In my opinion, the movie didn't even try to be romantic. Suzumes whole crush was basically about Souta looking familiar to her. Like another mystery to unfold. That's actually one part I really liked about the movie. It focused more on general relationships with friends and family instead of one potential partner. Showing how in difficult times even Disasters can connect and bring you positive new encounters.

If Your Name is 75% Romance 25% Fantasy, Suzume is the opposite with 25% romance 75% Fantasy. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the movie so much, I don’t think anything will ever compare to Your Name universal appeal but I’m happy Shinkai takes on these many different stories and themes. I want to watch it again now

I appreciate how this movie stayed away from the romance to an extent. Instead choosing to make it more about relationships with people who helped her on her journey. The conflict was bigger than the romance instead of being about it I guess?

There's in my opinion a big reference to Your Name in Suzume, as she wears a "akai ito", the red thread which symbolizes fate and connection in Japanese culture, on her school uniform, reminding the red string Mitsuha wears in her hair!
And like everyone I loved Suzume so so much, cried a lot when I realized it was about 2011 🥲

    • @mohammadzekereya9311
      @mohammadzekereya9311 Рік тому +4

Also with the thread being a representation of time and in the end , its sort of like time travel(without spoiling).
Also there the guy brings the girl from the dead and here suzume brings souta back from technically being dead.

I LOVED Suzume, I don't think it's better than Your Name, but it's my favorite. Seen it 3 times already and I cry every time. I do think this is not a romantic film, I mean it has romance on it, but the spiritual part was my favorite theme, how it deals with grief, I thought it was beautiful and the message is so powerful. So great you got to go the premiere, I also missed the RADWIMPS concert in my city, I cried

Honestly, I love this movie, and as expected with every shinkai movie, I cried at the end. Honestly suzume just felt a bit different and fresh compared to other shinkai movies, but in a good way! I really liked the fast paced story that brings you right in to the action. The whole idea of this movie was really interesting and unique.
And the comedy was gold, I really liked how naturally the story switches from lighthearted comedy adventure, to a more serious tone. Also daijin was my absolute favorite character, he was so silly and cute!!!i just couldn't hate him. He was so innocently evil, like a little gremlin.
Honestly, I cant choose between this and your name, both movies have their own qualities that makes them great, I love them both equally!
Overall I rate this movie a 9/10, it has its flaws, but I really really enjoyed it

Wow you've just said EXACTLY what I feel about Suzume! Indeed Your Name and Suzume are two very different movies that touch on pretty different themes. I like Suzume's pacing and character building along the way, and just as you said the comedy was gold (e.g. the car ride to Suzume's original hometown). It if were given a bit more of the development of Suzume-Sato's arc and Daijin - maybe a few minutes on each imho - it would have been 10/10! But overall, I enjoy this movie throughout!😉👍

Last week, I went to the cinema to watch Suzume and to be completely honest, I absolutely loved the movie 😭 💙 ✨️
The animation, the narration and the characters were incredible, and obviously I started crying in the middle of the movie because the romance and fantasy that this movie carries is amazing ✨️ a round of applause to Makoto Shinkai for it.
The movie made me feel the same feeling I felt when I first saw "Howl's Moving Castle", the beautiful and healthy romance between Suzume and Souta was so magical and precious that I couldn't stop watching the movie with tears in my eyes.
I loved your review, greetings from Argentina!

I love "Suzume" way mooooore than other two pieces is because in this piece, Shinkai pay most of all the focus on Suzume's own journey and try to tell a complete story with this character, so we can enjoy whole 2 hour just with Suzume and fall in love with her strong characteristic.

I don't mind the romance part is not so strong in this piece, actually I am very impress to see that finally a male Japanese director is trying not to pay too much attention on boy and girl's romance and the adolescence of teenage young man.
Also he designed a gentle, mature, well educated male character to travel with Suzume this time, which could help Suzume truly grown up and ready to become an adult to face future, and stop to show the undisguised sexual views to serve males in most of Japanese anime always had done and that always made me feel uncomfortable.

