In the older versions, it didn't have that feature, it only showed you the switches to press/shoot and had to use your guns to do so. In 4.5, they also added extra stuff the PDU can do when upgraded; when you have the supply planes bought, you can then drop extra supplies or an airstrike, but they are very costly.
i have to say the way they did the hacking tool is very clever.
