  • The Charles River Recreation Area was an early nature enclave for Bostonians to dance, hike, and boat until the 1950s, when it was sacrificed for two new Interstate Highways. What is left is a largely inaccessible series of traffic islands.
    ABOUT ME:
In two decades of traveling the USA I discovered many weird, haunted, and beautiful places. I decided to start a UA-cam channel about my visits to them. My day typically begins with me driving somewhere for the sunrise, visiting an unusual local spot, hiking a nearby trail, and shooting the sunset wherever I end up.

Time for you to get one of those kayaks that fold into suitcase size. Imagine what you could explore without jumping over fences. The Charles river is awesome, the history and what-not.

Seriously considering an inflatable one for the van

@@undertheradarvan The Oru kayaks are amazing. Foldable and lightweight carbon fiber design.

I remember going to Norumbega Park as a kid in the early fifties. It was where the Marriott is now. The "lakes" section of the Charles is still nice to canoe or kayak. And, you know it was a Native town also. Thus-"totem pole" ballroom, ugh. Intentional erasure.

It is cool to kayak and I admit the giant steel pylons in the river actually make the kayaking more interesting than it would be! Just wish a connecting hiking trail was made of all the traffic islands

Thank you for the video and taking us along for the hike. I once lived in Massachusetts on the Cape but didn’t explore much of the western part unfortunately; didn’t make it past Boston. Will you be visiting and filming at Cape Cod this summer? So beautiful there.

The Totem Pole Ballroom was where the Newton Marriot is at Norumbega Park.

That Marriott is nice but I'd much rather it be a ballroom!

Not just the totem pole but rides at Norembega park too. Lots of fun back in the '50s early 60s until they sold out to Marriott.

It's a real shame what has been done to facilitate the convenience of car travel, I'm in London UK and we have the same problem, there are rivers completely cut off from public access.

sleeping 5 days a week in a van is NOT "living in a van"!