This movie is one of the most beautiful portraits I've seen of how we deal with trauma, loss and memory. Crying is inevitable when you tell a story with as much passion and humanity as Makoto Shinkai ✨

Your Name OST: Date (and Date 2). You're welcome.
I was reading this interview with Makoto Shinkai and it's so sad that Suzume was originally about the love story between two girls but he had to change it because his director said so. He literally didn't want a boy-meets-girl romance so much that he turned him into a chair 😭 I think the romance would have worked so well considering his ability to convey emotions and storytelling :( again, kind of sad but hopefully, he will have more freedom with future projects.

Suzume was beautiful. I remember crying for Kimi no Nawa and Tenki no Ko but I didn't for this one. It was more of like my heart felt so moved..that kind of feeling. The art was wonderful like it's been 3 years and I forgot how beautiful Shinkai-sensei's movies are. This one was definitely more of a fantasy than the romance which I really liked. I learn so much from Shinkai-sensei movies. I really needed to see this one. I always had trouble to leave my past and I keep dwelling around it, the people who were in it last time when it was long gone. After watching this, it gave me a clearer insight that I should embrace it and continue doing my best to live. I can now really move on. I wish I can watch the movie for the 1st time all over again. Looking forward to his next work maybe in 3-4 years. This is definitely not better than Kimi no Nawa imo. The impact and emotions that Kimi no Nawa had was at another level. I felt that Tenki no Ko and Kimi no Nawa had more of the emotional aspect than Suzume. It might be just me but yea. I'll give this the same rating as Tenki no Ko like a 8-8.5/10. Nice movie with good lessons.

Suzume just had such a fantastic story and the deep message of dealing with grief, childhood and what's left behind from natural disasters.
And yes, the action and fantasy elements were so well done. It reminded me a mix of Howls Moving Castle and Ride your Wave.

I’m a little sad you didn’t touch more on the part where you find out the truth about who younger Suzume actually saw in the ever after :( that part really got to me, when her older self started telling her how she was going to meet people who will love her just as much as her mom did really got to me 😭

You know, as much as so many love it, I couldn't connect with Your Name. I didn't relate with the story or characters. Suzume, however, really spoke to me. I love the good, polite, and brave, but still believable heroine. I loved the determined Mr. Chair (Soto), and the sometimes adorable, sometimes creepy, and sometimes pitiful Mr. Cat (Daijin). The loss which Suzume faces in this movie moved me to tears. The fast pacing kept me engaged, and I loved the almost nonstop humor. Suzume felt like a kids movie and dealt with both growing up and parenthood, and as an adult, both my inner-child and the parental side of me appreciated that. Suzume was the modern Disney movie I've been yearning for.

This movie was amazing. It had me in the feels a lot, mostly whenever Suzume's childhood was on screen. As a parent, seeing the tragedy of a little girl losing her family and all alone was gut-wrenching. The repressed memories and all of that really deep storytelling had me. I also loved the adventure vibe throughout and the Daijin's part in the story. All in all, this movie "got me" more than Your Name, and I am very glad I got to experience it.

i liked suzume, i would even say ive enjoyed it more than weathering with you. What i liked abt this one is how makoto took risks, instead fo going again towards the same themes of his previous 2 movies, he actually tried to bring something new to his works. I really liked the themes of self love, closing doors, moving forward. Ppl be saying he romance was bad but for me there was almost no romance at the story, sure suzume loved souta, but i never felt souta liked her in that way, sure i think he loved her at the end but not in a romantic way. It felt more like a platonic love imo. I know he uses supernatural themes before but i felt this one had it more present in the story. The final scene was very moving, you know when she goes through the last door. Now in regards of your name, i still think your name was better, what i felt watching that movie i think ill never experience something like that again.

