This episode was taped on 15 January 1982. It's a bittersweet week. On the one hand, we have the Queen of Match Game, Betty White, on, and any week with Betty is going to be a great one! But it's also the last week of the classic Match Game. After this week, I still have the Match Game / Hollywood Squares hour to watch, but it just won't be the same. Special thanks to Match Game Productions for putting all these nostalgic videos up on UA-cam. You know your daughter is really wild when she receives two dozen thank-you notes from the FOOTBALL TEAM. (2 matches, including Betty!) My wife is always overdoing things. Last Christmas she even put tinsel on the TINSEL. (Bzzt! I should have gone with my first thought, which was DOG.) I just got a pen that will write underwater. It'll come in handy if I ever have to write a check to JACQUES COUSTEAU. (4 matches out of 5, including Betty!) Rodney Rich is so rich he's got SILVER DOLLARS in his penny loafers. (Bzzt!) Afraid of the DARK ($500 match) Golden PARACHUTE (Bzzt!) Mean Marvin is really mean. In school, he was voted Most Likely to Take a Job as THE GODFATHER'S Right-hand Man. (Bzzt!)
I would love to see betty white to play this game in this generation not to mention tht she is 98 yrs of age she would be soo good at today as she did then
But it did make sense of her answer given her love for dogs Golden Retriever there were many possibilities with Golden blank but it was a fitting Betty White response
@@FlamingoKicker This was taped in January 1982, and Golden Girls premiered on NBC in Fall of 1985. Assuming that the first season of the Golden Girls was taping in the summer of 1985, that would be about 3.5 years.
I just watched this, and I THOUGHT you meant he hugged her genuinely. This isn't the first time he's "hugged" her like that, but unfortunately, it wasn't a GENUINE hug
Before I do the stats rest in peace to an absolute legend in the game show world alex trebek 1940-2020😢😢😢😢 he will be so heavily missed he was a brilliant game show host................now on to the stats 145 we hit 4th time we tied the record for most number of viewers 30th night with 100+ viewers 162 overall can we break records during the final week of episodes for mg as it continues on see you tomorrow night good night my friends! And thanks mgp!😁😁
That contestant's family is same as my mother's - 9 boys and 3 girls. My father's family was even larger. He was one of 14. My parents actually improved having 8. My poor brother was the only boy.
I don't know if they knew it was their final week, but if they had I would have preferred to have on the panel Bill Daily instead of Skip and Fanny Flag
@R his other line in that vein was "get your own show!" but then of course we saw what happened when someone actually did get their own show. He was bitterly resentful about Richard Dawson's success and held a grudge he probably never got over. He may have done the "I'm the star!" bit for comedic effect but deep down I don't think he was kidding. But yeah, for all his faults, I don't know who else could have done it. Maintaining the balance of chaos and order and allowing for the unscripted antics and still manage to get a game played.
@R that's funny because I find myself typing a lot of comments/replies that I end up abandoning and not posting cuz I figure "who cares?" LOL I just get irked by the sweeping generalizations like that Gene was a wonderful human being. Or the incomprehensible suggestion that the show would have been so much better without Brett! I realize I risk saying that, not knowing where you stand on the Brett issue 😁
@R Gene seemed to think that doing something to excess automatically made it funnier. A few times he said "in show business, we know better than to go for the obvious joke" but yet he'd do that very thing all the time. As for Brett, I think she was immensely relatable to that huge "housewife" audience who weren't beauty queens and weren't "perfect" and maybe they had boorish husbands too. And being so outspoken laid her wide open to be the butt of many jokes over the years. She was willing to play the fool and give the others an easy target for their punchlines. It's classic comedy team work. Pre-Brett, the panel was amusing but rather polite. Good but not great. When Charles did the 1990 version without her, he reportedly said "it's just not the same without Susan".
@R Eva Gabor! (Ever see her on Password? She'd yell "shtop ze clock" when she didn't know a word! Great stuff.) One "controversial" panelist I love is Patti Deutch! Because she never apologized or tried to explain her unmatchable answers. Like she just didn't give a f***. Which I realize is exactly why she's so hated. Can't stand Joyce Bulifant....exact opposite of PD. Always whining that she didn't know why she said whatever. So desperate to be liked. It's tiresome.
@R Charles was the best at taking Gene down a notch or two! On one occasion when Gene was being a pretentious know it all, Charles yelled "oh aren't you just Mr big shot emcee in your borrowed suits!" 🤣

[22,046 Viewers / 201 episodes / 18th week] A monumental day occured Saturday with doing 200 shows of stat tracking since the beginning and its been a heck of a beast of momentum we have seen to think we hit 161 of 200 shows with 100 now the average rate of 100s is now 80.5% of the time which was better than the 75.2% we had after 100 shows, now 4 of 5 shows see 100 which is remarkable. With that said with the numbers above our cumulative average decreased to 109.67 which is a .4% drop from last week or about .30viewers. Its still an increase thats all that counts. The beginning of the end of a great show!
How interesting that it was 'Golden _______' with Betty, who would go on to star in The Golden Girls in a little over three years from this taping.
I didn't realize it was that close.
But it did make sense of her answer given her love for dogs Golden Retriever there were many possibilities with Golden blank but it was a fitting Betty White response

golden OPPORTUNITY
I am loving all the misspellings of Jacques Cousteau.
Yes. Though it looks like CNR got the spelling right.
Awww, Brett and Gene hugging was sweet. ^_^
I haven't seen it yet. Was it real? He's treated her so mean for such a long time!
I just watched this, and I THOUGHT you meant he hugged her genuinely. This isn't the first time he's "hugged" her like that, but unfortunately, it wasn't a GENUINE hug
It’s a shame this episode wasn’t taped in the late 80s. Betty could have written GOLDEN GIRLS as the answer!
Winter spring 1982 match game gene rayburn
Gene Rayburn best on match game 1973 to 1983

Well said GP what a way to end the week with another 145. But 150, when? Kappa.
That contestant's family is same as my mother's - 9 boys and 3 girls. My father's family was even larger. He was one of 14. My parents actually improved having 8. My poor brother was the only boy.
Another hint they might have known this was the last week, Brett mentioning that it might hopefully be the last time she says toilet.
Did they know this was the last week, or was having Betty on here for the final week just a fluke?
I think “a loan shark” is the definitive answer for the underwater cheque question.
Perfect!
I don't know if they knew it was their final week, but if they had I would have preferred to have on the panel Bill Daily instead of Skip and Fanny Flag
All the panelists are deceased. Melinda was the last and she passed on March 24, 2020.
Mclean Stevenson had some cold here. He had it for several episodes.
He had that nasal sound but he wasn't coughing. Maybe it was allergies.
I just got a pen that will write underwater. It will come in handy if I ever have to write a check to Jaws
Hoping they start over can't loose MG.
Gene was simply the best!

McLean with the Grambling State mention!!
Someone made a comment about the spelling of jock Cousto I’m not sure if I spelt it right or not, but it is interesting to see all the misspellings
You know your daughter is really wild when she receives 2 dozen thank you notes from the U.S. Senate
How about Golden Girls? LOL....only time would tell
This was before that show.

MARINES
From Real People Skip Stephenson
From Days of Our Lives Melinda O'Fee
People don’t understand that the devil is the real bogeyman!
I remember watching this on KDKA Pittsburgh either in 1982 or 1983. Skip was a lousy panelist.
Why does Skip always show multiple answers?
He learned it from the old hag.
Probably because Brett and Charles always did
