Hello peanut gallery! I am totally addicted to crumb quilting! Tonight I showed you all the piecing I have done so far and I also made my first 6x6 inch block! Super excited! Thanks for hanging out with me! Lots more coming your way soon! xoxo Here is the playlist so you can get caught up: tinyurl.com/y9zcg63f
I am enjoying your segment so much, its fantastic, so looking forward to seeing what you keep making. I am going to try this. Your blocks look like abstract art, wonderful..looks fun.
Darlene Michaud I really enjoy the crum adventure. Can't wait too see it all put together as a quilt. I always threw out my scraps. Oops. Lola Preibisch
I love your videos - YOU are adorable and I love your voice and beautiful hands. You are an inspiration with all your clever tricks and tips. Brilliant!
Hello Darlene, I just subscribed. It is rather serendipitous that I'm watching your channel. I was cleaning my sewing room a couple days ago and looking at my scraps thought, "What if I just randomly sew pieces together? Is that a thing?" Lol! And then your channel was in my news feed. I lost sleep watching. I haven't sewn anything yet but I am definitely going to give this a try. What a great way to use up scraps. Crumb quilts, of course! Thank you for making this series.
Loving finally having something to do with all my scraps. Love that I don’t have to sit and perfectly cut pieces and plan everything out. Quilting without to much thinking that looks great! Thanks, I’m addicted.
When you were talking about throwing away that little strip - or saving it forever - remember, that's a pretty good size for when you make the fabric twine. That particular video is the one that led me to your channel to begin with. I have plans for almost every fabric strip or sliver - hah! Enjoying this series. Thanks.
Oh Darlene! Where have you been all my quilting life? ;) Somewhere deep in the cavern of my sewing room, I have a bin (actually a drawer in one of my plastic storage towers) FULL of little crumbs I couldn't bring myself to throw away. Hubby would giggle at me every time I added to that drawer...I would just tell him that all those little pieces add up to x amount of yards and yardage costs money. You are SOOO going to help me justify my little collection and he's just gonna have to swallow his words when he sees the blocks you and I create! Now if I could just get to that bin (so many other projects are keeping me busy right now). Love you, love what you're doing! Keep being you and keep on stitching!
Glad you posted this since I can't sleep....love to discover how to make a "crumb quilt" and will start one, perhaps this morning. I look forward to your posts. 👍😊
DARLENE. You're crumbs are giving me such vivid ideas. I love how jubilant you are making the blocks. It makes me think of a city scape seeing your finished 6" block. I cant wait to dig into mine. Thanks for feeding the addiction. Love your channel.
I was worried about it being too soon but I was like... I need to talk about this! LOL This might end up being a late night series. If I'm going to lose sleep, I might as well work! lol
Darlene Michaud Yes, please always share what your doing. I can't wait for your next video. The anticipation is super tough when it's been awhile. Keep em coming sweetcheeks, YOU ROCK!!!!!
I hope you make this a late night series as I have many sleepless nights. Older I get less sleep. I love this series so much you have such a cute personality. You have no idea how much I appreciate your videos. Thank you Darlene🌺
Darlene tell Skylar that I absolutely LOVE her Box she made for you in #2 of your QUILT CRUMB series. I love how simple you make quilting techniques. God Bless You, Carol
What I love is that you have such a good time! So many quilters are so intense about getting everything exact. You are so creative, and you make me feel like l could do it too!
Love this idea! Love your enthusiasm! I have an idea for all those tiny crumbs that are too small to sew into the blocks. You could get a clear plastic Christmas bulb from a craft store and fill it with the tiny bits and pieces and either save them for Christmas or hang them in your sewing room.
Just realized watching your first crumb quilt . . thats the way i always did my backings for my quilts. Was neat cuz everybody had a piece of someone elses quilt on the back. Love crumb quilts. Ty so much for letting me know that i was doing it right after all. lol
This is so colourful, really lovely, I haven't been sewing that long so haven't got a scrap stash as yet ..... so off to the charity shops I go lol. Thanx Darlene x
I'm very new sewing....and don't have many crumbs at all. But, I have been practicing and taking the little I have and have been cutting them down. I think this is a great idea. I don't know how to quilt, but I think I might learn. This is so much fun watching Darlene teach this. It should be a creative venture and not taken too seriously. :-)
I would be willing to sit with you for that several hrs! I've never heard of crumb quilts before! This has been very exciting. Thanks so much for sharing! LOVE you and subbed to your channel. Hugs, B
Love this idea! I just inherited a ton of scraps of all sizes and started making some crumb blocks. Wish I could share them here so you can see how you inspired me. Thanks!