@@cinemoni I loved it so much! The movie was beautiful and the soundtrack was amazing! But I understand what you're saying about their love being more platonic than romantic, they felt more like older brother and little sister than lovers. Besides their age difference despite not being huge (I'd guess 5-6 years seeing he had been studying for his teacher's exam for 4 years so that'd make him at least 22) is still considerable. When the worm was about to attack Tokyo for a second I feared it was the climax of the movie until I checked my watch and saw that we were only halfway through😅I really enjoyed the pace of the third act with her aunt and Souta's friend despite being a stark change from the first and second acts. One detail I also really enjoyed is that Suzume actually kept changing clothes and hair styles as she met new people along her way.
Thank you for bringing this movie into my attention! I'd seen Your Name previously but I had no idea this was coming out so I'm really glad I got to watch it on the big screen 🥰

Suzume jumping through the door into the Ever-After and saying she was going to save the person she loved and the whole intense scene of her saving Souta, for me was very convincing that there was love between the two characters.
Sure it wasn't deeply established, but more recently blossomed. Suzume was a deeply conflicted character and her only character development was not just for her to fall in love and I really appreciated that.
This was an amazing film and I think you are doing yourself a disservice if you watch it with the mentality of trying to compare it to Your Name. ❤

It reminded me of the road-trip and fantasy stories I watched/read as a kid, like the Hobbit. 🗝🚪🌌 Hit me right in the feels with the references to real-life catasrophies and mythology. The movie really captures the spirit of what a good fantasy story should be imo. ♥

I think ultimately Suzume is about learning to cope with the death of a loved one. Very similar to children who chase lost voices. Suzume is a good movie but Your Name will always be Shinkai's best movie. I hope Shinkai takes a step back, take some time off and make something different. Something that we as an audience would not expect. There are recurring patterns in his films. He should take risks. It might be worth it.

I just came out of the cinemas and I adored this movie!! I think it might be my favorite of his works. I liked Your name but not as much as everyone else (The garden of words and Dareka no manazashi were the ones I enjoyed the most). Even though I was still in school I remember very well the 3/11 earthquake. It was all over the news in my country and I remember watching videos of the tsunami on UA-cam and being so afraid of them that I still have nightmares about it. So yeah this movie hit all the emotional beats for me. I need to rewatch it, I think it’s his magnum opus.

I managed to go into Suzume completely blind-I didn’t watch any trailers or checked out the synopsis. and oh wow… Suzume is certainly my favorite Makoto Shinkai movie. I had no idea that it was about earthquakes which was a pleasant and emotional surprise as I’m Turkish. I adore Shinkai’s emotional realism and soft-worldbuilding. I felt the same heartbreak and gut-wrenching emotions I felt while looking at the empty hollow squares after the rubbles were all lifted up. people used to live here. people had memories here. and now half of them are dead and the other half was forced to abandon the city.
I absolutely fell in love with this movie. I cannot find the words to fully express just *how* much. It hit so so close to home. it is certainly the most important work of Shinkai. ❤

The music and its timing with the visuals was so good. The song "Sky Over Tokyo" was especially eerie. Also, I don't know why when the movie ended and it went to a blank screen and then the credits started rolling with the traditional Radwimps OST-- I started sobbing! Makoto Shinkai knows exactly what he wants, the main idea of the story is the trauma of the earthquake and how people went through this. The country where I live have also a lots of earthquakes, both small and big one, during the watching in the theater, i can easily cry even with the music where the earthquake happens in the movie. A lots of people have mistaken it, the movie itself focus mainly on the disaster rather than the romance (of course he is good at romance and add a little bit in it). That’s why the box office in Japan are so high, cuz people shared the same trauma there. In my opinion, suzume is at the same level of your name, or even surpasses your name in some perspective.

Glad you enjoyed it. I liked it more than Weathering. Your Name is still the top on my list of Shinkai films. But going through this film, I wish someone at least acknowledge Shinkai's 2011's film, Children Who Chase Lost Voices. Seeing Suzume twice got me kind of rewatching that film. The theme of life and death is very strong in both films and that I can think of much from both of his films. Agatha, the world from the depths was a reference in Suzume which was the world in Children Who Chase Lost Voices. When Suzume went deep in the tunnels to seal that Tokyo gate, it felt like Asuna going underground to Agatha. The place where Suzume opens the door felt like the gate of life and death from Children Who Chase Lost Voices, you can even look at the skies to compare too. But yeah, in my mind when I see this Shinkai film, it takes me back more than his making of Your Name to his 2011 film. Let me know what you think about Children Who Chase Lost Voices too.

