- George Cziffra preformed Chopin-Polonaise Fantasie Op.61 live in Hungary 1983 03. 17. **Gyorgy Cziffra born: November 5, 1921 Budapest - Hungary and died: January 15, 1994 - Morsang-sur-Orge (Senlis), France. The noted Hungarian-born French pianist, Georges [originally György Cziffra. He became noted at the age of 5, improvising on popular tunes in bars and circuses. His teachers at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest included Ernő Dohnányi. His education was interrupted by World War II, when he served in the Hungarian army. After the war he continued his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy with Ferenczi, but was once more distracted from music when he was arrested in 1950 for his rebellious political views, and was held under forced labour. He was released from jail in 1953, but was again endangered by the abortive Hungarian revolt in 1956. In 1956, convinced that he could have no peace under Communist rule, on the eve of the Hungarian insurrection and after a stunning account of Béla Bartók's second piano concerto (EMI References), György Cziffra escaped with his wife (Soleilka - of Egyptian origin) and son to Vienna where his recital at the Brahmsaal caused a sensation. News of this event reached The New Yorker. His Paris debut the following year caused a furore - his London debut at the Royal Festival Hall in Franz Liszt's first concerto and Hungarian Fantasy similarly. His meteoric career continued with concerts throughout Europe and debuts at the Ravinia Festival (Grieg and F. Liszt concertos with Carl Schuricht) and Carnegie Hall New York with Thomas Schippers. He always performed with a large leather wristband, as a memento of his years in labour. In 1968 he became a naturalised French citizen. In 1973 he founded the St.-Frambourg Royal Chapel Foundation in Senlis, France to assist young musicians and artists. He died in Senlis, 72 years old, from a heart attack resulting from series of complications from lung cancer. ** György Cziffra was best known for his interpretations of works of the Romantic repertoire. He is most known for his brilliant and extravagant recordings of Franz Liszt's virtuoso works. Cziffra had a remarkable virtuoso technique and was a master at improvisation.

As I listened to Cziffra it occurred to me that the performer must choose which aspect of this work will dominate - the fantasy element or the polonaise. Prior to this clip I had listened to Kapell's performance, also from a live concert. Kapell came down hard on the polonaise side. Cziffra very much embraces the fantasy element.

J'ai eu la chance d'assister à l'un de ses récitals . C'est un des plus Grands, surtout lorsqu'il interprétait les rapsodies Hongroises
de Liszt. Un interprète extraordinaire et inoubliable Il se produisait à la Grange de Meslay près de Tours , où il donnait également des cours .
I greatly admire the great artist s genius..i think today he is one of the UNJUSTLY too-little remembered GREAT pianist...with our obsession with "contests" or even the late 20-th or 21st c. "veterans" and ''BIG NAMES" ....such as Martha argerich...Uchida...perahia...etc. etc.etc ..imo , CZIFFRA ..like horowitz was among the VERY last of the great tradition of Virtuoso-artists that n ot only had enormous span and knowledge of the repertoire...but were directly coming in the tradition of performer/composer/improvisers...few of which exist now...except really in JAZZ..

WHAT I love about his manner of playing is how SUPPLE his mechanics really is ...WITHOUT today s habit among so many , of waving hand and arms around to "relax" the playing...or SHOW it (as if they are all still playing in front of their teachers when taught "relax your hands this way and that....the phrasing goes this way and that" which i find extremely annoying...) and remember that he IS playing in a stadium size arena...but plays mechanics-wise ...actually VERY simply...without arms and hands gesticulations...
yep years of hard labor in russia has given him iron strength, but his playing has not lost a tinge of its suppleness, I admire him and the wonderful piano built hands he was gifted with and the same hands he spent his sweat and heart on polishing

Don't like this performance he always had to add an extra base note or something his idiosyncrasies annoy means if he was better than the composer
@@ciararespect4296 Because you do not know about the life of Mr. Liszt and Chopin. Liszt's wife appraised CHOPIN's play and masterpieces not her husband's!!....but LISZT WAS great CHOPIN was not bigger in any way than Franz Liszt.

Monsieur Remy BERRIOT, quelle honte. Cziffra était un artiste qui pensait ce qu'il jouait, sa générosité à travers ses interprétations mouvementés et tourmentés sont l'esprit même du 19ème siècle, il n'y a pas plus de spécialiste pour maîtriser un style qu'un autre, mais posséder un don et un instinct musical qu'apparement vous ne posséder pas pour décoder son message... Je vous invite à vous cultiver sur ses interprétations plus ancienne et de différent compositeur avant de juger un Personnage que vous ne pourrait jamais égaler. A cette période il a perdu son fils, et son jeu plus franc et plus lourd, ( je vous l'explique pour rafraichir vos oreilles d'amateur ) ne cherche pas à prouver quoi que ce soit, et moins à vous. Mais il y a de la profondeur, décortiquez la vidéo, vous ne comprendrez pas, le message n'est pas pour vous, vous êtes trop petit face à la musique. Etes-vous pianiste pour vous mesurer à une telle critique ? Interprétez vous cette pièce avec un esprit poétique comme vous le dite ? Savez-vous comment Chopin l'a écrite, quel est son message ? Pas d'accord avec votre commentaire. Cziffra se foutait des critiques, ça ne l'a jamais empêcher de se démarquer et d'être inégalable. Si vous n'aimez pas cette interprétation, allez voir ailleurs, mais passez-vous de tous commentaire honteux sans connaître le Grand Pianiste du 20ème siècle, Georges Cziffra.
Greg Humb, non seulement vous avez le melon, mais vous méprisez ceux qui ne pensent pas comme vous, honte à vous j'allais dire si je voulais jouer dans la même 'basse' cour ! Cziffra a produit des interprétation fulgurantes et absolument géniales c'est clair, c'est à mon sens l'un des seuls à pouvoir jouer rubato avec finesse tout en conservant une grande vélocité. Mais non il n'est pas LE maître de Chopin, ne vous en déplaise et je rejoins ici l'opinion de Remy quant à cette interprétation inégale qui nous est ici donnée d'entendre. Mais j'arrêterai là, car vous avez votre idole, et il n'est rien de plus impossible que de convaincre une personne qui idolâtre sans douter ...
Je rajouterai enfin qu'aucun pianiste plus ou moins contemporain, excepté peut-être Horowitz ne joue comme le jouait les romantiques du 19ème siècle, il n'est qu'à écouter un Francis Planté ou encore un Raoul Koczalski pour s'en convaincre

Je trouve cela déplaisant : on peut avoir des avis différents et échanger courtoisement, enfin il me semble.

on voit bien que Cziffra était un spécialiste de Liszt et non de Chopin : on ne ressent pas d'esprit poétique dans l'interprétation de cette polonaise fantaisie; et pourtant ! Elle mérite mieux que ça....

Le problème, Monsieur, c'est, vous l'écrivez vous-même, que vous voyez. Peut-être feriez-vous mieux d'écouter même si je doute que vous ayez la capacité d'entendre.
Monsieur, c'est l'une des meilleures interprétations que j'ai rencontrées jusqu'à présent... peut-être que vous êtes partisan d'un pianiste en particulier, mais c'est certainement l'une des meilleures interprétations qui soient.
