FLAT OUT (The History of Rally) - Episode 10 - The French Revolution

- FLAT OUT is the video series covering the history of rally from its beginnings way back in the 19th century, its evolution and where it is today, all the while looking at some of the greatest cars, drivers and stages to grace the worldwide sport.
Episode 10 covers roughly the years of 2000 - 2004. The World Rally Car ruleset had been implemented late in the last century, and without the binding contract of homologation specials to worry about, the Europeans were now being inclined to return to the dirt after many years' absence. Would they finally be able to crush the Japanese stronghold?

Your the only source I found for a basic history corse in all rally history, everyone just talks about group b, but after I learned about that I wanted to know how we got to Hyundai dominating rally today! Can’t wait for the next episode!
Glad you enjoy it!
What? Hyundai is not dominating rally today... They are pretty much equally successful with Toyota (BTW I'm rooting for Hyundai but let's be honest).
@@gerbazs gotcha gotcha, don’t know to much about modern wrc, all I see is headlines, and I only saw Hyundai winning
Do you feel sorry for Ford for so consistently coming second in so many different seasons?
Also at 5:10 I accidentally mixed up and cut out part of the original script, Peugeot did compete in the 2-liter cup in the 90's with the 306 Maxi.
They did eventually win in 2006 and 2007
Yeah a bit, but doesn’t the fiesta start to do well later on or closer to present?
It is so unfortunate that MSport - who runs the Ford WRC team - constantly being ignored by Ford itself, even though they showed from time to time that they can be very competitive and even win with enough support.
This series is epic. You are comparable to hundreds of thousand subs channel in F1 scene. Hope you achieve success in YT and provide us with many of great rally content like these.
I was waiting eagerly for this video, didn't disappoint me......nice work mate
Really glad we're onto my favourite era of the sport! Does feel like some things are missing, but it also paints the picture quite well of how the rallying landscape was shaping up competition wise. I feel some things that should be added in are the changing regulations onto the sport, with how the format of the rallies changed and became less of a marathon event and more of a sprint, less of a trek across the country/region and more locked around the service park format.
At the same time, I'm really glad for the inclusion of the other categories, often the smaller categories are overlooked in massive ways, so it's really good to know just what was happening below that led to the shape-ups above. And although there are omissions there (such as how Skoda and Hyundai and Seat were competing in the F2 category before moving up to the WRC, and the emmergence of the hatchback as the defining car shape, which led to the introduction of the Fabia replacement), the series still strikes a pretty good balance w the information it gives!
Good job overall, I'm hoping for more episodes! :D
I'd love to cover everything but its in my best interest to keep these videos as short and concise as possible, both for my mentality's sake and to keep the viewers' engaged. Hope you enjoy the upcoming episodes!
@@JackohMotors Oh ye i figured re: short and concise/to-the-point videos! Honestly can't fault you there, they're great primers too for getting into the sport :D
And yeah they've been amazing so far, the skill behind the low-poly 3d assets has been astonishing as well, great job :D I'm really looking forward to each new upload, keep it up fam you're doing great ^_^
Now can we get a 2nd season for FLAT Out talking about sportscar racing? Talking about group C Lmp1 Lmh etc
Perhaps sometime in the future
Another fantastic video, I will now comment for extra engagement
I absolutely love this series

Very nice editing
great Video thanks
Great addition to the series, thank you!
Thank you for this video. I've been wanting to get into the history of rally for a while and this was great start!
Great to se the series again!
By far my favorite era of rally is around 1974 with group 4 - 1986 with group b.
Another great video in the series, the only thing I missed is how the competitive WRC car is changed from being a sedan to a smaller hatchback.
I figured for better turning radius/shorter wheel base
Hey Jackoh, will you be continuing your flat out series beyond Ep 10?
Definitely, episode 11 is currently being scripted
@@JackohMotors Outstanding! Thanks for the info and all the hard work you put into producing the series. Can’t wait to see it once posted.
Lancia is still the most successful manufacturer in rallying.
5:00 the Impreza WRC2001 only won the title 2001 with Burns, not two. The WRC2003 (blob-eye) won in 2003 with Petter Solberg.
5:10 "Citroen had a more extensive in the preceding years" - nope. Both Citroen and Peugeot competed in the 2 litre cup together, just that Peugeot moved to the WRC with the 206 a little earlier.
5:21 You're history on the Xsara WRC is a bit off here. Citroen undertook 2 partial championship years in 2001 and 2002 with the Xsara WRC before committing to the championship full time in 2003. It never displayed a "rocky start" - nor was Loeb the headline driver in 2003, he was the third driver to McRae and Sainz but ended up besting both.
7:42 The JWRC did not have all cars identical until 2011 when it was converted to the Academy model where M-Sport supplied Fiestas. You show footage a lot of Suzuki Ignis's, but you had Ford, Citroen, Suzuki, MG, FIAT, Renault, Peugeot, VW, Opel all homologate S1600 cars for the JWRC between 2001 and 2010.
1. I was more meaning that the new GD / second generation of the Impreza WRC won the titles, not specifically the WRC2001.
2. I don't know why I wrote that bit like that but my original script does mention the 306 Maxi which I cut out for some reason lmao.
3. Yeah no denying that.
4. I should've probably explained that, I figured since I wasn't going to discuss the topic in any great detail again in the series I would give a quick comprehensive history and explanation of the rules, but yes the initial years did allow for different models to compete simultaneously.
The Peugeot looks like it has a big guppy mouth
