I tried to follow along with an Alpine SWS-12D2 but the volume never gets auto populated and no response graph shows up. :( I am sure it is because I can't find all the fields required. Ah, if I edit the driver in the project and set Vas it graphs for me, not sure why it doesn;t bring the Vas from the driver I created. This seems much more difficult to use than bassbox pro granted I have never used bassbox pro for much so IDK if they are similar in functionaliity.
Unfortunately ti looks like WinISD doesn't take Le or semi-inductance into consideration, both of which will appreciably change the response at bass frequencies for today's long x-max, high-power car audio woofers, particularly if they don't have "shorting rings" in the motor. That's why I prefer to use Hornresp for design work. Hornresp is a bit more difficult to understand though - which is why I developed my BOXPLAN Excel workbooks - just choose the one that matches the box you'd like to build, and it chucks out the corresponding Hornresp parameters :-)

Winisd says the ports need to be 69cm long, does this mean I need 2x 69cm long ports or is it 2x35cm ports? The length of the port doesnt change in Winisd based on the number of ports used so I dont know if I need the total length of all the ports combined to be what Winisd recommends or if they all need to be the full 69cm length.

The box volume in winisd tells the net internal volume (gross volume minus the woofer displacement, port displacement and any space occupied by bracing) or does it tell the gross volume ?
I am not 100% sure of the context. But a linear response means that there is no big peak in the output -- if you plot the output you get a flat line that extends down well below 30hz.
If you change the END CORRECTION value, is Winisd showing any change in vent length or tuning ??? For me nothing is changing, whether I use 0.732 or 2.227 as end correction.
@@DIYAudioGuy yeah... I downloaded and installed winisd 2 months back. I hope mine is latest one. But end correction not working in mine either. However if the change in vent length because of end correction is not huge, we can ignore ....but I'm not sure ...
The conventional wisdom is to tune a bit higher or go with the sealed enclosure if you like that kind of music. My personal preferences to tune for a flat frequency response and a low f3, that way it sounds good no matter what music you have to be playing at the moment. But that's just me.
@@DIYAudioGuy Right on! Iv'e got a rockford T216, and been scratching my head on where to even start. Your videos are helping point me in the right direction though!
Hey I've got a question about winisd. I've been designing and comparing boxes for my next trunk build and I'm a bit confused. Does/can winisd account for port placement? There's a big difference in port+subs facing forwards compared to only one or the other facing forwards when squeezing two 15s into a trunk. As I understand it the air pressure/sound wave coming from your port will synchronize or become in phase with the pressure/wave coming from the front of your driver and give you a bass boost. Is there a way to know or graph when these waves become In and out of phase? Does this effect still take place when your port is not facing the same direction as your subs, would it change the frequency at which the waves become in phase?
WinISD assumes that you are in a very large room and it does not provide any information about port location. The box size is net, meaning it does not take into account port displacement.
How do i decide the box tuning freq. I want a sub going low and not lossing those dbs. My sub has a fs of 35hz. So how do i decide how much to go low in box tuning. What parameters should i look for in win isd ?
does winisd pro calculate in the port and driver displacement when showing the graph line? say i want a box at 2.8 after displacement. do i add in the displacement when i put in the box size in winisd. or just the end volume?
Is my box too big ? I have a jbl s2-1224 on a 3.5 cubic feet box ported box The recommended size is 2.5 I barely feel any air coming out from the port The vent diameter is 13 x2 inch My port is 31inch long My port air velocity is good too Is the port too small ? The port is tuned at 25hz by the way and 23hz at -3db I feel like the port isn't doing much even when i play below tuning frequency with a bit of power My sub also makes a engine like noise whenever there is excursion which is weird because at 25hz thats where im supposed to have the least of excursions According to the graph there is overexcursion only as from 20hz which i never play
Yes, the noise you are hearing is probably the sub unloading. An infrasonic filter will help. But I think you need a smaller box. The lack of port air velocity is a good thing, no chuffing is what you want.
@@DIYAudioGuy at what frequency should i set the infrasonic filter ?? And the port barely pushing any air is a good thing ? As i dont really play that loud and that low i will be using the sub but how do i know beforehand when i design another box in the future that the box is too big or port opening too small for an specific woofer ?
Winisd alternatives don't exist for Android. Except for possible speaker box lite but I'm not willing to spend 6 dollars on a 1 month subscription to find out