I loved this movie!! Suzume is an incredible film. This was a great review. Well done. Just a few thoughts. The reason Suzume is so connected to Souta so quickly is that she recognizes him from seeing him as a young girl in the Ever-after when her older self and Souta saved her. It's the cool time travel aspect to the movie and makes Suzume so heroic after seeing the full movie.
Also i believe there weren't any character cameos but there were scenery cameos from most of his other films. I have to watch again to be sure. Cameo wise - the teacher from Your Name is the main character from The Garden of Words. She speaks of the magic of Twilight and she can also be seen as one of the teachers who get Sayaka from the broadcast booth near the end. I know the male protagonist is in there also.
I also cannot wait to see what Shinkai's next project will be.

@IronMan-jg3ed Have to say you're completely wrong in this regard - the storyline is amazing. Based upon the very real tragedy of the March 2011 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Each spot in the movie has had a natural disaster occur there. It's an incredible story of grief and loss and friendship. It's not meant to be a romance. You're very wrong sorry to say

    • @christophercafe8464
      @christophercafe8464 Рік тому

@IronMan-jg3ed well since about 96% of people think this is an amazing movie then you are in the vast minority in your idea of the film. Not every film works for everyone. This didn't work for you and that's fine. I'm not here to change your mind but just know that it's YOUR own self that isn't grasping the concepts. The movie isn't weird at all.

I watched last week and it was visually beautiful like everything Makoto Shinkai directs. But the romance (crush?) was so bad. The female lead feelings didn't seem real. There wasn't any moment in the movie that made me think "oh, I understand why she's falling in love". She just seemed reckless. In the end, for me Suzume was a story about how far a hormonal teenager girl can go for a hotter older dude. Despite the fantastic elements also present in his other films, Makoto Shinkai movies were always about humanity. This one failed a little bit in this aspect. Besides, Suzume is a visual masterpiece and the soundtrack was amazing.

Just because there are recurrent themes don’t mean they are the same movies. Miyazaki makes coming of age movies during times of war, Shinkai makes romance movies during natural disasters.
I really loved Suzume! It really exceeded my expectations and I loved that there were a lot of funny moments as well 😊.

Daijin was leading them to the open doors, not opening them himself 😢 he just didn’t want to be trapped in that place anymore. He wanted to be loved. And we ALL disliked him for the majority of the movie, I will never forgive Shinkai for making me dislike this cute kitty for 90 minutes. I will also never forgive Miyazaki for other heavy spoiler reasons. 😭

I went into this film without watching any trailers or reading anything about it, so I was basically completely blind. NOTHING could've prepared me for the sight of a cute little kitten running down the street being chased by a three-legged chair, that was legitimately the funniest thing I've seen in the cinema in a long time.
I definitely enjoyed Suzume, but it didn't match Your Name in terms of quality for me. The score and animation were absolutely stellar though, but I found it really uneven tonally and pacing-wise, and I generally didn't find the characters all that interesting aside from Suzume herself. To be fair though, that's what I felt when I first watched Your Name, and that film is now one of my favourite anime films, so maybe the same thing will happen when I watch this again.

I'd rank the modern shinkai films as:
    1. Your Name
    2. Weathering With You
    3. Suzume
And occasionally Weathering with You comes out on top - all three (and Garden of Words) are terrific though

  • @curesaul5749

I have now seen the modern Shinkai trilogy. Your Name was something I liked but didn't love. I can understand why people would be so emotionally attached, but for me I felt like it was too overhyped. Weathering With You is something I surprisingly liked a lot more. I got much more engaged with the characters and story. People said it was Shinkai trying to replicate the charm of Your Name, but I think it was an improvement. I just watched Suzume today. It was a really enjoyable movie. I love how it was mostly a story centered on Suzume and not their romance. Although I didn't like the age gap. Enpecially when this was meant to be a romance between two girls. that would've been way better. I also love how this is very different from his past two movies and manage to stand out well. Also like usual, the animation and soundtrack was good. This once again makes me excited for the future of Shinkai's career. He's NOT the next Miyazaki, but he will continue to create films that leaves emotional impacts for the future.