Hello Darlene, I really enjoy your video, learned so much and started my first quilt, but really love these crumb squares, I've decided to use this idea to make children's bags for the orphanages we send to...
I just found your site. I love it. I started watching and can't stop. I have learned a few things and I thank you for that. Now I am thinking where did I put all my scraps ? I Cant wait to try crumb quilting. Mary Ann
Hi Darlene, Being more creative is part of my new years resolution, but I was really nervous to start! I'm definitely feeling more confident now, looks like you have so kuch fun with your skills, you are my new creative role model 💜💜💜
Darlene this was my first time to see you love-love. I have gobs of material that I would to get rid wish I could get it to you. Can't wait to see you again.
I think I commented on another crum video i made two already 21/22. Those will make a beach tote. And im also going to keep going and then see what i decide to go with. Size wise. But i love what you are getting us addicted too!! 😂
3:46 am I discovered your chanel hours ago and I am addicted to your videos can't wait to try some of these ideas out tomorrow oh wait I mean today I am a beginner ( as in I started sewing with a machine a few days ago ) so let's see how it goes
saving scraps from the landfill is great! I know it's part of the whole point of making crumb quilting. But I find myself also taking new yardage and cutting it up. I wanted to ask if this was okay. And then I thought.... Really?
Really excited too. Excited to use the crumbs my friend just sent me. Like someone else commented, can't wait for the next.episode. How long did you stay up after you said goodbye?
I am loving this series actually finished a block quilt I've been putting off for months after the first vid. Dare I try a crumb quilt??? Btw love your hair in this vid!
I am trying to decide on my size for my blocks but I am also having so much fun "crumbing". Do you have a small rotating mat? Makes cutting your blocks so much easier. Thanks again for inspiring me!
Hi Darlene, I really love your crumb quilt adventure. I am about to make one myself. I already made some scrap blocks but they are not so tiny. I have two questions: Why do you make blocks of a particular size? Can't you just make bigger blocks and sew them together whenever you feel like it? And why don't you use the selvages? They would add an interesting and fun detail on your blocks. You can also save the selvages for a special project. Greetings from the Netherlands, Annemie Rook :-)
Hi Darlene - I'm a newer viewer, in love with what you do and how you do it. You've got me making stuff in a whole new way. I was telling my husband about you! :-) I'm excited about this whole crumb pieces thing - I tried doing this sort of blind a couple years ago and my results were not pretty. Now I feel like I have some tricks and ideas for doing it way better. Question: you comment that this is something like doing crazy quilts - which I thought this would end up being. Is there a difference between crumbs and crazies? That sounds funny, don't it... I can google it but it's kind of more interesting to ask you first! And thanks for the quick posting of episode 2 - like Jo Enamorado I've been antsy to see more.
There is a big difference between crumb qults and crazy quilts. Mainly the size of the pieced used. Crumb quilts are a way to use up the tiniest of pieces. But now it's becoming popular to make the blocks in a way that you get to use big pieces but make them look smaller in the end. Crazy quilts are generally worked in the round so you need some decent size pieces. If you are just sewing big pieces together but not in the round, then you are making a scrappy quilt. Crumb quilts are tiny pieces and worked in all directions. Stick with me as I have many more of all of the above on the way!
Hello! I Love this! Maybe you get to my question in later videos but I was just wondering as you are saying you are going to make blocks, if you couldn't just keep crumb quilting the smaller pieces into bigger and bigger pieces until you had a whole crumb quilt top without making the blocks?