For Mac Users (this may have been said already) I finally found a way to run WinISD. Wine and WinBottler are free programs that have been recommenced to run WinISD without the hassle of virtual machines, bootcamp, parallels, etc. But for me, both of those program wouldn't run properly but simply not opening, or quitting/crashing when trying to load WinISD under advance options, respectively. Nearly giving up, I found Wine-Stable (Wine-Stable 7 the most recent version, but Wine-Stable 5 is what worked for me. I could be wrong, but during install I selected both 32 bit and 64 bit as an option. After installing Wine-Stable 5, I am finally able to run WinISD on my Macbook Pro, without having to pay for a windows subscription. I hope this helps anyone with a Mac!
Loving your video's, 3rd one in a row. Great work! WinISD is something I'm still learning myself, people like you and some others have been cool enough to break it down a little more for me. Appreciated!
LoudSpeakerDatabase is also a fantastic source for T/S Parameters (as it already has pre-populated files!), but it's user contributed so there's a bit of lag between new drivers and files being available.
@@DIYAudioGuy It's great for people like me who always mess up the "order on entering the specs" or who struggle to find specs for certain drivers. It's sooo helpful when it's already there and all I have to do is click the "WinISD" link and download the file. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.
Thank You so much for telling I spent 30 min entering the parameters it worked in the end but I'll still use LSD. Should have read this comment before doing lol
Winisd is great WHEN you can get the parameters correct in the correct order! That is always the frustrating part for me.Or when all the data is entered and winisd says it's wrong. But when it works, it is awesome!!
@@DIYAudioGuy Maybe I have a real old version. It flat out will not let me continue when its is not all 100% correct.Ill delete and re-install and try that. Really is a insane FREE program!
@@jondoe6618 I think there is an article on Home Theater Shack that tells you how (in terms of the order) that you enter the parameters in order to get it to work. Tried everything but this article worked for me Finally.
Your subsonic filter can greatly reduce air velocity which allows the use of a smaller port. I set my subsonic filter at the subs f3, but some also recommend setting at 2-3Hz below tuning, or one half octave below tuning.
That's a good point. I've got a video on setting an account infrasonic filter, I never thought about the impact the filter would have on port noise. But if you're cutting the signal you're going to be cutting the port noise as well. ua-cam.com/video/iWRoIho7A7c/v-deo.html
A few hz below tuning is still cutting audible frequencies , a ported enclosure still plays below tuning , my box is tuned at 33hz but I still get audible notes at 28hz no way I would cut it at 32 or 31hz......imhave mine set at about 20-22hz that's much more reasonable
@7 Logik Well it also depends on the slope (6db, 12db, 24db, etc.) applied power, type of subs, enclosure size, and type of music you're playing (Rock, Hip Hop, Rebassed, etc.). The crossover filter doesn't just abruptly cut off frequencies, but it rolls them off at a given rate depending on the slope. So with a 33Hz tuning if the filter was set at 30Hz with a 12dB slope you would still be able to play 28Hz with no problem. The lowest recommended is 1/2 octave below tuning which would be 24.75Hz at 33Hz tuned.
For the life of me I cannot enter the T/S parameters of a Sundown Zv6 12" without receiving an integrity check error within Winisd. I've allowed it to auto calculate as well as followed the help guide provided within Winisd with no success. The SD parameter is absent from the sundown site, I'm not sure if that is contributing to integrity failure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
I'm so glad I found your channel. How did I not know about it sooner? Lots of technical stuff which I love. One question I have or would like to see a demonstration of is dampening or dampening factor. How ohm load effects it and spl/SQ and such.
I am not an expert on amplifiers, but from what I gathere damping factor is a way to express how well an amplifier controls the cone movement. It's one of those things that's important up to a point. Like everything else with audio there are diminishing returns.
@@DIYAudioGuy appreciate the reply. Its one of those im not even sure if or how they can measure it. Strage thing I've noticed when playing with the meter is that seems good damping seems more efficient with spl. Ya you can gain a db going to half ohm or whatever. But at the cost of 2x the amperage draw and sloppy cone control. but also not the case always.
I always try to express the importance of high damping factor when playing low frequencies it’s basically the amplifiers ability to control the incoming eddy currents
How many decimal places does the unit conversion need? I cannot get the checksum to pass no matter what I do. Had the same problem last time I tried WinISD years and years ago, and it seems it's still an issue. Incredibly frustrating; everyone always talks about how useful and powerful the program is, and I'd love to not have to do everything with pencil and paper like I have for the last 30 years... :(
If you would, could you make a video explaining the differences between the older versions of winisd vs the new one (one youre using). I have only ever run an older version (0.44) and it is a completely different than the new one you just showed. Part of the reason being that the new one's auto fill for the T/S parameters screws up sometimes. Manufacturer will have one spec one way and winisd will say its wrong. Other than that I didnt know the new version has an excursion chart which I desperately wanted after using Hornresp (also another program you should touch on).
Please HELP anyone! I've built myself a sealed subwoofer that has an internal volume of 20 liters (2.5 cm thick, 32 cm wide, 30cm tall and 36 cm length, all external measurements). I've used the Ground Zero GZIW 200 driver (8") , and for this driver the manufacturer actually recommends a 17 liter vented enclosure with 1 single port ( 7cm , 2.76" wide, 24cm, 9.45" long). It being sealed sounds great, especially since it's in use in a quite small room, thucked under my desk , but i'm curious about converting this box to a ported one and thus increase the output. I've been playing in WinISD, tried to figure out what tune frequency i'd want (listening mostly to music) so i "decided" on a 30 hz, but i don't get it based on that ISD reports back, just what specs should this port have. I chose a round shaped port which i'm going to 3d print, but for a 10.2 cm port (which i'd find right considering the size of the box), it said 128.36 cm long, that's 3 times the length of the actual box. Also, 1st port resonance is 133, 88, is that good, bad, unknown? Could i also make multiple ports in order to cut down on the required length? What do i do? Thanks, i love subwoofers and audio generally speaking, and i'm also into DIY wherever i can, but getting the basics here doesn't seem that straight forward unfortunately.. :(

