The Return of Stampede Pass

"Rugged" doesnt even begin to describe Stampede Pass. The legendary mainline of the Northern Pacific Railroad is back in action following a decade of slumber. Now it is the Burlington Northern Santa Fe taking on the 2.2% grades over the Cascades with Dash-9s and SD-40s. I was there. I did all the power connections from the power company to the switching gear on the BN. I worked with Mike, their electrical engineer and was there when they reopened the line

I remember seen this and other train videos like this on the RFD TV channel. I really miss that videos: the BNSF Stocktown Tower, the Rio Grande route, the Southern Pacific Tennesse Pass, the Union Pacific in Modesto CA... a lot of them. Greetings from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico✌

Stampede Pass was the NP's crossing of the Cascades, Snoqualme Pass is a bit farther to the north, and it was MILW's crossing of the Cascades.

Now if only the Burlington Northern would come back, and free from the clutches of that greedy old coot in Nebraska. I sure miss Cascade Green. It came into being shortly before I did, and it was all I knew in my youth, growing up as a fourth generation Western Washingtonian. I'd be happy if we could see more of the other OG liveries - NP, SP&S, CB&Q... And for crying out loud, bring back the Warbonnets and Bluebonnets! The Omaha Orange has been played out to death at this point.

At around 2:20, the milepost marker has a sign that says "test mile". I'm curious of what that sign means.

A test mile is a actual 100% measured mile. There is a sign at both ends of it for a engineer to check his counter on the control stand to see if the counter for that locomotive is accurate or not. Counters can be off at times so using the measured mile lets the engineer know how off it is and adjust to it per trip.

Milwaukee Rail had a big rail shop in the port of Tacoma (now a container terminal) where they repaired box cars and Locomotives. I think it closed around 1975
