You are welcome Gloria!! I'm guessing you mean pine cuttings? As I said in the captions - subtitles, this is the first time I'm trying to root new growth of Japanese black pine after candle pruning. My guess is that it will be more successful than Japanese white pine is. We will see! Have a great day!

Is the potting medium you are using for the cuttings perlite? Also what strength of rooting powder are you using?
I explain everything in the captions - subtitles. Yes the medium is 100% perlite and I'm using 2% IBA. The stronger stuff! Cheers!

Is it Pinus thunbergii 'Zuisho'? I know that that is a variety that root quite readily than other pines.
No, it's not. "Zuisho" is a cultivar of Pinus parviflora. Personally, I don't think that it roots better than other parvifloras. It is just that as a cultivar it has better foliage than the species, so people prefer to root it than graft it onto thunbergii, even if success rate is around 10% at best. Grafted parvifloras onto 2 needle pines, tend to change their foliage character given that 2 needle pines are much stronger and vigorous. This high flow of sap produces longer, thicker and darker needles. Thus rooting and not grafting. This is just Pinus thunbergii and I will update with a video on the success rate, if any. Cheers!

Could you please share company and model of the grow lights you'll use with this Black Pine project.

Of course Chris! I've tried several different grow lights. The best I've used is probably Mars hydro SP150. But I decided that it's best to use normal led lights and not the developed grow lights for greenhouse use. Normal house leds with very strong lum and neutral white color are more than adequate. If you are not growing fruits, vegetables or flowers, the usual leds are great (and last longer in high humidity environment) . So from now on, I've bought some very good leds, I've got 2 spare waiting in case one goes bad and that's all I need for grafting and cuttings. I can show you the specified one I'm using if you need to. Cheers!
I didn’t know that you could take the candles that you remove and root them. What has been your success rate of rooting pine candles in the past?
I talked about it in the captions - subtitles. This is the first time I'm trying this. My thought is that new tissue has cells that could probably turn into roots relatively easy, even though the hormones are probably against it now. We'll see. I will update on that. Even if one or two root, it will be a gain, considering these get trushed otherwise. Parviflora can have up to 10% success rate. Thunbergii looks like it might have better chances. Cheers!

Hi. Any news on the cuttings? After multiple tries i succeeded in getting 1 to root.
That's awesome Timothy! No, mine have failed. I have 2 3 that are still green but I'm not optimistic. It seems that JBP doesn't feel like rooting at this time of the year, but making foliage. That said, I will definately try again next year, and the next and.... Maybe some other mediums, maybe different conditions..