The only complaints i have is that
One...i missed that little cameos that he adds in his other movies
Two...the music was amazing... but it didn't hit the highs as Your name... specially the title track ...you remember how in the final sequence of your name...all that meteor and stuff was going on with amazing "Sparkle" playing in bg
Third...i think the movie can be 15 minutes short... especially the car scene was enjoyable yet i think it is stretched out a bit

In Garden of Words, Takao fell in love with a teacher in his school.
In Your name, Taki fell in love with a girl 3 years older than him.
In Weathering with you, Hodaka fell in love with a girl he thought was 2 years older than him.

I waited a week to watch this bcuz I wanted to watch the movie first. I finally got to watch it at the cinema's with my friend yesterday and it was amazing! We thought we were late by 20mins but the movie just started (I assumed so and thankfully it was the case). Honestly I was really surprised by the fast pace. I thought it would be something similar to weathering with you or other anime movies where they introduce you to their daily lives first and slowly build up on the disaster but wow it was so fast. One con for me is that by the third worm I felt it got a little repetitive. Other than that I loved it and I'm planning to rewatch it!

I think it's a very different movie from Your Name. I definitely like it better than Weathering With You, but not quite as much as Your Name. That being said, the fact that it's based on a real tsunami really brought the emotions, especially with little Suzume at the end.

For me its 1) Weathering 2) Suzume 3) Your Name
Weathering is gritty and tragic, kinda Shakespearian. The characters have real motivation and experience growth.
Suzume is a very well rounded movie and has universal appeal. Not a romance movie. I indentify with the aunt alot , especially the outburst that was and wasn't her (missing out on life to care for family).
Your Name was beautiful, like the other 2 films, but the Romance was overbearing.

I never liked Your Name that much...I prefer Suzume way more exactly because there wasn't much romance. I think people who go into it expecting romance will say that it was "underwhelming" but I don't think it tried to be romance in the first place. Sure, Suzume had a crush on the dude (so did I✌️) but it felt super onesided...and good! he is an university student who trains to be a teacher, it would be fckd up if he was hitting on high school girls.
It was very clear to me what exactly the movie was about (btw. I'm sure Suzume's house got destroyed by the tsunami) but I kept wondering if everyone in the cinema outside of Japan gets IT.
Oh, and I've also realised, that I have ptsd from those earthquake alarms after living in Japan 😅

I read that the reason souta was the chair for so long was because the director wanted to make the story about two girls rather than a boy and a girl. the producer told the director that the audience wouldn't want it and weren't ready, so the director was forced to make another boy and girl story, thus souta = chair

A Silent Voice is still my favorite anime movie.
All great movies. Though Weathering with You was forgettable so not sure on that one. 🤔
Anyone want a good anime movie with 0 romance, check out Sword of the Stranger. Subtitled, dubbed destroys the child character, completely altered his character.
I'm sorta a dork and literally watch every anime subtitled first then watch their dubs when released so I can compare and see how well the dub relays the characters. Very few accomplish that. That's why i tend to recommend subtitles.

The scale of Suzume def feels much bigger than Your Name with all of the crazy door closing sequences, and the relationship between Souta and Suzume is fleshed out really well for the first 2/3 of the movie. Souta being a chair is also such a charming component to this movie, creating so many memorable moments both comedic and symbolic. But once Souta becomes the keystone the movie makes a terrible shift in pacing in my opinion. Suzume's aunt just randomly appears at this point and that entire road trip segment just felt like an awkward way to progress the story to the ultimate end sequence it was heading to. Your Name simple does not stumble like this and is quite literally perfect from start to finish.
