Thank you for joining me as I solo-explore the abandoned Medfield State Hospital (AKA Medfield Insane Asylum. Constructed in 1896 and abandoned in the early 2000s, this facility treated 2200 patients at its peak. Since then, the dozens of buildings have sat boarded up. This location was used as a film site in the 2010 film “Shutter Island” which was directed by Martin Scorsese and starred Leonardo DiCaprio.
Note: No trespassing occurred during the filming of this video. All locations are public land and the memories of those who lived & died in this place were respected at all times.
I grew up in Medfield and my Mom was the 11-7 supervisor. We grew up there, every one worked there! What they did to those poor patients. Lobotomies in the 50s for depression. It wasn't real nice but very sad. They have kept the chapel open and I believe turning it into a theater
The grounds are kept up! There's an overhang over the Charles River that many go to meditate, relax, trails to follow. It's a pretty cool place but I can still hear the patients!
This is so fascinating, thank you for sharing! And thank you so much for watching
These buildings are probably in such good condition because they are boarded up so well. I’m glad that you showed respect by not trying to force your way inside. They might be better inside than we think. Lead paint certainly. Asbestos is not hazardous unless it is airborne. This made me subscribe to your channel.
Thank you for watching and subscribing! I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@@junedizer827 they're horrible and beat up inside! I bet there's tons of germs , rodents, old gross urinals. No thanks. Nothing of interest in those blogs. I'm surprised many are still standing.
@@susansimoneau768 They may indeed be worse inside. If the buildings have been closed for years, there would no longer be viable germs, but perhaps mold. Rodents only exist where they have a food source.
Thank you for posting this!
Thank you for watching!
Awesome video.Thanks for posting this
Glad you enjoyed it
They should at least open the best standing building and make it a museum with stuff they can find in the other buildings.
I agree, the whole place should be a museum. Thanks so much for watching! I’d appreciate it if you’d consider subscribing to my channel!
My brother was there for ten years in the 20th century. We used to visit him when I was a teenager. They were definitely locked in. It was very secure. In those days there no group homes for them to go to. I found it sad to watch because my brother died just before Covid. He spent his last 20 or so in group homes which were more humane. Thank you for keeping it respectful. When we would visit him it was nice to be outside other than that it was weird.
Thank you for watching and I’m sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story
Thank you for documenting and sharing!

I never realized how large this place was. This place was still open in the 1970s.
Ya it was surprisingly expansive. I didn’t realize until I got in there just how big it was. Thanks so much for watching! I’d appreciate it if you considered subscribing
It didn't shut down til the 2000's.
It’s so beautiful and peaceful yet eerie ❤ I hope one day me and my daughter could visit and take pictures.
Thanks so much for watching! I’d appreciate you if you considered subscribing
@@Decembererykah23 The grounds are beautiful and kept up. Many people walk there dogs there, let there kids run around. There are trails behind and a beautiful scenic area over the Charles River.
I love 💕 that movie. Leonardo DiCaprio was great on that film.
Agreed! Thanks so much for watching!
I never knew this was there, but I've been in Taunton State Hospital when picking up a client after she was released to a residential home....that place was eerie, esp when the client was in the van with us, telling us about the other patients walking the grounds. One had murdered his parents and been there since he was a young man. I think they use part of it now as a rehab/detox center.
I also went to Lakeville Hospital when it was open and running as a student, Old Colony health servoces shop took all their students there to see the different equipment like Iron Lungs 🫁 and how they work, and a few other well know residents of that time. Its fully abandoned now, but i believe there is security that sits across the way because so many people tey to get a look inside. Id love to see inside both places now that its been 20+ yrs since i went!
Thank you for sharing, this is fascinating.
did my psych rotation there, in the 70's... newton wellesley unit , way out back.... it was a sad place but at least those people had a roof and three meals..... now those people are on the streets.............. i don't know what is worse
It's really interesting how most windows are boarded up but then there's some that just aren't? It just makes me think. Wish they'd let people into the buildings it'd be interesting to see what condition they're in
Agreed! Thanks so much for watching! I’d appreciate it if you considered subscribing!

The government should be required to return all their abandoned properties back to useful canvases for redevelopment. That means clean it up and get to it....
Completely agreed. Thanks so much for watching!
Check out the Ladd School in Exeter, ri
I’ll look into this. Thank you!
Is anyone familiar with the other abandoned mental hospital in Danvers? It was the focus of the 2001 extremely underrated indie film Session 9. It was a very, very creepy place before it was sold and turned into apartments.
I’ll have to check this out
