I have a wonderful; to me at least; plantain testimonial. I keep dried plantain rehydrated and covered in triple plantain tincture in the fridge year around. Especially for bite and stings. I wasn't being vigilant enough and my blood sugar dropped out on me. That wound up in a trip to the er and I was dehydrated on top of that. Everything worked out fine, but in trying every vein in my universe AND an iv AND blood draws every 4 hours, I came home looking like I had been a purple pin cushion. One elbow and wrist in particular were hot and painful. I put a cold poultice on each spot and wrapped them lightly so they could evaporate, pull and draw. When the poultice got dry about an hour later, I took then off an washed and rinsed both spots very gently with a mild soap and water. The difference was night and day. They were still purple, but 95% of he heat and pain was gone! And that's one reason why plantain is my favorite weed 😊

I just leave (leaf) it on and a slightly green thumb is left behind. If you garden there's plenty of minor injuries to go around.
I found nodding onion and stinging nettles in the yard.

@@makeoversbymeme2077 When I was researching, if needed on the spot you can use your own saliva to mush up the plantain and apply it. (You can wash the leaves if you have water). Some even use the leaf as well as a temporary bandaid by bending the stem around and making a hole in the leaf and pulling it through.

I do not know how it is that I have only just now discovered your channel! This video was amazing! Thank you! I have been a longtime believer in the healing properties of plantain. Many years ago, a co-worker of mine gave me some plantain major leaves to boil in water and apply via a compress to a rattlesnake bite that my malamute had suffered. It was too late for the administration of anti-venom medication and the vet could only recommend and dispense antibiotics. After 3 days of antibiotics the swelling had not gone down. The swelling responded to the plantain compresses almost immediately! I have made sure to have plantain growing and seeds saved ever since. I recently moved to a very dry, hot, desert area. No plantain growing naturally anywhere in sight here! I am so glad that I dug up several pots worth and took them with me from my old home. I shared with my mom how to make a spit poultice for when she gets bitten by ants or spiders while working in her garden. I'm sure she thought that I was a bit looney at first, until it started to work and relieved the pain, swelling and discomfort from the bites.
I look forward to watching more of your videos and have subscribed to your newsletter as well as having just purchased your Wild Remedies book. I can hardly wait for my book to arrive and to get started reading it!

Plantain lanceolata healed (almost within minutes) a black, buzzy advancing spider bite that was near my eye and melting my face! I had used all the other herb ideas and was walking by a patch when I remembered 'bug bites) did a spit poultice, immediately the buzzing was gone! 17:06
Now, on the top of my beloved weeds list!

Thanks, this was the most informative video on plantain that I have watched so far. I began using this plant about 10 years ago because I found it growing wildly on my property when I move in back in 2012. w Instead of killing it off like a weed I decided to do a little research to learn about it as I have never seen it before. I'm glad I did because I use it to treat minor wounds, put it in salads, cook with in some dishes, feed the cooked leaves and stems to my chickens mixed in with their feed and I've even canned some to use like a salted spinach. I'm thinking of trying to do a lacto-fermentation of it. The variety I have growing wild in my yard is the lanceolata. I let it grow wild as my soil is of poor clay constancy, but I've been working my yard to be more of a food and herb garden. It's nothing much to look at yet but I'm slowly adding more edible and medicinal things to use. I don't care to have a manicured lawn. Thanks again for making the video. I look forward in learning more about herbs from your channel.

Its amazing how tall, spreading, & lush in growth, broad leaf plaintain can be if you manage it in cultivated ground. It doesnt need to be stomped flat in a lawn or in a stony walkway for it to reach its best. Get yourself a plaintain patch & have medication on tap.

My first thing I did with plantain was to make a Tinture.
It sat in a dark cabinet for a long time. One day i woke up with 3 kidney stones. I know because I went to the E.R. And the just sent me home. The pain was like being in labor. So I grabbed the tincture praying it would help. As nasty tasting as it was. I swallowed about ¼ of a cup or more.
20 mins later I gave birth to all 3 stones. But they were shattered. I had a potty chair I was useing and it was like red sand. I didn't have anymore for about a year. And did the same thing. It's been years since I've had kidney stones. And I make it strong. I chop up the clean leafs. Air dry over night. It works on just about everything. Even my finger that the Dr.s wanted to cut off it looked like hamburgers. I got bit by a Recluse spider in the garden picking plantain. Late evening. Don't do that. Use gloves also.
I soaks my finger all day and night. I didn't loose my finger. In fact I'm typing with it . That was years ago
I've used it on everything. I'm already preparing for this year. ❤ love your books also Roselee I hope I spelt that right.🎉❤ IM STUCK KN BED RIGHT NOW. BROKE MY FOOT. I don't have any Cofrey Thank you for shareing with us folks that need your help.

