I appreciate the professor’s deep love of the art form, but some of his responses during this beef particularly with Euphoria, prove that no matter how schooled you are in the subject of hip-hop, if you are not culturally of us, you will still miss a lot of nuance. He is trying to articulate an African American art form through the framework of his expertise - European literature - but that framework will always be limited. If Kendrick is a gatekeeper, this is why.

This song was Kendrick preparing to nuke Drake and warn him to stop before it was too late
Sampling Al Green also has a Drake connection. Drake's great uncle Willie Mitchell was the vice president of Hi Records, owner of Royal Studios, and produced the majority of Al Green's 60's and 70's albums.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe Drake's father Dennis is also one of the studio musicians on that track.😁
Hey professor, AVAA! The most interesting factor to me is the single art and how it ties in to the theme of “you have a mole within your team”. If you reverse search the image, it doesn’t appear on the internet. This seems to be a glove Drake owns, and by using it as album art Kendrick is showing how close the leaks OVO has are to Drake. There’s also the easy symbolism of OJ and the black glove, and Michael Jackson with the single glove. Finally, in the first few lines Kendrick mentions buying a yacht… I think he is implying that Lil Yachy, Drakes friend and known ghostwriter, may be the mole… or he at least wants to make Drake paranoid about that. Really fun stuff!

As it turns out, not an addendum; a preface.
The cover art is a picture of Drake’s Maybach Gloves, while it doesn’t seem significant it’s a pic that was never posted online or shared to anybody which further reinforces the idea Kendrick is trying to tell Drake that there is a mole in his entourage who has been potentially leaking sensitive info to him.

Raphael the Archangel, the saint of healing. Kendrick says i can either heal you or give you art. He's talking about two different Raphaels. Also 6:16 could be a reference to Proverbs 6:16, the things God detests, or Revelations 6:16. Kendrick is on a different level. In yhe beginning of the song he says he would rather buy a yacht than a phantom, possibly referencing Lil yachty aka one of Drakes ghost writers. So many layers.

I'm conflicted on this. On the one hand I totally agree, but on the other there is something about the speed of the beef that actually makes quick videos feel necessary to be in the spirit of the moment. Not sure what I'm going to do.

Just thought I'd point out some couple of details which might have been missed.
1. The album Cover is a picture of a 1 of 1 Maybach glove made exclusively for Drake which implies for kendrick to have a pic someone from Drake's team must have sent it to him , that ties back to the can't trust those around you theme.
2 . The intro about Survival is a ref to a drake song where he talks about surviving the streets and that intro line was followed with something liar.

Also I feel like the saying n word stuff was more about how drake treats and sees the black community and blackness rather than his biracial identity. It’s like Candace Owen’s maybe shouldn’t say the N word either, but she not biracial .
Raphael isn’t necessarily the Renaissance painter. More likely to be the archangel considering how shot through Kendrick’s rhymes are with Christian Black Liberation Theology
Its funny i never viewed this as Kendrick reluctantly putting on the savior mantle before. I had thought of it as him feeling like he has to prove who he is to himself by going through with this. Both views have him feeling hesitant but after the subjects of the follow up tracks i can absolutely see him picking up the savior identity again
I think Kendrick is linking his three songs together to say I can take all of your styles and do them better than you. Like that is the better club song, euphoria when you want to go after the battle rap crowd. And 6:16 is for the lyrical crowd. I predict the final song that will drop will explicitly ties that theme together, where we can use each song as a reference to how he is better than Drake. This is a high brow battle

I've also seen people claim it was a reference to Proverbs 6:16 (about God hating Drake's character flaws), Corinthians 6:16 (about lying with prostitutes, i.e. Drake's baby mama), and/or Luke 6:16 (about Judas Iscariot)
I like seeing it as Jeremiah 6:16, too. It pretty much says "god told you to walk the right path and you picked the wrong one."
And since its 6:16 *in LA* i like to think kendrick is also telling Drake to watch his step when he visits LA

I think another major component of this particular piece of the puzzle is that this is HIP HOP.. this is traditional soul sample shit just straight spitting the whole way through. This is for the purists. This is for the east coast old heads.. it’s him rooting himself even deeper in the culture while checking another box. “I can do this better than you too” it’s him activating another section of the ground around him and if you look at his whole body of work in this battle as a whole , it’s more important than people think. It’s psychological horror. The song drains you and you can hear the weight and burden of it in the cadence and delivery of Kendricks voice all backed up by the repeating piano notes that keep you unsettled and uncomfortable. It’s a masterpiece and probably the most impactful diss track of all time.

