- Hello! Welcome to Sunbeam Fabric Art. Do you like shortcuts as much as I do? If so, here's a quick and easy way to make a crazy quilt block.
There are lots of ways to make a crazy quilt block, but this is a method I use when I want to speed along and not think too much. It can be pretty freeing to just sit down at the machine and sew with no set plan in place, just a general idea and some fabric! It's super fun. The sky is the limit. These blocks can be stitched together as is, or sashed, or borders added. In addition, many crazy quilts have lots of fun decorative stitching or embellishments like lace. These can be added a block at a time or when the entire quilt block is finished. Use your imagination and have lots of fun dreaming up your next project!
The final size on my block is 8.5" x 8.5", so it will finish to 8 inches square.

Oh my goodness! I am HOOKED!! I just made my first block but I want to do these all day long!! Thank you!
You are so welcome! ☀️🤩
Another way to use up some scraps is to put them together for the backing of your quilt. My granddaughter just did this and it turned out fantastic! Plus she saved the money of not having to buy more fabric for the backing!
That's a great idea! Thanks!
Def a fun block to tackle Mt Scrapmore! Why not invest in a camera stand to stabilize the view? Love the peacock feather!!
Thank you! Better camera work ahead!
Yes, it looks like doing everything one-handed is quite limiting and sometimes awkward.
But glad you did the video anyway! Very informative and just what I needed! Thank you for all the tips and tricks. ❤
Old telephone books are great & free. Old seeing pattern tissue Is also great - op shops are a good source if you need to buy
Hi Helen! Sorry but there are hardly any telephone books given out these days! Just FYI. 😥
Thanks for the suggestion 💡☀️
I have made a lot of crazy quilts. I use a thin loosely woven drapery lining type fabric for a foundation instead of the paper. I do not remove this layer as you must for paper.
I used an old sheet once for a foundation! I cut a bunch of 10 inch squares and used that for my foundation. I might do a video like that sometime 😃
@@sunbeamfabricart I I've did that also. I don't throw away old sheet. I have a stack of 10" squares ready now for when I get ready to make another crazy quilt.
Love the video, but you need to keep the camera still so we don't get so sea sick with the movement.
Thanks for the comment, noted!
Camera needs to be on a tripod or similar device so you can use both hands in video. Your samples would look better. None of us could do a great job with just one hand.
I have been light-headed and Daisy for the last 3 days. Inner ear I guess. I can't stand to watch it sorry also when showing the block please don't wave it back and forth in the air. Please don't be offended sweetheart just food for thought thank you
Beautiful quilt block a work of art. ❤
Great job doing it all one-handed!
Just the filming! 🎥. That was one of my early videos, and now thank goodness I have a tripod! ☀️💕
Wow. I love those fabrics, prints and colors. Your block is beautiful.
Glad you like them! That fabric is lovely! Wish I had more!
My husband's grandmother used to make crazy quilt tops. I loved them. I never watched as she actually made them though so your video was just what I've longed for. Thank you!!
I'm glad! I had one in my teens but it got lost in a move. I love them!💛
I just been making crazy quilt for placemats. I didn’t use paper but, I have one more to make and I will try it. Definitely will do this for a square. I love this method. I like the way everyone of them are the same but different. ❤❤❤
Thank you! ☀️
Beautiful fabric with very nice movement. I love the teals & blues. I don't have much fabric with white in them. I love jeweltones. You did a great job & excellent outcome. I bought a paper piecing booklet w/hearts & made a sewing chair pad.
Thanks so much for your nice comment! Jewel tones are my favorite as well!
That looks like so much fun… Something I look forward to trying. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for watching!
Bonjour ! Un pouce pour vous encourager … très bel assortiment de tissus ! Un océan nous sépare c’est sûrement la cause de l’impression de mal de mer😂😂😂😂. Vous allez à l’essentiel, cela me plaît. À bientôt, Régine 🇫🇷
Merci pour votre gentil commentaire. :-) Bonne journée
Yea!!! I’m glad someone else crazy quilts like me!!!❤️I have been making crazy quilts this way! I trim up my edges cause they come in handy for those pesky tiny spots towards the edges!!!
I am so glad you enjoyed it! Have a great day.
Thanks a lot , it’s very inspiring!🌸🌺
You’re welcome 😊
Enjoyable. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I like your style of crazy quilt block instructions.😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks!
I love your block.
Thank you so much! I appreciate it.
Just found your video from a year ago. This takes the mystery out of crazy patchwork!
Oh how cool! Glad you found it! Crazy quilts are so fun! ☀️❤️
Love this 😲 fast, easy and beautiful
Thank you! 😊
One handed crazy block , great job! I think I can certainly do it with two hands , thank you!
Ha! Indeed! Two hands is WAY better. Thanks for watching!
I hear you bless your heart she tried❤
Okay now because of you I'm going to be going crazy for a crazy quilt 🤪 L❤VE YOUR FABRICS TOO. Thank you lady.
Thanks Rhonnie! Have a nice day!
Great tutorial…thank you.

Thanks for watching!