Go ahead and try it. Then you'll soon know why that would be a monumental pain in the ass. lol Seriously, think about it. Do you really want to constantly have a huge block under your machine? And you would either need to cut very long wonky strips or you'd have to piece together very long strips to have enough length to attach to your ever growing long sides. Or you'd have to make a puzzle and top stitch everything, which you could do, but again, at some point you have a shitload of fabric under the arm of your machine. Best way to learn is to just try whatever you think up. Please try it and if you find a way to make it easy, let me know.
You can just keep adding but it gets to make the puzzle unless you do top stitching to connect them, which is an option I'll be talking about at some point.
i think sashing really defines the quilt in that it determines a colourway. i have done a lot of crumb quilts and have found the crumb blocks need definition. just my thoughts.
I can't seem to think outside the box about this sewing dilemma so am hoping you have a clever idea. I have an assortment of material squares all sizes and categories (dogs, horses, wizard of oz, food, etc) and I want to use them in quilts or something? Can't bear to cut them up as they're all so clever and cute but what can you do when the sizes are all over the place?
You can think of them as big crumbs and use the same method I show by just sewing them together. You might have to trim a bit to create traight edges. Or you could cut them into squares or rectangles and add various width borders to each block to make them the same size then sew the blocks together. There are many more options, can't name them all. Just do what feels right and it will work!
What is sashing? Like a border in between? I will probably find out in another video, right? Geeze, now I want to dig out my sewing machine and crumb quilt! LOL! I have not used a sewing machine in over 11 years!
If you can think it, you can do it! I think. lol If you mean just make a huge gigantic block first then cut it up into many blocks, yes, you could do that. But it gets harder to put the puzzle together as the block gets big. And if you did make a big block, that could just be the entire quilt to. No need to cut it. Is that what you mean? I'm tired... because I'm crumbing until I drop. lol
Yes, I guess you could just sew everything together and have that be the quilt. Why didn't I think of that? LOL But I was thinking more of the first part, making a big block (not big enough for an entire quilt) and then cutting it into smaller ones. I think I like crumb quilting the best and you can have so much fun just piecing crumbs together like a jig jaw puzzle.
Not 6 ft by 6 ft. No way! My blocks are 6 x 6 inches. And I plan on making a little quilt. At least that's the plan so far. We won't know what I make until I get there. lol
i am an impatient anything crafty therefore my work does not look great. i want my quilt or bag whatever i do to look professional have you any advice?
Best thing you can do to look at your just okay job and make that the new professional look! There are no standards to follow but your own. An okay job is more than good enough! And with practice, you can increase your own personal level of perfection.
thank you Darlene, I've done crazy quilts. making laundry bags, baby quilts etc but this was about 15 years ago, still have my husqvarna sewing machine, now i seriously want to do good work, i have been buying fabrics and tools and about to start but i don't know what to start with.
Hello, I would like to understand the difference between CRUMB Quilt and CRAZY Quilt ...... I confess that I do not see the difference ....! Thanks for your videos .... Fran from France
Well, it looks like a lot of fun and I have just organized my sewing area and I have a huge bin of "treasures". Gonna sit down and give it a try. Sashes or no sashes, I'll have fun!
Sometimes I love the look of sashing. Other times I love it more without. It's just so hard to make the choice!!! With my crumb blocks, I'm leaning toward no sashing. I kind of want it to look like a jumbled mess. lol Have fun with yours!!! I hope to do some crumbing tonight.
Hello peanut gallery! I am totally addicted to crumb quilting! Tonight I showed you all the piecing I have done so far and I also made my first 6x6 inch block! Super excited! I am so enjoying this series. Someone gave me a big bag of scraps and now I know what to do with them. Thank you!
Thank you because I was working on the craziest quilt ever it’s been put to the side. And yes you’ve encouraged me indeed.

DARLENE. You're crumbs are giving me such vivid ideas. I love how jubilant you are making the blocks. It makes me think of a city scape seeing your finished 6" block. I cant wait to dig into mine. Thanks for feeding the addiction. Love your channel.

Fantastic. Just love this idea. Have made your wonky blocks into a cute girly quilt. Used prarie points instead of binding. Yay.
Just realized watching your first crumb quilt . . thats the way i always did my backings for my quilts.

