"The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73-mile (1.17 km) long spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad line through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California.
"One of the engineering feats of its day, the Loop was built by Southern Pacific Railroad to ease the grade over Tehachapi Pass. Construction began in 1874, and the line opened in 1876. Contributors to the project's construction include Arthur De Wint Foote and the project's chief engineer, William Hood.
"Rising at a steady 2% grade, the track gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation in the Loop. A train more than 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long passes over itself going around the loop.”
-Wikipedia
I've heard the Tehachapi Loop described in many different ways but his is the best at truly visualizing this area. A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for posting this.
Reading about this Great Tehachapi Loop in my Time-Life, The Old West book; The Railroads. Just got through rereading The Indians, The Cowboys and The Soldiers. Gifts from my gra'mom. This loop was built in the early 1980s. I worked on the Sante Fe Railroad maintaining track from San Bernardino to the Mojave Desert working beside Navajo Indians until I was injured. The Navajos reminded me of the Filipinos I worked with in the Navy in the 70s. Small of stature but large in heart. Was a long-haired hippie. Hitchhiked back East and joined the Navy in Philadelphia. And boot camp in Great Lakes.
One of the most awesome train videos I have ever seen. Amazing video stability with the drone.
I don’t want to make any of you young fellows jealous but I had the privilege of riding the loop as a passenger on the train heading to Bakersfield on the way to our new home near Fresno. Barely remember the trip; it was long ago, 1948.
1956 here at night
Was it on a Union Pacific?
AMTRAK stopped using this loop in 1971 for passenger service.
What is the purpose of that loop?
@@particlesofenergy It makes train passengers dizzy and disoriented so they forget that their next stop is Bakersfield.
That is real cool to see an overhead view like this so much more impressive then a ground view always .
I have had the pleasure of watching freight trains on the loop a couple of times in 2013 from the historical marker on the old highway, totally awesome
Very well done. It is great to see the full loop and to see it working with a train on it. Keep up the good work. Nice to see a good video.
Amazing footage of The Loop. Remarkable drone and camera. Thanks for the video.
A superb, clear and well placed perspective on the Tehacapi pass.
This is one of my favorite places on earth. A truly great video. Thanks for posting.
I can´t believe how long this trains is. Really a great shot!
That guy does great modelling work, it looks so real. Thank you for posting.
Not modeling work.
😂 #youfunnyafbrebre
Pretty cool. I saw this in real life as a child of about 8 or so... almost 30 years ago lol. How time flies.
The physics of stuff like this fascinates me. It sure is an engineering marvel!

Beautiful!! Thanks for uploading it! :)
Impressively steady platform. Well done.
amazing how still it can hover.
Unbelievable video stability! More stable than a tripod on terra firma!
Excelente! Um dia, num futuro bem próximo, irei a este lugar; Tehachapi deve ser um desses cantos do mundo em que a beleza e a energia está presente em tudo!
3 engines & 87 carriages, all double stacked with containers. That's 174 big rigs not on the roads. Impressive.
Yeah, I had a flat tire out there, and no one was around to help.
I counted 90 too (Y)
We should go back to railroading.
You counted 92?
You needed help with a flat tire?
Super job Matt!!
What an awesome shot!
Pretty epic shot man!
Wow! The Train Looks So Good From The Birds Eye View Going Around The Loop Nice Catch.
Damn that drone is like a camera on a mountain. Not even a bump, nothing.
This is awesome!!
Nice job. I'm headed there this weekend to fly my P3 and hopefully get some cool video as you did. Nice job.
How did you go?
Wow cool stuff, never seen this loop before
Superbe vidéo, grande stabilité du drone, impressionnant !
Le site de Tehachapi est vraiment magnifique;
¡ Gradioso !, "la gran serpiente - silenciosa - desde la cabeza a la cola". Muchas gracias.
Nicely positioned.
Beautiful!
Wonderful!! And no pathetic background music either!
I would have appreciated Round and Round by Ratt. But you know, licensing
A hate all the shit music the put in some videos a know exactly what you mean lol
The natural sound of the train would be best. But this looks to be a drone video, and most drones don't record audio.
beautiful
Outstanding.