@@DIYAudioGuy yeah... I downloaded and installed winisd 2 months back. I hope mine is latest one. But end correction not working in mine either. However if the change in vent length because of end correction is not huge, we can ignore ....but I'm not sure ...
by the way is it possible to share your email id or whatsapp number please ?? I want to share some private info. Not about winisd though....

Have any suggestions for a port tuning for rock/metal? Or think sealed might be the best way to go?
Once you have it in WinISD you just model it. 35 is a good place to start for a car. Tune it higher if you want it louder, lower if you want it lower.
does winisd pro calculate in the port and driver displacement when showing the graph line? say i want a box at 2.8 after displacement. do i add in the displacement when i put in the box size in winisd. or just the end volume?
Unfortunately it does not. You have to account for the driver, the port, and any internal bracing. I typically do the math on a spreadsheet.
How add the blue line ?
I started a new project, blue line was the result of the same subwoofer in a sealed enclosure.
Is my box too big ?
I have a jbl s2-1224 on a 3.5 cubic feet box ported box
The recommended size is 2.5
I barely feel any air coming out from the port
The vent diameter is 13 x2 inch
My port is 31inch long
My port air velocity is good too
Is the port too small ?
The port is tuned at 25hz by the way and 23hz at -3db
I feel like the port isn't doing much even when i play below tuning frequency with a bit of power
My sub also makes a engine like noise whenever there is excursion which is weird because at 25hz thats where im supposed to have the least of excursions
According to the graph there is overexcursion only as from 20hz which i never play
I have a question for my build. How would I get ahold of you massager or email?

I need to n learn how to use that software..
It's a pain in the @$$, but the price is right.
Winisd alternatives don't exist for Android.
Except for possible speaker box lite but I'm not willing to spend 6 dollars on a 1 month subscription to find out
Good to know!
@DIY Audio Guy
You need to remember the box volume DOES NOT include the port volume, WINISD treats these as two separate things
Correct. You also have to take into account the displacement of the driver as well as any internal bracing.
Could I send you a 6th order design and could you model it in WinISD for me? I only have a chromebook, no windows software.

Awesome!
Loving your video's, 3rd one in a row. Great work! WinISD is something I'm still learning myself, people like you and some others have been cool enough to break it down a little more for me. Appreciated!
Glad to help!
LoudSpeakerDatabase is also a fantastic source for T/S Parameters (as it already has pre-populated files!), but it's user contributed so there's a bit of lag between new drivers and files being available.
I will have to check that out!
Hmm I tried using the LoudSpeakerDatabase driver and WINISD shows the red sign so it won't work in my case
@@ashyouknow7420 Ahh, that sucks. I wonder what parameter didn't pass integrity checks.
Winisd is great WHEN you can get the parameters correct in the correct order! That is always the frustrating part for me.Or when all the data is entered and winisd says it's wrong. But when it works, it is awesome!!
I find that often times it works even if the driver parameters aren't right.
@@DIYAudioGuy Maybe I have a real old version. It flat out will not let me continue when its is not all 100% correct.Ill delete and re-install and try that. Really is a insane FREE program!

😎

My win ISD says all the drivers fail even the pre-saved ones that came with the application.
Freedom units are bollocks, innit.
LOL!
@@sittdogg there's a device called an audio precision, the big manufacturers should all have access to one.
I always try to express the importance of high damping factor when playing low frequencies it’s basically the amplifiers ability to control the incoming eddy currents
no, you can't use WinISD on a mac, you may use MacISD instead.
😂🤣🤣🤣
REW SOFTWARE is a life saver when you don't know your TS parameters of any speaker/subwoofer
why is there no option for a series tuned quasi 6th! man ive been trying to find a program to model this box for days now
when i went into the cone excursion the green line was at 0mm peak the whole way is that a good thing or not?
How many decimal places does the unit conversion need? I cannot get the checksum to pass no matter what I do. Had the same problem last time I tried WinISD years and years ago, and it seems it's still an issue. Incredibly frustrating; everyone always talks about how useful and powerful the program is, and I'd love to not have to do everything with pencil and paper like I have for the last 30 years... :(
That's not fun! I would just avoid doing unit conversions and change the units in winisd to match the ones given by the manufacturer.
I need to give Hornresp a try for sure!
What if i can't find the large-signal parameters for my sub
WinISD accepted Hifonics Zeus ZXS-15D2 Xmax 26mm peak, but not 14mm linear Xmax. When i did use xlim 26mm and xmax 14 then the integrity check was all good. Its like math classes i hated :D
