Thanks for your sharing, Andrew. My husband and I are looking forward to retiring in Malaysia. Everything seems perfect according to Andrew. We would have a much quality of life there than retiring in the USA. The health care system is excellent. Housing cost is much affordable. The foods, the greeneries, the jungles, the mountains, the beaches, the people , the fresh air. Crime rate is low. Air Asia domestic airfare is so cheap for seniors. We are planing to apply under Sarawak MM2H for it’s super affordable. Sarawak is safe, serene, and peaceful. People are friendly, welcoming and hospitable. On the top of those, English is widely spoken in Malaysia. We can’t wait. Senior citizens of America, let us explore. Life is a journey not a destination.

Yes, that is the right choice mem. Sarawak is super laid-back that you will felt time is moving too slowly there. Nice place to enjoy your retirement. I'm a local Sarawakian now retired too at my own home after 29 years working in the Peninsula Malaysia. Cheers

I’m so glad to see this video Taylor! When I was in KL in March, all my grab drivers were so very nice. I would talk to them, ask questions and they would ask me questions about the US. The driver that picked me up at the airport in KL was super nice and told me all about the buildings we passed and some history of Malaysia. He told me that he used to be a tour guide in Malaysia. I felt so lucky to hear everything he told me about Malaysia. Also said welcome here, and offered suggestions!I could go on and on. I was traveling solo, never felt afraid, I did not venture out at night either.I can’t wait to get back in November! Hope to see you sometime Taylor!😊

Yes, I've looked at those Scandinavian countries, too cold and way over my budget.
Plus, mentioned by UA-camrs living in those countries is the fact that citizens are happy but that doesn't necessarily mean that much friendliness extends to those outside of their immediate social circle.
Yup, my next move (should the occasion arise which I hope it doesn't) would be a relocation to Malaysia from my current home here in Puerto Rico.

Hi Andrew, I lived amongst good neighbors. One night more than a decade ago, within the residential area I stored the metal beam for gypsum board in front the lawn of my house. I rented a lorry to load up the stuff to my new renovated office nearby with several other friends. Shortly after that we went for night lepak at an open air restaurant.
Ten minutes later, there came two guys in casual clothing started questioning us. It turned out that both of them were undercover police officers. I'm glad that I lived amongst good Samaritan who didn't hesitate to call police for the sake of his neighbor. I showed them my ID with home address. I found it hilarious because I "stole" things from my own home just to be interrogated 15 minutes later by the roadside under clear sky and a bright full moon😅

as Malaysian, i may not claim its the best and super safe here. But it depends on locations and situations. Basically everyone may do some research to choose the best locations.
But once you choose the best locations, it will be great to live in Malaysia. I was in KL since 1997 from campus life, working life and now my kids also start enrolled to local campus.
for foreigners, with USD500K, anyone may start great life in Malaysia. But also depends on the good investment and finance management.

I've seen cars and bikes speed through red lights many times. I nearly got run over yesterday crossing at a pedestrian crossing near the Intercontinental hotel by a guy who was texting on his phone! I get the impression that if they hit you they'd keep going and the car behind you would run over whatever's left of your mangled body. This is my third time here and after some of the close calls I've had I'm having second thoughts about returning again.

Having said that, America is still a great place for a broke-ass foreigner like me to tap business funding with a brand new business with zero income. For contrast, I have retired relatives in Singapore, they have a fully paid for $700k condo in SG and yet unable to get a loan against their property without proof of adequate income -- since they are retired, so a new business with no income would be out of the question in most countries except in the good old USA.🙂

Yes, KL and most other major cities in Malaysia are generally as safe as you can get in any well-run and well policed US or UK suburbs/towns. Crime? Yes, you will have petty crime but it is not as pervasive as one might imagine. And social media isn't helping when it comes to those who get a kick out of fanning the fears and concerns of many. Having visited travelled widely (still do), and a long time visitor to KL, this city is as safe as one can get for visitors and many locals. In general KLites are kind and helpful if one asks for help. Politeness goes a long way and for me, this is true any where in the world. And are there scammers ... yes there are. Being street smart helps to avoid most of these nefarious schemes. It would be a strange world if there is no crime ... perhaps Pyongyang might be the place to go to for this idealized living? (sarcasm intended).