Awesome vid!
excellent and impressive video
bellissimo video.qualita super.
Excellent video
awesome video
What goes around comes around.
Ray Evans groan🤦🏼♀️
Enjoyed your video. I recently made a video of the loop. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant footage. Kudos to the DJI drone.
(A pity that there was no microphone in use to pick up the sound from the train.)
mesmerizing
Spectacular!
I have, what I suspect, is a very dumb question: why the loop? Couldn't the railroad simply be traced left without involving a loop?
With this being said, whatever the reason, I am glad the loop exists! It's absolutely stunning.
Standard trains don't deal well with steep slope, it quickly limits the capacity of the locomotive. By extending the distance with the loop, the track rises 77 feet at just over a 2% slope. Still steeper than average mainline track but obviously manageable.
I remember seeing the loop in 1956 or 57 I was about 8 Y.O.
Waw ! very impresive !
video is so still it seems like the camera was fixed on a solid mounted pole or attached to a building.
that"s a really long trem great vedeo mate
should do a second video with a second train crossing the first.
Well done,Love it,.
snidely whiplash would love this track
awesome!!!
interisteng and spookey perspective of the t/l
great way to fall asleep! But otherwise a great view plus historical insight; amazing engineering feat considering it was done in the 1800's - thx for posting this....now, if we could just get an FPV zipping in/out of the tunnels - that would really be nice!
Awesome
I wonder how often the inner rail wears out!
Excellent video -- the Inspire is rock steady for the duration, very impressive. Did you leave it in P-GPS the whole time? Is the the X3 camera?
+Raptorman0909 Yes. Yes.
87 wagons, c'est incroyable
Glad the police state hasn't gotten to the train watchers too much here (drones & noticeable camera gear), but I have noticed generous distance being kept (requiring zoom cameras) from the tracks, but that could be a private property / no trespassing thing from the rail company.
great video
TEHACHAPI LOOP IS TRULY ONE OF THE SEVEN 7 WONDERS OF THE RAILROAD WORLD THERE ARE OTHERS THAT ARE WONDERS THE KIDDY " Y " AND THE WILLIAMS LOOP,JUST TO MENTION JUST A FEW.JUST TO NAME JUST A FEW.IT WA
Can't wait to get a 4K TV (some day) to see the real beauty from your video. Excellent video-graphing. What is the total weight of your camera?
oh my goodness what was that? i am overwhelmed
In answer to Soo Line, it looks like he used a extension selfie stick, Lol. He has a very steady hand.
Great Video, thanks for sharing new sub
Fantastic!
wondering about inward pulling force on carragies inside loop...
Why the build up where at the top of the picture on the track where it goes over the tunnel? why couldn't they just build it flat? around 91+ cars a little over a mile long train. outstanding video. love the picture from the sky. Thank you
+John Moore Southern Pacific built the loop in 1874 to connect two valleys. The grade was too steep to build a track straight. Trains would not be able to make the climb. The loop was built to ease the grade keeping it to 2%. A train gains 77 feet of elevation in the loop making it very efficient.
+ZACK NEAVE Thanks for the info. I keep going I'm going to learn a lot about railroads and trains from watching the videos and asking questions
Nice!
Nice! I had the privilege of seeing 4449 pulling the New Orleans Worlds Fair Daylight through the Loop back in 1984. I was happy to have my Dad's Canon 35mm SLR to shoot photos of it, and at that time, never imagined technology like this for rail photography.
What altitude were you flying the Inspire? I currently have a Phantom 3 Standard and the new Spark. I'm hoping to get some footage of a train crossing the old bridge aver Cienega Creek, east of Tucson, soon.
Amazing loop. Will you take me to this place to take this video ?
+Ramanathan Subramanian (rsubram24) Its Near the Town of Tahachapi, California. USA
+DaaYay Thanks. So I can park my car at the foot hill and how much distance do I have to walk or climb the hill to reach the view point ? What are the train timings ?
+Ramanathan Subramanian (rsubram24) its a beautiful hike
treestump flyer Its really beautiul. If I come from LA, how to approach this place ? How many trains passing this loop a day ? Where can I park my car ?
Ramanathan
Did you ever get better directions than this? I live about 3 hours away and have been there several times. I'd be happy to give you some suggestions.
I've never seen such a loooooong train. We don't have them in my country. Wow! Like a snake.
heh, really)
Is there a practical purpose for this loop? Safety? Land Use?
grandioses video.......prima...
that is one fine shot!
Yes, Like it
Are the public allowed to watch this from the hill in the center of the loop?
Can I take this video for a Exhibition?
New Slither.io 4K game is awesome
that's the only way an engineer can see the back of his train
저나라 개척시대 같았으면 레알 무법자 나리님들의 아주 끝내주는 사냥감이 되었을 듯
Queen Elizabeth why did you get kicked out of the karoke chat?
Take me to this place where you did this classic video. Please tell me the directions to reach this place. Lovely video.
+Ramanathan Subramanian (rsubram24) Tehachapi Loop is not actually in Tehachapi, California. It is actually north west in a town or area called Walong California. Not much for people or houses there but seems to have it's own postal code.
Just an incredible shot. Any chance of taking the same footage of the Williams Loop? Thanks for posting.
Might be happening as soon as the end of the month.
Bills Loop: ua-cam.com/video/GsyvEZKXrhk/v-deo.html
why didn't it just go in a straight line?
Cause it has to follow the rails.
I wondered the same thing!! Maybe because of elevation,,,
its because of going over a mountain ,most main tracks try to keep grade below 2%.
I wish there was sound. 3 SD70M's? OMG.
this can become a nice time lapse........
It's been done:

okido thanks......
I have one question: why is that train so long?
Terrific video, but the first thing this made me think of is....ZUMA!
SUPER LONG!!!!!!!
엄청난 길이네요!!!!
Nice place. :-) Look on village Telgárt in Slovakia, there is half of circle in tunnel. PS: Haven't you roots in Czech Republic? Your surname looks like americanized czech Škuta. :-)
What is the point for this?
कहां का है यह वीडियो?
Porque hacer ese círculo ⭕️
It's like a snake 🐍 choo choo 🚂💨💨
DJI ?
Impressive - engineering feat and video shot.
What is the purpose of this loop?
The purpose of the loop is to give model railroad builders something really cool to put on their layouts.
hntrains way to steep to do a straight run of rail so the loop take the slope down enough for the trains to make it.
what is the elevation change?
Bakersfield (to the west) is at 404 ft. Tehachapi (to the east) is at 3,970 ft.