Breaking down the Toosie slide reference: To start the song is named after an Atlanta choreographer...
@ 8:20 you mention Kendrick's line "you can't toosie slide out of this one"... for further reference, Drake's song Toosie slide ( @ the 2 : 35 mark) features a picture of P.Diddy, which is ironic. Knowing the history there, Diddy in 2014 slapped/punched Drake over the 0-100 beat he used that was originally for Diddy. Yet in 2020 your dancing in a room w/ a picture of Diddy on the wall in 2020, it's weird to idolize your aggressor. And in Toosie slide, for a summer jam was rather dark. In it Drake exclaims the dance is a reference to sliding on his op's when the timing is convenient. That they'll spin the block in the summer if they have to. He references his enforcer (Chubbs - Drakes head of security + also failed sports bar owner), & others as being willing to do the work for him...
So fast forward... you can't toosie slide out of this one, is an ominous warning to Drake, that Drake fails to take seriously. However, Drake lacks self-awareness, & none of the "yes men" around him have the depth to grasp the reality Aubrey faces. He's basically telling Drake that this "fade" or fight, is for him.... that there will be fireworks just like in the music video. In contrast like Diddy, Drake has a history of bullying verbally women who reject him (ex; Serena, Rhianna, Meg The Stallion. Thinking critically, even Drake is facing the prospect of a Diddy-esque video release via the hands of EbonyPrince2k24 that could potentionally end his career. In the "First Person Shooter" video at the 3 : 38 mark Drake enters an elevator full of dogs, who's collars all bear womens names (b-words he owns)... the other allegation Drake (like Diddy) faces is that he's tied to a sex trafficking ring... hence why in "Not Like Us" - Kendrick mentions Baka, the OVO affiliate who was charged w/ sex trafficking.... in Meet The Grahams - "They be streamlinin' victims all inside of they home and callin' 'em tender (tinder). it's alleged that Drake's personnel screen the women he sleeps with (escort business front). Its alleged that Drake's baby mother former soft core pornstar was also a celebrity escort (which is why Drake will never marry her... its alleged ASAP Rocky hit it first)
Irony is in Toosie slide, Drake references black leather glove, not the one with sequins... "its an OJ metaphor"... hence why Kendrick dropped Euphoria on 6/16. Not only is that Fathers Day, Tupacs Birthday, a metaphor for implied bible verses (Corinthians/Isaiah/Proverbs/Revelations)... its also the day Nicole Simpson was buried. Hence why the cover art on Meet The Grahams was of an MMG glove that Drake owned. Its shade at Drake for saying he'd essentially get away with murder or other things, because of his celebrity as implied in the "Toosie Slide" video.
Sooo when Kendrick says you can't Toosie slide your way out of this one, he's basically setting Drake up for Meet The Grahams, & Not Like Us in a subtle way that only Drake should understand. It makes the history lesson in "Not Like Us" resonate that much louder. Drake is a cultural appropriater... Aubrey Columbus turns a dance in Atlanta into one of his best dance records, but doesn't put the choreographer on, or anyone from Atlanta in the music video. He could have flown people to his mansion, or shot the music video in Atlanta.... which is why the "culture vulture" jacket is so fitting for Drake. He's a colonzing settler in hiphop that lacks cultural awareness.

The song was him saying multiple things. The things he believe in. His power. His morals. He praises and thanks God for his life. He doesn’t want to do it for sure but needs to and if he does, he appreciates the lessons in it. He compares himself to the angel Raphael and the artist of the same name and everything that his mind is able to comprehend and create is a gift from God.
Then proceeds to address Drake after addressing himself in the mirror. And like you said, Drake doesn’t have any of what his has. No friends. No God. Just snakes in his camp and he’s alone.

I understood what you meant when you said gatekeeper. Just when thinking in today's context it's a negative association, so folks get stuck with the feeling of the word. Just thinking about the feelings that are associated with words. If you were to supplement the word "gatekeeper" with "guardian" maybe it would be easier to digest. But also following your thought process maybe the feeling is a combination of "guardian" (in action) but also "champion" in mindset.?!?!

I think although Drake cannot be kicked out completely, the fact that Kendrick says the culture does not like or respect him. Will he continue using cosplaying as a black American now that he has been called out? Now that everyone knows that the accent is fake and he has imaginary ties to the mob will he continue talking about that in his music. Another element that Kendrick alludes to in this new song is that Drake's does not come across as someone that is maturing and growing at all.
I mean it's been a running joke in the Rap world for a while now. Idk if that would stop his popularity. I think the corny slave bars on "Family Matters" would have a bigger impact.
