- On a seemingly ordinary morning in the village of Mottram in Longdendale, Greater Manchester, tragedy unfolded that would send shockwaves through the United Kingdom. It was September 18th, 2012, when the routine patrol of two Greater Manchester Police officers, Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone, took a terrifying turn.
PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes didn't stand a chance as they responded to what they thought was a routine report of a burglary. The pair stepped out of their police van and walked up to the front door of a three-bed marionette, into a slaughter that was so gratuitous the shock still reverberates today.
Inside was one-eyed fugitive Dale Cregan - wanted for murdering two gangland rivals. Before the officers had even knocked on, the merciless killer burst through the door, shouted 'police' and unleashed a hail of bullets on the two unarmed officers, probationers who had only just joined Greater Manchester Police. He tossed a hand grenade at their dying bodies and then calmly handed himself in at the nearest police station.
This is the story of infamous British gangster and serial killer - Dale Cregan.

Cregan walked in calmly to a police station to admit to killing 2 police women. At trial he changed his plea to murder??? Have I misunderstood something here and stand corrected!

Even though he confessed when he attended the police station, he initially pleaded not guilty during the trial, only to change to guilty after putting the families of the officers through the horror of having to listen to what he did to their loved ones… he was just a scumbag and I hope he rots in jail

While not guilty on remand prisoners get extra privileges so they wait until going to crown court to plead guilty .

Although this incident was horrendous by any consideration, it is not the most grievous. In 1910 after the attempted robbery of a Jewellers shop in the City of London two Police Sergeants and a Police Constable were shot and murdered and two further officers were wounded. This was a precursor to the Sydney Street siege in which all those responsible were killed in a fire in the property they were occupying. A further incident of arguably more barbarity and inhuman callousness was the murder in 1966 of three plain-clothes officers in Shepherds Bush. Unbelievably of the three criminals responsible one surviving one, Harry Roberts, was released from prison in 2014, after serving 48 years in prison. As far as I know, he is still alive and free.

Things didn’t happen in the past because people respected law enforcement. It came in as a burglary call. Pretty routine call if you ask me. Most people in the UK don’t carry hand grenades or handguns round with them either!
It doesn't matter about guns or grenades. This man would be able to kill these 2 women with his bare hands and they wouldn't stand a chance. There needs to be a male officer with a female officer at all times as many men would just destroy 2 females. It's biology. Men are way more aggressive and way stronger than most women....
