  • I have the feeling many will love this one!
As of July 3rd 2023, Merri-Bek Council now. officially has a 4-BIn waste Service. In true fashion Merri-bek has to be different - having the below system:
    Garbage - Weekly
    Mixed Recycling- Fortnightly
FOGO (Food Organic & Garden Organics) - Weekly
    Glass Recycling - Monthly
Merri-Bek is now the 13th ‘early-mover’ council to complete the rollout of its kerbside glass service, joining Ararat, Whittlesea, Colac Otway, Hobsons Bay, Horsham, Macedon Ranges, Moyne, Pyrenees, Surf Coast, Warrnambool, City of Yarra and Yarriambiack, with their Glass Recycling bin Service,
I have only now in September had the chance to film the new service, After many failed attempts to film the glass, before school I set out to the Thursday area to get my first look at what truck was doing the glass, After hearing bottles smashing from a few streets away, I raced down to find #11485, and got a few clips. The next day, being Friday, I had arranged with a mate to set out and film some more of the new service, unfortunately he couldn’t make it, so it was just me and 11485 again.
I’m pretty happy with the footage and being the first to film glass in Merri-bek (although it was pretty likely I’d get it first anyway), while the video is a bit short, this is the first time a GenV has appeared on glass on UA-cam, all other videos are of Dennis or Iveco Spaks.
I’m definitely going to try and film more of the glass over the holidays.

Awesome mate, sounds sick with a GenV, would love to see this in action irl, reminds me a bit of some of our rural recycling collections where glass is 75% of what’s in the bins, can’t wait for more action mate!!

Cheers mate, it is defiantly sick on a GenV, I prefer it over the Dennis Spak I filmed a year ago in Hobsons Bay (Vlog 103) haha it's so much louder irl, My bin was only 1/2 full but still made a decent noise, the bin @ 1:40 was completely full tho. It is nice to be able to hear glass smashing from many streets away, making it easy to find, There are still ppl that put glass in their mixed recycling, not knowing of the change. I'm very keen on getting some more, Glad you enjoyed.

That method of collection sure is different to what I'm use to. How frequent is the glass collection service? I'm surprised to see them using 120 litre wheelie bins for this; I guess they are expecting people to drink lots! No glass colour sorting either which is another point of difference.
Our council offers 45 litre glass crates which are on a bi-weekly collection service where all colours are sorted onboard the truck.
The driver does not seem to give a care in the world if the bins stay upright or fall over; dump and go - might as well drop them mid-air ha ha!
Great video, keep up the good work!

Thanks Mate, it sure is different to oven in NZ, Glass for us is collected once a month (every 4 weeks) Most councils with a 4-bin service use 120Ls, And I think their appropriate for monthly collections, my bin was only half full, but the bin @ 1.40 was completely full, a big difference in the noise, haha, Most of the drivers around here are like that, just trying to be efficient, most times is bad placement that causes bins to fall, but sometimes drivers can be a bit lazy, It is nice to be ale to hear glass smashing from many streets away, makes it easy to find. Thanks for the comment, More to come.

Ah yea, apparently any councils that don't currently have a glass bin wont be receiving one because of the 'return and earn' scheme that starts in November (personally I think its a load of bullshit) Don't see the point in having both a 4-bin system and retune and earn, should just be one or the other.

That was just a rumour that got around it is still the same 2027 all councils to have a drop-off point or kerbside glass bin and 2030 all councils to have a fogo system in place
The fogo one is Victorian government but the federal government made it for the whole of Australia for all councils to have fogo bins

@@jackhim8213 Your spot on, it’s on the Mitchell shire page I read about it over a year ago, pretty cool, I wonder if they will keep the Cleanaway contract when the glass and green bins roll out, and what trucks they get!
I think Cleanaway will eventually lose the contract but not for a while since the Mitchell shire is a rural council but eventually when Mitchell shire gets built out it will probably get JJR, Or solo

@@will823it’s a very weird arrangement, and prior to 2001 some parts of the council were done by cleanaway, in 2002 council didn’t want to deal with the south side which is stacked with blocked bins, they also didn’t want to pay for runners, so it was contracted out and citywide has been doing it even since.
