track cars. They still require extra care and attention for extended periods of high speed driving, hard braking and cornering.
