Ed Ortiz Yeah, I was there too. Not this night, but the night before. Or maybe it was the night after; its been awhile. I was so happy when this stuff was released on CD many years later.

+Neal Montgomery Hi Neal, Are you saying that these sessions at the Cellar Door have been released on cd? I have one of Danny's Redneck Jazz cds but this isn't on it. I'm a guitar player in St. Louis and work often with my friend Tommy Brooks who is a tremendous steel player. We have opened for Buddy in the past here in STL and mourn his loss. We woodshed weekly on jazz standards. Such a small market for it here. Would love to find those sessions,so I'll scour Amazon for them. Are they released by Danny's family or under another title?

Neal, I also have the CD and both versions are from the same show. It seems they played 2 sets that night and the alternate set with Danny's intros of the band are on the CD. While as you say, they are very close, I prefer this version here. Sadly, here you can see the lifestyle choice that Buddy made (tobacco) that ultimately cost him years off his life. With Danny, we will never know...I am so grateful we will always have their incredible music.

Me too. When I first heard this tune on the radio, not knowing it had been released on a record, I flipped out! Bought the album that night and wore it out. Its still on rotation at my house.

The last time I was Blessed to experience the wonder that was Danny Gatton ( little knowing-- that would be the last time ) -- was at the West Springfield club JAXX.
I was by myself, down in front, on a night the joint was not crowed.
Of course Danny played slide with a partially filled bottle of Heinekens beer sloshing out ~ but later a girl from the audience handed Danny a long stemmed Red Rose ~ which incredibly and beautifully-- Danny ( like a magician ) made Sweet music with on the fretboard. RUBY RED ROSE PEDALS FLYING EVERY WHICH WAY. JUST AMAZING. ( I wish now, I would have scooped up and preserved those pedals )
In the course of that evening, 10 feet away, not knowing that such an understated ~ totally unique ~ TALENT ~ WOULD SOON HEARTBREAKINGLY PASS FROM THIS REALM ~ I felt tingly rivulets
Of hot tears streaming down my flushed cheeks ( flushed and tearful, not from beer ) but from being in the overwhelming presence of MISTER DANNY GATTON ~ A TRUE GRAND MASTER .

Danny was influenced by the 40's Big Band recording of Song of India by Tommy Dorsey. I grew up with that and still have the 78 somewhere. Great cover of the song. Nobody could ever keep up with Danny Gatton OR Buddy Emmons except Buddy Emmons & Danny Gatton! :)

so glad someone was smart enough to capture this... i just love how close the lines are from danny and buddy.. hard to tell at times if its guitar or steel.. i love how danny plays the dual note wes stuff .. his right hand technique is different than how wes did it etc.. its like wes Montgomery chicken pickin.. steve wolf locked down a great groove.. also loved buddies percussion on the steel.. true innovation.. just great.. so much to learn from one song.. you really need to listen to it many times to hear it all!! ty for upload

True masters of their instruments, wasn't at the show that night but saw Danny and Roy Buchanan at another little joint,Gallagers I think it was called. It was something really special and I needed to see that, had lost my wife to stupidity and divorce in 1988 so yeah they lifted my spirits. I swear Danny Gatton might have been the best damn electric guitar player on the planet, just majical how he could wring notes out of that old Tele. R.I.P Danny, miss you brother.Gods band kicks butt, has to !

I got the CD Years ago and spoke to Danny's mother. It is always cued up. So out of all the music I have played professionally of all genre's, listened to, many many years, I always come back to this recording made in 1978. It is truly inspirational. Kind of like the hokey pokey, "...and that's what it's all about!"

When Danny played with buddy Emmons Danny was at his best which was scary! The two played off each other Danny never fails to amaze me in his guitar prowess he makes it look so easy of course that’s not the case Danny was a genius period and the worlds most underrated guitarist and rolling stone didn’t even mention Danny what a shame I think the problem with Danny was he was just too good he played so many different styles had so many different techniques his hybrid right hand could pull off so many different sounds and hi fret playing was total mastery the man was untouchable on guitar then and now no one comes close of course that’s just an opinion!

I'd have to say that Danny had maybe one equal on the guitbox and that was his good friend Roy Buchanan.I have seen both of them separately and I can say that they were both tortured geniuses in life but onstage they were just magical geniuses musically.

Everything Danny did was just masterful. I was buying Cds through BMG and Columbia House in the early to mid 90's and saw Cruisin' Deuces in the small magazine that they'd send out with every order and I liked the picture of Danny and the hot rod so I put it on the next order form. When it arrived I put it in my player and expected a great song or two and was immediately blown away by everything on the album and took it to work and turned it over to my friend and co-worker John Meeker who had hand built his own telecaster. He borrowed it over the weekend and on Monday he returned it and I said What do you think of Danny Gatton ? He answered He is killer good and somewhere Danny is leading an all star cast of great players. I sure would like to have seen him Live. What a memorable show that would have been.I have since dug up everything I could find with Danny Gatton on it and I'll always listen to this one of a kind Master. RIP ol' Buddy

I walked into Record Rendezvous in Kennebunk ME, and the live album was playing. I said "Hey, is this Buddy Emmons?" and the fellow that owned the place said "Nope, Danny Gatton." I ended up buying the CD. This is still my favorite album. Not sure what's in print now, as there was a fight between the mom and wife, or some such, but I grabbed I guess the first incarnation of the live album. This version of Song of India is growing on my though...