I've known of this herb for a while and see it growing all over Australia. What I've recently observed is wild parrots mainly cockatoos and gallahs eat these and they seem to get a euphoric buzz out of it.
They actively seek it out, consume the root then behave in a very intoxicated manner. This has a quite a different effect on them to humans

You are a wonderful teacher. I'm not sure if the plantain locally (in SC) is the same. It has velvety leaves. They have the spikes with the seeds just like a wide leaf plantain. The leaves are small compared to the wide leaf plantain. I'm a bit nervus to use it. I have purchased wide plantain seeds and grown some of those, but not enough to make anything out of. Still, the video was great and as always a powerhouse of knowledge. ;-)

Right now the hole is big enough to put your thumb in well past the first knuckle. What would you recommend on fighting this with plantain? If you make a poultice, what would you put it in to allow the good stuff to escape and he’s the wound but not allow any of the plant material to escape and be caught in the wound? Honestly the best advice I have for you is to work with someone who directly has experience working with these issues. It's generally not just one plant or one thing, but a protocol that changes as the wound changes. Guido Masé is someone who I know specifically has experience in this realm, but many clinical herbalists do and they offer long distance consultations. Hello from Sweden! Thank you for all your awesome videos and spotify recordings. Here in Sweden my herbal teacher and most others that are into herbal medicine, say that it is useless to make oil infusions(to make salves) of plantain, plantago major, that it´s contstituents are not oil soluble. Do you have any information or research on this? In english speaking videos, thay all make plantain infused oils, and here I was disdained to hear that its useless and wishful thinking to think that you are extracting anything beneficial from plantain by infusing it in oil. I would love to know the research you use to support the oil soluble benefactory effects. If you get what I mean, sorry I am so tired so I can´t force myself to look up if I spelled everything correctly, but I hope you get me anyway. Thank you kindly in advance! Best Regards, Alex

@@HerbsWithRosalee Thank you for taking the time to answer me Rosalee! I really appreciate it! If you someday find out what substance is the one that is extracted through the oil infusion, please give me a shout, I will of course go on searching on my own but it sure would be nice to know what it is that makes the oil (later salve) work so well on skin issues, and not have every herbalist here in Sweden roll their eyes at me when I infuse the oil and then make a salve from it and they just say it probably is the oil itself that has a soothing efect, not the herb, plantain. I will try it though, just was a little torn since I have both inputs in my head fighting each other and no substancial fact to rely on, you know. Anyhow, thank you again and stay healthy, vibrant and beautiful as usual! Best Regards from a beginner, herbalist, Alex

This is my first time visiting your channel. I have to say that you have a lovely, uplifting and calm presentational style, not to mention a video chocked full of fascinating information about the Plaintain plant. You have a new subscriber! I wonder if your book can be found in UK?

Welcome! Rosalee's books can be found all over. Alchemy of Herbs is in several different languages. Wild Remedies is a bit newer. They are both excellent!

Hi, I have never juiced the leaves, so I don't have any experience with that. For dental health this past year, I have been chewing the leaves and swishing the "juice" around in my mouth and packing the mash against my gums for 20-ish minutes. I swallow the juice and compost the mash, though I have chewed it up and swallowed it on occasion. You could probably juice the leaves and then freeze the juice and the mash separately. I'd just freeze the leaves, though, since that is a lot easier. There are many ways to use plantain, though, so try a few!

May I ask: regarding the infused oil What do you mean hot water bath method? Thank you in advance.

Saludos! Glad you enjoyed the video. The hot water bath method is when you infused fresh or dried herbs into oil on really low heat, often a double boiler. If you're interested in learning more about how to make infused oils then you might be interested in my friend Kami's free oils workshop that is happening this week. Here's that link: bit.ly/3kNnR5P

Is it ok to wash the plantain leaves in water (before towel/air drying them) when they are dusty ? Could it have a negative impact on the benefits ? Thanks.

    • @HerbsWithRosalee
      @HerbsWithRosalee  2 роки тому +1

I try to avoid washing plants, especially if I am going to dry them (vs eating or tincturing fresh). But if they are really dusty then that is probably a good idea.

the functional medicine doctors say that problems with leaky gut have to do with the wrong stomach baceria. There is a bacteria which eats up the stomach lining if i remember right and so makes us reknew it. Lacking this we get leaky gut. Maybe plaintain helps with bad bacteria in the stomach or feeds the right stuff.

Do you know how many times you can harvest plantain leaves a year?

Being that plantain is usually found in disturbed environments, often in urban areas, is it safe to grow plants from seed that might have been treated/sprayed? I couldn't find any plantain in any of my usual wild areas but came across some plantain plants peeking through the snow on a city sidewalk and was wondering if the seeds will grow plants that are then safe to consume. Does anyone have any info? Essentially I just want to be sure nothing dangerous is passed on to the plants I plan on growing just because I got them from a city sidewalk.

Yikes... you had me hooked until the bit about how Plantain uptakes heavy metals. I assume one should be very careful about where the plant is sourced. My own acreage was once used as a disposal site for municipal sewage sludge some 20 years ago. I wonder if I should be concerned.

A soil test is the best way to know for certain. Check with your local extension office. These are often easy and pretty cheap.

Question: I have dried plantain leaves i am planning to make a bug bite salve with. However it sounds like fresh leaves are used for oils and salves. Do dried leaves loose their effectiveness?

    • @HerbsWithRosalee

I prefer fresh or freshly dried (less than a month old). You could always try with what you have and see how it goes.
