Wouldn't the test had been more fair if you used the top of the line ATS which has a 3.6L V6 engine and 321 HP?

Cadillac is not only as good as the BMW, Cadillac is BETTER than the BMW.
Cadillac is not only less expensive to purchase but, it is also less expensive to insure and repair too. Cadillac uses PREMIUM Italian leather for both sides of the seats, door panels, and dashboard whereas BMW comes standard with cheap vinyl and plastic.
Cadillac doesn't just build great luxury cars, you know...
    They build CADILLACS♥

Why compare a 4cyl caddy to a 6cyl anything? Cadillac makes a V6 why not use it to make it fair?

+Dev Everything pretty sure the normally aspirated 3.6L V6 will do worse 0-60 where they test cars in Colorado. Now if your talking about the ATS-V.... that's in a whole different league of car.... that'st a monster of a car. Does 0-60 in 3.7 seconds at sea level.

    • @Dev_Everything
      @Dev_Everything 8 років тому +9

I have owned a 2.0 and now I own a 3.6 and I can tell you they are landslides apart. The 3.6 is a lot faster. Go test drive one and see for yourself!

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring

+Dev Everything my 4.0 fj cruiser that does 0-60 in an okay 6.8 seconds chuggalugs up at 8000 feet. My guess is it takes 9 seconds?
Forced induction cars don't have as much of a problem at the altitude they test these cars at.
The ATS-v that combines twin turbo's to that 3.6 liter making 465 hp that can be used in the high altitudes.

+Marcus Prousis That's wrong. The 3.6 liter ATS would be the most appropriate competitor to the 335. The CTS now competes with the 5 series, E-Class, A6. Completely different class of car. Also, it's a "Mashup". It's not supposed to be an apples to apples comparison. I've been subscribed to this channel for a while, they do this type of thing quite often and on purpose.

With the same engine, a V6, the Cadillac hovers around the same time. Some show it faster, others slower. Handling on a track the Cadillac does a little better in most online tests. Reviewers generally say they would take the BMW still, mostly because of the Cue system. It comes down to do you want an American or German car? I regard this as a win for Cadillac as they are finally building drivers cars that people want. Their sales numbers show this. People have a choice now.

The Small block will be highly unlikely to appear on the ATS. My guess is the ATS-V will get a uprated 3.6 V6TT derived from the CTS new engine, maybe with a higher state of tune around ~480hp. This is for 2 reasons:
    1. Fuel economy. The F30 M3 is already announced to a have boosted I6 as an example.
    2. V8 in the small Caddy in the eyes of marketing department may clash with the CTS-V if they shared similar engines.

Subtract 1.0 to 1.5 seconds from these guys reviews and then you get the real 0-60. It almost seems like this is more of a comedy thing than actual car review, not trying to be harsh but Fast Lane Car needs more professional drivers.

  • @602x10tothe23
    @602x10tothe23 11 років тому

I disagree with your first point. GM has already stated that a turbo V6 would not get any better fuel economy than the small block. Hence why the Corvette received a V8 and not a turbo V6. Anecdotally, my Trans Am with an LS1 got 31mpg on the highway, without direct injection, cylinder deactivation, or any of the other tech that went into the new LT1.
On your second point, I think that's why they'll go naturally aspirated on the ATS-V to make it more pure sporty, and supercharge the CTS-V

Ignore my username for a second. I think the BMW wins over the caddy handsdown. Not because I love BMWs or that I don't believe in GM. The BMW looks more refined. I think GM still can do some work on the ATS, especially the interior. Those gauges look like their lifted from a DTS. And the audio/climate look like their from the XTS. Their putting styling from a car designed for older class people, into a car designed for the young.

Probably for two reasons. One, maybe only the 2.0 was available to them. Second, at a mile above sea level, the turbo would probably be just as quick as the NA v6. Best chance to match a time is with forced air injection.

I'm interested to see if Cadillac puts that twin turbo 420hp V6 into the ATS as an ATS-V. It was announced a few days ago as one of the standard engines to be offered in the next CTS. I can only hope that's what GM WOULD do.Given the next M3 Tri-turbo I6 and the new C AMG is a 4.0 V8TT, Naturally Aspirated performance engines could be in its twilight years.
Note that the Trans Am only had to deal with late 1990s emission standards and such. Govt. is coming down hard on these regulations, hence why the Germans are using Forced Induction to achieve high power/ low emissions. Overcoming this will be hard without massive R&D budget, which at this time GM doesn't have.

Cadillac still benchmarks the 3, the Dimensions of the ATS is within millimetres of the 3 and even the engine choices are close

I can attest to this. Have a cousin in a 06 330i and he's almost spending every other week in the shop. Heard it was constantly overheating. Not to reliable BMWs...

Tha 328i does not do 5.4, it's more like 5.6 secs. & the 335i is in tha high 4's or 5 flat at lower elevation. If u were to pay attention they are about a mile above sea level

I owned an E30 and it was more reliable than the MS6, so I'm not sure about the whole "Mazda reliability" thing.
Besides that, both Mazda and BMW are quirky as hell. Doing simple mechanical tasks on either one tend to be more difficult than on American cars.

Yes, let's leave it up to the brand that's eliminating all manual transmission options from their cars in America. Definitely sounds like the brand for enthusiasts...

Then whats the point of this test? Similar sized cars, but one with6 cylinders and the other 4 cylinder. Was the outcome a surprise? 5 minute video for this test, if you going to make it a tedious affair, make the cars similar all round.

You should be using the 3.6 against the 335i. Smh that Cadillac Ats is better around corners than the BMW.

That's an outdated view. The Corvette, Camaro, and Mustang don't really have any good competition (on the track) in their price range from foreign cars. That's last-gen domestic sport cars vs mostly new competition. They're all losing hundreds of pounds for the new generations that are coming out in the next couple years and getting some pretty hefty power bumps and suspension upgrades.

It would have been a more even comparison with the ATS 3.6. Except for the navigation/CUE, Cadillac is very good and they are beginning to surpass BMW. And I've had a repair shop for 20 years, BMW is not very reliable at all...what level were you talking about?

Well bash me if u want but American cars have caught up with and bested the foreigns now. Gone are the days u can make the lame American cars break down argument. Come join the rest of us in 2014 please. The reviews have spoken. The ATS is a better driver than the Bimmer. The new CTS has been also getting rave reviews and is lighter than every car in its class. What's that about fat Americans? Yeah, thought so. Have several seats all of u talking smack u don't know. #factsWin

You are correct. American cars are seeing a renaissance. The handling and performance. But the styling is now surpassing the Europeans with sensible unique looks.
The interior is starting to break down in my friend 2012 BMW 5 series. Even the US are making good interiors now.

Right on all counts, except styling (which is personal preference of course). I think it's ugly as hell on the outside, mainly those goofy looking headlights. I don't mind the body lines, the rear end is a bit brash and the steering wheel is gaudy as hell, but I'm gonna pick one up anyway, found a good deal.

This Caddy was built to beat the benchmark of that class, the BMW 3 seriess and It fails, but now....look maaaam' ...It's competing in it's own class!
Just admit it: it fails, It is just another premium sedan powered by a 2.0 Turbo engine It's good, but not the best....end of story!

Right, if they had done a proper comparison and used the ATS 3.6 instead of the 4, I bet the Caddy would have trounced the BMW.