Love your instruction and fabric selection for a wonderful block! 😊
Thank you so much!
Very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow 🤩 gorgeous ❤❤❤❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Very pretty color!
Thank you!☀️
Thanks for sharing ❤ I have soooooo many scraps.🎉
You are so welcome!
I used foundation with my old sheets once. For a pencil thin string. I don’t foundation with any thing else.
Foundation can be lots of things, cotton, muslin, paper, or none at all! Have fun with your sewing!☀️
Lovely! Ive been binge watching your videos and am re-inspired to do the crazy quilt block method again. Thank-you for sharing! Have a very creative week!
That's wonderful to hear! Have fun with it! Thanks for watching. Have a great day.
Keep them coming!!!❤...🤕
Definitely! 👍🏼💯
This is so very cool. I love the newsprint tip. Perfect for this. I have loads of scraps that i could use for this type of project. 😊 Thank you for sharing this with us.❤🍀
You are so welcome!☀️
that was fun to watch and inspiring - I enjoyed it -Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much! ☀️❤️. Glad you enjoyed!
Marvellous
I have so many, many scraps I have kept with something similar in mind, and I have a large roll of newsprint left over from when the grandkids were little - now they will come together...
( I told my son I could find a use for them)
That's great! Crazy blocks are SEW FUN! ☀️
What a great teaching job. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it! ☀️
Thanks. Very pretty.
Thank you so much!
Made me dizzy with so much movement....loved the quilt!
Thanks ! ☀️
TY! Nice, simple, easy to follow instructions, and very pretty too! I might just give it a go. I do have a question though - Do you find that the paper blunts the sewing needles quicker?
Thanks so much for watching! Go for it! And yes, paper blunts needles more quickly, like scissors. Have a great day!
I love the idea of thin paper. I learned this by cutting muslin. Paper will be so much better. Your fabrics are beautiful. Thank you. Can you send a link to the paper?
Thanks for your kind comment! It is available many places, and when I searched today, I found it comes in even larger sizes! GOODNESS! Here's the link to my google search, but if it is easier just type into google

Definitely need to use a tripod for your camera
Thank you so much Annette, I really really enjoyed watching you create that crazy quilt block. I’ve subscribed and given you a thumb’s up too. Please stay safe and well too
Thank you so much for subscribing! The reason I got into quilting in the first place was I wanted to make a crazy quilt! I am glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for the video, very well done. I love your fabrics, they are especially beautiful! I really like the dragonfly fabric, what brand is it? I would like to get some. By the way you have a very nice voice that is calming and not irritating.
Thanks Paula! i appreciate the feedback as I get my UA-cam channel started! I picked up the fabric on sale a while back, but it's still available here and there. It is "Luminosity Metallic Strips" by Deborah Edwards for Northcott. Have a wonderful day!
@@sunbeamfabricart OOOH! Thank you for the information! I am definitely going to look the fabric up!
Would love to watch but I just can't too much movement - but thanks for the video going to give this a try
Thanks for the comment! Definitely working on that! I hope your project is fun and simple! :-). Have a great day!
Super cute. ❤️🌺
Thank you! 🤗
I love this. You did a great job … especially while holding the camera with one hand. Do you have a video on how to assemble the blocks? Thank you!
Hi there! Thanks so much! ☀️☀️ I have a couple of crazy quilt videos. These particular blocks went into an orphan block project. I decided I wanted bigger blocks. Here's my crazy quilt playlist (to date!) ua-cam.com/play/PLNgJsWBvdLlGnrD30f9_-I5ziADLUg4DN.html. And here are two of my finished crazy quilts that I really like: ua-cam.com/video/H_TqLC0E4v0/v-deo.html. and ua-cam.com/video/hVAJmYVnqq8/v-deo.html. The second was given to a friend's daughter and she just loved it!
Very interesting blocks. Have yo try it. TFS
You're welcome!
Nice tutorial; love your fabrics! Perhaps it's already been suggested (I didn't read all of the comments), but if you cut your original piece of paper fmdown to 8 1/2" then BEFORE you rip off the paper, you can square up your block using the paper side of your square instead of fussing over whether you've got 8 1/2" on any side...just trim the fabric to match the edg of the paper and THEN rip off the paper.
Thanks for your kind comments! I find that the newsprint paper tends to shrink up a little bit, the more it gets stitched. So it doesn't quite stay the original size. To get the exact size consistently I always trim from the front of the fabric. This also allows for fussy cutting exactly where I want to cut (the dragonfly corner for example). Have a great day! ☀️
@@sunbeamfabricart- I totally get it now. I use a heavier weight paper so I haven't had that issue (yet), but I totally understand your logic now. Again, nice tutorial!
Fun blocks and when you held up your first block, I recognized all the beautiful peacock fabrics! I’m currently working on an “Around the World” using these very fabrics! I’ll probably have some scraps left over, so maybe I’ll make a few blocks.
Thanks for watching! It's BEAUTIFUL fabric!
I would love to see the quilt you made that gave you the scraps! Gorgeous fabrics and a nice block.
