      Please, Please, Please don't make your students paint entire scenes in one go. All my art teachers do that and get mad when colours bleed and the paintings aren't 'realistic' ? Combined with crappy brushes and crappy paint and about 45 mins for an entire portrait, everyone fails in the end so, please, please, let your students go at their own pace and let them follow this guy's advice. It's pure gold!

    Interesting how your realistis portraits are always female, while your male characters are always drawn in your anime style in your recent works. Is there any particular reason for that? Or just preference?

    • @LaovaanArt
      @LaovaanArt  8 років тому +412

      just preference I guess xD I don'treally like the clichee infant manga girls.... but it's like some people draw only manga and others only realisic - a preference :)

    This was sooo helpful, even if it was things i was aware of, it took me so long to figure things out through trial and error and you explain really well why certain techniques work and some don't.
    You also talked about pushing the paint and moving it around to achieve some effects and that was really helpful!
    A video more specifically dedicated to skin and then to hair would be awesome! I'm also curious about edges, you kind of touched on it but the hardest thing for me is how to control an effect where the colors softly flow and blend together and when you want a hard edge to your drawing. It's really hard tondo, even when you know about wet on wet and wet on dry.

  • @aciddemons
    @aciddemons 8 років тому +8

    This was so helpful. I've seen a lot of tutorials talking about painting wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry but rarely do they mention how to use the two effectively together. Thank you.

    Awesome! What sets this video apart from other tutorials/overviews is that you carefully walked through the application of the techniques. Most videos only show how to lay down colors. It's great to know not only the how's of the techniques but also the why's. You changed my mindset about watercolor! 😀

    I am a simple woman. I see Seven, I like.
    This was a very informative and extremely useful video - subbed! I look forward to looking through your past videos and seeing your future ones. If I had any requests for what to learn about, I would ask for the different ways to clean/manage your brush (such as when you were "pushing" color - what did you have in your hand?) or how to manage large splashes of wild, contrasting color on detailed pieces (such as your lana-inspired portrait). Thank you for sharing with us :)

    HOLY CRAP DUDE, you just made everything click for me. I've seen a good amount of tutorials for beginners in watercolors and for the most part I understood what they were trying to say but it didn't make sense till this video. You made it so digestible and I could totally understand now how some other watercolor artists, including you, go about their paintings.
    I would totally tune in for this series. It makes so much sense now, completely mind blown.

      Hi, I would recommend using brushes with natural hair, specifically for watercolor. I have one big one for washes, one medium with a fine point (so you can get pretty detailed and thin if you don't apply much pressure, I actually could use only that brush because it's extremely versatile and awesome) and a really thin one (like a number 2 but i don't know if brush size is a standard everywhere). The important aspect is that the brush is fairly fat (lots of strands) that gather really nicely to a thin point that doesn't fray. I have other brushes (a straight one and a rounds tip one but i never use them ^^) But I am interested in Laovaan showing us what he gets because he can master really really fine lines, and i wonder what he uses to do that.

    • @iliveinaconstantstateoffea9634
      @iliveinaconstantstateoffea9634 8 років тому +4

      Sky Charbonnier Thanks! Quite helpful and I do agree. Laovaan does make incredibly fine lines so I'm extremely curious to see his way to paint. I want to find my own way and it might be therapeutic to me when I do start painting.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor 8 років тому +13

      Synthetic brushes these days do a fantastic job at mimicking natural hair brushes. My favorites are Neptune and Elite brushes from Princeton (depending on the area you live in, availability changes) that mimic squirrel and kolinsky respectively. And no animals had to be harmed in the making :) Regardless, yes, round brushes with good points tend to be the most versatile brushes, in my opinion.

    Thank you so much for making this tutorial! Unlike a lot of other watercolor tutorials I've seen here on UA-cam that cover similar basics, but don't really apply them practically, I really appreciate that you explained how to apply the same techniques to how they work for different subjects/objects (landscapes and portraits) as opposed to just one type of drawing. Those specifics are extremely helpful! :)

While i'm not really embarrassed of my lack of education it makes it really difficult to pick up things with techniques or things that are kind of complicated in the beginning stages because im entirely teaching myself. but after watching this i really feel like i can work on watercolors again, i feel like i actually have some grasp on this medium that ive desperately wanted to work with. thank you so much!!!!

    Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I've recently started playing with watercolors and have admired your work for some time. I did not realize watercolor required drying in between each layer. I look forward to watching more of your videos. :)

    He looks very familiar. I just can't put my finger on it. He looks like another famous youtuber who has green hair. I don't know his name.

    As someone who has always been too scared to buy watercolours, even though I really wanted to, I thought this was really helpful and motivated me to finally buy them(I've been using aquarell pencils until now, which are great, but just not the same as "the real deal"). If the actual art teachers I had so far had been a little more like you, I would have been motivated to get more into this hobby a lot sooner. I'm not saying they were bad, just that they didn't bring across any passion for art and the lessons felt forced. My friend, who's also into art, and I found that we weren't able to develop our own style in the class, since most tasks were strongly limiting us and basically all we did was copy "the old masters", instead of doing something our own way. I've been following this channel for a few months now and also showed my friend a few videos and I hope even though the internet where I am going to live will be bad, I'll still try to stick around because I really enjoy your content, especially the livestreams with the two of you are very entertaining so I just wanted to say thank you for that and the good advice :) (oh and thanks to anyone who read this mess, I seriously suck and writing comments of moderate lengt *sigh*)

    Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've only ever used oils and acrylics, but have loved the look of watercolors, so I'm starting to dabble in it. You're work is amazing and beautiful! I hope to someday be half as good as you!💕