Thanks Andy, you covered the issue of safety and crime in Malaysia very accurately I think. Pretty much my experience experience years ago. In fact, Malaysia (and Japan) I'd say are maybe the safest and most secure places you could be.
In terms of non-crime safety factors in Malaysia, I'd say traffic risks are something to be aware of, but Malaysia is one of the few countries in Asia I'd consider driving in and much less enjoyed driving in. Tropical disease risks like Dengue were a bit of a concern as I knew a couple of people who had pretty severe cases but I'm hard pressed to come up with much in Malaysia that would pose more of a risk than in the U.S. or most of the world.
Serious crime back towards the end of the last century in Malaysia was pretty rare, the only experience with a serious crime I was close to was when neighbor and her husband returned to their somewhat secluded home in Tanjong Bungah after being gone for a couple of days and noticed the patio sliding door open. My neighbor thought she left the door open and as she approached the door se saw the latch has been forced open, and as she she yelled to her husband three burglars rushed for the door, the first armed with a knife knocking her backwards onto the concrete patio where she received minor skull fracture. In the process of colliding, that burglar dropped a prohibited knife. Police were pretty quick to apprehend the perpetrators who were in the country illegally and doing burglaries for criminal group from Pakistan. My neighbor and her husband identified the group and the young man whit the knife was given capitol punishment. Eventually that criminal gang was eliminated. My neighbors, Americans who were part of a christian church were troubled over the sentence the young man received.
About that time, also in Penang my girlfriend and I were taking the old mountain road late at night that ran near the reservoir when an emaciated elderly man stepped out in the road and stopped us, as two other obviously non-Malaysians watched from the side of the road, the poor old man asked for money. I said: I don't have any money for you' and in a pitifully opened his shirt and displayed a rusty blade of a cane-cutting cutlass and said "Vee are hungry we need money Vee don't want trouble " The old broken cutlass was so rusted and dull and the old man so frail I chuckled and handed him a pack of cigarettes I kept in the glove box in case of police stops, and about 50 ringgit out of pity for the old man. He politely thanked me and we went on our way.
My Girlfriend was shocked having been the first crime she had experienced and called the Police and the told her they apprehended then robbers not long after we encountered them. Turns out they were illegal workers from Pakistan who were stranded, broke and hungry, it was quite a headline crime story for Penang, and they all received pretty severe sentences.
The only other things I might classify as 'Crime' I experienced were when corrupt traffic police would shake me down for 100 Ringgit for a bogus traffic ticket, but that (and worse) is something I've experienced from police in the U.S., and $20 payoff to a crooked traffic cop Malaysia I take any day over an encounter here with a bad egg here.

I don't know how that "happiness survey" was conducted, but generally speaking the main reason a vast number of locals are unhappy is because they find themselves trapped financially. Singles or couples with no kids taking home the equivalent of USD1.2k - 1.3k monthly, are still coping well enough but it's still very restrictive. Imagine those who have to live on less.....and there are lots out there. It's a grind with no "poorer" countries to retire to as some sort of possible future option. Many are working terribly long hours either due to the nature of their work or because commuting issues stretch out the working day. Those who manage to stick to a 9 to 5 sort of arrangement, are busy with side hustles to help them get ahead. It's that bleak, sinking feeling which makes them "unhappy".

Always stay safe, just few days ago, i read the news that a chinese national was found dead in his hotel room in Genting Highlands. It was reported tha a Sri Lankan and a Pakistani gained entry into his room with an access card they got frm the cleaner. The deceased was winning in gambling at the casino prior to his death. So please be wary and always lock ur door in the hotel room even in Malaysia, do not take safety for granted.

There were over 15,000 knife attacks in London in 2023. Gun control only gives complete control to the government. Do you like to live in Venezuela where the government has killed tens of thousands of its citizens or would you prefer to live in China under the cultural revolution where tens of millions were killed or maybe be a recruit for the russian military in ukraine where 600k russian troops have been killed because people cannot revolt against their gov. These countries love the idea of citizens not having weapons. I wonder why. Most murders in the usa are still gang related so the statistics are somewhat skewed. The number is about 6 per 100k while lovely venezuela is around 40 per 100k. Malaysia is a very safe country at the current moment. Murder rate is around .7 per 100k and once again it is higher in certain areas. Building jumpers have a much higher rate in asia than in the west. Go figure. The 2nd amendment is protection against the government. It is not really for self defense or for criminals to use weapons. Have a great day!
