I did that ride last year after seeing this vid on a red hot day & yes, the return to Sedbergh is a bit of a pain & that steep road section was a killer. Thanks for the vid
Cracking ride, cracking weather, cracking route - just cracking all round!!! I'm glad you said it was one of the best trails you've ridden as I was thinking the same. Another excellent video, wright amount of riding/commentary, and what views! excellent - keep it up. 👌
Cracking ride that At Ravenstonedale you were 4 miles from me I've a nice 40-50 miler couple of tough climbs good down hills and a few bogs to sink in if your available... when the normality returns etc plenty of good views too I'm self employed so I don't do to much risky stuff im out for a good ride with good views just have a day out Hope you had a good Xmas All the best for the new year
Did this ride 17 years ago, Bowderdale beck is the best single track I have ever done, still till this day. It still looks like I remember it. Love to get back there one day, shame about the return though.
Just started watching your videos and loving it.I live in sedbergh so really enjoyed watching this video. I am not a mountain bike myself but I do have a 1980s BMX.
Did this a few years ago with lads from work and absolutely loved it (first half of it 😉) trail through the valley is narrower than it looks and you've gotta watch for the peddle strikes, every rut looked so familiar, that's because you vividly remember the best rides. 👍😎 (Did the second half with a broken rear mech and so was stuck in one gear, BRUTAL 😄)
we rode this route last weekend, the valley was mostly unrideable due to all the rain recently so we plotted a road route back to Sedbergh. I must admit, you do make it look a lot easier than it is.
Great video mate, shame the trails were a bit rubbish on the return journey but that's the way it goes sometimes I guess. The singletrack off the Calf looks fantastic though 👍
I've been looking at doing this ride for a while now, deffo gona do it before crimbo now. One of the best things about living in Ripon is having so much (almost) on the door step.
I actually like it as a loop. There is a dull bit before Ravenstonedale but I like the rest after the tarmac. The bit through the trees is fun and some nice bits of singletrack later on. More xc in character but I quite like that sometimes. Yeah would be up for the out and back sometime after lockdowns.
@@TrailFinder Ive just posted an extended version of this ride in these comments mate, if your feeling fit I highly recommend it & if I can do it you most certainly can :)
Was planning on doing the Calf just deciding which direction to do it, recon you went the best way 😀, I've just orderd a the 1030 plus you should get commission 👍
If I was to ever do it again I would go the way I went. Then as soon as I hit tarmac at bowderdale I would turn around and go back the way I came as an out and back. I really didn’t like the return leg. But if you want to do the full loop I would plan it your self and not use my route. That way you could stay on tarmac as much as possible avoiding the very boring and tough field riding. When you thinking of riding it? You will love the climb screen on the 1030 plus. Lots of good info
@@TrailFinder was thinking of doing it this week, mind now we're in tier 4 I don't think your supposed to leave the county. Got to wait for my birthday for the garmin but it's only a couple of weeks.
@@TrailFinder yer it'll be taking my bike for a Walk again 😀, actually the soft ground not to much of a problem on my fatbike but there may not be much fun factor.
I tackled this a few years back on the wrong bike- 80mm travel, no dropper, semi slick XC tyres and clipped in. Nightmare. Eventually came a cropper on the scrubby woodland descent at 4/5 distance and broke two bones in my foot. An agonising solo limp back to Sedburgh followed by a three hour drive home and straight into A&E 😮
Great vid as usual ❤ I am seriously looking at the Garmin edge 1030+ but just wanted to get your take on it’s off-road turn by turn ? I currently have my mobile phone with memory map mounted on the bars but it’s not the best battery life and in the event of a crash. How do you find it for trail nav?
😂😂 brilliant. I do keep meaning to change the title. It’s a great ride. But think I’d do it as out and back next time. Soon as I get to the end of that single track. I’d turn round and go back up the calf
@@gr1809 😂. The second half of the ride is very poor in places. Think going back the way I came and descending the calf back into sedbergh would be really good fun
Did you take the Sales Way from Calf over to Hazelgill Knot or turn right down onto the bridleway down towards Hare Shaw then along the valley to Bowerdale/
If you go to 2:18 on my hero 9 vid you can see how I mounted it. It’s a GoPro tripod mount I’ve ground down to fit that helmet. The weight distribution is perfect there. I can hardly tell I’m wearing it
Great video as always dude! Just getting my head round you only started mtb riding 4 years ago?! (2016) ...what was your passion before you found the love of riding? Ive been riding about 17 years now, i go through good and bad years of riding. this been the latter. Your rides inspire me as im sure they do alot of other ppl out there. Keep it up!
Thanks Aaron. So pleased you get inspired by watching my vids. My big passion before I started to ride is skiing. But I wanted to do something I could do anytime and on my own. . Nearly chose road biking. But ended up doing mtb. In the 4 years since I started I’ve just thrown my self into it. And absolutely love it
Yes a huge tip. After the very long road section on the return journey. You will go back off road and come to a small farm. The bridleway is just before the farm. I want through the farm and ended up having to lift my bike over 2 barbed wire fences. You will know exactly where I went wrong when you come to it. But know you will know to just go back 50 metres to the entrance to the bridleway
Nice great as always! 👍 I’d been warned against this place since it was gnarly AF but it doesn’t look anywhere near as bad as Stainburn! I’ll add this onto the list :)
@Gearzilla Its one of my regular local rides & as Andy says, its not gnarly, you just have to be a bit careful lower down at the start of the valley out the as theres some very steep drops with a really narrow trail right on the edge & its fairly rutted so you've to be careful with your pedals.
530 is a great device 530/830/1030 all the same really. 1030 is the flagship so just has the extra features. 530 isn’t touch screen though. But that’s not a bad thing

Brilliant ride......oh the climb up the first Howgill I remember it well after watching this. You’ve had a cracking day out there!
Yes great day for it. Howgill is usually in the clouds

It was great that section. 😁

Epic riding mate, i could do with one of those GPS things so i can get out and explore more on my own, cracking video 👍

Yeah I use one to good for discovering new trails specially when others like yourself upload them to garmin or trail forks