I actually made two grocery totes from a June Tailor Quilt As You Go Shopper Tote package! They are beautiful and I get lots of compliments! ☀️. Thank you!
My first time to find your channel. Very pretty block. The moving of the camera was hard for me, but the building of the block was a learning experience so I continued watching. I liked that you didn't just go around the block in order. I wasn't sure if that would work but I see that it does, so now I won't be shy about trying that. LOL
Welcome!☀️ I have a tripod now, so the videos are more stable since that time! I appreciate your comments!
Thank you for sharing - where did you get that FANTASTIC green fabric??
It is fantastic for sure! I had scraps left from this line: Luminosity by Deborah Edwards for Northcott. Thanks for watching!
I agree the green fabric is gorgeous❤
I love your method of making the crazy quilt block. Where can I buy the paper you used? Thanks for sharing. God bless.
Thanks so much! 💛💛💛. You can find that paper online anywhere, just look for newprint paper 8-1/2 x 11 size . But it comes in many sizes.
I use telephone book paper, it's free, tears easy.
That's awesome! ☀️
What if you cover the whole newsprint piece then cut your block from it. You will have crazy strips for another quilt.
Wow!! Great idea!!!
🙏
☀️
Why do a handheld when you have a tripod to hold the camera steady? One minute or less for an effective intro; yours is more than three minutes.
Thanks for your comment.☀️
Where do you buy that paper? Love this block, that camera work not so much!
Thank you! Here’s a link to the paper I normally use:
Pacon Plain Newsprint, 8 1/2" x... www.amazon.com/dp/B00A6WHOME?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Love that block, you’re color choices are so cool, ..you’re going to have to figure something better for your filming as I’m getting really dizzy
Thanks!
Im not understanding why you need to have the paper. Is it for stability ????
Paper isn't required. I like to use paper so I know how big to go and yes, to stabilize. Some folks like to use a muslin foundation. My very first quilt was a crazy quilt and I didn't use a foundation. ☀️
@@sunbeamfabricart Thanks for answering. I have just stumbled on to your channel. Enjoyed the videos
Where do you find the newsprint paper?
Hi Jean! Thanks for watching. I got a pack of 500 on Amazon. But you can get it other places. Just google search for 8 1/2 x 11 newsprint and you’ll be in business!! Today I discovered it also comes in BIGGER sizes!
You can get newsprint that is used for packing boxes. Try the moving supplies area at Lowe's.
I remember eagles times used to sell the end rolls. Not sure who paper is needed though.
I am a retired nursery school teacher and we went to our local news paper and asked for their “end of the roll”paper! They can’t run right to the end of it and just threw it out!
It was perfect and we just cut the size we needed for the children.
This might save you some money! 🥰
Great tip!☀️🌸
Love how you made this block. Although, you need an assistant to help you film.. makes me a little dizzy.
Thanks and yes, Indeed. I have some tripod "assistants" now :-) Thanks for watching, and hope to see you back soon.
Thanks for the video! Do you have a source for the paper?
You’re welcome! Just google search for newsprint paper. You’ll find some. It’s the consistency of kids writing paper.
@@sunbeamfabricart found it on the evil Amazon
Oh wow holding the camera in hand is not good😢. Sorry I nearly fell off the chair with inner ear problems to begin with...🤯 I don't know how to camera stand with cost but if at all possible please invest in one to help your viewers❤ LOL.... bless your heart. Thank you
Outstanding block.... I just love it. Really appreciated her tutorial..... The only problem I had was the shaky camera.
That was one of my first attempts!!! I do have a tripod now!!! 😂💯👍🏼🧵
Cuando se decide hacer un tutorial, lo más recomendable es conseguir quién sostenga la camara y grabe el tutorial, o conseguir un trípode o cualquier elemento que la sostenga. Es muy bueno el tutorial, pero el vídeo no lo es.
I so very much agree. This is hard to watch. I know cost is always a factor so it is hard if you arent able to afford it we the viewers appreciate it
Its awesome...such beautiful colors. Im making one
I would love to see this finished- I was wondering- what happens if you run out of this fabric? I’m new to this, thanks! Also, where do you get this newspaper?
Good day! ☀️. I gravitate towards scrappy so if I run out of one fabric I just pick something else. I very seldom plan out a crazy quilt block or a scrap project. Here's a link to the newsprint I'm using. Have fun with your sewing!
Newsprint
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A6WHOME/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Would it get to wonky if you pieced it without the newprint?
Oh that's a great question! It's totally optional, of course. I like to use a foundation because then I know how long the pieces need to be, and when to stop adding more pieces. But I have done 'improv' strip piecing too, without a foundation. Thanks for watching.
Good point about size of pieces! Thank you!
Was just trying to work out if you were a talented one handed quilter and then you mentioned holding the camera 🫣beautifully demonstrated
Thank you! I don't often film one-handed any longer, now that I have a good tripod. ☀️
Sorry, i suffer from sea sickness and tried, but couldn't watch. Forwarded to the end and it is a beautiful block.

Why would you make a crazy quilt on paper it can't be washed?