I just went and purchased the fat 16 ths from you on ebay. I don't have a big enough stash of scrapes to do this. looks like so much fun.

saving scraps from the landfill is great! I know it's part of the whole point of making crumb quilting. But I find myself also taking new yardage and cutting it up. I wanted to ask if this was okay. And then I thought.... Really?
I just saw your doppelgänger yesterday, here in Memphis 😃...same hair cut and all!

Thank you for sharing your nowledge ☺
Love this so much. Thanks
I'm from the uk ,and I do love this idea ,how do you go about backing your block ,this is the one thing I find the hardest to do ,thanks b ✂️✂️
(Wondering if this qualifies you being fabric hoarder enabler) LOL! I love this series so much!
I am trying to decide on my size for my blocks but I am also having so much fun "crumbing". Do you have a small rotating mat? Makes cutting your blocks so much easier. Thanks again for inspiring me!
I don't have one and not sure I care to have one. I try very hard to not have much stuff. lol
Hi Darlene, I really love your crumb quilt adventure. I am about to make one myself. I already made some scrap blocks but they are not so tiny. Make blocks any size you want and the use selvages if you want. There are no rules! You are free to experiment.
L O V E this ... I have LOTS of tiny pieces of fabric, people tell me to throw them away, I say NOOOO ... Thanks for sharing !!!!
wow.. i love it💖💖💖💖💖💖
Hi Darlene - I'm a newer viewer, in love with what you do and how you do it. You've got me making stuff in a whole new way. I was telling my husband about you! :-) I'm excited about this whole crumb pieces thing - I tried doing this sort of blind a couple years ago and my results were not pretty. Darlene Michaud
Great way to very easily use up scraps!!!! Love it. Thank you!!
Love love love it!!!! XOXO
Once you make your fabric do you cut them straight or do you cut them so your patchwork is angled? Guess I need to watch the entire series .....
Best way to learn is to just try whatever you think up. Please try it and if you find a way to make it easy, let me know.
QUESTION: Do you have to make blocks, or can you just keep adding on until you make the size you want? I'm enjoying this series. :)
You can just keep adding but it gets to make the puzzle unless you do top stitching to connect them, which is an option I'll be talking about at some point.
i think sashing really defines the quilt in that it determines a colourway. i have done a lot of crumb quilts and have found the crumb blocks need definition. just my thoughts.
so cool!
Thanks for this video. I need these ideas.
please miss Darlene I love your shows but I love your sewing machine more ! Can you share the company that makes them and where I could purchase one?
I hope I don't lose the series. I'm only on #2.
great video!
i am going to try this
I can't seem to think outside the box about this sewing dilemma so am hoping you have a clever idea.
Do love!!!!
What is sashing? Like a border in between? I will probably find out in another video, right? Geeze, now I want to dig out my sewing machine and crumb quilt! LOL! I have not used a sewing machine in over 11 years!
Quick question: Could you sew all the crumbs together and THEN cut 6 inch blocks?
I think I like crumb quilting the best and you can have so much fun just piecing crumbs together like a jig jaw puzzle.
love love love this series. fabulous and please chat with us.
will you be putting the blocks together to do a large quilt only i read wrong i thought you was doing 6ft by 6ft
Can u use mixed typed of fabric?
Yes you can! That makes it a crazy crumb quilt. lol You are allowed and encouraged to try all kinds of things. Have fun with it!
I would like to see how you chain piece!
Pretty sure I showed that in episode 1.
Darlene Michaud ok thank you!
And I will be showing it again!
Hello,
I would like to understand the difference between CRUMB Quilt and CRAZY Quilt ...... I confess that I do not see the difference ....!
Thanks for your videos .... Fran from France
I explained the differences in this video: ua-cam.com/video/zeyM6ST0zbk/v-deo.html
Does Skylar watch your videos? Just curious...she's a cutie & you two have great fun....I miss seeing her.
I've just discovered your fab video. What a very clever idea thank you. Hope you didn't wake your mum?
I would sash otherwise you'll have seams on top of seams and that is a problem.
That is not a problem at all. There are no rules!
Just finished a block. It really is fun. I'll watch you again to see how u speed things up a bit
